I paid my GeoVera earthquake policy in full on October 2, 2023 -- $925 for the year, confirmed by GeoVera's own billing portal showing a zero balance and "Full Pay" plan. Within weeks, GeoVera informed me they were unilaterally raising my rate effective my November 2023 renewal, despite having just accepted my payment in full. Then in May 2024, mid-policy, they sent a cancellation notice claiming non-payment of $704 -- a premium increase I had not agreed to and was not properly notified of. They canceled my policy effective May 28, 2024, leaving me uninsured for the remaining six months of a policy year I had already paid for. They then kept my money. No pro-rata refund was ever issued for the unearned premium covering the period after cancellation. This appears to violate Washington State law on multiple counts: First, WAC 284-30-590(2) states that any mid-term change of rates requires at least 45 days advance written notice to the insured, and WAC 284-30-590(3) explicitly states it is an unfair practice to make such changes anything other than prospectively. GeoVera raised my rate shortly after accepting my full payment with no adequate notice. Second, WAC 284-30-590(4) states that if an insured elects not to continue coverage beyond the effective date of a rate change, it is an unfair practice to refund any premium on less than a pro-rata basis. GeoVera refunded nothing. Third, RCW 48.18.290(4) requires that any unearned premium be returned to the insured no later than 45 days after the notice of cancellation. That deadline passed without a refund. I have received nothing. If you are a Washington State policyholder dealing with GeoVera, know your rights under RCW 48.18.290 and WAC 284-30-590. read more

Scam company. I canceled my insurance on October of 25, only for them to charge my card in Jan of 26. I have since then been trying to get a refund to no avail. They're using snail mail as an excuse, even though they have the ability to charge my card fraudulently, they can only refund it via mail check? BS. I do not recommend this company. Shady business practices. They binded my policy after I completed my mitigation inspection and 4 point, only to send a cancellation notice a month later claiming that my roof was in need of replacement, despite me not having any issues with my roof. They kept apprx. $900 of my first installment that I paid, calling $750 of it earned non refundable fees. It is shocking to me that the state of Florida allows this to be legal. I have been a homeowner for more than 20 years and never encountered a company with these types of deceptive, unreasonable practices. They will accept your policy only to find a convient way to cancel you after they send their own inspector out, keeping a part of your hard earned money along the way. read more

I do not recommend this company. I had my house insured with them but they waited a few month to conclude that my house did not complied with their requirements, therefore, they have decide to cancel my policy and refund part of the money I have paid, but charged me some fees which are very unfair. I totally understand that if they decide to cancel a policy they are entitle to, but they should refund the money accurately and not take advantage of their decision to keep extra cash for them. The only reason I'm giving his company a star is because I'm forced to. I'm an active duty Naval Officer, In July 2021, after serving three years in Okinawa, Japan, I return to my home in Louisiana. my wife and I was not home a month until hurricane Ida hit our home, and the significant portion of the New Orleans metropolitan area on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. After our home was assessed by our insurance adjuster from Geovera we were informed we did not have sufficient damage. However, after the small business administration assessed the damage, it was determined we had over $55,000 in damage. We had to take a SBA to repair our home. All my wife and I wanted to do was repay the loan from to SBA, the ignorant blood sucking representatives of Geovera only wanted to settle for not even half of the loan from small business administration. This is no way to treat a military man like myself serving on active duty having to deal with this egregious, unethical and uncouth behavior. if a naval officer, a military man, someone defending our country has to deal with this, there is no telling what others have to deal with. I have my earthquake insurance with GeoVera Insurance Company. The process to get a quote/policy was fast and easy. Their rates are very competitive and their coverages were far more comprehensive than any other quotes I received. I can't speak to their claims practice as of yet because we haven't experienced an EQ loss (and hopefully never will). That said, I'll update my review if/when we encounter an EQ loss. After getting hit with a major hurricane they offer $35,000 for the house damages and $7,000 for personal effects . They offered this as if they were doing me this huge favor . The damages ended up being around 70 grand . When they send an independent adjuster be warned that is more than likely an independent adjuster that actually does 90 Plus percent of their adjusting for them . Now they are wanting to inspect my home years after the hurricane and try to create issues because I have ornamental plants that touch the house . Keep in mind I live in a brick house . They have constantly every year since the hurricane gone up drastically on their insurance premium to try to recoup the money they had to pay out because of hurricane damages . Do yourself a favor and get you a public adjuster anytime you have to have a claim because rest assured they will try to do their best to drastically underpay you . Unfortunately I live in an area to where insurance coverage is high for everyone due to the hurricane . As soon as I am able to find a better insurance company I am definitely switching . Bought a home that needs a new roof, so while in the processes of finding a contractor (having not owned our house less then a month) GeoVera Insurance gave us a month to get the replacement done. Asked for an extension on our policy because we were finally able to hire a contractor to get the roof done, but with supply and demand they wouldn't be able to start until the end of the month. I'm a brand new (less than a month) customer and I can already say the customer service is the worst I've ever experienced. No one responds to emails at all despite them being sent the info@.... email address. It has been 3+ weeks and still no response at all. They will take autodraft payments at unexpected times without warning. I specifically told them I have to pay on the first of the month, but June 27, they took $513 out of my bank by billing my debit card. I called them and was told "nothing we can do about that, they will always take payments early" and " we can't change that". My policy was written on June 2. I gave them $1625 down payment that day. Meanwhile, just 3 days ago, their customer portal online said next payment due was 8/1 for $0.00. I am EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED. My policy for this year is paid off. They not only raised my rate for next year, they are already trying to debit the down payment for my next term out of my bank account. My insurance agent called and left a message at 9am yesterday and today telling me to make a payment for a policy that doesn't even start until the end of next month. Imagine a company that harasses their customers for payments 6 weeks before they are due! They won't even let me change my automatic payment method unless I make a payment for a policy that doesn't even start until August 31st. After hurricane Ida , I made a claim my first desk adjuster assigned no longer works for Geovera , it was assigned to a new desk adjuster McWell Hogue I was told to get estimates and I submitted 6 weeks ago, I have called left messages daily to no avail. Cannot get anyone to answer the phone or return calls. 3 months since hurricane Ida and my house is still not livable because they won't process my claim and I cannot get things started. Zero response from management. They left me no choice but to hire an attorney. I would not insure anything with them,they're customer service is not existent and have done nothing but take my premiums year after year and when you make a claim will deny or just flat out not respond to anything. If I could leave 0 or even negative stars I would. The homeowner of the house was my grandmother who passed away suddenly in early 2020 and we moved in to assume the mortgage and such. Now, I will say that the roof on our house is pretty old.. but it has been perfectly fine, without any issues and there has been no negative marks on the inspections in the past (Trust me, I've been digging through paperwork). Last July our policy was renewed as usual, and then Alabama got hit with back to back hurricanes in September and October. Ironically, 13 days after the second hurricane we got a notice that they will not be renewing our policy unless we replace the roof. It was frustrating to begin with, as we've taken quite a few hits this year as it is. Financially, a new roof is just really not an option. The deductible alone is only about $2k less than the cost of replacement. (Not to mention- the supply/workers shortage and construction services being in such high demand as it is!) Not their problem though. Like I said, all of this was just very frustrating. BUT THIS PART TAKES THE CAKE!!!! I got online and looked over the inspectors report that they are cancelling us over. They reported small spot repairs and missing shingles. Rated at a 2 (Which I learned that is while yes, repairs or replacement is needed, it is not considered serious or urgent) and that minor repairs are needed. This insurance company took a minor, fixable problem (again, 13 days after 2 hurricanes in the middle of a pandemic) and decided to say hey, screw you, replace the whole thing. I admit that I am not the most versed person on home insurance companies/policies... but I refuse to believe that they are all as shady, heartless and money hungry as this one. read more

