Things I like: - Many excellent beers to choose from - The bartenders are usually quick to grab your order - Free old-school arcade games are fun - The space is very malleable, if that makes sense (room to stand, tables to sit at, a long table that can act as a bench, a couch in the back). It seems to work with any sized group Things I don't like: - The music is all chosen by patrons at the jukebox. This leads to many times during the night when the music stops. - If you come late there will probably be a lineup. Good lord, I didn't do this one either? Sigh... Get Well is an eclectic bar. It is large, loud and fills up quickly later in the night. There is a door man which feels bizarre for what should be a cool, out of the way, "secret" bar hidden in what used to be a Portuguese sports bar. It's popular neighbours are still name dropped constantly yet somehow haven't reached the same level of popularity. It's weird really. Weird in a, "What are you doing here and how did you find out about this place?" kind of way. It's not a bad thing at all and I kind of like the change but I blame Torontoist. Beers on tap are subject to change the moment a keg runs out so you will almost always be surprised by something new and good. There are standards that appear of course like Beau's (no es bueno) then not so standards like Sawdust City (lo quiero en mi cara) will run right after it. There is also a large fridge at the end of the bar with the usual suspects in bottles and cans. I won't lie, I don't usually stay here very long because it gets really loud later in the evening. I wouldn't mind so much but I've grown out of yelling at the people I sit next to just to hear them. If you like good beer, random conversation you may or may not be forced to be a part of due to the close proximity of the people squished into you and classic arcade games then Get Well is worth a look. If you're a snob that doesn't like being squished into random people and more random conversations then go somewhere else. You're an elitist and this place is a different kind of cool than you're used to. read more

Get Well has taken over the spacious layout that was left by The Port. They're sandwiched between The Red Light and Camp 4 and have a rather large capacity compared to its neighbours and other Dundas West gems. I reckon you could fit a good 200 people in there! This could be problematic when it comes to drunken spillouts at 2am. It was also hectic trying to get a drink at the bar with the place being slammed with only a couple bartenders running around. Looks like they're setting up for a good dozen or so beers on tap, so if you want to avoid chaos this could be a great, relaxing space on a weekday. I only went to the Port once when it was around and there wasn't really much to it. Get Well seemed a little sparse but I could notice a couple of renovations, but it's hard to tell what's change since the takeover. They've only been open a few weeks so it could be a work-in-progress. I've heard they've already had a couple of bands playing in the back area, so this could very well turn into a bit of a concert venue in time. Given the location and capacity this will likely be a very popular space. read more

I came here for the pizza. North of Brooklyn Pizzeria holds a special place in my heart having visited their standalone location tucked away on Palmerston. Order a whole pie with friends and it can be made fresh within 15. Saucy and pipin' hot! I'm a fan of Get Well's concept - reminds me of what you'd see in the movies! If you like "dive bars" and love craft beer - this is a MUST visit. As with all locations in the Ossington/dundas area - if you want to sit you need to arrive early. If you are not interested in beer - dont go here. Not much else (if anything?) If you like beer - WOW - amazing tap selection and they will allow you to sample them all for free before committing to one. Also a huge beer fridge full of other favorites and many "new to me" types - which is rare to find these days. No wait staff - but ladies behind the bar were fantastic, friendly and really knew their beers. The music gets loud later in the night (making it harder to chat) and it does get super full. The thing people say about going early to get a table, I'm not sure what the definition of early is but I got there about 9p and there was plenty of space, no line up and some seats available. But when I left at about 1230a, there was a lineup out the door and no seats available. The coolest thing about this place are the arcade games in the back. They are some really cool retro games that are awesome. They got an extensive beer list with tons of stuff in the fridge. You can see their twitter account with the current day's beer menu, which also appear on their website with nothing else but the beer list and the address. Simple is good. I don't need to know anything else. The waitress is quite attentive as someone else mentioned before, you just gotta make eye contact and