The features a great range of new contemporary and classic vinyl records, along with more obscure band t-shirts, CDs by local and unsigned artists and a selection of small and independent publications covering a variety of topics. The shop is easy to browse and tidy, and the front window is filled with your obligatory live music and album posters. There's a chilled kind of vibe, and the proprietors are happy to let you be or have a chat about music or the store if you're into the scene. They also sell stuff online, and run competitions through the store's blog. All in all, a very funky establishment.

The other, found only a few stores closer to Alexandra Pde and across the street, is Polyester Records. Here the focus is on the audio products, and whole the 'weird' may not be in the title it is still here to a lesser extent. With a focus on vinyl they have an extensive Indie selection as well as an up to date back catalog of Australian Independent releases. The poster in the window is of a lesser known Australian band, that's how focused they are on this. The limited printed wares you do find have the same music focus, be it a band tee or lyric book or autobiography. The signage outside is nice and surreal, the quality and price of the wares and your time will be well worth spent and lost here.

I stepped in the store today and was loved the ambience of the place, Pinball machine to the right, Lit-Up signs and funky Jazz music playing. I flipped through the CD's and found some really cool 'Soul' albums that your everyday department store wouldn't have. I'm happy to say that this is some where where you won't find the Top 40 usually plastered all over 'Sanity' and what not. I also have a love for Polyester because that's where i buy all my music tickets! They have a white-board out the fornt with what events they are selling and how much the tickets cost. Super handy and i make sure to check it out every time i walk past.

I walk in and I don't know where to start. I could spend hours browsing through the offerings, and I often do! The cool thing about Dixon's, is you can not only buy all you old faves, but you can also sell your records there. On more than one occasion I have been tempted to take down mums Bony M collection because I'm sick of hearing it played everytime I go over! But that's a whole other story.. Dixon's also have a good range of DVD's, CD's and Bu Ray DVD's.

The notion of buying and selling second hand goods only came to me after being in this store. The quality of wares is good - the Blackburn one having a stronger selection of Metal and Hard Rock than most of the others - and as it turns out they had to move due to the quantity of stock. Rest assured it only ended up being a few shops up the street, taking over an old garage and converting it into a huge warehouse space. There is even enough room to house a piano in the foyer area, though I'm yet to see any play it. The guys working there have been there since my early days in the store, and are keen music antiquity men and fonts of music knowledge. They can tell you who was having it off with who's girlfriend in the band while making a certain record. Their historical music gossip will make you blush.

Knowing the ins dn outs of the one found in Blackburn, I was surprised to find something working as well as it does closer to the city. Here you can buy and sell second hand wares in the form of CDs, Vinyl, and DVDs. What's even better here is the selection of DVDs also found amongst the music madness. I didn't make the most of this during my childhood so am lapping them up at a rate of knots. And just like Empire Records, there seems to be real characters here, both shopping and found behind the counter. Those who work here are passionate about music like you wouldn't believe, on the odd chance they are actually part of the Melbourne music scene, playing shows further down Brunswick street. Some of them work in Blackburn store as well, and will have a mental blank about stock as their mind is in the wrong store. Where is my mind, indeed.

At only $269 it was reasonably priced too. They also sell music books, pick holders, coloured microphones, distortion pedals, amp stands, bonga racks, and cheapies for kids like whistles and Agogo Blocks. In terms of instruments they also have saxophones, pianos, keyboards, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, accordions, harmonicas, drums and violins. Any muso will absolutely be in heaven in this store. I promise.
