I ordered here with my family for my birthday last night and generally enjoyed it. It was hit or miss. The side of fried calamari I ordered left a lot to be desired. It was rubbery and pretty flavorless, I think I'd opt against that if I were to order from here again. On the flip side, the chicken parmesan entree was very above par from your typical pizza joint. The cheese and sauce were both pretty tasty, and they give you a large portion. I definitely wouldn't order from here expecting a life altering dining experience, but if you want decent Italian fare at very reasonable UES prices, you've got a good option here. read more

Class on a Pan Gino's is one of the classiest pizzerias you'll ever visit. Walking in startles you because you have pull on a latch handle to get in. And then when you're inside you have to close the door behind you, like a real human being with manners. There's wine bottles casual and ready in the dining room. Mostly wood and brick styling. This is one of the best of the genre: great American dinning in the classic family neighborhood sense. It's fun-food is good (I have had several different pasta and chicken dishes there- I eat here once a week), wine is reasonable and everyone is nice since it is a family run business. It's my standby for ease of convenience- it's a few blocks or so away. It's reasonable and the portions are fare. I also have had good success with their deliver. Chicken Marsala is pretty good for the genre and they seem to know how to cook the pasta- a little more al dente. read more

This place has been my new go to spot for pizza in the UES. After reading about it in Slice, i tried it out. The 1st time, i thought it was average. After trying it a 2nd time, the place grew on me. The slices are pretty big compared to your other neighborhood pizzerias. The crust is pliable but not soggy. It has a nice crunchy texture and it holds the pizza pretty well. The tomato sauce isn't overbearingly sweet nor salty. It is seasoned well. The cheese is a bit overdone for me and a bit salty, but it grows on me after each bite. I usually like my pizza less cheesy, but this place still rocks. The cheese is melted to perfection and it is very stringy. The toppings are pretty fresh. I love the mushroom slice here. The garlic knots are also top notch. They are big and the fresh garlic is very pronounced in the garlic knots. The knots arent too small so they aren't overcooked and crunchy, nor are they too soggy. They are cooked to perfection and doused with a lot of EVOO and fresh chopped garlic. For the price you pay for pizza and knots, this place is better than nearby joints like Fat Sals, Italian Village, and Abitinos. read more

Went here last night for the first time and got a plain slice, a broccoli slice, and an eggplant slice. All three were fantastic, and the staff were also really great. Definitely going back here. I had the best fettuccini Alfredo here! Although plain, with no broccoli or chicken, it was perfect with its creamy sauce! Couldn't finish it but definitely wanted to. Service was great! This restaurant is an enigma: a white table cloth Italian restaurant in an expensive UES location that has absurdly low prices and only takes cash. Food is tasty and quick. Unfortunately the waiter is almost comically awful with such rude responses throughout dinner that our family kept looking at each other for confirmation that what we just heard was real. Another nearby restaurant recently charged me $18 for two meatballs with no pasta. When the check arrived, I swore I'd never abandon Gino's again. This place has incredible food at unfathomably low prices. $12 for spaghetti and meatballs. $13 for chicken parmesan. You can feed your family and friends without breaking the bank. And in case you were wondering, there's no sacrifice in quality. Their sauce is robust as any; their meat just as tender. The only thing you don't get here is smugness. Called in and placed an order for pick-up at Gino's on Friday night. The man who answered the phone was a bit rude and short with responses and did not allow for substitution of bowtie pasta instead of penne when ordering penne with chicken and broccoli. Settled for penne and headed over in 15 minutes to pick up the order. Upon arriving to pick up the food I was ignored for 2-3 minutes while standing at the counter before being greeted by a "yeah?" from the grumpy guy behind the counter. I'm guessing this is the same guy who answered the phone. Told him I had called in the order and he slid it over to me on the counter and told me a price that was $1.50 higher than the menu price. After complaining, he agreed to charge the lower price and after grumbling a little to himself took my money and handed back the change without a "thank you", "have a nice day", nothing. Just turned around and walked away. Food was decent, but not great. Came with a large piece of bread which was tasty and some parmesean cheese. Pretty middle of the road traditional italian: not great, but not bad for take-out either. I would go back again but avoid grumpy mcgrumps behind the counter and make sure I get the bill total over the phone before trekking over to pick it up to avoid a similar incident. read more

