Having enjoyed Gertie in the past, I was glad to check out Gertrude's. It's conveniently located not too far from the Brooklyn Museum, which was our next stop. There were some people waiting when we arrived (Saturday), so making a reservation was the right move. They have indoor and outdoor enclosed patio seating. Service was friendly. My friend and I enjoyed our cocktails and mains. Although delicious, I do think the salad with the added Smoked Trout for $27 was a bit overpriced. Our Latkes appetizer never arrived, but it ended up being ok because we were pretty satisfied after our meal. Overall, a solid spot near the museum and botanical garden. read more

Finally came for burgers with buddies and I'm glad I did! I really wanted last week's collaboration with Hani's but it was Purim. Soy friend and I came today. The food was definitely unique. The burger was strongly spiced, the latkes (a little underdone) spicy, and the ice cream nutty. Was it my favorite meal? No but it was good for sure and I do want many more meals at Gertrude's. I've been wanting to try this spot for ages, and finally decided to get delivery when I was craving a burger. Gertrude's burger was delicious, I think I'd even get it with just the latkes next time because the pairing was incredible! The meat was perfectly medium rare, well-seasoned, and the sauce was tangy (but definitely don't be too-heavy-handed with it). The latkes were fluffy and a little crispy and the roe on top with the sauce was delicious. I thought the salad was a tad over-dressed and got soggy quickly, and the pickles were a nice crunchy fresh addition to the burger but not essential. The cake was soo sweet, very rich icing, really good but as someone without a sweet tooth it was intense. I think the standout for me were the burger and latkes, I'd definitely go there in-person next time because the outdoor seating looked very cute! read more

In the past, my search for Jewish cuisine was limited. There were a few gems: Blue Ribbon in Park Slope whose Matzoh Ball soup was absolutely delicious, Katz Delicatessen's turkey sandwiches and Russ and Daughters lox. Then, I found Gertie's in Williamsburg which was Jew-ish heaven offering my favorite Chopped Cheese and Veggie sandwich, rugelach, chopped liver, generous portions of glorious food. Gertie's led to Gertrude's now celebrating their second anniversary. Well, count me in the celebration. Gertrude's menu is small and to the point; offering Jewish cooking at its best: latkes, crispy roasted chicken in pickle brine (dinner menu) a burger with a special sauce. The chill vibe starts from the outdoor seating to the interior. The small and cozy bar is a great place to dine as well as the booths. My friend Sharon and I chose Sunday brunch because it's a great way to start a Sunday, especially on lazy summer afternoons. We arrived to a packed house and our server, Vi, offered iced water and lemons. We decided to share the Latkes "Bar"appetizer with sides of Creme Fraiche, syrup and roasted apples. Sorry to say this was a huge disappointment: the size of the three latkes were equivalent to silver dollars. The sides were delicious but not enough to make up for the minuscule portion. Sharon's Brunch salad consisted of salmon salad, soft boiled egg, red onions, fried capers and greens in a champagne vinaigrette. She enjoyed it immensely. My Veggie Omelette consisted of caramelized onions, peppers, and Cheddar cheese with delicious breakfast potatoes. I tried the phony Negroni.cocktail and it was surprisingly delicious and did kick me into a Sunday groove. Gertrude's brunch menu offers Reuben Burger, Babka French Toast and Brisket Hash. The service was extremely courteous, accommodating and professional. I did recognize staff from Gertie's who now work here which is great. I will come back for their dinner, the crispy chicken looks delicious. However, I hope the portions are a bit more generous. Really fun atmosphere for dinner. A nicely varied menu, with delicious appetizers including latkes topped with roe, and entrees including delicious roasted half chicken, spaetzl with beet sauce, hamburgers and flat iron steak. And, to top it off a remarkably large slice of delicious chocolate/vanilla Layer cake with whipped cream on the side. Really lovely brunch here today. We started with potato latkes with apple, crème fraîche and syrup, which was the perfect prelude to our meals. Wanting to eat healthy, I indulged in the brunch salad which included lettuce, hard boiled eggs, smatterings of salmon salad all drenched in a really delicious vinegar forward dressing. Fawn had the vegetarian omelette with home fries which looked divine. It made me wish I ordered that too! Service was lovely and attentive without being intrusive and the restaurant felt very homey and comfortable. Updating my precious Gertrude's review as I last came here for brunch. Came for dinner this time and I definitely agree with my previous rating. When you charge for bread it better be good and it definitely was. We also had a couple of drinks which were quite nice and refreshing. The house spritz and a celeri. We had one of the specials of the day, the trout with a refreshing salad and the Gertrude's burger with fries. The trout was really good and the salad was quite excellent. The burger was quite a solid burger and if you're not sure what to get, it's