Art is amazing, The uffizi has an impeccable collection of it and isn't so large that you are exhausted afterwards.

This is an excellent museum if you're wanting to get a feel for the wide variety of Italian artwork throughout history. This place is so well organized (originally commissioned by Cosimo Medici as offices--hence "uffizi"--for the Florentine magistrates), we were able to go through the majority of it in an hour! That said, we came in the evening before it closed, so consequently there were very few people, giving us reign to run up and down the stairs and take some pretty spectacular photos in the hallways and the restored Niobe room, my favorite of them all. Of course we got a glimpse of Botticelli's "Birth of Venus", which is spectacular, but there are a handful of his other works that are just as impressive, such as "La Primavera". There is also a sprinkling of Michelangelo, da Vinci, and even Rembrandt. Titian's beautiful "Venus of Urbino" is displayed here as well. There's normally quite a wait in peak season, particularly July (which I heard can be up to 5 hours!). We gained entrance using our Firenzecard, which gives you priority museum access with no need to make reservations for 72 hours starting from your first entrance. This is a MUST if you're planning on coming during peak times! read more

The Uffizi gallery has the greatest overall collection of Italian painters anywhere. This is as good as it gets! You must carve out at least 3 hours, and that will not not be enough. We became overwhelmed early in the visit, as we had not eaten first. Thank goodness for lunch on the roof deck which was a totally different adventure. Botticelli's the Birth of Venus (known as the purest expression of Renaissance beauty) and Spring (It is springtime in a citrus grove) can be experienced only at the Uffizi. My favorite by far is Botticelli's Slandor, or Calamity of Appelles. It spells the end of the Florentine Rennaissance - and so emotionally represented in each detail and figure. Michelangelo's only completed easel painting, the Holy Family is also here. He is a true Florentine, and his impact is so present. Da Vinci, Donatello, ancient Roman statues they cannot attribute to an artist, but have survived thousands of years. Truly a place that makes you feel other- worldly. Don't dare miss it!! read more

I went here first in 2000, and again during my last visit. This museum is really amazing and getting the Firenze card definitely got us in quick! It still is as overwhelming as ever, and so we did the best we could. Got a book after to help us remember what we saw. Overwhelming though. We went through first through the hall, then back again through the rooms. We ended up at the beginning and really wanted to exit but boy were we scoffed!!! So we walked all the way around again to the end. Only it wasn't the end!!! They have you through a really really really LONG exit process. We had no choice but to the through the Leonardo exhibit, which was nice but we were kind of done by that point. You had to go through every room to get to where you could finally exit into the bookstore! All of it was amazing just overwhelming. This museum is definitely worth the visit though! read more

Tip: Before you go check out which rooms you want to visit as this is a very, very long hike if you go from room to room, since there are like 70 rooms with tons of art of all kinds plus art on the ceilings, statues in the hallways...just alot to see. I went in March, so no waiting whatsoever in line. Next time I am eating at the restaurant there as I read the food is good and the prices are very reasonable. I think that would be a fun dining experience to have eaten at the Uffizi. When you are ready to go and see all the Exit signs, you will probably walk out like I and other Americans did saying that was the longest exit walk you ever experienced. Some of, if not, the best art we have seen on our trip! The sculptures are amazing, as well as the art from the Italian Renaissance. Make sure to reserve a ticket beforehand for a specified time so you don't have to wait in the long line. To get through the whole gallery takes about 3 hours or so, depending on how fast you go. My visit to the Uffizi Gallery was a life altering experience due to my discovery of the Botticelli Room. I was not a fan before but after viewing his work I've converted in the biggest way. Everybody, at some point has seen Sandro Botticelli's most famous painting, The Birth of Venus (a young woman rises nude from the sea, on a half shell). I've studied his art work in college Art History Class and seen it in text books and the first impression is... It's nothing special. In fact all his paintings look flat and uninteresting. Boring is the word that comes to mind, however this couldn't be further from the truth. Until you've stood right in front of a Botticelli painting you can't begin to appreciate his talent. In all of his paintings there is quality that is unexplainable, they have a certain kind of presents, his paintings takes on a life of their own which a photograph can't even come close to capturing. No other artist I've seen can project these qualities, not even Da Vinci nor Michelangelo. There's something very special about a Botticelli painting. I was so moved that I spent three consecutive days in that room, several hours at a time each day. On the third day the guards became worried and assigned a guard to watch me. I didn't care if a guard was following me all over the place because I knew this was the only time I would be in Florence and I probably wouldn't get back there again. And no I wasn't paranoid, it was made very apparent to me, the guard was there for me and only me. I never wanted to leave that room. Hey! Uffizi Museum Guards don't worry about me, I am not crazy and I have papers to prove it. I hope to return one day. Ciao! PS. Location: Right next to the Palazzo Medici. The place: When I arrived, I didn't realize just how big this museum was until I went inside and started walking. WOW. Every time I thought I was done, I would step into a whole new room of beautiful masterpieces. The art: This museum is impressive and a must if you visit Florence; you will see various genres of work that include sculptures, paintings, frescoes - all created by masters. I was seriously blown away by what I saw. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that photos are allowed as long as you don't use a flash. Price point: I think this ran me 21 Euro, and it was well worth it. If you pre-purchased your ticket, then you need to pick these up in the building across from the Uffizi - I believe they call that 'Door 3' but the signs aren't always up. Once you have your ticket, you want to go through the first door to your left (at the Uffizi). The door to your right will be for people who want to buy tickets. read more

