So, it's been a while since my family and I last went out to eat at a restaurant, and we landed on this one since it was both nearby and the prices reasonable for the fare that they offer. My wife and I had been here for lunch before and had a good experience, so this time we figured why not check it out for dinner? Turns out, it was a great idea. The wait for the food was a bit on the longer end, but to be perfectly fair, we ordered a LOT, so we certainly didn't mind. By the time the food hit the table, we forgot about it almost entirely because the smells of freshly made kitfo, lamb tibs, and this stewed chicken dish whose name I can't remember (but it came with a hardboiled egg!) hit our nose, nothing else mattered. The food was presented in a way that somehow matched the overall vibe of the restaurant, which at this time of night was set to be kinda toned down with dingy lighting and smooth music. Huge call out to my waiter that I curse myself for not getting his name, because he is, simply put, the best server I've ever had at a restaurant. Not only was he timely and discreet about topping off our waters, but also checked in about soft drinks as well, and when he heard my son saying the food was too spicy for him, he took it upon himself to get him something else to eat that wasn't spicy at all, and without myself or my wife asking. I had another destination in mind, but when I saw the sign that said they had indian, nepalese, and Ethiopian food, I stopped in my tracks. It wasn't a platter type of night, but both Indian and Ethiopian cuisines have some great appetizers, so we stopped in after a movie. It was cool to see the breakdown of a vibey bar scene on one side and a sit down area on the other period both sides had the World Cup showing, so there was really no going wrong. The woman who greeted us led us to decide where we wanted to go. According to their hours, they are open until 1AM. We decided to get the stuffed naan basket, sambusas, and chicken momos -- A nice but fairly light spread for the evening. We or later told that they were finished with the naan basket... For an Indian restaurant more than 3 hours before they closed, that was surprising to me... I should have specified whether it was naan in general or just that basket, but still. The other two items came after 25 minutes or so. The sambusas were fried HARD, but had a great flavor. The momos were solid! We had a good time catching up, and they did great keeping water refilled (mostly). It took a while to close out -- they probably thought we were invested in the game and not in a hurry, but it's a weeknight and we were on Metro's time. We ordered out from Ghar-E-Kabab and the food was only okay. Actually, the food seemed a little confused. The restaurant is both Ethiopian and Indian. We were looking for Indian food so we were surprised to find that the Saag dishes, which are usually made with spinach seem to be passed off here as authentic Indian, but they are really more like Gomen, which is more either collard greens or kale. So I think the kitchen is cutting some corners in trying to serve both cuisines at the same time. That said, the spice in the food was good - hot but not overkill. The Butter Chicken didn't really taste like Butter Chicken but more like Tomato Chicken. So all in all, not a great experience, not a terrible one either. read more

We ordered both kinds of ingera, the American (fluffier) style and the Ethiopian style. Both were different but fresh and tasty. We'd been wanting to come here since moving to area and finally got around to it last night. In a sea of Ethiopian places in Silver Spring, Ghar-E-Kebab also has a ew, btu we both were craving Indian food. Service was cordial, prompt and lovely, and we found the ambiance of people at the bar, a few other occupied tables and the random "scenic view of places around the world" footage on the TVs great. We had the Furaula to start, which were warm and super tasty. The accompanying chutney added a great flavor to it and I was happy we'd tried them. For our mains, my partner got the Non Vegetarian Thali with Lamb and I got the the Kadai chicken, although I think it's called something else on the actual menu in the restaurant. This was my family first time having Éthiopian food, we are so glad we went here the service was amazing and the ambiance was inviting. We asked the waitress to pick the food for us and OMG! The food was so good I called the restaurant. My favorite was the Doro Wet, beware it is spicy but I love spicy so I didn't mind. I'm also a fan of the Asa Dulet. There was a beef dish but I forgot the name. My five year old son loved the samosas I had to fight him for it lol. My husband had a great time waiting for the food dancing to their Afrobeat playlist. This restaurant was very different from what I was used to in Pittsburgh but was still very tasty. The rice desert that was a part of the thali was TO DIE FOR! Everything else was well