they'll help you. The people are also quite cool, you know when you're at a bar and the people sitting at the bar are taking up tons of space and refuse to make space for you to order. This is not that place. The people are like, oh, i'm sorry, you need to get in there to get a drink. The cask beer, the one I had was not good. It did not taste at all like what's described online how it should taste. I think there was something wrong. This should be a case by case basis but if anyone else feels this way, let me know! The washrooms are quite dingy and they got posters of people shooting at me. Haha even the women's washroom which has a clear open door view from walking by. Anyone whose uncomfortable should beware. With all said and done, I'd definitely still come back for a beer. And if you want to eat, I think you need to get it elsewhere as the only thing on the menu I saw was Miss Vickie's chips. read more

Here's the low down on Get Well: Cheap beer, tons of throwback video games and plenty of space to hang out and drink the wide variety of draft carried here. It's a good place to get messy on a Friday. The atmosphere is decidedly casual, so Bay St Bulldogs looking for a game of who's suit cost more will probably want to stick to Earls and the downtown core. I have no idea about the food as I didn't eat there, but everyone seemed to be having a good time and the place is always packed. No surprise either given the neighborhood, but it's a hipster haven. I took my boyfriend to Get Well on Christmas Eve. Get Well is a bar on Dundas with free arcade games in the back. I cannot remember if the bathrooms are accessible nor did I look at the menu. I think the kitchen was closed. The bar was cool, but most of the games were broken. Some of them flat out didn't work, while others had buttons that didn't respond. Neither pinball machine was working. If I were drunk, I may have enjoyed the games more, but I found the brokenness a little frustrating and disappointing. I'm also not a beer drinker, and their bar was missing some fun and flavourful liqueurs like anything mint flavoured, Irish cream and other non-bar rail drinks. I've had the chance to drop by 'Get Well' over the weekend. Since I am in town for just a short period, my friends are getting me re-introduced to the city again. First I must say that this place reminds me of Barcade in Brooklyn, and there is nothing wrong with that. The drinks were solid (as much as they can be since Toronto is still standard poor -- pet peeve), the selection of craft beers was awesome, I got to try a bunch and the best part, there were plenty of fun little oldies to preoccupy myself with. I've read a lot of reviews on this establishment stating that this is a favorite among locals. I encourage both locals and tourists to visit this great space ! There are a good amount of old school arcade video games that are free of charge (Super Mario Brothers, Miss PacMan, etc) with one or two that require change. The decor is cozy for a dive, and the music selection is quirky. I felt like I was in a Michael Cera movie with the atmosphere and music playing (I enjoyed it a lot which is what I'm trying to suggest). The establishment has a pizza joint in the rear of the bar. You order a slice or pie and it's brought out to your table. You will have two separate bills because they are two separate businesses in one building. The pizza is INCREDIBLE! I just returned from Italy after coming here and I was extremely impressed with the authenticity of this pizza. Go even just for the pizza and to play a few games. They've got different casks, and lots of local Ontario brews of all different kinds. Cool vibe, lots of seats (although that couch in the back worries me. Bed bug paranoia?), and video games! I'm visiting Toronto and when I do so, I generally spend at least one evening out with my sister. She knows I like good beer, so tonight, she suggested Get Well. I had a quick glance at the beer menu online and I was happy to visit. Tonight, we arrived at 12:30, but it was Friday night, so it was still busy. There was even a line, albeit a short one. The doorman was in his 40's and probably the only person we saw above 30 the whole night. This place was filled with young hipsters. I scoped out the tap menu and it was filled with craft beer and some stuff I hadn't seen elsewhere. In fact, there's a throwback to my favorite band, The Specials with a root beer called "A message to you rooty". I just had to get that...it was crap, but it wasn't Get Well's fault. So to follow it up, I perused the beer fridge. There's a lot of great beer in there. A lot of it you can't get at the LCBO. I chose a Belgian sour, and it was great. This place has good beer. Unfortunately, that's where we stopped because I don't get to see my sister that often and we wanted to talk. We couldn't. The music is blasted out of speakers that are placed every 2-3 meters. This forces everyone that wants to talk to scream to the people near them. Thus the crowd actually drowned out the music. After 45 minutes of screaming at each other, we decided to leave. The sound in this place has got to have been over 90 db. Absolutely crazy. I haven't tried myself, but my sister says that the pizza on site is divine. She's a foodie too, so I trust her judgement on that one. read more

