My boyfriend and I were seated on a table that felt a little like it was in a corridor, with wait staff and customers squeezing past us on a regular basis. The food menu is big and focuses on fresh, local produce. They also have a number of daily changing specials on top of the standard menu. I went for the beef wellington, and the boyf went for the whole gurnard, one of the specials. The gurnard was apparently delicious - the boyf leaving nothing but the bones (he even ate the eyes!!). The wellington was pretty good, and certainly large. A big chunk of fillet steak, pate and mushroom encased in light flaky pastry. Admittedly, it was easier to eat when the wait staff remembered to bring me a steak knife, unfortunately, I was three quarters of the way through by this point! Both dishes came with separate veg, a great selection but looking a little microwaved. We could only manage to share a pud - we went for the creme brûlée which was good but not exceptional. The wait staff were mainly youngsters but they were friendly and efficient. The pub also has a nice garden, can imagine it would make a great place for a pub lunch when the summer eventually arrives.

In the end the food was actually half decent (we had pheasant, steak and ale pie and venison between the three of us) and it was a really lovely lunch. The decor is typical of a traditional pub, the clientele mostly locals, some families, lively but not overwhelming. The service was spotty in parts - oddly worse when the place emptied out - but pleasant and responsive when asked. I loved the teapots, cups and tiny milk jugs served on little trays with a smidgen of cake to make you smile. And the sticky toffee pudding was damn good too. If I am ever passing through the New Forest again I would most certainly stop here, even if it was wasn't pouring outside!

Having tasted moules several ways whilst in Brittany a couple of weeks ago we enquired how were the moules cooked as we preferred with out cream? The lady behing the bar went to the kitchen to enquire as we had requested the tradition marinere with white wine leeks garlic etc. We were told only with cream. This surely indicated they were not fresh mussels but probably out of a freezer bag! The mussels in cream arrived with some cold french bread and chips-not very enterprising considering this was a restaurant specialising in fish! The two desserts were very adequate. They sat us down and took our drinks order and talked through some of the things on the menu. It wasn't a set menu, which I liked, as most places on Mothers Day force you to have three courses. On a Sunday they have a carvery option and this is what I went for.... WOW!!! Everything was fresh and tasted delicious. Couldn't fault it at all. The carvery is only £10 per person and you can eat as much as you like (except the meats but they do give you ample).
