November 12, 2017 was the first time that I attended Gethsemane Church, and I stayed. The first time that I attended Gethsemane Church, I went to church because I knew that I needed to be in church. I found a church where I was greeted by a church full of warm, friendly faces, and firm hand shakes! I found a church that preaches and teaches from the Holy King James Bible! I found a church that sincerely wants to see people come to know Jesus as their LORD and Saviour! I found a church that prays! I found a church where prayer is answered! I found a church where people laugh, laugh a lot! I found a church where children are busy being children, even during services! I found a church of people with ready & willing hearts, hearts that serve! I found a church that cares for, and tends to the needs in our community! I found a church that cares for, and tends to needs of the homeless! I found a church that is passionate about sowing the seeds of Salvation in our community! I found a church where they don't sugar coat, white wash or water down the Word of God! I found a church that is not concerned about being socially or politically correct! This beautiful church building was originally built by German immigrants and established in 1876. A treasured piece of its history remains in the bell tower--a bell brought over from Germany, inscribed with the words of Psalm 84:11: "The Lord God is sun and shield." Among the many remarkable aspects of Gethsemane Church is its connection to the Dirksen family. The late Senator Everett Dirksen, along with his twin brother and family, once attended services here. Dirksen, a prominent U.S. senator from Illinois, was known for his eloquence and leadership in American politics, playing a key role in passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964. His legacy of service and dedication to his country is a proud part of this church's history. In addition to its rich past, the church has preserved several Bibles found hidden in the church from the 1800s, further connecting it to the faith of generations before us. Yet, Gethsemane Church is more than just a historical building--it remains a thriving community of New Testament believers. Today, its walls still echo with the sounds of hymns and spiritual songs that glorify the name of Jesus. GREAT CHURCH! From the moment you walk in, you feel welcomed and loved. The worship is uplifting with powerful songs that truly prepare your heart for the message. The preaching is straight from the King James Bible--solid, biblical truth every time. I absolutely love attending here! One of the things that really stands out is the bus ministry. Every week, they faithfully pick up people, including kids and teens, for church and youth group.
