My grandson and I just returned from a week-long trip hosted by Taylor Charters. Greg has established a masterful collection of 8 different boats and 5 first-class accommodations in the charming town of Gustavus (it is a hard A, not ahhhhh). Greg owns these boats and spares no expense to ensure that they have reliable propulsion (ours was a North River aluminum boat that had nearly new Dual 250 Yamahas.....) and Captains that had years of experience fishing this area. Note - Boats that are worn out get sold ......he had recently bought two brand new boats! Taylor Charters, as a team, seamlessly integrates the entire experience from the pickup through the fishing (and fish handling) to the delivery to the outgoing flight (which keeps your fish cold, even through overnight layovers if needed). The entire team was friendly and accommodating, even arranging for whale watching and Glacier Bay side trips as desired. We stayed at the Majestic inn - Josh and Christina were excellent hosts. The place was immaculate and since Christina is a trained chef with close connections to locally sourced fish and meats, the eating was as good as any high restaurant in San Francisco. Sautéed scallops as an appetizer? Of course. I had never been to Alaska - going via Taylor Charters was as great an experience as I could have hoped. I will be back as soon as I am able. Natalie's communication was excellent in the weeks leading up to our trip and I found her personable and flexible in plans - something you don't often see with some charters. We were fortunate with incredible weather, a beautiful ride out to Chichagoff Island and a phenomenal day on the river catching salmon in an unbelievably beautiful part of Alaska. Natalie was friendly and patient and when she needed to be - direct and to the point when a bear wandered a bit close to our group. Great equipment including boots, waders, bear spray and quality rods & tackle. A great day was had by all as Natalie directed us to a river teeming with salmon. It's amazing to see nature & wildlife this way including eagles, bears, sea anemones and the crazy tides in this part of the world. The captain in conjunction with their two other boats in the area did a great job keeping us on the fish. We had a blast and caught 15 halibut between the 3 of us and 31 total on the boat, the biggest being a 32" 15-16lb halibut that we sent home for a few nice dinners. The trip was great and would highly recommend these guys if you are in the area. Just be aware, the fish shipping company (an outside company) is quite expensive to ship fish back home, but they were extremely convenient to use and did provide great customer service.

In the early hours, we passed by Point Gustavus where the local Park Rangers boarded Queen…read moreElizabeth, then the ship proceeded through the fjords and inside the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. We made a scenic stop at the Margerie Glacier, then on to Glacier Bay. Margerie Glacier is a 21-mile long glacier situated along 12,000+ foot tall Mount Root. It is one of the park's most stable glaciers, neither receding nor advancing over the last several years. Lamplugh Glacier was so different with its deep blue ice contrasting sharply with the dark rock of the surrounding cliffs. We were told that the color comes from ice so densely being compressed that it absorbs all wavelengths of light except blue. The park's glaciers are spread across 3.3 million acres, and many are visible along the shores of the bay itself. Margerie Glacier and Grand Pacific Glacier, both located at the head of Tarr Inlet, are among the most notable, often showcasing dramatic calving events. There's nothing quite like the thunderous roar of a calving tidewater glacier to remind you of the mightiness of nature. Unfortunately, we did not get to witness this on our trip. We spent an entire day at the glaciers. We were in awe of the towering mountains, icebergs, and majestic glaciers stretching as far as the eye could see. When God created this part of the country, he made it magnificent. It was so thrilling to experience this from the deck of the Queen Elizabeth. To be able to see the icebergs floating in the water, the seals on the icebergs, and mountain goats on the mountains. We were also struck by the beautiful shade of blue of the water. What also was exciting was to have the Park Rangers giving us a live commentary on what we were seeing. They provided us with insights into the park's ecology and history, enhancing the overall experience.

I went on a Norwegian Cruise and Glacier Bay was the most phenomenal part of my trip!…read more EXPERIENCE: Whether you go on an expedition through this park or a cruise, this is a must when you're in Alaska! Thank goodness for a balcony on my cruise, because that allowed me to sit back, sip a cup of hot tea, and enjoy the cinematic like experience passing before my eyes. I cruised through here at the very end of April so the ice was broken enough to allow the ship through. There were playful otters, an abundance of glaciers, and snow blanketed across the mountains. I could not have asked for more from this experience. OVERALL: Glacier Bay is an absolute must see for all! It is a truly powerful experience! I took so many photos, but could only upload a few.

The scenery and wildlife were breathtaking and both Blain & Mo were so knowledgeable about all the birds, animals & plants we encountered along the way. The boat was comfy, the food was delicious - each day was a new adventure. Evening cocktail hour, dinner & games many nights rounded out every perfect day. (Kids not following guides directions, being impatient, and just whiny) Guides Wyatt and Alex tried to bring some humor to the zipline process. Their zip lines are not as intense as others I have done. It's nice they do the braking for you. Fun thing to do, going zipping through the trees!
