If you want a card or some wrapping paper in Formby this place is a no brainer. Why then do I…read morealways seem to try everywhere else in the village before plumping for here. The reason, I think, is twofold. One - inevitably there is someone I don't want to see browsing the aisles in here, someone I went to school with and can't be bothered to try and make interested small talk with ("oh, so you graduated and now you're just looking for a job but there don't really seem to be any around") The second and infinitely less anti-social of the reasons is that it always feels a bit cluttered in here - like there are a lot of cards bearing down on you. It sounds ridiculous but when it comes to picking out greeting cards I would probably have less choice, if there is too much I will panic and pick out a condolence card for a three year-olds birthday or something. This is of course an issue entirely of my own making and thus should be ignored - Derbyshire's really is the ideal place to get a card for any and every occasion. They also offer watch repairs (although a friend of mine who can barely tell the time himself once got a job doing this so I might have to query just how good this service can be). Oh and tea towels with Formby sights and scenery on them, which are make very nice presents.

Whilst Derbyshires is primarily a card/small gift/stationary/watch repair/flower shop (how many…read moreplaces in Formby village are that wide ranging), most of the time when I go in there I just end up heading to the back of the shop and playing with the collection of small toys they sell that are barely appropriate for people half my age to play with, let alone me. That section serves as a slice of nostalgia, harking back to a simpler time in my youth when I would visit the now departed Delahunty's, the true king of children's toys and bikes. However, whenever I go in there with the intention of actually buying something, I mainly use it to buy cards, of which there is an extensive collection. It is also handy when approaching an occasion such as Valentine's Day if you have no idea what to get your better half, offering a selection of chocolates and teddies if you are desperate enough. The watch repair counter is useful, but having barely owned a watch let alone a faulty one, I have not had the pleasure of using such a service.

The name of this shop is a little bit misleading, only a little bit mind. You might imagine that…read moremost of what is stocked here is of the home improvement sort-of-type-of thing and you would be sort of right but they also sell all sorts of other garden bits and bobs and things for doing manual jobs around the house; washing baskets, step ladders; door mats and many and much, much many more! Obviously I'm not really aware what these sort items might actually be used for - I'm far too important to do my own washing or tidying up or DIY. It's not that anyone else does it; I just don't. I live in a crumbling house surrounded by my own mouldering clothes and festering dishes. On the plus side I have a lot of free time. They also do key cutting here and have a pretty extensive selection of wall clocks and indeed I've personally bought a wall clock from here before which to this day ticks and tocks and all that good stuff. Obviously it's a bit more expensive here than at B&Q or Homebase but you pay a premium for being able to get the stuff without having to spend several hours of your life, and sacrifice a chunk of your soul wandering around a retail park.

Formby Hardware is an odd shop. As well as housing the usual hardware bits 'n' bobs, it also sells…read morevarious garden ornaments and decorations, something you wouldn't expect from a small hardware store such as this. This could be an attempt to compete with larger companies like Homebase and Focus, who completely blow this shop out of the water in terms of size and choice. However, if you're looking for something specific then this is the place to go, with its location in the middle of Formby village meaning you don't have to go out of the way to get all your DIY necessities, although it does come at a price. I don't generally use it very often (I'm not much of a DIY guy quite yet) so usually my trips in there are restricted to buying electrical tape for my footy socks. Whenever I go in there however, the staff are friendly and will happily point out which tape I'm looking for when they discover me looking puzzled as I end up in the complete wrong section, as well as reminding me of its correct location and recommending the best tape to use.

Fantastic flower shop and staff really friendly…read more I can see why Bromborough Flowers have been winning awards and are rated amongst the best on the Wirral. Lovely selection of flowers and low prices, and arrangements in store which were stunning. The business was recommended to me as a wedding florist by several of my friends, and they didn't disappoint, Pauline & Andrea were amazing throughout!! I booked a wedding consultation initially with Pauline for my wedding flowers and to share some ideas, she made me feel so relaxed and definately took the stress out of the process, offering fantastic and well informed expert advice. I never once felt pressured, sadly the same could not be said for some of the other florists with whom I had consulted with. After finally agreeing on my flowers and various things, I was kept in touch with throughout the process which certainly helped ease the nerves and worry. The 'big day' arrived and my flowers were presented to me at the hotel and as promised, the venue was fully dressed - I never once had any concerns, and the flowers just were simply stunning so much so it brought me to tears; the fact I had so many comments about them during the day confirmed that I had made the right decision in going to Bromborough Flowers. The biggest surprise (or maybe it wasnt given what I had been told by friends who have been here before), was simply the price... I had to ask Pauline to recheck a couple of times as it was massively cheaper than the other florists who quoted me in the area. Highly recommended in the highest possible way and I would not go anywhere else now!

Cassidy's is yet another example of the small, independent businesses that can be spotted…read morethroughout Formby village. Stocked with all the best fresh fruit, veg and flowers you could think of, Cassidy's represents a great alternative to supermarket giants Waitrose and Tesco. Buying your fruit and veg here not only leaves your stomach satisfied but also your wallet as their prices are amongst the best around the area, matching and even beating its competitors on a lot of their produce. The fruit in particular is lovely, with their apples having a great taste supplemented by a delicious crunch. Similarly, their strawberries are the best you can buy in the local area when in season. Whilst it might be easier for a lot of people to buy their fruit and veg with the rest of their weekly shop in Tesco or other such places, the uniqueness of independent businesses such as Cassidy's is something that need to be preserved so I encourage you to use it for your weekly fresh fruit and veg because for companies like these, every penny counts.

You may or may not know this but Formby is the asparagus capital of the known universe - honest…read more They produce the very best of the green vegetable thingy. Does asparagus count as vegetable - it looks like a weed to me? Well anyway - I'm not a huge fan of asparagus but I know plenty who are and who swear that the stuff grown round here is the asparagus equivalent of the holy grail and further that Cassidys fruit and veg is the place to get it. I should add that they also stock a great variety of vegetables which I consider absolutely delicious and do that very, very well too. My best ever, ever baked potato (and that is not faint praise coming from a jacket aficionado such as myself) was made from a spud bought at Cassidys and their summertime strawberries are by far the best you can get for miles around. They also do no-nonsense bunches of beautiful seasonal flowers and it is often here that my mum will pick up the first daffodils of spring.
