So you can imagine my excitement at finding this OPTIKO store. (Just saying it out loud is fun.) I admit I betrayed my loyal Ray-bans many a time just for a fondle of their hand crafted frames. What I love about the store is the range of products on display from Cartier and Missoni to Dita. You can easily tell the amazing craftsmanship that has gone into making these unique designs. The store itself is also beautiful, the layout is simple and it really lets the products speak for themselves. If you are fortunate enough to be a fellow four eyes, I would get myself down to Tattersalls arcade pronto!

David has previously faxed a script over within 5 minutes to a chemist for me so that I am able to receive the necessary eye drops. He understands my issue and is always takes his time to help me. I would recommend this place to anybody who is having issues with their eyes. Contact lenses wearers all know that the price between contact lenses vary ridiculously. I'm not talking the couple of dollars difference between Coles and Woollies here. I mean sometimes I can find the exact same pair of contact lenses for the same prescription being sold at 50% less. The cheapest place I've ever found the prescription is at the Optical Superstore in Capalaba. Note: I can't even get the same price at other Optical Superstores. It's only at the Capalaba shop that my specific brand is so cheap. Of course, it will never be as cheap as buying online but I've turned away from online shopping since I made the foolish mistake of entering in the wrong prescription strength at an online optometrist and getting the wrong pair of contact lenses which they refused to refund. I've never actually had an eye examination here so I can't comment on the quality of their optometrists but if you are just after a pair of glasses or contact lenses, don't be blinded by any other optometrists.

I've been with OPSM for a long time, although this isn't my usual store, although some of the optometrists working here are ones I've seen before. I was greeted by one of the staff who offered to help me choose some frames, and I ended up booking in for a check up (I was due), and they had an appointment in ten minutes time, perfect! The check is free, but they DO charge $60 for the photograph of your eyes. It's completely optional, but if you have certain medical conditions it's good to get that stuff checked out. The optometrist was lovely and thorough, and I also got a free trial of some contact lenses, a new type that are far more comfortable to those I'd previously had. In the end I came away ordering some new glasses, as well as covering them for damage and loss, well worth it in case I break these ones too! Look, I know there's places offering full sets of prescription glasses for next to nothing, and if I wore them only sometimes I'd probably do that, but for all day every day, I want nice, comfortable, hard wearing frames that I like the look of, and OPSM have a great range, and throw in your UV protection, scratch protection, thinner lenses, and all of a sudden that $100 pair isn't really any less than what OPSM are charging. Certainly can't complain about this store, it's a good one!

Aesop use the finest plant based ingredients and anti-oxidants to create quality products for your skin. Their flagship store on Adelaide street is bare bones and beautiful, the famous brown bottles stand crowded on a long wooden bench and the effect is quite striking. The staff are friendly and really know what they are doing, they are thankfully not stingy with free samples and I get to go home and test out some of their range. I am particularly taken with Tea Tree leaf exfoliant The products smell wonderful and go on like a treat. While it is a bit too pricy for me ($40 for a 40g jar) I plan to save up some pennies and invest in a bottle.

Of course, 13-year old me wasn't well versed in thinking that would be regular visits to the optometrist and that frames were fashion needed to be regularly updated. Thankfully, although as I write this being completely overdue for a check up, Joe and the team at Optical FX are well versed in eye-check ups and have a range of niche brands for frames. My latest pair, Carter Bonds, have lasted a good 3 years and I'm yet to see them on anyone else around town. My first visit to Joe was as educational as it was routine. He was able to explain a few things about the construct of my eye and why I need to wear glasses that I'd not previously known. Similarly, he was able to correct some formerly incorrect lens strengths I was wearing. A visit to the optometrist is far from sexy, but it is necessary for those of us who need a little help from our spectacle friends. On that note, I'm off to make an appointment!