A fairly new addition to the growing Dundas St. West neighbourhood, Get Well is surprisingly bigger than most offerings on the now over-crowded Ossington strip. Walking in there are a number of things that catch your eye - a nice wide room, old school kitchy tables and chairs, odd dragon sculptures over the bar and various toys, knick-knacks surround you - nothing quite matches but somehow it all fits together. A cute couple of tables set apart up a step or two seems a great place for a private conversation. The bar is situated in the middle of the room with a number of beers - definitely their focus and typical stocked alcohol beyond that. Sadly for me wine choices are limited to two: red or white. But found it was drinkable nonetheless. The hook for me are the FREE old school arcade games at the back - hello Tetris!! Something I hope they retain although to be honest, I'd probably pay to play too. The crowd is decidedly hipster with a mix of young and...more mature revellers. It can get loud but it was a friendly and happy place. And the prices are more than fair - I'd even say possibly even on the cheap side! Having said that this is a great bar to try a few new craft beers, play some free retro video games or try your hand at pinball. The bar staff is efficient and friendly and this is the one place where people don't care how you dress. The music is not overly loud and of no specific genre. It's a great place to hangout with a friend or a group, prices are very reasonable and its got a great selection of beers I have never heard of before. Ok guys, for some reason, I used to always end up going to get well with my boyfriend...and that had to and has stopped. the whole time all he does is play space invaders and ninja turtles and Tetris and all the arcade games from the time we arrive until way past last call, while I am off somewhere making new acquaintances. Oh and don't bother getting tables or going early to grab one; you won't be sitting down. After learning these lessons the hard way, I have been careful about the types of settings and evenings I choose to go here! And it's the bomb! Just go with people or groups that you're going to be okay with NOT socializing with for the majority of the evening because you and everybody will get really drunk and just play wicked arcade games the whole time. So, we wandered by Communist's Daughter which I wanted to check out due to the high ratings on this site. It appears to be the highest rated dive bar on Yelp. I like drinking. And I like drinking on the cheap - why not? After some searching, we finally realized Communist's Daughter doesn't have a sign and it still has the former business sign up. Okay - this is a bad... sign... I can't think of a single 'we don't have signs' place that (a) wasn't hipster central and (b) completely sucked but people liked because they felt like they were in the know. We grudgingly enter and scan the room - the place smelled and nothing on the menu looked interesting, so we did a 180 walked back out. It sucks when you abandon your plans without a Plan B - but sometimes, you stumble upon gems like Get Well, which happened to be just down the block. The place is pretty big and sufficiently busy on a Thursday night. But the two big selling points: lots of good beer on tap and free arcade games. Allow me to repeat: FREE. ARCADE. GAMES. The full sized classic cabinets. They had Operation Wolf, Gantlet and Tetris along with 3 or 4 other machines and a couple of pinball machines too. Occasionally, one of the machines would run out of credits, but I plunked in a quarter and got a bunch more credits. So, even if not strictly free - it's cheap. Also, the beer is reasonably priced - so, it actually quite a bit cheaper than trying to finish Gantlet or Operation Wolf in the outside world. Goddamn, 80's quarter-sucking arcade games were hard. The only downside is that it can be quite loud. And it's popular with the hipster kids. But the draft beer is good and reasonably priced. Sure the games are gimmicky but dammit, I like it. One of my favorite spots for hanging out with old/new friends. Old school video games paired with 30s retrofetishist hipster bar. I might even come alone to try and beat stage 4 of Galaga. The games are fantastic! That goes without saying. We went 2 nights in a row and both nights the crowd was a little too hip for us. Lots of young (I mean super young) people hanging out and having ridiculous conversations about "blah blah blah", "I was on so many drugs", "like totally, omg!" etc. but there were also a fair amount of us late 20's / early 30's types playing the vintage games and having a good time.
