This is a great hike close to Santiago. I do recommend coming with a car as it is ideal to start at the base of the mountain. If you don't have access to a car, you can also grab a taxi but it will be expensive since the "camino" is long.
You can either do a day hike or spend the night with a view of the glacier (we did the latter, and if you can handle the cold night, the wide-open starry sky is worth it). It is absolutely beautiful out there and a great, quick getaway from the smog of Santiago.
It takes only about 5 hours to trek up and down while taking your time and having lunch at the glacier. The hardest part for us was once we were done, trying to get our car out of the mud!
Definitely bring tons of water, because there is no water source.
This trek is one of my favorites - the vast mountainscape is breathtaking! Once you get up a bit further, there are large rocks that you can climb as well as a spot to meditate with Indian prayer flags.
Once you get up there you can see the glacier (significantly smaller than what it used to be I am told) but regardless it is beautiful.
Like I said, come with tons of water, layers and good shoes. read more
