I've heard the words that this is The Best Japanese restaurant in Tucson, ever since I have been longing to come over and check it out since I am a huge fan for fresh seafood. So four people dropped in Friday night, one of us has been to Japan recently spoke highly about the food. And hypothesis has been tested, and the conclusion is this is the best Japanese restaurant in Tucson, hands down. The food are authentic and delicate. I am just a little bit upset about the thickness of the sashimi, but maybe the sushi just wanted all of us to have a piece so he cut it a little bit thinly to accommodate the number of people in one table. back in town for a month and ginza did not disappoint. stopped in on a friday night around 6pm and snagged a table. water and hot tea were served quickly and we placed our orders a few minutes later. still love the side salad with the ginza ginger dressing; my SO had an oyster shooter which he said was terrific. the eggplant was great; soft and hot and soaked up its sauce. my udon soup with tempura veg on the side was perfect for a cool evening. the chilean sea bass, although the portion was smaller than expected, was perfectly cooked. fried calamari was piping hot and yummy. their green tea is my gold standard for green teas. tables filled up fast yet the noise level was not annoying. our server was terrific and fun to talk with. such a great place! read more

The quality of the sushi at this place is among the best in Tucson. However, the dining experience at this place makes me rather grab my sushi at Whole Foods. Two things I didn't like: 1) The clientele in this place are obnoxiously loud af. It doesn't help either that one of the sushi chefs banters back and forth with sake-drunk patrons at the bar. Annoying. And 2) on this particular visit, the sushi chef--same guy yuckin' it up with the patrons--hand delivers my two salmon skin hand rolls to me from across the bar at different intervals instead of serving them on a plate together. I never was a at sushi bar where the chef did that. My perception of class in this place dropped for me after that. I think I'll stick with Whole Foods' sushi. read more

When it's busy, they don't pick up the phone so you can make a reservation. So then, when you stop by, let's say 8:00, you have to wait and wait. By this time it is near closing at 8:30. However, the sushi chef starts to pack up and go home, literally, at 8:30. So you either have to order more than you might want to have, or not order enough and go home hungry. Plus, the young staff is so discombobulated and disorganized, they should be working at the takeout window at McDonald's not at an expensive restaurant. read more

This place never disappoints! I am an avid sushi fan and this is one place in Tucson I have never had a bad experience. The fish is always top tier quality and fresh. The staff is also very helpful with providing suggestion or letting you knwo what cuts of fish are in your "chef selected" bowls. I have three things I always get here. The Chilean Sea Bass, Ginza chirashi supreme and an order of Nigiri aburi salmon toro. The Chilean sea bass is marinated and charred in a sweet sauce that gives the fish a lobster like taste. The flesh of the fish is meaty and the charred skin is so satisfying. Chewy and flavorful. It adds a good counterbalance to the soft fish. Next up, the chirashi bowl. Packed with sashimi of the deluxe fish variety. This pretty much means the higher end fish are all you will find in this bowl. It varies from time to time what fish you will get in the bowl depending on what is in season, but it always comes with a huge amount of uni. The staff is always available to let you know what fish is featured in your bowl which is good to know in case you want to order more of a particular fish. Lastly, the aburi salmon toro. I always get an order of Thai and save it for my last bite. This fish is so fatty and sweet, it feels creamy in your mouth. Almost buttery! It is lightly torched on top to give it a charred flavor without overpowering this delicate fish. It's topped with a dollop of a special green sauce. Thai sauce makes the bite so delicious! At first I thought it was a hatch green chile sauce. Turns out it's some Japanese pepper stored in a little jar. This little dollop packs so much punch and flavor. It's a prefect last bite. Make sure to always check out the specials board and ask the waiter if there is anything interesting worth a try. read more

It's hard to find quality sushi in the desert but Ginza Sushi has it down! You can taste the freshness with each bite and dish. It is pricier compared to other sushi spots in town, but you're paying for exceptional service, chef's expertise, and food quality. My fiancé and I's first time and was great. We walked-in and were greeted and seated right away. The staff was really friendly and knowledgeable. They gave us great recommendations and guided us through the menu as it was our first time. We ended up ordering tuna and salmon sashimi, an order of the mussels, the Ginza Chirashi Supreme, Ceviche Roll, and an order of the Blue Fin Toro (located on the Day's Specials board!) Holy cow, everything tasted amazing! The Ginza Chirashi Supreme features deluxe selections of sashimi that rotates frequently depending on seasons. Great for those adventurous/explorative eaters! The mussels were cooked to perfection with a creamy, delicious sauce. The Ceviche Roll was creative and amazingly tasty. The sashimi was great but the main highlight was the Blue Fin Toro!! Very sweet and fatty... almost buttery! I would've missed it if I didn't check out their specials board so don't miss it. Overall, we had a good experience with their fresh and top tier quality dishes. Because of the price, this place will be more of a "date night" spot for us. But again, worth it! Freshest sushi, friendly staff, felt like home. I've been looking for fresh raw fish/sushi since I moved from Hawaii in November, but I've been very reluctant to eat any fish seeing that the desert is nowhere near an ocean. Thus, no sushi for me. Upon a weekend visit to Tucson, I came across an article talking about this Ginza rand how the owner is from Japan and carefully selects his fish. They also spoke of "toro," which is a very expensive cut of fish dad would only be sold at the freshest and highest quality places. It was then that I knew I could have peace of mind eating at this restaurant and not get sick. Basically, my partner and I ordered a crap ton of sushi, and we ate it all. The toro was perfect; soft, nice temperature, melt in your mouth. The sushi was beautiful, playful, and melody of flavors. We enjoyed every bite and accompanied it with a bottle dry sake. I highly recommend this place if you are in Tucson. You will not be disappointed. read more