I was pumped so much Renaissance art that I came out of the Uffizi feeling like I'll never be truly impressed with another art museum ever again. You could easily spend an entire day in this museum because there's so much to see; the only limiting factor is that the food is wayyyy too overpriced. The museum is very well organized. All the rooms branched off of a main corridor so it's impossible to get lost. There are also signs for especially important artists like Da Vinci and Botticelli (oh yeah, Uffizi has the largest Botticelli collection in the world!). If you do manage to get lost, there are museum employees/volunteers in almost every room who can point you in the right direction. Definitely get to the museum EARLY. I arrived 40 minutes after the opening time and the line was already ridiculous. And also get the Firenze card if you want to get inside the museum within reasonable time. read more

Even if you are not a big art lover, the Galleria degli Uffizi is definitely a museum in Italy that should not be missed. Major works from many of most renown names of the renaissance are on display. To actually see Botticelli's Birth of Venus was quite impressive. I couldn't believe the immense size of the painting. In same cases, just the frames of the paintings were displayed in where more interesting than the artwork itself. The U-shape of the Uffizi is also well planned. It's very easy to get in and out of the rooms without feeling lost. While you cannot take pictures inside, the views from the windows and cafe that look out onto the city of Florence are nearly as breathtaking as the art. Some Advice: If you don't have advanced tickets or a Florenzi Pass, don't go in the morning. The lines are much shorter in the afternoon. We visited around 15:30 and it only took a few minutes to get in. I've heard it could be an hour or more earlier in the day. read more

The ticketing was an absolute clusterf*ck even though we had purchased tickets months in advance. You'll see big line 1 (for groups and people with reservations and ticket in hand), big line 2 (for people with no reservations), and, across the plaza, a small office for line 3 (to pick up reserved tickets). So if you purchased tickets in advance, have some of your party stand in line 1, have someone go across the plaza to get the actual tickets from line 3, then by the time the line 3 person is done, the line 1 peeps will be near the front and you'll be in. I highly recommend a guidebook like Rick Steves', which had a guided tour for this museum and gives you a lot of background information for each painting, plus lots of history. That way you're not just blindly walking around lost, or worse, popping in to see The Birth of Venus and then "well, looks like that's it! must be nothing more to see!". We spent about 2.5 hours here and had a great visit. read more

What can you say about this museum that hasn't already been said? Splendid, spectacular, awe inspiring??? The collection is Renaissance painting and sculpture here is so sublime you might weep. Here are the Botticellis you have only seen before in art books, the Caravaggios you have seen before in print...a walk through the galleries and corridors of what was once home to the Medici chancellery is to give thanks that the Medici family had the sense to recognize outstanding talent and the generosity to make it the first public museum in Italy. You can stroll through the galleries for hours and be deluged with beauty your head hurts. The exterior is also a visual treat, with the statues of famous Renaissance men of the times...Galileo, Giotto. etc. A few tips..buy your tickets in advance. The extra 4 euros is worth it. You will still have to wait on line but it will be shorter. Wear sturdy shoes, make sure you have had good meal before you go. This is also post 9/11. Leave your backpacks and shopping bags at the hotel or you will have to check them and I think there is a fee. Don't try to see everything...Your brains and eyeballs will explode. Please respect the no flash signs. These amazing works of art can't be reproduced--The Venus De Milo is under glass but already seems more faded. If there is a particular painting you MUST see, try to find out what gallery it is in before you go. That way, you won't be disappointed(though how you can be with all the hundreds of other gorgeous paintings that will wow you is beyond me). read more

A great museum but so crowded and badly organised. The place is packed and when we visited was under renovation so a large majority of paintings were either moved or not on display. No information as to where the changes were made and where to find what were some of the most important paintings in the gallery. In fact with so many areas closed, we didn't actually spend that long, those areas that were open were so busy, especially with tour groups. Hopefully I'll visit Florence again when not so busy, and with the gallery fully open. read more

