This is a monument dedicated to Civil War Union soldiers. It was dedicated in 1884 and consists of…read morea large 73-foot high granite column and a 9 and a half foot bronze statue of a solider holding a rifle on top. The original statue was made of Italian marble, but had to be replaced due to deterioration. The sculpture was made in the likeness of Private George Washington Fair, a carpenter and bricklayer born in Dayton who served in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865. It's height is impressive and it is in relatively good shape, especially considering its age and that it was moved twice, once to and new location in 1948 to alleviate traffic and then back to its original location in 1991. There was a copper box containing documents of the time placed "within the granite bosom" of the monument during it 1884 dedication. They were removed in 1948 when the statue was moved. The documents included "copies of all daily and weekly newspapers of the day, the annual reports of the Board of Health and Police Department, a copy of the city directory for 1883 and a large color picture of the unveiling of the monument." I know, exciting stuff. The monument is located in the middle of the street, and has a little plaza with some seating connected to it. If you walk over there then just be careful. You have to cross a busy street. There is metered street parking available within a reasonable walking distance and there is a commercial parking garage located across the street. Definitely worth a look if you are in Dayton. I would probably couple it with a visit to the nearby Riverside Park to maximize your trip and make the most of your visit. FYI: A crowd of 100,000 people witnessed the dedication in 1883. Dayton's population was reported to be 40,000 at that time.

The logs from those huge old trees still hold up this 2-story building. Once you step inside you'll feel as if you've gone back in time. It's definitely worth your while to stop in a few times every summer to see the new exhibits and attend seasonal events. Admission is only $2, however, the museum accepts larger donations also!

It was originally in a different location, but when traffic increased when Honda moved in, it was decided the bridge needed to be moved to preserve it. A modern covered bridge now stands in its former location, while the Pottersburg bridge received a lovely retirement/second life in a park area as part of a rails-to-trails bike/walking path. This one has a convenient small parking area so you can pull off and check it out and do a little bit of strolling in the area too.

Well organized, attentive, informed staff, great selections, and quick, easy access to just about any materials available near or far. Great programs for seniors, children, and anyone in-between. Added bonus? It's just across the tracks (!!) from the Farmer's Market, so come early on a Saturday mornings during the summer/early fall, take in the best of Springfield's local flavors (including an amazing coffee from Un Mundo Cafe at the Heritage Center!!) then head over to the library and lose yourself in "the stacks!!"

We came here recently for a three year old's birthday party. We weren't quite sure where to enter…read moreat first because this community center is shared with the police station....I thought this was kinda bizarre because it's something I've never encountered before. lol. But somehow after a little wandering, we found our group on the second floor in a decent sized room. There was space for three extra long tables for seating, one long table of food, a craft table, dessert table, a pin-the-nose-on-the-donkey style game and gift table. Our host welcomed us to stay during her two hour time slot. An everyone helped to stay and clean up, so we were all cleared out by 30 minutes after the party was over. I will note that this room not only had a large storage closet, but also a full kitchen that was off to the side and could be closed off. Through our entire visit, I don't think I saw anyone from the venue at all. Infact, this place was a no-man's land aside from us. I did appreciate that there was a small lounge area out on the second floor that was the perfect place to slip away when it came time to nurse my baby. Again, no one else was around to be bothered by us.

Worth checking out for winter water fall. It's very close to the fire station .. falls under the…read morebridge. There is free parking and follow the sound of the falls. It's a pretty decent falls so has to be really cold for weeks to freeze. To get the good view ... well you have to walk out on a ledge. That day it was still icy and slippery. I was alone and more than a little afraid of falling. But really afraid of falling off the ledge into the water or frozen water ... possibly to my death. The ledge to get the view i wanted is slanted down so being icy it was scary. after this stop i went to Charleston falls.

I heard about these falls on the news the previous weekend this May. While cliff diving looks appealing, the alluring, serene flow of the water hides a strong undertow, trapping the would-be swimmer / diver from surfacing. The warning signs pointing this is out are routinely stolen. As a result, local park servicemen have posted new signage deterring folks from jumping into the falls. The best way to enjoy these falls are from the banks or walking down the hidden stair case so you can be level with them. We opened some IPAs from the local Troy brewery, Moellers and watched the waters pass by. Nicole is local to this area and had never been here before. When asked, her parents recalled the Christmas light festivities that hung across the falls many years ago which was fun to go to. However, this annual activity is no longer. Definitely worth a stop if you like water falls.

Plus it smells much better than Other libraries I've used It's selection is fantastic, The librarians are sweet But even more impressive The computer screens are all clean There is a huge selection, Of books for kids and tots Plus programming and Lego nights And arts and crafts and other stuff but none of it rhymes with "tots," so I'll just say: Excellent library, helpful staff, great selection, fantastic for kids and teens, lots of use after school and good during the day to get work done - plus lovely little touches like a community puzzle and a constantly filled schedule of events. Note the hour difference between winter and summer.

Quiet and the staff are friendly. Outside has beautiful gardens and trees. Great library all around.read more
