My Golden Retriever Sam and I have been clients at this Veterinary Practice for thirteen years, since puppy hood. In that time, Sam has had more than his fair share of ailments and crises! Over the years the care and support that all the staff have shown to both Sam, and equally me, have been magnificent.
Sam was a difficult pup, showing aggressive and domineering tendencies to me. Throughout this time our vet always had the time to offer practical advice and encouragement, eventually referring us to an animal behaviourist. He was always interested in his progress and more importantly, he played an active part in taking on board the handling tips and techniques suggested. He worked incredibly hard to gain Sam's trust, and now he is the first to say that they share a very special relationship and understand each other. Without his support and understanding, I might have had no option but to give up on Sam. Thirteen years on, I'm so glad that I didn't!
This trust has been essential over the years as Sam has required treatment more often than most! Sam has been a very regular visitor to the surgery with numerous ear infections, eye infections, glass in his paw, sickness, epilepsy, thyroid problems, to name but a few! Mostly, Sam has been unfortunate enough to suffer from regular chronic episodes of acute moist eczema on various parts of his body, the areas often requiring clipping and shaving. He has often been in a great deal of pain and discomfort at these times, and hasn't liked to be touched. This caused me a great deal of stress and worry as without treatment, the eczema tends to spread very quickly, and I have been at my wits ends as to what to do. Our vet however, has the 'magic touch' with Sam. He took the time early on to build this relationship and when Sam has not let other vets within five feet of him, he is a different story! Not only does he always treat Sam with compassion and care, but he always reassures me about Sam's treatment. He himself has opened the surgery early in the mornings, and even on Sundays, so that he can help me administer Sam's treatment. Remarkable? Yes indeedbut even more so, when you realise that he has never once charged me for these 'extras' which to me are priceless.
This level of care is not confined to just the vet. Our vet nurse has, on more occasions than I can remember, opened the surgery at half past seven - over an hour early - every morning, sometimes for three weeks or more, so that I can take Sam there before work so that she and I can apply the cream together. She has readily volunteered to do this, never making me feel that this is a chore for her, and has given me peace of mind allowing me to care for Sam properly. She is now semi-retired, but her generous nature and commitment continue. Most recently, just before Christmas, Sam needed treatment on two patches of eczema that were really awkward to reach. Imagine my surprise, and gratitude, when concerned that he wouldn't get treatment on her days off, she said 'I know, bring him to my house every morning. You need to leave for work at 8, bring him at half seven'! Nothing has ever been too much trouble for her and she always goes the extra mile.
The above examples are just a drop in the ocean when I think of all that the practice has done for Sam and me. I know that without them 'going the extra mile' for Sam, I would have lost him 12 years ago. Sam has had remarkable care as have I in his lifetime.
Last week, I had to take the decision that every pet owner dreads. It was of tremendous comfort to me that our vet was there for Sam for his final days, again coming into the surgery especially to see him when he should have been on a course in Bristol. I shall never forget the kindness and support of all the staff at the practice, and know that Sam had the best possible care throughout his life. read more