The Uffizi is a major destination for art lovers all over the world for a very good reason. Major works by all the big names are here - Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Leonardo, Titian, Veronese, Rubens, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, etc ... Very beautiful place to be, even if you don't know much about art. You go from room to room staring at these amazing paintings that legendary artists were once engaged in. You can't help but get sucked in and read the information panels and the detail in the paintings. A lot of depictions of Madonna and child. Staring at the detail in the paintings can keep you there for hours. I went in December so there was barely a line but the place was busy. Can't imagine what it's like in the summer. Even my husband who doesn't like museums found this place pretty cool. We spent about 2 hours here. read more

I am not sure how you could give this museum less than 5 stars. It is packed? yes. It is touristy? of course. Does it have priceless art pieces you can only find here as a snapshot of human history? Absolutely. My fiancé and I went to Rome in spring which is a great time to go so Rome. We were lucky this museum wasn't completely packed as it obviously gets in the summer months. However, it was still pretty busy to the point where we had to wait to go into some of the rooms. I love the layout. It is so easy to navigate because everyone is pretty much going in one direction as you go into each room and see the artwork inside. If you are running short on time, they have hallways to help bypass some of the crowds and you can skip rooms where you don't have to see anything. Also, Gli Uffizi houses one of the only paintings created by Michelangelo who was known for sculpting rather than painting (think of The David). While this piece of art is not as famous as many of his sculptures, it is a one of a kind piece that should not be missed. read more

Ok..so first let's start with the ticket office. There are some people working in there that really need to be fired. We asked a lady in the ticket office a question about where we should get our tickets (we had an online reservation, but needed to get the actual ticket). She literally started yelling at us AT THE TOP OF HER LUNGS!!! It was crazy...wish I had caught her name. Anyways, onto the museum itself. Great art, but this museum is a hot damned mess to get in to. It was 8:15am on a Tuesday morning and I bought the Firenzecard pass along with a friend to get in to the museum. The entrance process was super disorganized, staff gave attitude and I was extremely pissed off by time we made it in to the place. Renaissance art central... and with the crowds to prove it! My wife and I are seasoned world travelers and were genuinely looking forward to exploring this iconic gallery. We are also artists, so we have studied many of the famous Renaissance works on display at the Uffizi. However, the experience of visiting this crowded and commercialized gallery was a bit disheartening. First, purchase your expensive tickets online in advance. If you wait until the day of your visit (even starting very early in the morning), you'll be standing in long lines and will be lucky to get in before lunch. Ignore the many ticket scalpers and pseudo tour guides. Also, the very latest Rick Steves travel guide is essential information for any popular event in Italy -- perhaps the best trip insurance you can buy. We arrived early before the gallery opened with our tickets in hand... and still did not get in until over an hour wait in line. Even visiting off-season and during the week, we were amazed at the massive throngs of tourists. My wife and I were indeed awed by the art we were actually able to see, but anything notable was swamped by masses of visitors from all over the world. We are definitely not "Bucket List" folks, so we were rather disappointed with our overall experience at this noted gallery. If you enjoy the insanity of Disneyland holiday crowds and inflated prices, you'll be right at home at the Uffizi. Recommended maybe... but with serious reservations. read more

The Uffizi is one of the world's greatest museums, but you'll want to be prepared or risk waiting hours in line. 1. Buy your tickets online first. Months in advance always a good idea. 2. Day of, you will be able to retrieve from a special line and avoid the crazy hoards. Once in, it is chalk full of paintings from floor to ceiling. I found the audio guide to be long winded and not very informative. The two must see paintings are The Birth of Venus and Primavera by Botticelli. Otherwise, enjoy the plethoras of angels, Christ childs and Madonnas. All lovely, but a bit much after a while. read more

As one of the top museums in the world, the Uffizi *almost* manages to make you take for granted certain parts of its massive sculpture and painting collection by sheer overload in quantity of some of the world's most important pieces of artwork. A 2-3 hour tour stroll through the museum should have you covered. Having traveled to the museum in April/May, the museum was packed every day by 9:30am. It's easy, however, to forego these lines by simply scheduling an "appointment" and buying your tickets in advance at the ticket counter just up the road. This can (and should) be done for each of the exhibits in Florence, if you're a planner like me. The Uffizi is one of the most important museums in the Western world, so the ease with which one can walk to, purchase tickets for, and enter and enjoy the museum makes it a must-see for casual travelers and art aficionados alike. read more