The plain cheese slice was not very good. There was way too much cheese and not enough sauce. The cheese was so heavy and greasy that it made the entire bread/crust underneath soggy. I prefer a crisper crust with less cheese and more sauce. Also the bathroom had no toilet paper. read more

If you go to this place before 1:00pm they will have the nastiest attitude with you the minute you enter the door, that's just the first problem. Upon ordering the food they pay no attention to you and make you repeat your self sometime even forgetting your order. Those were some of the bad things. Now for the good. Garlic knots good! Their pizza is great! Love the sauce and the size of the slice is HUGE! I'm giving this place 4 stars because their pizza tastes great but they do have some set backs, such as: 1. If you place an order when they are busy... pizza is still okay, but they don't pay extra attention to it. For example there will be more dough in one area than the other and the cheese to sauce ratio is 4:1. If you like extra cheese by all means you'll love it, but I would like a little more balance on the pizza. 2. They take FOREVER to answer the phone. This puttanesca was a fine, fine specimen, almost a fable in its pure, inconceivable delectability, nothing less than a perfect red sauce swimming with olives and capers and so much more, poured over the classic pasta espaghetti like the steaming regurgitation of some beautiful dream from God Himself. I speak this not lightly. Indeed, I speak with desire, strong, deep desire-- desire to return to Gino's for some more of that sweet sweet puttanesca RIGHT NOW-- but alas, it's closed! Ye gods! Tomorrow I head to LaGuardia at 7:15am. Gino's, why must you torment me so with your willful 12:00pm Sunday opening, thereby ensuring that I forgo one final serving of puttanesca for breakfast?! It's fine. I understand. The genius men of Gino's need their rest, and I blame them not for it. Rest those hands, gentlemen-- rest those hands that have done so much for this workingman's tongue. I can't believe this place isn't more crowded. how could you beat chicken parmesan with a plateful of spaghetti for JUST 9 dollars!!! it's yummy and you get to bring home leftovers. i also like the shrimp salad with goat cheese ...ooooh... my roommate loves LOVES the avocado salad. i eat here once a week and then walk past tony di napolis where i know people are spending more than twice the amount for an italian meal. i'm not too sure about the penne. my friend had that once and he didn't seem to enjoy his meal that much. but you could wash it down with a half caraf for 8 dollars. Old school pizzeria/restaurant. It reminds me of those I went to when I grew up in Brooklyn and Queens. Family owned and run business, which is becoming a rarity in NYC. I like this place, I like it a lot. This is your quintessential neighborhood Italian restaurant. Came here last Saturday night -- we ordered the chicken parmesan and chicken piccata. Both were great, totally different obviously. I'd say the chicken parm was a tad better. I had some spaghetti bolognese on the side that was also delish. Seriously, this is New York pizza as I remember it growing up in the Bronx! Pizza is supposed to have a nice crisp Crack when you fold it in half, unlike those play-doe dollar slices that have been popping up everywhere. The bread, the cheese, & the sauce are all delicious. My go2 slice is the tomato & garlic. The prices are decent too, specialty slices are around $3. You can't even get a hotdog at greys for that price nowadays. No frills, slices to go, but an extensive menu with daily specials that barely fit on one page. Most dishes are around $11-$12. Last night I got the Eggplant Rollatini and I'm still thinking about it. The house salad was great too, skimping out on the greens in favor of other vegetables (Carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, olives) in a light vinaigrette. A previous trip had me ordering the Penne Vodka which was the kind of quality you should expect, and no less. So what if there isn't much "Ambiance". My boyfriend and I ate at this place for the first time tonight and will not be going back. We both ordered pasta dishes off the specials menu. His was so bad that he couldn't even get 1/4 of the way through it. And his was a relatively simple dish. It was like a freezer meal! Incredibly LOW quality ingredients. Mine was almost as bad. I ordered lobster ravioli and spinach ravioli in vodka sauce with mushrooms and other weird vegetables you wouldn't normally pair with that but I thought id try it... Sauce was worse than from a jar, so salty, and I'm pretty sure the mushrooms were from a can. We ordered "fried mozzarella" to start, thinking that this would be fresh homemade italian stuff but instead, we got mozzarella sticks from a freezer. Also pretty sure the "olive oil" on the table is either the cheapest you can get or vegetable oil or something. Not good. We left promptly with my bf's plate almost full and instead of asking us if we enjoyed the meal the waiter said "oh that was fast." Yea it was fast because your food sucks!!! One of the BEST slices of pizza in the Upper East Side. Reasonably priced and the couple that owns the restaurant are friendly and very welcoming. I love this place and highly recommend checking it out if you're looking for a great slice in the Upper East. They also have sit down lunch and dinner available. I am not the person to ever write reviews on restaurants, but my experience at Gino's was the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. They call themselves "Gino's Pizza" but encouraged us to not order their pizza because of how long it may take. Our waiter could not have been more rude and careless. It is a cash only establishment but we were not told this until it was time to pay so I was forced to walk two blocks to the nearest ATM just to have to walk back and pay for the cold appetizers and the most pathetic, dressing-less chicken caesar salad I have ever tasted. I am a little behind on writing this review as I've been going to Gino's and loving it for 20 years. It's a true neighborhood gem, and I've taken all my out-of-town friends here because it's authentic, consistent and the people are nice. Are they effusive and mid-westernly cheerful? No, but this is NEW YORK, people, and they are a family running a business, not Disney automatons. The pizza is the best on the UES, and trust me, I've tried it all. I've eaten the spaghetti with clams (fab), the bolognese (fab), the meatball sub (fab), the chicken parm (fab)...well, you get the idea. It's small but usually bustling, and generally, you can hold a conversation without screaming. I really like this place. It's a local neighborhood place. They only take cash, but the prices are very reasonable and the food is very tasty. The chicken parm sandwiches are very good, and last time I went they were sold out of bread, so I'm thinking others agree on that. I also had the chicken Marsala which was really tasty. They offer house wines for $4 a glass, which you don't see outside of happy hours very often. All in all a very good Italian restaurant. Definitely give it a try! read more