a good choice as it's quite good. Better than a lot of places but this isn't a burger joint so can't expect it to get there. Very good juicy solid medium burger. Gertrude's is a good neighborhood staple. There always appears to be a wait but am usually able to get bar seating or a table for two as a walk in for dinner or brunch. The drinks are good. Their Borscht Bloody uses beets and had a nice spice if you want to try something different. You also can't go wrong with a Dirty Gertie. The Big Nosh is my favorite for brunch. I love a good whitefish and the latkes are good. I'm actually anti onions but am down to pick out each and every tiny chopped red onions of the whitefish just to enjoy it. I'd recommend getting the pickle plate with it for an even more perfect bite(s). For dinner don't pass on the latkes appetizer. They're topped with a very generous portion of roe. Such a good ratio of latkes, Crème fraiche and roe. My husband will usually do the burger and I try the spatzeal. I think the spatzeal is a special because it's always prepared in a unique way so ask about it! read more

Walked through Prospect Heights to have a late dinner with family at Gertrude's. Lucky to get a table for three on a Thursday night without a reservation. Cute intimate restaurant. We had two small tables pushed together for our party of three which was perfect. My daughter and I shared the daily spaetzle special and the smoked fish nicoise. The smoked trout was served on a bed of romaine with wax beans, potatoes, a soft boiled egg, black olives and confit tomatoes. So good. The spaetzle was warm and tasty. Perfect share for a late dinner. My husband devoured his burger. Substituted the fries for three latkes which were crispy on the outside and warm on the middle. Almost like a thick hash brown cake. Definitely worth the $6 upgrade. Service was great. Water glasses were constantly refilled. Our bench seating was cozy without feeling crowded. Second time coming back to Gertrude's after having such a solid first experience. Quality of the food was still OK. However, dropping my review by another star due to a very rude waitress. After finishing apps and waiting 30 minutes we asked about our entree and the waitress said "yeah we spaced it" and then we followed up asking if we could place an order for dessert at that point as we were splitting one entree and then were hit with an irritated response.. "can we also place an order for a seven layer cake?" "we're not going to run out of it". Solid food, but won't be coming back after this experience, too many other great restaurants to go to nearby. This brunch spot is so perfect! The vibes are immaculate and the food is top notch. The prices are decent for the portion size and quality of food you are getting. The staff was super friendly, they were a little busy and missed our coffee orders but they corrected it and took the coffees off our bill (which was so nice they didn't have to do that) The brunch salad was so yummy! It is definitely fishy so if you don't like that smoked fish taste then don't get this. I don't know what's "reasonable"about a plate of 3 latkes for $22. Maybe I was paying for the salmon roe or the overstaff. They were rather salty (not because of the salmon roe) and each the thickness of a short stack of quarters. Had I looked at the menu more closely, maybe I would have not ordered them, but who in their right mind imagines 3 minuscule latkes (which are mostly potato, as you may know) for $22 (plus tip)? The staff was efficient and remote. Maybe this is a good thing; had they been warmer, I would have inquired how three latkes the size of a tiny hockey puck warranted a $22 tab (not including tax and tip.) Did I mention they were a bit raw in the middle? And kinda salty. But not peppery. In the end, those three little latkes were $28.58, or $9.53 per latke. There are photos here kf the latkes - they appear much larger, and 4 to a plate. The posted menu shows them at $21. So they raised the price of the latkes, reduced the number you get, and made them smaller. I guess there's a class in culinary school which explains why you should do this. I wonder if Carmy would ever pull a stunt like this and still be able to don his toque the next day. I used to work in a restaurant, so I know margins are slim. So maybe this is the item that keeps the restaurant afloat. $9.53 latkes. $10 if you round it to the nearest dollar, so a $10 latke. I'd been eyeing Gertrude's since it opened, excited to see how this new "Jew-ish cuisine" bistro would fit into the neighborhood. We stopped by for brunch around 1 pm, and the place was buzzing! Even though a few tables were open, they put us on the waitlist to hold space for upcoming reservations--totally fair. We were quoted 20 minutes and, impressively, waited about that long. Once seated inside (there's also an enclosed, heated patio), we were in good hands. Our server was juggling plenty of tables but stayed friendly, professional, and impressively speedy--no signs of that new-restaurant chaos except a spilled water or empty glasses every once in a while. Now, onto the food. I went for The Big Nosh, and the name did not lie--this was a true feast. A toasted everything bagel (on the smaller, crispier side rather than fluffy--personal preference!), a generous fish spread, two fried eggs, all the fixings (tomato, red