It is one of the best galleries in the world and offers secret treasures in every room/corridor. We pre-booked our tickets online for total 10.5 Euros per person. It was fast and simple to get inside the museum. We first had to go to Entrance 3 to collect our tickets, then it's across the street to Entrance 2 where we walked right on in. We ended up getting the audio guide since there was no little pamphlet on what the "must sees" were. I was hoping for that pamphlet like what you get at the Prado. The audio guides didn't really point out what the "must sees" were explicitly. Luckily we had internet access on our phones and I was able to pull up the "must see" on the Uffizi's website. If you are a big art lover, maybe you'll like this place. For me it was just crowded, full of art that all looked the same (tons of religious art) and by artists I'd never heard of. The biggest issue I had was that the info plaques next to the paintings and statues didn't really explain what the painting or statue was about (for the most part). It usually just explained where it was previously held and how the museum came to acquire the piece. I'd rather know about the artist and what the meaning is behind the art. The highlight was when a young girl threw up in the middle of the floor. It took staff about 10 minutes to simply out a chair over it. Before then,no one stood there to warn people so visitors simply just kept walking through it. The staff were ultra rude and just plain grumpy as well. Don't get me wrong, some pieces and the building itself were impressive but ass someone not familiar with art history, it didn't add any value to my life. I much preferred the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam because the art was beautiful- I didn't need to appreciate history to enjoy it. Also, we didn't pre-book. There were people on site selling jump the line tickets so we just bought those for 2 bucks more and waited about 15 minutes total to get in. read more

Keep in mind that while I like art, I'm definitely not someone who could spend all day in an art museum. I paid the extra 4 Euros to reserve on the official state museum website. Well worth the money especially during high season. I'm sorry. If you don't reserve ahead of time or pay the $$$ for a tour, you are an idiot to waste hours of your time standing in line. Vacation time IMO is precious and not worth saving 4 Euros over. Anywayyyyyy I reserved a ticket for the first morning entrance from 8:15-8:30 on a Wednesday. I woke up early and showed up around 8 with maybe 3 other people there. If you have a reserved ticket you will line up at door 3 which is opposite the side with door 1 and door 2. If you go there before or after hours, you will not see the doors labeled. They do not keep signs up so you may be waiting at the wrong door if you show up before 8:15!!! The side with door 1 and 2 is the one where they have that sign that says "3 hour wait". Even though I paid the extra money, for a Wednesday at the end of March, the wait to get an unreserved ticket wasn't too bad. I left the museum maybe at 10 and while there was a wait, it probably wasn't more than an hour, maybe 45 minutes. When I showed up at 8, I think there were just slightly more people in that line then there were in the reserved ticket line. I've heard if you go off season there is no need to reserve a ticket but I still recommend spending the extra 4 Euros just in case. The cool thing about reserving is that I also reserved a ticket to Academia and the cashier gave me tickets to both so I wouldn't have to go through another line at Academia. On to the art. When I went to view the Primavera and Venus (the most well known artwork at the Uffizi) there was only 1 other person in that room!!! I'm not kidding!! At the time when I went they had to move the pieces outside rooms 10-14 (the rooms they normally are at I think). I don't think most people knew that which is why they were all mine!!!! They do let you take pictures as long as your flash is not on. Pretty much strolled around almost all the rooms. Lots of art depicting Jesus and Jesus lookalikes. If you like seeing Jesus with blood all over himself, you will love the Uffizi! The courtyard is beautiful and took some really cool pictures there. You also get great views of Florence including the Arno from inside the museum. Bathrooms were also fairly clean except they don't have the paper cover things (but I don't think those exist in Italy). Honestly if I could do it again (I've been here 2x in 15 years), I probably would pay the extra money to be in a group for a tour just so I have someone to ask questions to regarding some art pieces I had questions about. I can' t add much to the previous reviewer, but felt I had to point out to the artists amongst us; The Lippi's are wonderful, the Fra Angelico's are superb, The Simone Martini collection is to die for and.the one that surprised me the most, the Botticelli room is as priceless as all the art history books say. No reproduction comes even near to seeing Primavera close to - I hadn't realised from the illustrations, slides and film that the main figures are more than life size and so incredibly well painted they seem about to come down and talk to you. Then you look around and see the Birth of Venus which is also huge and commanding. Add to this the many unbelievably wonderful statues and you have, as has just been said, a gallery which you must see before you die. By the way, one day isn't enough. read more

