After waiting about 20 minutes on a hot day, I reached the counter to request the flavor of the day - cacao sorbet. I LOVE chocolate sorbet in general, as it tends to be rich and a touch bitter and not too sweet. The cacao sorbet here was more subtle and not as chocolatey-fabulous and others I've had, and I cook/bake with cacao so I know more or less what to expect. Unfortunately I made the mistake of requesting whipped cream on top. The cream was fine, but the ice cream artist applied twice as much Chantilly as there was sorbet, drowning it and throwing the flavor off balance. Oops. I just wanted a touch but was so surprised that I didn't stop her - plus I expected her to stop! I can't believe I'm complaining about too much whipped cream, but my expectations were higher. While many ice cream stands dot the town's tourist sites (this place is right behind the Arles Amphitheatre), it's definitely worthwhile to save yourself for an ice cream at La Maison des Gourmands in particular. The ice cream is handmade and there are dozens of flavors, from the traditional to the slightly unusual. Members of my family had salted caramel, lavender, rum raisin, and I had a blend of rose and lemon, finished off with a candied rose petal... it was sublime, and not just because of the weather outside! The owner's also a charming and friendly older gentleman who seems really knowledgable about the area's Roman history and culture in particular, and he also was keen to chat to me about it as a fellow aficionado, which I really appreciated. I highly recommend stopping by here for a "boule" or two when visiting the Arles Amphitheatre.

From the looks of the restaurant, it has a down-home, country feel. I guess I was anticipating the food to be average. I was completely blown away with the quality and creativity of each item on the menu! I had ordered the veggie slaw as an appetizer, the pork shoulder as my main entree, and the roasted white eggplant for dessert. Everything was phenomenal! We had stayed in France for about two weeks and this restaurant was one of my absolute favorites, even including the fine dining restaurants we had eaten at. The wait staff is extremely friendly, knowledgable and helpful. He was very attentive and went above and beyond to make sure our meal was enjoyable. The entire experience was quite lovely. This place has loads of positive reviews on trip advisor and was recommend to us. Worth a stop if you like out there creative food and flavors. I mean goat cheese ice cream (creme glace eve chèvre) in a cold soup or in a salad!!? I must report it was fabulous. Lavender ice cream is my all time favorite which you can find across Arles. Missing Lavender ice cream right about now!