Not only did this place "run out of ricotta" on a bustling Friday night, they were rude and dodgy about. We were having a birthday celebration in the neighborhood and decided to order because they were close by. On the phone, we tried to order a white pie, and we're harassed off the phone by an angry woman who insisted that they didn't have any with no explanation. We called back because we were confused and still wanted to order, and she once again came onto the call with a standoffish attitude screaming that there was no pizza Bianca. She also rudely left the call by just grumbling "bye." When I arrived at the store to pick up the pizza, what did I see bit a slice of white pie in the counter window. I asked about the situation to a response of frowns and a hurried "we don't have ricotta." I then asked about my order and she responded by huffing and saying "it's not done." The worst part, as I stood here watching them literally start my pizza, I heard numerous phone calls of this same nastily ride hostess having pleasant conversations with everyone on the other end of the line. PRICING: Awesome - not exactly bargain basement prices, but salads are around $8-10 and good portion sizes. Pastas are around $10-15. ATMOSPHERE: Relaxed, is more of a family/casual place to eat than a date kind of place. TV on the wall in case you need to catch some sports. They are kid friendly - they have highchairs if you need. Small dining room, most tables seat 2-4, though in the back there are bigger round tables for groups. FOOD: Delicious! The food is pretty simple - you won't find any elaborate preparations here. I love the caprese salad to start - three big stacks of tomato, fresh mozzarella, and roasted red pepper w/a little olive oil. Penne ala vodka is good, but fairly simple (no bacon/panchetta, scallion, etc.) - I prefer Patsy's when it comes to that. The baked ziti and the lasagna are both great. SERVICE: This is also relaxed...meaning that while they aren't completely inattentive, it's not the quickest service I've ever had. They get a bit overwhelmed if more than three or four tables are seated - but the food comes out fairly quickly once you order. DELIVERY: Never ordered delivery from here, but I know they do. CASH ONLY!! Keep that in mind - kind of stinks because there isn't an ATM in the restaurant, but there are a couple of bodegas around the corner in case you forget. read more
