Sitting out and looking over the water really adds to the overall experience and makes it a great place to relax and enjoy a meal. Service can be a little slow at times, and on this visit the checks got mixed up, which was a bit frustrating. Gilligan's has a nice spot by the water, and a dock for tying up so you can stop in while boating. We landlubbers enjoyed the waterside views, watching the occasional boats as we ate our meal. The service was friendly, not fast, but we weren't in a hurry. The food was mixed - the complimentary hush puppies were excellent. My flounder sandwich with red rice was good, but not notable. While on family vacation, Gilligans was recommended. Since there were a lot of us, we called to see if we could be accommodated. We were told we could be but since there were so many of us (52) we were told we would be put in the conference room and given a limited menu. It was also stressed that for a group this size more notice should've been given. They also said they would waive the fee for the conference room. We are coming from Summerton and since it was over an hour drive and we would be given a limited menu that we didn't know what it consisted of, some opted out. When we got there and were shown to the room, the menu was extremly limited. We took a count of how many actually came and there was only 28 of us. The dining room had only 2 tables occupied. We asked if we could move out there and have the availability of the complete menu and were denied. There were more than enough tables to accommodate us. We said that if we hadn't called ahead and came in and were seated according to vehicles we traveled in, would we not be seated in the dining area. We were hatefully told no. It's for the convenience of the cooks. I asked if the cooks couldn't handle 30 diners at once? There were 28 of us and at this time only 2 diners in the restaurant. We were still not permitted in the dining area. We even said we would set at the tables as they were, no moving required. Still a no. Not being familiar with the area and already having traveled over an hour, we decided to stay. The very limited menu felt like the kids menu and they would've made much more money if we could've ordered from the regular menu. We did ask if we could at least order appetizers because they weren't included on the menu given us. Luckily, our waitress asked and that was allowed. (The alligator bite were the main reason several of us had come.) The food was okay, the waitresses were wonderful and we enjoyed ourselves because that's how we are as a family. So, my point is, if you have a large group and want a variety of meals to choose from, don't go to Gilligan's. read more

What a great spot in Mounks Corner! I feel like this is a mini shem creek. We came here on a Friday night in late winter so it was not busy at all...but it was 80 degrees out that day so we could still sit outside. My husband and I sat out on the dock area. It is pet friendly, and has a nice view of the river. Server greated us quickly and brought over a basket of hush puppies that were really good. I ordered crab cakes with a side of fries and corn. My husband ordered oysters and shrimp. My crabcakes were delicious, very flavorful and breaded nice for some texture. Corn was good and so were the fries. Located on the tailrace canal, Gilligan's is a restaurant focused on seafood that's not pretentious but comforting. Getting there is fairly easy, parking is wide open and the view is outstanding. Walking up to Gilligan's is an experience as it's nestled right there on the river which varies in speed and height depending on how much water is being let out of the lake. There are a few tables up front but take the time to walk on the wrap around deck to back and spend some time on the river. It's therapeutic and humbling as you can see how a river has so much strength while remaining beautiful. Walking inside, the interior is extremely laid back with simple paintings, obnoxious ocean blues, mounted fish and aquariums. Don't walk in wearing a suit & tie as you'll be overdressed, rather enjoy your flip flops and light weight clothing. The waitstaff is extremely pleasant, knowledgeable and makes you feel like the top priority. Also notice when sitting at the simple tables that they have a built-in bucket! This is great when dealing with peal and eat shrimp, oysters, etc. So how is the food? Well, this isn't like eating at some pinky up establishment in Charleston, rather it's down home, low country cooking. That generally means fried seafood is the main staple. The apps are simple but extremely satisfying, in a way that you know the treadmill will get a lot more attention in the next few days. First the hush puppies are the best I've had in decades. Slightly sweet, slightly gritty from the corn meal and fried to perfection. I honestly put down a whole basket by myself. The fried pickles, if that's your thing, are good. For me it was a bit of salt overload so buyer beware. Other notables are the gator bites which "tastes like chicken" but good, and the shrimp dip. The dip is pretty good and was a nice change from fried food. For dinner I got the fried shrimp. At first I thought it was a little pricy but the shrimp are big, not over fried, tasty and you get plenty of them. I really liked the side of red rice as it reminded me of traditional southern fair. The crab cakes were ok but a little too much breading. I like crap cakes to barely hold together, void of fillers like tons of bread. My sister got the fish taco's and enjoyed them however she's not as descriptive as me so I have nothing else to report! read more

