On a random weekday we came here for a swee t treat after lunch seeing all the great reviews. We ordered stuff at the counter and just stood inside since we'd just come from a nice lunch and didn't want a sit down service again. We got a pistachio cannoli which was topped with so many pistachios.. the filling was light, the outer shell was perfectly crispy. Overall just delightful.. but the true hero of this spot for me was their hot chocolate. It was thick, dark and not too sweet.. a perfect combination when it comes to hot chocolate. It was sooo good that we came back again just for their hot chocolate. They have a dining room inside with plenty of seating so maybe next time I'll do that. Highly recommend this spot.. the reviews don't lie!!
Came to get the gelato here because of the raving reviews. We came late on a Tuesday night and waited around 15 minutes in line. You pay first with what size you want and if you want cup/cone. Felt rushed ordering, they gave us a cone even though we paid for a cup. Make sure you know what you want before hand because he did not like when we asked what the flavor profile difference was between lemon and limoncello (we tried looking it up in line but unfortunately there's no signal here). Pistachio gelato was really delicious nice and creamy!! I prefer pistachio bits in my pistachio gelatos for added texture which this one didn't have but that's not to say the gelato wasn't amazing it's more of a persona preference. The lemon was very tarty and refreshing!
Old world charm! On the recommendation of our apartment host, we visited Giolitti for a gelato. The café is just beautiful - it exudes old world charm with elegant wood panelled interiors and glass display cases filled with delicious looking food. The coffee is nothing special, but the gelato was sublime!
It was my first time visiting and overall lots of options. First you pay and then you go to the counter to get what you ordered. I got a small and it comes with two flavors. You can only eat in if you don't order the to go options otherwise if you get to go you won't be allowed to eat inside. Overall it has the ambience of a milkshake shop!
This was one of our favorite gelato spots across all of the cities we visited in Italy! The place is massive and there was a large crowd of people, as it deserves. You order the size you want and pay at the register, and then take your ticket to the counter to order your flavors. I got the pistachio and dark chocolate, and o m g was this delicious. Maybe it was because it was my first gelato in Italy but I was actually mind blown by how good it was. I've had my fair share of gelato, but the flavor and texture of this was perfection - so smooth, and the pistachio and dark chocolate flavors were so intense and rich. I can still remember being astonished by how good they tasted. There is a lot of good pistachio gelato out there, but this one was something special for sure. Highly highly recommend trying!
A great gelato spot that was in an easily reachable location - they do not offer seating for their customers who only order gelato though, only for those ordering food/drinks. You pay at the cashier and bring your receipt over to another line to get your gelato. Lines move quickly though. The ambiance is casual. They have lots of flavors - we tried the pistachio and salted caramel, both of which were delicious. The salted caramel was sweeter than I expected.
While traveling in Italy, a family member highly recommended Giolitti's gelatos. So, when we were in Rome, we found a branch near where we stayed and decided to try it. The gelato is superb! They have many flavors, and you can choose a few for your cone or cup. The larger size lets you mix more flavors. On our first visit, we tried about four or five different flavors and loved them so much that we stopped for a second time a couple of days later. Their gelatos are very flavorful and not too sweet compared to the average ice cream and gelato in the US. The line was long, so you might have to wipe your mouth often if you're drooling too much while looking at all the gelato options. The staff is very quick and helpful. It's an experience worth trying if you are in Rome.
Wow!!! Amazing gelato here!! I know there are many gelato places to choose from, but you have to try this place and compare it to other places and you will see the difference. The line was very very long when we got there. Don't be afraid to get in line though since the line moves quickly! We were out in the street waiting and line was constantly moving. You paid for the size of gelato and then you stand in another line to get the flavors you want. There's indoor seating, but you are not allowed to sit there if you are just ordering the gelato. There's a line to sit in the cafe.
Probably the best gelato I had in Rome, if not very close. It was both thick and creamy and the flavors were rich and a wide range of them. I went back twice to confirm how I felt about it. My favorite coffee flavored gelato stop. Loved the old school feel of Giolitti. It was very crowded on both my visits, but the line moves quickly. Their system is that you pay first and pick out your flavors after, which can be a little confusing. Definitely a staple worth visiting.
Our Airbnb was few blocks away from this place, there was always a line here so decided to check it out. The gelato was just okay, nothing special. They have sir down service and to go as well, you pay a little extra with sit down table service. Staff is super friendly. I'd though skip the place if looking for authentic gelato flavors.
Super popular gelato shop that opens late! Pay first at the front then head to the counter to get your gelato in either a cone or cup. It was 10:30 PM, but still busy with a lot of people enjoying their gelato outside. Theres a lot of flavors to choose from. I went for a small which includes two flavors: I picked strawberry and pistachio. The gelato was so good! The flavors were rich and the consistency was perfect. They have a lot of reviews for good reason - they have really good gelato. Highly recommend this spot for gelato in Rome!
€2.50 for small gelato (up to 2 flavors) and €4 for medium (2-3 flavors). Pay first at cashier then go to gelato counter where men in shirts and bow ties serve up dishes or cones of your chosen flavors. Between the two of us we selected coffee, biscotto Oreo (no Oreos in mine though), pistachio (the best IMO), chocolate, and Nutella (inedible bc it was like cold Nutella on steroids-so thick and sweet and cloying we threw it away). You can opt for a bit of whipped cream on top of the cone or dish. Beware they'll charge extra if you eat in the shop which also sells a plethora of cookies. read more