Now you might ask, "Joanna, you are in the desert - why on earth would you eat sushi?" Well, because Ginza is GOOD! They're located in a strip mall with a few other restaurants so parking might be a challenge at busy times. The space is small so definitely make a reservation especially for parties of 4 or more. I really do like the interior - it has that izakaya feel. For the most part, we stuck to rolls - our group of 4 was served a giant platter of nicely presented rolls. Everything I tried was fresh and tasty but I especially liked the 911 roll. The Mister opted for the special "combo" which netted him sashimi, nigiri, maki and soup - it was a good deal. Overall, the quality here is high and the prices are not outrageous. Go ahead, eat sushi in the desert. EDIT: I forgot to mention the Zen garden in the toilet. It's easy to get intimidated by the price per roll, but the fact is that $45 for a boat for two people is roughly equal to your favorite all-you-can-eat spot in town - with better quality sushi. Our boat was complete with the Vegas roll, spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll, california roll, and the previously unknown fujiyama roll. The fujiyama roll was our absolute favorite. If you're really searching for an understanding of what good fresh fish tastes like, be sure to grab sushi with the fish on top of it. There was no denying that the tuna and salmon on our rainbow roll was decent quality. In addition to our boat, I insisted on the Teppan Squid. It was everything I wanted with the teriyaki sauce on it. I really like this place. It does have an "Izakaya" vibe to it with its social vibe, one-dish orders, and dim(mer) lights. HORRIBLE customer service. Called and asked if they did takeout: person I spoke with said "only if you come in person". I then asked how long it would take for a few rolls of sushi and they said "20 minutes". Hopped in the car and drove over, and the manager/hostess said "we aren't doing takeout tonight." When I said that I had called and been told they did, she found the person who I spoke with and confirmed what I had been told but said that the person shouldn't have said that. Proper response would have been: "Our mistake. You drove all the way over here, why don't we make an exception and make you those rolls." Sushi dinner last night at Ginza. We have been there many times before. But something has changed and not for the better. I didn't see any familiar faces and wonder if it has changed management? Things started out well with good seaweed salad, but it was all downhill from there. The sushi - rolls and nigiri - was all pretty bad. The cuts of fish in the nigiri were noticably small and the fish quality was mediocre. But it was the rice that killed it all. The rice in the sushi was terrible. I'm not sure what went wrong. Maybe undercooked? Or stale? I am not exaggerating when I say that the pre-made sushi I have purchased in a box at Sprouts is better than the sushi I got at Ginza last night. I also think the prices have gone up substantially. Ginza is not cheap. Sushi restaurants rarely are. But for "grocery store" quality sushi, that just adds insult to injury. I guess we will be looking for a new sushi place in Tucson. read more

The atmosphere here was amazing, there are great traditional decor pieces giving you the feeling of a Japanese Izakaya with a modern flair. I was definitely looking forward to the food once we took a look at the menu, too. However, the sushi we ordered was expensive and somewhat sub-par. The fish tasted a bit old and the rice was a somewhat hard. Despite Ginza's label as a sushi restaurant, I definitely wouldn't come here for the sushi! But, what I did love was their Izakaya food and traditional menu items. I really liked the fried baby octopus, and the gyoza was pretty good. Many of the menu items were things I hadn't been able to find anywhere else in Tucson, like the chicken karage, which was pretty authentic and tasty. The food wasn't the best by far, but because so many of the menu items are things I've never seen elsewhere in Tucson, I was still impressed. Our dessert was fabulous though! We got the matcha cheesecake which came with a scoop of matcha ice cream, and the flavors were perfect. We decided on this spot as we drove down from our hike, and I'm glad we did! First of all, the staff was super friendly and attentive, and was quick to make jokes and connect with us. Miso soup was out in no time, and they had great pictures on their menu which made it easy to pick dishes we would like. We both decided on the Salmon Specialty Bento from their lunch specials, and shared their Tropical Roll made with mango. It was all so good! The Sashimi was surprisingly fresh tasting (which is crazy, since we're in the middle of Arizona), the teriyaki salmon had great taste, and the sushi roll was different but delicious. My friend and I both kept raving about the food and the great view of the mountains that the restaurant has. The staff checked in on us plenty and kept our waters full, too. The only item my friend was not as into was the hand roll because of how much seaweed is used to wrap it. I haven't tried it yet so I have no opinion, but everything else made it more than worth it. Ginza Sushi is an amazing restaurant for so many reasons. Throughout the pandemic, we have enjoyed the convenient take out and the food is always well-presented and packaged very carefully. A few weeks ago, we took the leap and had dinner outside at the restaurant. This was the first time eating at a restaurant for us since March 2020, and we couldn't have made a better choice. The food was amazing, but even beyond that, you could just tell how much the staff cared about providing a safe and comfortable experience.