Visited on a Sunday afternoon 45 minutes after opening but before the church crowd. We were seated immediately at a table overlooking the river. Drinks ordered and we viewed an extensive menu. Catfish Feast for $19.99 was a daily special, which I opted for, my girlfriend went with fish and chips. The catfish feast included 4 small bone-in catfish, nuggets, and catfish stew. Bone-in catfish was crispy but lacked much meat, the nuggets were excellent, as was the catfish stew. Included Cole slaw and cheese grits, no substitution with sides on the special. Cole slaw was ok, cheese grits were good. The fish and chips were excellent, good breading on the fish and not overcooked. Service was okay, waitress was attentive to our table and a manager, or other staff stopped by twice to ask how our meal was going. The view of the river makes this place, you can watch boats pass by, a fairly large alligator was hanging out south of the boat ramp across the river on this Sunday. Outside of the view, nothing really thrills me about this restaurant. The inside is outdated but meets the fish camp vibe, food is typically average. There are definitely better eating options but not with the accompanying view. Keeping that in mind should help your expectations visiting this location. read more

I enjoyed an hour drive from my Airbnb out to Gilligans. I was looking for a very specific but simple dinner - waterfront view and a grilled or broiled seafood platter. Online reviews were iffy but I'm not overly critical and Gilligans seemed promising enough. The view absolutely did not disappoint - even from inside - I typically would dine outdoors but it was cold and the deck didn't seem to be open. We were immediately given truly delicious hushpuppies, which I do not usually like. We ordered fried pickles from the specials menu, a fried shrimp basket with okra and corn, and a grilled seafood trio - shrimp, scallops, and mahi with grits and okra. The fried pickles were served quickly and were good but a bit more crunchy than I prefer. My trio was served with a (meh) crab cake instead of scallops. I mentioned this to my waitress who very nicely let me know due to rising costs and quality issues they had stopped serving scallops months ago - understandable but I really wish this had been mentioned prior to my food being served. The mah and grits were both REALLY good and my grilled shrimp were quality but had no seasoning. My daughter's fried shrimp were really not good at all - bad breading and greasy fried and the corn on the cob was just sad. read more

I was in town visiting family, and this restaurant was suggested. It was fairly empty, so we were seated quickly. Our waitress was really nice. You get hush puppies for free, and they had good flavor. They would have been excellent if there wasn't the taste of the cooking oil in every bite. I ordered the shrimp and grits. I figured it must be great because Gilligan's name was in front of it. It was not. It looked better than it tasted. The grits were not creamy. I could take a scoop out of them with a spoon and and the spoon hole would still be there. There was some cream sauce on there that I did not like. It almost reminded me of country sausage gravy, but without the sausage in it. The shrimp was good, and the sausage was okay. The sausage could have used a bit more cooking time. This place had the best snowcrabs I have had outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Seasoned perfectly and not dry, at all, as most steamed crablegs get. I'm so sad to write this review because this was one of my favorites for over 30 years. I've moved away from that area and only visit once in a while when I do I try to go by this restaurant. About two months ago I went and ordered crab legs And got extremely overcooked crab legs with some horrible oily substance not remotely close to butter, though it's advertised as butter. I asked if I could get real butter they said no. I went back three days ago when I was in the area and ordered something different. I got cold french fries, Cold collard greens with more ham than collard greens, cold, hush puppies, grouper fingers that were anything but grouper and fried to death in a horrible batter and peel and eat shrimp that would not peel like it had been frozen for too long or cooked too long. All in all a horrible meal at $30. The ambience was nice. The staff, excellent and friendly, but the food is despicable now. I went to the hot bar at Harris Teeter on the way home and got an excellent meal for 11.99 a pound. Gilligans should be ashamed and go out of business or do better. just disgusting and that's the best location in Moncks corner. read more