We bought tickets in advance...but there was a line to "pick them up"...then there was a line to get in...the worst part? The guard at the head of the line was smoking...WAIT...that was NOT the worst part! There was a rude (beyond belief) man swinging his arms "directing" us from one room to another...more like herding... One female staff stands out in the worst manner...my mom-in-law needed to sit down...apparently, she sat on "her" bench...she reproached our little girl who was sharing the bench with grandma (she was swinging her feet too much?!)...thank goodness our feisty girl understood Italian and responded in English!!! All while we were not there...I would have responded too... There was ONE young lady who noticed how my mom-in-law had a tough time walking up the stairs and approached us to let us know that we can use the elevators. Great customer service... Sigh...yes, there is great art where you work, but you do not own them...you work there...please do not be mistaken!! The art is always great there...but one knows to expect that, right? read more

All the guidebooks are insistent on pre-booking tickets for this impressive gallery. Not fancying that, I got up early and only had to queue for 30 minutes or so (apparently it can be HOURS, with the possibility of not getting in at all, if you leave it until later in the day). Many of the best pieces here are from lesser-known artists you probably haven't heard of, and certainly have not seen much of, at least outside of Italy. Seeing a pretty successful cubist painting from the 1500-1600s was really impressive, and their medieval collection of religious art is to die for. Some of the lesser-known Botticelli paintings are truly exquisite, and remind me more of 19th century English romanticism than anything renaissance. The works by Bronzino and Durer also have a distinct power than many of the "pretty pictures" here lack. It's definitely worth a visit, but there are some serious caveats, which I can only touch on here. Unfortunately the museum is a bureaucratic tourist trap that herds you like cattle. The Vatican is a Byzantine labyrinth as well, but you are not forbidden to backtrack or explore at your own pace, plan and leisure. Not so at the Uffizi, where you must do as directed, even if you are not inconveniencing others. You must obey the poorly thought out rules at the expense of your own experience. The Uffizi is staffed by cheerless and meddlesome old women who exist to feed off the past glories of others through their plush little security guard jobs. It seems as if they do their best to make your visit feel as if you are renewing your license at the DMV, rather than visiting a place of art and beauty. Of course, people living off the achievements of others are rarely the nicest to begin with, and are often the most arrogant and protectionist of all people, even though they hardly deserve to have such an attitude. Also, several museum rooms are off limits and you can just peer inside, the Tribune room, among others. They do this in museums throughout Italy, and it is infuriating. I cannot enjoy a piece of art if I can barely see it, and it is a tease to display it at all in these cases. There is an entire room of miniatures that one can only look into, from quite a distance away, which is completely idiotic. Miniatures are meant to be examined closely, from inches away, and most museums display these exquisite portraits in glass cases to great effect. Not so at the Uffizi, where you can glimpse them from ten feet away! Completely useless and utterly frustrating. There is a lovely rooftop patio, but there is no place to sit unless you agree to pay 5€ for a cappuccino served by rude waiters with the table service scam. You are also not allow to go anywhere near the edge of the balcony, even though there is a generous and very secure barrier around the entirety. This means that taking pictures and seeing much of a view is quite limited by the rather high and opaque stone wall the surrounds the patio. On the bright side, the new construction that holds the staircase and bathrooms is spacious and modern and the bathrooms are clean, upscale and comfortable. Plus they're actually free, at least for now. :-p Also, more than half the museum was closed for renovations, and this was not mentioned before purchasing the ticket, either in Italian or English. This does not offend me very much, because the ticket price is quite reasonable, but it is somewhat unethical. So basically the Uffizi, like many artistic and historical monuments in Italy, is a microcosm of the country itself. A bunch of people living off of the achievements of truly great people who came before them, while milking the present for all it is worth and doing very little to preserve it for future generations. Of course, one could say the same of many countries, including the United States, but generally most countries are better at caring for their cultural heritage, and making it accessible for all to enjoy. Part of me loves Italy dearly, and part of me thinks it's a giant tourist trap. :-p Ditto for this flawed yet worthwhile museum. read more

We got tickets through a third party, but we had a problem with them and ended up waiting in the ticket line. Waited around 30-40 minutes and paid £20 per adult. We chose to look around alone without a guide which was great, as we are not art buffs and wanted most to see the Birth of Venus and other well known works. I recommend securing tickets early and going during the week. Beautiful museum! read more

This gallery is amazing, the problem of it is the time that you waste waiting for entrance in it. I advise to go early into the queue for entrance. Amazing art work from most of the many artists like Vecchio, Boticelli and many others. Firenze is also a very beautifull city. read more

it's really important to take time to see even a part, of this exhibition. even for art muffle this is a real opportunity to learn more about the art world. So who should make in florence holidays bring at least 2-3 days. the price is around the downtown is very high, therefore it is recommended to bring at least Viaticum. read more