I had damage to my property due to Hurricane Ida. I had mold to my bedroom and laundry room ceiling. I was told by property claims rep I should have cut out the mold and go sleep in another room. Now why would I cut out the mold before a claims adjuster comes out to my property because of this I was refused loss of use. I contacted them. We studied together several different earthquake insurance options from GeoVera and their company affiliate Coastal Select. Those different options had some interesting intricacies. By email, I asked a few follow up questions to better understand those technicalities. As of now, a full 6 business days later, they never answered those questions. This is despite me contacting by email several times the rep I dealt with and the general customer service she recommended I contacted. If they are unwilling to provide you info when they are in a marketing mode, what kind of claim service can you expect when subject to a 7.0+ earthquake? Also, GeoVera leans on a housing cost replacement model that generates excessively high values. They came up with a replacement cost that was about 15% higher than my homeowner insurer (Hartford). I doubled check my replacement costs using Building-Cost.net. I ran a couple of scenario estimates. And, my insurance estimate was equal to the nearly exact average of those two estimates. This confirms that Geovera's replacement costs estimates are way too high by about 15%. This in turn, artificially boost the deductible by that much. It also reduces the probability that they will ever pay you out any $. I know they have received criticisms by regulators and customers for this practice. I uncovered another insurer who gave me a better coverage with a lower deductible at a lower premium and provided me more info within less than an hour than Geovera did over a week. The other insurer also implemented an earthquake retrofit discount upfront. Meanwhile Geovera would only do it conditionally after you bought their policy. read more

As I typed this review, I am more than mad! I have been a long time policy holder, at least 30 something years and never filed a claim and I have been making payment thru credit card and never have problem before. This time I am trying to pay my annual full payment and when I dialed the tool free number 1-800-324-6020 (they only have this number available), followed all the procedures, the voice kept saying my policy was invalid. It NEVER had a option to let me talk to a real person and it all ended up disconnected! I called a total of at least 10 times. If I could leave ZERO stars I would. Geovera dragged their feet and sent us a letter stating we needed a new roof, new stucco, and we needed to repaint our house or they would not renew our policy. What? Repaint or you cancel? That's completely ridiculous. Anyway, they gave us less than 2 months to do all of this. We live in Florida. I called a roofer immediately and they said they couldn't do the roof that quickly as it takes longer just to get materials. Our agent pleaded with Geovera but they were heartless and denied an extension. Geovera lied and claimed they told us last July that we needed a roof. Where is the proof? They have none. Their underwriting department is full of spineless, greedy weasels. When you call them there is a recording stating due to Covid there may be delays and they ask for your patience. So when I can't get a roof, new stucco, and the house painted in less than 2 months due to Covid delays they show no compassion and no patience. Double standard much?! Geovera is horrible! Geovera overcharges with an excessive overvalue assessment. I live in Los Angeles, and Geovera estimate to replace my 3500 sq ft home in Palisades is 1.5 million. What the heck ? I can buy a brand new 3500 sq ft home in another state for 300000 dollars. I called another nationwide insurance and I get more than adequate coverage for less than half their premium. Never thaught i would ever write a review as such for a insurance co, but our experince was blown away by Tony Lipari, when a called to set up our claim for hail the young man was kinda rude, needs better training in responding to clents, but when Tony called it was very professional and easy, he came out and was very honest and helpful our claim was meet and the process was so quick.