My son and I absolutely love coming here for our little lunch dates, he loves to eat by the water and scream "HEY" at the boats going by with a mouthful of their free hush puppies. The staff is so warm and friendly and the service has been impeccable every time! We adventured and tried the frog legs this time, which were actually a lot like chicken, I was able to get my son to eat a good bit of them! We were out fishing at lake Moultrie and came across this gem while driving back. It's about 2 miles from the lake/campground/recreation center called short stay. We were so happy with everything! The environment the service and most definitely the food!! We will be going back for sure! The only tiny complaint is that the beer fridge was not very cold so our beers were not very cold. We were able to get cold glasses from a different fridge though which helped a little. The location is great right in the river, food came quick and we had service with a smile! For those that really like other Gilligan's restaurants in the area, this is worth the trip up to the Tail Race Canal in Moncks Corner. Of course they have their signature hush puppies but for two people they provided us with enough for at least four! The food was really good, the server was quite good and the fried shrimp as always were good as we're the grilled scallops. After the meal, the deck provided the opportunity to go out on this deck next to the canal and enjoy the slow-moving boats in the no-wake zone and to watch the slow-moving water go past the deck. Unfortunately today the waterfront deck was being repaired and/or replaced such that most of it was cut off from access. Still there were at least four boats that were tied up and people going inside for some good food. The lunch menu is basically the same as the dinner menu but is much cheaper such as the fried shrimp dinner being $9 instead of $14. Well worth the price, whichever one you pay. read more

Answer to both was yes and I was quickly seated out back overlooking the Cooper River. Service was excellent and included a water bowl for my dog. My family ate supper on Easter Sunday , and it was amazing!! I am completely shocked that the current rating for this restaurant is only 3 stars. We dined in , with a group of 14 people. The wait was minimal, and the staff were amazing. We had 2 little ones with us, and they managed their outbursts perfectly. Our server was friendly, efficient, and very patient. Everyone received exactly what they ordered, and everything was fresh and delicious. No request got left unfulfilled. I couldn't be happier with our visit here. I have lived in Moncks Corner for 11 years and eaten there many times except for the past year or so. Since i have last been there the place has gone downhill. They still charge high prices (to be expected at a seafood restaurant) however their menus are so faded out you can barely read them and they no longer have fried clams or steaks on the menu. Only when the Cook feels like putting them on the board as a special which isn't often. I'm 48 and this is the fist time I have ever been to a seafood restaurant that didn't have these items on these menus! Last time I will eat at this restaurant! read more

We went to Gilligan's this afternoon and we were absolutely disappointed with the raw chips, undercooked mean (requested well done), and martini (I requested the margarita in the picture). The server explained that the drink menu isn't going to be the same as what's pictured? The "chef" couldn't understand what a well done burger was... The manager literally acted like I made this up when she approached my table- I attached pictures. Please don't waste your money at this restaurant! I literally went to the restroom after "eating" to wash my hands and there was no toilet paper in either stall and the bathroom was trashed. This place should be shut down tonight. read more

Literally one of the worst experiences Ive ever had at a restaurant. Had the fried flounder sandwich, very bland, the bread was dry and crumbly. I came with other family members and I don't recall what they ordered, but it took over an hour on a non busy evening to get out food. No refills. I wasn't impressed. Last night's experience was truly interesting to say the least. I will start with the good news: The food was great. The service however was somewhat of a complex orchestra of 'how can we make this worse?' Upon arrival, the manager told us it would be 30 minutes. No problem. We said we would grab a drink at the bar. He said we couldn't because they were short-staffed. We stared perplexingly at the people seated at the bar drinking. We did end up breaking his strange policy and ordered a few drinks. We even witnessed another staff member telling folks to go to the bar. Odd to say the least. While waiting on a table, we overheard him telling everyone just how short-staffed he was and apologizing. I did a count and the staff outnumbered the patrons 2:1. We watched with total confusion as 3 people bused the same table. Servers were literally running into each other in front of us. After being seated, the average drink turn time was over ten minutes. We ordered bottled beer and what I assume was wine from a box. Every time we had to ask again for our drinks, the same excuse came back about the short staffing. When the bill came, it was so incorrect that two managers and our server had to work for 15 minutes to fix it. It was over a hundred dollars off. Meanwhile the staff kept pouring out of the kitchen like angry bees from a hive. I had never seen anything like it. Our server told us that two tables had already walked out on her and she was absolutely devastated. Out of respect for her, I won't even go into all the details about just how bad her night was. I give two stars because the food was good and the server was genuinely trying to help. This restaurant needs an effective management team to support the staff it employs. read more

We arrived at a little after 6 pm and yes it was busy but the hostess said it would only be 10-15 minutes to be seated. 45 minutes later we finally got seated. I know the wait staff are short staffed, but it seemed they could only focus on one table at a time.
