I often find that staying in a B&B can be somewhat uncomfortable. Having to watch you don't make…read moretoo much noise when your coming and going, being told when you have to get out your bed for breakfast, not wanting to come in late incase you wake up the old lady that runs the place... All of these factors, amongst others, make lodging in a B&B a little bit awkward.
This time I opted for something different, renting a cottage out for a week. And as soon as I walked in the front door I felt comfortable.
There is a large living room, a twin room and a double room. All clean but none of them are exactly stylishly decorated. Everything kind of reminded me a caravan. Lots of wood and old fashioned furniture. Its kind of like your grannies house, there is even a stairlift!! which unfortunately was disconnected so the temporary tennants wouldn't mess around on it. Which I would have.
My favourite room was kitchen / dining room. They same that the kitchen is the heart of the home and it certainly feels like the case here. The central heating system is ran from an oil burning AGA, so the kitchen was the warmest room in the house. I can see why the residents in Glasgow lived in their kitchens in days gone by.
Also on offer in the kitchen is the entertainment. This comes in the form of a large window looking into the back garden. Sounds pretty standard. However! the residents of the back garden are none other than... red squirrels! Practically ran out of town by their grey cousins, its rare to see a lovely little red (think of the last time you saw a squirrel in the park... bet it was grey). There was a bird feeder which we filled with nuts to tempt our furry friends into performing acrobatic tricks. Simple pleasures!
There is no WI-FI, the TV is digital but has maybe 10 of the channels and the mobile signal is a bit dodgey. What you do have is an unobstructed view of Goat Fell, a secluded location and a comfortable base for exploring.
So if you want somewhere to escape to, away from the tenement flats and traffic wardens, and your not looking for a plush, over priced hotel room, this may be the place for you.