onion, capers, cream cheese), plus two crispy latkes. Everything came ready to be reconstructed exactly to my liking, which I appreciated. My friend went for the Reuben Burger and loved it, and the sheer mountain of crispy shoestring fries that came with it? I had no choice but to help her out. Coffees were solid, nothing mind-blowing, but got the job done. Overall, for a spot that's still new and clearly very popular, Gertrude's impressed. We loved our Saturday Brunch at gertrude's..a nice menu of something for everyone.. a nice walk from the BBG where we caught the Cherry's in full bloom on a late April weekend. We had a 2pm reservation, lots of folks waiting so we were happy to sit out side in the overhead heated street shed..esp because the inside seemed a bit "cozy" & it was a warm day. Excellent service, food beautifully displayed with lots of herbs & garnish etc Relish Tray was nice, could have had a bit more on it for the 20/$ price..** note on the Brunch menu it says 17 but comes up 20 on the bill. I came here for brunch on a Saturday with a friend. The space inside is very tight, which normally is whatever but it had been raining all day, so it made things a little uncomfortable. I ordered the Best Bialy, but had them put it on an everything bagel. I also ordered the House Salad. My friend had the burger. The food was fantastic. The bagel is served open faced and it's a huge portion. The vinaigrette on the salad was super tasty; it made the dish taste very bright and fresh. I had some of my friend's fries, which were also good. They are the thin and crispy type, which I love. I also had a glass of the Muscadet, which was good and my friend had a glass of the orange wine. Total bill was well under $100, which I thought was very reasonable for two meals that included wine. Omg Gertrude's--you have a place in my latke loving heart let me tell you! It's a really adorable place with super cute decor and very cozy atmosphere. Absolutely perfect with a cute date night or a fun brunch with the girls! My only recommendation? Get there EARLY or get a reservation because this place fills up very fast and there's not a LOT of seating. That said once you get there, make sure you order the Latkes--they are absolutely delish and I was savoring every bite! I especially liked the fresh flavor of the roe and the break in the strong flavors with the cream. This was a textural delight. I also loved the bacon egg and cheese with the beef salami--the beef salami is an extra (and I now know NECESSARY) charge. All the food was awesome! I did have to split everything with my husband though because the portions are really generous, which is great because things here are not exactly cheap. The service was also wonderful and the staff was very nice, attentive, and generally well balanced in the number of times they came to check in. Overall I really enjoyed brunch here! The food was, well a disappointment to say the least. I had a very hard time eating the stuffed cabbage as the wrapping was tough and undercooked. The filling or stuffing was also undercooked and tasteless which really didn't matter much because there was hardly any of it. This place, supposedly with a flair for Jewish cuisine I'm sure has good intentions and while the latkes were overcooked , they were also way oversalted. I hadn't been in New York in 10 plus years but this neighborhood restaurant on election night made me feel like a real New Yorker. This is clearly a local favorite from the conversations we had with our neighboring tables but this was all destination dining for me and my best friend, Linette. Linette and I celebrated 35 plus years of friendship and are both originally from D.C. I live in New Zealand now and booked a hotel in Brooklyn specifically near Gertrude's as I follow the chef Eli Sussman @gertrudesnyc - Partner/Exec Chef @talkininthewalkin on social media and was keen to try Gertrude's with high expectations. This election night was magical with the city feeling upbeat and positively giddy. I had told Gertrude's it was our Frienniversery of 35 years and Allie the bartender greeted us with vodka beet juice shots that got the party started! Great introduction to Gertrude's! Scott was our server with Lisa the floor manager stepping in at times to serve or check on us. Jacob and Reni were other servers that night on the floor. The service was impeccable. Professional, of the highest standards, while warm and intimate. It's an absolute pleasure when the service matches the excellence of the meal. Gertrude's was outstanding Jewish Soul food, elevated comfort food to gladden the heart. We started with Challah Park rolls,Latkes with Crème Fraîche & Trout Roe and Beef Tongue Tartine. We were treated to Whitefiish & chips and housemade Spaetzle, complimented from Gertrude's. Everything was presented well: correct temperature, lovely plating. and delicious flavors. Ingredients balanced and complemented each other. Linette & I both had the 10oz Bavette Steak with sherry bordelaise, pickled shallot medium rare ( the best way!). The meat was beautifully marbled and perfect cooked. There was a choice of fries or salad greens. We chose fries. Wonderful curated wine list, great recommendations by Lisa! To finish, we had the Black & White 'Seven Layer Cake'. My mom use to make us a chocolate layered cake with Sarah Lee pound cake (when guests