Very good. I got the pistachio and chocolate. Pistachio is a must if you come here. Chocolate was okay but I wasn't particularly impressed. I think I might have appreciated this place more if I got a different flavor. They gave me free whipped cream. The whipped cream is legendary. A small size gets you 2 flavors. Medium gets you 3, and large gets you 4. I believe this is the standard for most gelaterias in Italy. read more

You'll hear from a bunch of people that this is a prime spot to get true Italian gelato, but honestly it's way overrated. The interior of the place was really nice, but you couldn't sit down inside while you eat your gelato, which leads to a lot of people standing around awkwardly and making the place stuffy. Additionally, the staff were incredibly rude. They spoke some English, but you could tell they weren't thrilled to have to speak it. (Nothing wrong with that, as it is important to know some of the language of the countries you're traveling to, but if you can help bridge a language gap between yourself and a foreigner then there's no need to be mean about it.) The two men that helped me and my aunt and uncle from behind the counter were very annoyed when we asked for samples. They even had the nerve to slam a palm down on the counter to make us order faster. Please be advised that if you do go here, you have to pay for your gelato at the register at the front before you order the flavors from the counter in the back, and then give them the receipt, or "ticket," as they will call it. And they will get annoyed if you don't know this on your own, though there are no signs that will tell you this. The gelato was nothing special either, and was in fact not very enjoyable. Would absolutely not return. read more
I ate gelato here 3 out of my 5 days in Rome (no shame) :) If you want to take your gelato to go, you pay at the counter first. 2.50 euro per small gelato, only slightly more expensive than other gelato places in town. What I love about Giolitti is the variety of flavors. They have around 25+ different flavors to mix and match from. My favorite combo was mango and vanilla. They also have a homemade whip cream that they top each cone with.. seriously good. A stop at Giolitti for gelato is a MUST if you are in Rome! read more
This is the most wonderful gelato I've ever had. I made it my mission to come here and looked forward to coming here the whole time I was making my way down to Rome. I tried the nutella gelato twice and it was like placing frozen nutella right on top of my ice cream. I read in a book that this is the Pope's favorite gelato: the Pope did not steer me wrong. The staff is very friendly here and if I ever come back to Italy, I would not be able to live with myself if I didn't come here. I loved Rome but would purposefully put Rome in my travels just to come here. I would even put Rome on my travels if I was nearby in France or Switzerland, all for this gelato. read more

