A friend and I ventured here last night in the rain for an fairly early supper. We had a 'BOGOF' on…read moremain meals voucher and thought that it would be a fairly cheap option. The pub is split into three main areas - the restaurant at the back (or the front depending on how you look at it) which was deserted. There is the main bar that was 50% full, warm and a bit more lively, and then there is the covered outside part that I suspect smokers hang out in. We sat in the bar, quite naughtily taking up a table for 6 with just the two of us - but then the other options were just too small or too 'in the corner' (I pretended I was Goldilocks). We ordered a bottle of red - the Zinfandel Shiraz, (£20) of which the bar tender gave us a pretty generous tasting amount before we committed. He also brought us a lovely big bottle of tap water and glasses with ice and lemon. Having the voucher in our pockets gave us the courage to go for the rather alarmingly priced roasts - we both chose the lamb at £15. It was superb. It was falling off the bone in a delicious gravy with almost perfect veg, I could have happily had the parsnips roasted for 20 minutes longer (they were less 'al dente' and more 'ouch me dente'). I would have loved more roast potatoes and less aubergine (!) but all in all it was really nice and we ate everything on our plates. Our thoughts then turned to pudding.... well, it would be rude not to at least look, right? It was a dark and rainy night, so bread and butter pudding and custard seemed the only sensible choice. Hmmm, it tasted ok, could have been hotter with less icing sugar dumped on the top (at least there was no aubergine this time) but my real issue with it was that it was tiny. Really really small and measly. (See photo). I mean, when I'm paying £5.50 for what is essentially stale bread and sultanas in custard, I expect a decent portion. It must have cost around 8p to make the slice I had - good mark up if you can get it! The coffee was abysmal. In the usual inverse coffee rule, it smelt so wonderful and then tasted slightly better than dish water. The loos were a frightful state, and when I alerted some woman who was walking around not doing very much, she was pretty defensive about it saying that she had not gone in there since that morning. I think that may be the problem, I said. The chap that seemed to be in charge was good and apologised for the small portion and let the sous chef know, but it was impossible to get the attention of anyone else who seemed to be working there. I gave up trying to get anyone to come over to our table and just walked over to wherever they were if I wanted anything. Even with the voucher, (which they didn't take off the first bill we were presented with) it came to £30 per head, which in retrospect was a lot more than I think the meal was worth. The lamb gets it two stars, but everything else looses the other three stars. Shame, as it looks like it has so much potential.

This place is more relaxed, few comfy sofas dotted around and nice small tables for dates. The menu is varied and always cooked well (recommend the steak) pretty reasonably priced, and some dishes come in a small size if you're looking for a light lunch. Stunning beer garden out the back which is easy to miss. Definitely worth enjoying a cold one out in the sunshine on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Beer prices could be a little more competitive, and the lighting could be better, but still a great pub.

It looks rather ordinary from the outside and, admittedly, the interior has most likey remained unchanged since its opening. But this is a datedness to revel in. The all-male, all white haired Irish bar staff wear shirts and ties, and seem to take great pride in the racing and other sporting paraphenalia that adorn the dark timber walls. Needless to say, the Guinness was excellent. The clientele was a mix of locals watching a Chelsea match, swapping anecdotes and exchanging stories of married life over pints of ale. A proper boozer, albeit one which holds a CAMRA award. There is also a beer garden.

After checking out the tinterweb she found this place just 15 mins down the road. Along the main road to Catford it's not the most appealing of locations. Approaching I saw the rugged exterior and blacked out windows I hesitated to enter but once I was inside all my anxieties dissapeared in a poof of age ole Irish tradition. More than just an old boozer, this intimate space is just precious. The walls covered in old signs, racing and ale memorabilia. Authentic by definition the Blythe Hill Tavern is the epitome of cork drinking tradition. The pub itself is split into three sections, which sees you have to walk through the actual bar to get in-between them. It's hard to pick out an English accent in this place, including the staff who are all in shirt and tie. That touch of class runs right through the joint with table service for the regular locals and those ordering a Guinness. There are ample places to hang up your coats, which you do instead of stuffing under your table - because it's that sort of place. This truly is a pub with heart and soul, here for the love and not out to rip off thier punters with extortionate prices

It is such an off the wall stepping back in time sort of place. The walls a covered with shelfs overflowing with old books, quirky art work, old Chesterfield sofas and vintage chairs and tables. It feels a bit like a living room. In the back there is a pool table and board games are also available. A fantastic place to work from or take a book order a lovely glass of red and curl up on the sofa with a book. Arhh bliss. Ps. there is also a large outside area which is always packed in the summer and they often have a DJ on a Friday and Saturday evenings.

Every decade or two, it is painted and a few new light fittings added. The old ones aren't removed, they are just painted over. The regular clientele appear to be composed of men in their 60s that were muggers and are ex-cons, of the Ingerlund set, the women are generally bulging out of their sportswear and displaying altogether far too much corned-beef- like flesh and altogether far too many tattoos. I imagine they have all been coming here for about 40 years and would have mugged you as soon as look at you back then, now they'd still like to mug you but the gout is playing up. I faintly suspect they may feast on the flesh of wayward tourists that have stumbled upon the place by accident and had just that little too much to drink. LOVE they have Lilly's Mango Cider on tap- utterly delicious. I got a small size of the superfood salad and was pleasantly surprised at the decent portion served for £5.50. I also love the hazelnuts with the quinoa- Great flavour combination. Dog-friendly to boot with dog water bowls and biscuits on hand. Plus great Saturday soundtrack of 60s rock and roll and folk classics (Mamas and Papas, etc).

The Sylvan Post is an amazing new pub near Forest Hill station. Its interior is cosy in the back and vibrant and fun in the front room. There a several booths in the main room or some big leather armchairs to relax with a drink. The shelves offer free board games, for you crazy gamers out there. There is a very decent range of wines and beers on offer. This is not a cheap "Old Man Pub". Prices can compare with pubs in central London, but the great atmosphere and the happy bar staff make it worthwhile. They have a great Sunday Roast with a great offer for Vegetarians and also several meat options. I've also seen some serious man-sized BBQ equipment outside on a sunny Saturday afternoon and they always seems to have new and exciting additions to the menu.

Met some friends here for a roast dinner. It was decent fare, and they absolutely do not skimp on the trimmings. After hours this place becomes a chilled out lounge type bar with some sofa areas and some decent tunes. Prices on the drinks are reasonable and they're all very, very well mixed. Props to the bar staff. It might not be the trendiest place on earth but it is a fantastic place to spend an evening with friends. Protip: the 50/50 rye and cognac sazerac is really quite excellent.