over!) and it reminded me of being around the kitchen table with family and friends. Gertrude's is the defiantly quirky Jewish ethos that's so central to NYC - the zany Upper West Side bubbe this goyishe boy never had - made into a restaurant. A brunch double date after a Botanic Garden romp brought us here. The winsome, personable service compensated for a long wait and seating in their dark outdoor street shed. Any Jewish restaurant had better nail its latkes, and Gertrude's absolutely did, substituting classy roasted apples for the traditional, more pedestrian apple sauce. The "simple child", a sort of beets-and-avocados number on a bialy, was appropriately off-beat and brunchy all at once. The Borscht Bloody Mary cocktail was earthy and sour, kind of strange, but isn't that what a Bloody Mary should be? Maybe it's more weird than good, but definitely fun. Come to think of it, the meal's predominant taste was sour: sour bialy toppings complemented by sour pickles and sour cream and a sour cocktail. Nothing wrong with that, but there are more flavors to explore in the Yiddish vocabulary. Couldn't we add the sweet option? Minus one star for the indulgent "gentle parenting" of the Park Slope clientele you'll have to put up with, along with the small menu. But even so, Gertrude's is a great comfy time. We were polite, but she was curt & rude & aggressive throughout. So bizarre. Also, we paid $80 for a bagel tower for 2. The food was decent, but it was mostly pickles / raw veggies ... They give you 2 ish spoons of creamcheese (for 2 bagels!). For that price, I was expecting a feeling of abundance! There wasn't enough fish or cream cheese for the both of us. Came for the latkes and was dazzled by the cake! A cozy and bustling neighborhood restaurant for a Friday night in prospect heights! Staff was super kind. Got the half chicken, latkes, and their duck spatzle and it was perfect for two people to share. Those pickles that come with their chicken are real tart, but in a good way. Loved the latkes, should have ordered more. Instagrammable and perfect amount of crunch. The seven layer chocolate cake floored me, though. I'm not normally a cake person but it was perfectly creamy and the right amount of dense. First bite tasted like a rich butter cookie converted into cake form. That whipped cream really hit as well. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a cozy, lively date spot. Would definitely make a reservation as they were pretty busy. Patio is heated and covered! gertrude's (stylized in all lowercase) was brought to my attention by one of my my brothers; he's a fan of Gertie (similar concept) and thought it would be a good idea for us to check out their newest establishment. I've had a few takeout pastries from Gertie and concur that they served quality stuff, so we made plans to try gertrude's out for dinner the other night. gertrude's sits on a corner in Prospect Heights, not far from downtown and a few blocks from the Barclay's Center. It was crowded when we arrived, but we had a reservation and were seated promptly. The space isn't too large - the interior has a combination of banquette, table, and bar seating with additional tables outdoors. The decor was warm with mostly earth tones and a few accents throughout the space. I was not happy with where they sat us; opposite the banquette seats they had mini tables that jutted out from a half wall that separated the bar area from the main dining area. These were very small tables that were low to the ground and had stools in lieu of chairs. I can imagine it being tight and uncomfortable for a party of two, and thought it was inappropriate for us (a party of three) to be seated here. I was seated in way so that I was in the walking path of many patrons, and it really made for an uncomfortable experience. That combined with the fact that I saw parties of three seated at regular tables really set the wrong tone to start the evening (see pics I uploaded for a glimpse of the "table for three"). These tables should really be reserved for walk-ins, not someone with a reservation. The menu contained mostly New American and Jewish-leaning cuisine. The selection was somewhat small, but they are a new restaurant and likely growing their menu. They have a daily spaetzle special, a few apps, some salads, entrees, sides, and a raw bar. We decided to start with drinks - I had a New Year's Sidecar which was just fine. We also got some bottled water which was lukewarm - bleh. They told us that the daily spaetzle special was short rib - that sounded good so we went with that plus bluefish and a whole artichoke to start. The apps were pretty good - the spaetzle was tasty, and the artichoke was paired with a really tasty lemon aioli. For my main I had Gertrude's Burger which was a beef patty with Swiss, caramelized onion, lettuce, and special sauce on a challan roll. The burger was average - the bread-to-beef ratio was off, and kind of fell apart as I was eating it. I was able to choose between fries and latke as a side - I chose the latter which were fine. That being said, the food really isn't the issue I have with gertrude's - it was tasty albeit slightly pricy for the quality I received. The real problem here is the service; from the start, we weren't too sure who our server was. Eventually, our order was taken, but then the wait was really long. We were