Delicious pastries and gelato. It's popular so don't come in the late evening without expecting a 10-15 min wait. The cannoli were so good-- thick crunch shells with such creamy sweet filling. The gelato was rich, smooth, and bursting with flavor. read more
My husband and I returned (after 4 long years!) for their unique gelato flavors. My husband went for their rice and I went with their masala custard. Unfortunately because the line was long and people were cutting in all directions, we weren't able to ask for samples before choosing our flavors. I was disappointed by my choice (unless you really really like red wine!). The alcohol flavor in my custard was too overwhelming. My husband did however enjoyed his rice gelato (actual rice folded within that gave it an extra texture). Overall - aside from some interesting flavors, we didn't think it was worth the hype and extra cost. With so many gelateria in the city, one can get amazing gelato without being pushed, shoved like we did in Gioletti. read more

Really great gelato. Doesn't disappoint at all. It's hard to judge service because it was packed when I went, so they're just trying to serve as many as they can, but for what it is, I appreciate them getting everyone's gelato out to them as quickly and efficiently as they can. Pistacho, chocolate and fresh milk were the flavors I got, and man was it frikken delicious. It was super cold out, but didn't stop me from enjoying gelato in Rome. read more

Delicious! Lots of gelato flavors to choose from. In addition to gelato, they also have a bunch of baked goods neatly displayed, candies, cappuccinos, etc. Pay first with the cashier then take your receipt to the specific counter (baked goods counter, coffee counter, or gelato counter). They have a wide variety of baked goods and candies, they look and taste delicious. This is by far my FAVORITE gelato place in Rome! Super fresh, creamy, smooth, light, well blended, and naturally flavored. I love the prices as well, for a small cone with 2 flavors it was €2.50. They also offer complimentary fresh whipped cream on top if you'd like. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, but you have to pay for waiter service. Restrooms are in the back and clean. Employees are friendly. read more
Best gelato in Rome! I don't even like pistachio normally as a flavor because in the States, it's very artificial, however at Giolitti, the pistachio flavor is nutty and fantastic. Get it and you won't be disappointed. All the flavors are great here. I also got the tiramisu which was delicious. If you must have gelato, try it here. Apparently it's the most famous gelato place in Rome. The Obama girls visited and learned how to make gelato here. Sit-down service costs extra and they offer free wifi to paying customers. Take-away cones are about 2-3 euro and sit down gelato is 7 euro. This place is also near the Pantheon. read more
Giolitti has been here since1900 so they must be doing something right! A stone's throw from the Pantheon and near the Italian Parliament (we were wondering why all the armed guards nearby!), we had a hard time finding it since we had to do some detours because some roads were closed. But it is worth it! The interior is very spacious and there are a lot of outside seating as well (they probably charge more if you sit outside) so if you don't need to sit down, go straight to the counter, pay up and take your receipt to the gelato guys behind the counter. When we came here midafternoon, it was a madhouse! some people weren't even queing up! I don't like pushing people JUST so I can get to the front. Thankfully, the guys behind the counter operated with such efficiency to accommodate everyone. Since we had a very heavy lunch beforehand, we decided to get flavors that would act as palate cleansers: the limoncello and coconut proved to be just what the doctor ordered! The flavors are so memorable! If you're from SF, you'd understand when I say, this is the Bi-Rite of Rome. Go at least once! read more

GO HERE FOR GELATO! I had two girlfriends recommend this place so I knew I had to come. You purchase the size you want at the cashier by the door, honestly the best priced gelato in town. You then go over to the gelato counter and give them your receipt and tell them if you'd like a cup or cone (go for the chocolate covered cone, you only get it with a medium or large) I'm a creature of habit so stuck with the same flavors each time I went but I can tell you that all the fruity flavors are amazing and the stracciatella was delicious! The men behind the counter are hiakrous and kind and make you feel like you're part of the family. What also seemed common here was the pastries and cafe lattes. You can pass up this place when you're in Rome it's so good. read more
So some things to keep i mind You need to pay first. Choose your amount of scoops i choose 2. Then proceed on another line for the gelato. Lines seemed long and moved quick but i think the gelato should be kept colder.. I choose pistachio nut and gnutella. The gnutella needed more cream in it i think but very rich, and pistachio was delicious! read more
During my trip to Italy, I was in search for great gelados and this place did not disappoint. How it works: Wait in line and pay first and then go get your gelato. Very good pricing. Here is the breakdown: Gelato- they have a huge gelato selection with many choices to choose from. If you are one of those that can't make up your mind, ask for suggestion or top sellers. Or if you know exactly the flavors you enjoy, I advice you to choose that and then have one flavor that you normally don't order to try it out. Service- it was very fast and the staff is very friendly. Decor- very traditional shop with a very authentic decor. Overall- great gelato so if you are in town worth checking it out. read more