spiced too. I have enjoyed this restaurant for years. They are always super polite and friendly there. From the moment you walk through the doors they are welcoming you, to the time you leave and they thank you for your business. Being seated is always quick and they accommodate you if you prefer another table in another area ( for whatever reason). The food is very tasty and doesn't take extremely long to come out. They are very attentive and always make sure your glass stays full. The atmosphere is quiet and intimate with a candlelight vibe. Best little hidden secret! What looks like a quiet and unassuming place has some of the best Indian food I've ever had. The chef is charming incredible to talk to. The bartender was welcoming and served proper drinks. I came here a couple of years ago and the food wasn't memorable then. I didn't really want to come here--I was actually hoping to go to Gusto's but my friend was starving after the Thanksgiving parade in DTSS. I tried telling him where Gusto was but you would have thought it was located in Timbuktu. Anyway, he didn't seem interested (you know when you're trying to suggest something and the person is just not feeling it). Ghar-E-Kabab is right across the street from the parking garage and he saw it and said "let's go there." We (really him) decided to go with the buffet--which is $10.00, not bad. The restaurant was half full and it smelled really good. I don't really care for buffets because I hardly ever go back for seconds but for $10.00, one plate was enough. I checked in (of course) and they have a free glass of wine with an entrée but we couldn't use it because we got the buffet. They gave complimentary naan which was nice and warm--probably the highlight. The mango chutney was overly salty, the lentil stew was basic as were the chicken pakoras. The worst thing was the butter chicken. The chicken was tough--I ate a little piece and left the rest. I've made butter chicken and mine was much better and I'm not even Indian! I didn't even bother with the rice pudding. The service was basic--nothing noteworthy and the food was lackluster, to say the least. I love Indian food (and normally Nepali food as well), but I was very disappointed recently with our experience. The waiter was curt and looked very much like he didn't want to be there. He didn't ask us about spice level, and I probably should have inquired about that as the food came back with literally no spice or flavor IMO. He didn't refill water until our glasses were empty, which I would have been ok with if the place was packed, but it was empty. The chicken was over cooked and when we asked the waiter of we could split our meal by two credit cards, he sighed and looked annoyed. Once again, the place was empty. I love Saag Paneer so my thought was chicken might be better for my stomach than cheese (I'm lactose-intolerant). Chicken was tasty, the sauce was just ok. It didn't help either that the dish didn't look so appetizing - no fault of theirs: it's just hard to make cooked spinach look pretty. - Baigan Bharta ($10.99) - eggplant baked in clay oven & cooked w/ Indian spices. Spicier than I expected. Mushy texture. One of my sister's favorite dishes. It's pretty good but I probably wouldn't order it again. - Cho-e-la ($6.99) - boneless duck marinated w/ Nepalese herbs & spices, and cooked in clay oven. I wanted to try something Nepalese, and this app was the most interesting-sounding on the menu. Not bad but the duck was a little salty. Glad I tried it but I probably wouldn't order it again. The entrees do come with a generous serving of Basmati rice - one serving can probably feed 2 people. We also got 2 orders of naan which arrived nice & warm. Our order also came w/ complimentary condiments (sweet brown sauce, green sauce, and some kind of relish). Service was very good - food arrived still warm about an hour later, and the delivery guy was very nice. Portions were very generous - enough food to eat 1-2 more times. This is a gem of a location that one could easily miss if you were passing by on foot and didn't know what to look for. We have ordered delivery from them several times and decided to dine-in on a random Friday evening. The staff was extremely friendly, and no reservation was needed. The dining room was clean, white table cloth style seating (with a paper cover) and extremely comfortable. We weren't particularly hungry, so we split an order of Garlic Naan, Vegetable Samosas, and Chicken Tikka Masala. It was a good amount for the two of us, their veg samosas were surprisingly spice filled (and tasted amazing). The entree order is of course served with rice. Very tasty, high quality food! Everything is made fresh, and you can taste the quality of the ingredients, and the skill of the chef. There were many different components to the Thali, and every single part of the dish tasted very well-made. The quality of the meats we tried (lamb and chicken) was noticeably great.