told there was a delay in the kitchen, however I saw parties that were seated after us get their food before us. Our appetizers were served one at a time - I'm not sure if that was done on purpose but it made the flow weird. After long waits between each app and then an additional long wait, we got our mains. To put it in perspective, we were seated at our reservation time of 8:15pm and did not get served mains until after 10pm. Shortly before our mains came out they gave us a free app as consolation, however at that point I wanted to leave since I was sitting at a tiny table on an uncomfortable stool for almost 2 hours. Everyone we interacted with was really nice, but really the service was a hot mess. I'm giving them an extra star due to the promising food and friendly staff, but overall this was a disappointing experience. I would not return here if given the opportunity. read more

Let me just say, gertrude's (all lowercase:) has been open for what, a month? And has hands down become one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants, I feel so lucky to live so close! I want to start off by acknowledging the warm, inviting atmosphere and beyond wonderful staff and management. The entire team is so personable, attentive and kind. Rachel, the owner is just lovely and truly cares about each customers experience (you should also check out Gertie, her other restaurant). I can always count on having reliable, fast service despite how busy it may be. If I listed everything I recommend, this would be an essay, but drink wise, the Side Car and House Spritz are my favorites. The Side Car is truly a classic and pairs perfectly with the warm challah role app. I also highly recommend getting latke's either as an appet or appetizer-they're such a cool substitute for fries (their fries are also good!!) and are perfectly crispy and fried until golden brown. The gertrude's burger is hands down my favorite. The challah bun is soft and burger is so rich and flavorful. Always cooked precisely to what you order (medium, medium rare, etc). The oysters are another favorite, can't go wrong ordering them- also perfect for sharing. The Half Chicken is also seasoned impeccably and remarkably good. Lastly, you can't go to gertrude's without ordering the Black and White Seven Layer Cake. Best cake I have had, I think in my whole life. Better than some of the best BK bakery's. Overall rating: 4.5 As a new restaurant, this spot was hustling. So crowded at like 5:30, which is crazy to me. So it must be good! The first time I went I tried to do a walk-in which was no bueno. Next time, I did a reservation and the hostess was very nice. I was kind of expecting for them to give me some tang to sit at the bar since I was solo, but since a table was reserved it was pretty easy. The server was so nice, but I was a bit taken aback by these prices. Usually, I prepare myself mentally when looking at the menu online. But they don't show prices on their online menu, so when I got there it took me some time to adjust. I got a burger which was okay. Not okay enough for $30. The fries were good. And the drink prices were very reasonable! But I'm not sure if this is something I would come back to on my own. I can see it being a great place if I worked in the area or I was dating someone that lived close by. But idk, there's something off for me. The staff was soo friendly and the restaurant looks great! Best martini spot around! Small little restaurant that excels in what they do! Highly recommend getting a reservation and trying the frites!

The Gertie team knocked it out of the park -- the restaurant fits the vibe of the neighborhood and looks as if it's been here for years. All of the food was awesome, with our personal favorite being the burger and root veggies. Prices are very reasonable as well. We were able to walk in, but if you can get a reservation that seems preferred. read more

We made reservations while staying with friends in the area, based on a recommendation. Even on a week night it was very busy. We were seated outside in a little makeshift covered area. The aesthetic of the shelter wasn't that great, but at least it wasn't inside on a night where their AC had broken. We were with foodie friends so we ordered a lot -- oysters, latkes, veggie schnitzel, spaetzle, blue fish toast, challah bread, and wine. The oysters were fresh and served with a beet vinegar. They didn't have hot sauce though. The latkes were delicious (probably my favorite bite of the night). The tomato toast was good -- the tomato was very fresh -- but cream cheese dominated most of the flavor and I couldn't taste any fish. The summer squash spaetzle was good as well. If I had to do it over again I'd not have ordered the schnitzel. The best part about that entree was the fries. Service was a little slow but everyone was friendly and helpful. they just started brunch service on day 2 when I came and everything was yum! Also got the Babka French toast to share (would recommend if it was cheaper , not super worth the price tbh) Food was seasoned well, the bagel had a good bite, a perfect base to the toppings on top ( I hate bagels and I liked this one). Just the right amount of salt, cucumbers brought brightness and was a great balanced opened face bagel. Worth $16? Heck yaaaaa Fries were !! Good sando, the pastrami was umami and sauce was yummy!