The gelato place I recommend to everyone and come back to every time I'm in Rome! They change some of their flavors out depending on the season! The yogurt and wild berry flavors during the summer are amazing! I heard they have lavender during winter! They have a lot of flavors to choose from. You must pay at the counter for what you want if you are doing "take away" and then you give the receipt to the men behind the gelato! Note If you are getting a cone to go, you can't sit inside or on the tables. you may only sit at a table if you order and pay from a server! Recommend trying both aka making 2 visits (but you will probably make more) since you can get some interesting desserts when you sit down. Hands down my favorite gelato place. read more
As you've probably gathered from all the Yelp reviews, this place is the shiz when it comes to gelato. For one, it's a hop-skip from the Pantheon and a 10 minute walk to the Trevi Fountain. Open late, it's great fun to grab some gelato and go on a nighttime stroll to these beautiful works of culture. When we arrived, I was astounded at the sheer size of the place. There were over three counters dedicated to gelato alone -- with more filled with pastries and sweets. It was also very European; I don't know how to explain it, but with the warm earth tones and brass/gold features, it looks how I imagine a classic patisserie would look. My friends and I came for the gelato and it was PACKED. With groups of people crowding the front area enjoying their desserts and lines of people inside ordering, it was almost a frantic dash to get in line. Here's a pro-tip: pay for your gelato first and get your ticket before lining up. We got in line and when we reached the front, had to turn right back and start all over again. Save yourselves the time. Lol. I had the fragola (raspberry) and mango, topped with fresh whipped cream. It was delicious. The most fresh tasting gelato I've had. That mango? Simply superb. Because gelato is thicker than American ice cream, they serve it in smaller portions. I had the smallest size, but it was more than enough for me because of its texture and the way they pack it in. If you're in Rome, definitely hit this place up. read more

The white chocolate flavor was amazing! It had actual pieces of chocolate mixed in. Perfect for a hot summer night. The location was pretty packed but it moved along very quickly. You have to pay first (they do accept credit cards) & then you go with your receipt to select the flavor you want. A small cone was €2.80 & it's 2 HUGE scoops of gelato. I have zero complaints. read more
I think fondly of Rome. I often wish I were there instead of in New York City. Sorry, die-hard NYC fans. And of course being in Rome I just HAD to try Giolitti. It wasn't as expensive as I expected such a touristic place would be; less than 4 Euros for a HUGE gelatto cone- which you must pay before getting your cone at the counter. In retrospect, I guess maybe it was a mistake to ask the guy behind the counter for suggestions. Because he chose for me and it was freaking disgusting. Some berry flavor, another walnut flavor, and a nut flavor. The mix nut flavor was the best but overall they were all disgustingly sweet and it made me want to barf. I licked it a few times. Took a picture. Threw it out. It was that bad. My friend's fragola (I think it was) and another fruit sorbet flavor was great! Perhaps next time (if there is a next time) I will stick to the fruits. read more
Near the Pantheon and feeling like some gelato, Go here and pick up a couple scoops. I'm not even going to waste any superlatives. Don't be a chump and eat that sweet, creamy goodness. Pay the cashier first and bring your ticket to the guy scooping the gelato. I was reminded by the gelato counter that you get more gelato with a cone versus cup. Thank you for that advice my friend, I feel like we were on the same mental wavelength or something. If you can't think of what to get, I did Pistachio and Chocolate. It made me happy. read more
How can you ever give a gelato place 3 stars? If you do, you must have been an abused child. Okay. I did. I decided to come back and revise my ratings. I think people who review Italian establishments on Yelp are just on vacation mode where everything is a 4 or 5 star. It makes choosing restaurants tough since it's never accurate. Supposedly one of the best in Rome. Did I think so? No. The dark chocolate tasted really like mousse. We ordered the cafe, dark chocolate and some Marsala wine. It was gross. We traveled the world to eat at this place and it ended up being a very big disappointment. Remember to pay at the front first and then elbow your way into the crowd and telling them what you want. read more
The best gelato. I got dark chocolate and amoretto in a cone and the gelato was perfectly creamy while the cone tasted freshly made. They do charge to sit inside, so we walked around outside as we ate and enjoyed the beauty of Rome! read more
Perfection! Wow. First off, their system to getting gelato is quite efficient! You are in and out quickly! There are so many flavors to try but my favorite was the hazelnut Extremely creamy and flavorful. You actually get 2 flavors with the small!! So i had chocolate as well as you can see in the picture. The combo was perfection. They charge a bit to sit inside, so we ate it outside as we walked about Rome and it was a perfect treat to end a touristy Rome day. read more

Giolitti deserves every amazing review they have received! The line was fairly long but it was a Sunday afternoon, and they did a wonderful job of managing the people. If you have never been to Italy before, you must pay for your gelato before ordering, but take your time looking at flavors. There are I'd say over fifty flavors and they all look amazing! The workers are not the sweetest, but they definitely are efficient. They serve the gelato in the traditional Roman way with chocolate in the cone and whipped cream on top. I ordered Gnutella, nocciola, and cream. The Gnuttela is actually just Nutella and not gelato, be warned, but it was an amazing addition to the other flavors. The nocciola has good chocolate flavor without overpowering the hazelnut, and the cream is perfectly sweet. There is a decent amount of seating but you have to pay more to sit so I suggest just walking around the sites after getting your gelato. read more

Giolitti is a great place to get gelato! I went here a few times during my time in Rome and it was always fresh and delicious! You can see that Giolitti doesn't use artificial colorings in their gelato due to the natural, almost muted, colors in their gelato. One way to know if a gelateria is good is by looking at the color of the pistachio, if it is a light green/brownish color that means its good, but if it is bright or lime green you can tell that it has been processed and extra colorants have been added. I was never disappointed by Giolitti, the servers were always very kind and I always loved the flavors I tried. They also have many fruit flavors (the photo shows blueberry and coconut) so sometimes we even went here early in the day! read more
Damn! Italy's gelato scene puts America's ice cream to shame. During a week's stay in Italy, I tried almost a dozen different gelato stops and they were each better than the next. The flavors, textures, consistency, and price were all amazing. Of all the places, Giolliti's was by far the best. For roughly $3 you get a huge mound of two flavors topped with dense fluffy whipped cream. I will dream about it. Nothing here comes close. read more

This was the best gelato I had in Rome! You buy a ticket for what size you want first, then go to the counter to order flavors and get it. I had the rice and nocciola once, then the stratiacella and nocciola the second time. I love that they give free whipped cream! Much less busy at night than in the day read more

OMG !!! MUST STOP SPOT IN ROME!! We wanted GREAT gelato spot in Rome not a decent one. Found this one on Yelp & we walked over 20 minutes to get to it it was worth it. When we arrived the line was around the building! We thought there must be another entrance so so went through the other side & went straight to people serving gelatos. BUT we soon realized you must make the purchase first then give the receipt to them. I started walking back outside & then realized if I just stood next to the register, he would eventually serve me & he did. In less then 5 minutes (despite the huge line) I bought 2 small gelatos for $5.30 euros. Next we went to get our gelato, the crowd was crazy!! We ordered & realized a small includes TWO scoops not just one! Yessssss! We ended up coming back 2 more times, it was so worth it!! read more

If you're looking for the best gelato in Rome, this is your place. Serving up gelato since 1900, the establishment definitely had plenty of character. All the employees were very friendly. We went close to closing time and it was still quite busy. I ordered hazelnut and coffee for my two flavors. It was so tasty and the perfect last dessert that we had in Rome. They also serve limoncello which we had as a nightcap. Do yourself a favor and go here whenever you're in Rome! read more
