Angela is an exceptional midwife. I unequivocally recommend Angela and her midwives if you're considering home birth. I will try to condense the incredibly beautiful and empowering experience I had into a few paragraphs. As a first-time 39 year old mom, I wanted to try a home birth. I wanted the opportunity to feel empowered by birth rather than afraid of it, and to have agency in decisions at every step of the process. However, I was fearful of making a poor choice that could affect me or our baby. I knew only one other person who had birthed at home. Our insurance also covered a hospital birth but not a home birth. I interviewed several highly-regarded midwives in the Portland area, equipped with a robust list of dozens of questions about risk, transfer rates and 'what ifs.' When my partner and I left Angela's office, we just knew she was the one for us. Her deep experience, calming but decisive nature and pure kindness was apparent. Throughout the pregnancy, I felt exceedingly well cared for. I kept showing up with long lists of questions to every visit. I was greeted with hugs (from Angela and her student midwives), and cared for with the perfect blend of science and trust in the amazing process that is creating a human in your body. At every point, Angela was proactive in my care so that I could have the home birth that I wanted. As opposed to my 'pushing 40 peers' who were seen in the hospital, not once did I feel shamed nor concerned about my age. We discussed risks and monitored thoroughly, but never did I feel that being an older mom was problematic or concerning. Fast forward about eight months--my labor started spontaneously at 40wks, 5 days. I labored for 34 hrs total and--although it was the most intense thing I've ever done--I did not feel that I was suffering. I did not feel afraid. I was in such capable hands that I just embraced the primal nature of the experience and stayed fully in each moment--knowing that they were keeping us safe and that we had a hospital transfer plan if needed. I had three remarkable things about my birth worth mentioning here: 1) I had a cervical lip that kept me from fully dilating. Because of her skill, Angela simply manually pulled the lip down while I pushed the baby's head past it. It did not hurt. I'm not sure what would have happened in a hospital setting, but I loved how simple and effective that intervention was. My water didn't want to break (strong sac!) so finally she recommended manually piercing it (also did not hurt). Again, what was remarkable about this intervention is that it was simple, effective, and allowed me to continue laboring at home safely. Lastly (and rather remarkably) my perineum did not tear. My baby was 8 pounds and 3 oz (with a big head!) I know this is uncommon, but I also attribute this to Angela's calm expertise. She allowed my body to push when it wanted to (because baby was safe and tolerating labor well), rather than coaching me to push when my body wasn't ready. We are deeply grateful to had been able to bring our baby into the world in such a calm and loving way, and have her caught by such loving and competent hands. read more

My eyes well with tears of love and joy as I write these words, and words will forever fall short of explaining the magic that was my home birth experience with Glow Midwifery. Every step of our journey with Glow was extraordinary. Angela and her team provided genuine love and care in every moment they spent with me and my family. from the start to the end, I never questioned the quality of the care I received with Glow. After having two previous hospital births, going into my third pregnancy I knew I wanted a home birth. When I first met Angela I knew right away that I wanted to come into her care. My journey took a couple of detours due to financial constraints. I ended up going to two different birth centers, neither of them providing the quality of care I longed for. After a sudden change of insurance I was left with choosing to pay out of pocket costs for birthing at a hospital, a birth center, or going back to my original home birth plan. I am extremely glad that we chose to circle back to Glow. Angela welcomed us with open arms and took us into her loving care. During the last few weeks of my pregnancy, Angela became concerned about my baby's heart rate which was just below the normal range. I went in for testing to ensure all was ok for the home birth experience. At the time I was full of fear about having to have a hospital birth, but I knew that Angela had the best interest of me and my baby and I found comfort in knowing this. Before I go any further, PLEASE NOTE; I do not and did not expect to be treated free of charge nor a reduced charge. Also, the clinic is aesthetically pleasing (although very cold), and the student midwife was an absolute angel who I wish I could have had as my primary care-giver while attending the clinic. Angela was incredibly condescending and lacking in any bedside manner whatsoever. I had only 3 visits with her. Numerous times she commented on how young I was to be having children, even going as far as to say to herself "my daughter is 20 now..." in reference to when I gave birth to my first kiddo. As well, she truly spent an entire hour long session making me go in to extreme detail revolving any depressive episode, past eating disorders (to which she then commented on how "small" of a person I already am...big yikes), and childhood trauma I experienced. We arent talking about the typical rundown to make sure theres not conflicting symptoms of these experiences that could impact birth or postpartum. I'm very used to that cycle when finding a new care provider of any sort. This was much more than that, digging for SPECIFIC details on things that she clearly had no training nor manners in which to address or respond to (again, the student midwife was a dream, but this isnt the student's practice. It's Angela's.) I was visibly uncomfortable the entire time and asking if she really needed to those details, which were more intensive than any therapy session I've ever had, and the responses were uneducated and extremely insensitive ~ she simply had no place to be asking these things if she did not have training to properly address them or respond to them. Her responses very easily could have sent someone less-healed in to an absolute spiral. Her website claims that children and siblings are welcome to appointments, however the one time I brought my two year old to an appointment she called her a "distraction", put no effort whatsoever to baby-safe the clinic room prior to our arrival (and she had over 24 hours notice that the baby was coming with) and truly did not seem to have any idea how to actually handle a two year old. My child is very curious but she isnt ill-behaved, and thats not a biased opinion. She is a very average two year old. Angela expected her to sit quietly on her bottom next to me on the couch for an entire hour. Again, the student midwife was amazing as far as helping entertain and interact with my daughter. Angela acted like she had never engaged with a toddler in her life. When my life circumstances changed and I could no longer afford the set payment schedule, I sat down and told her that the person helping me make payments was no longer able to do so, and that I needed to figure out another payment schedule...I kid you not, this woman said "thats unfortunate but if you do not pay me I *flops hands in air* cant help you". I said "no, I understand that you dont work for free and dont expect that, but I can't make $800 per visit" and she responded exactly as she had prior. "we can work with you, but if you dont pay then we cant help you". I reiterated, I did not expect her to work for free or for a discounted price, but simply that $800 a visit was not do-able anymore (and hadn't been, since I never thought it was $800 per visit on the plan I selected). She responded yet the same. It was very cold, very blunt, and very unconcerned with anything other than being paid. Which I totally understand it's her job, her career, she has bills, but there are more professional and empathetic ways to get that across other than "well sorry but if you dont pay, I cant do anything for you." After all this (and more that I cant disclose for safety reasons) I decided to cancel care with her and look elsewhere. I explained that the ill-mannered and forced discussion of trauma details had left a bad taste in my mouth, to which she responded "I said we didnt have to talk about it again, but maybe you just heard what you wanted to hear." as well as saying she "hopes you find people who truly and genuinely love and care for you..." wtf? due to the pandemic, I found out I wouldnt be able to be seen at my new provider until I was 31 weeks along. Mind you I'm currently 25 weeks...so I'm due for some testing. I asked about this and they said I could have my previous midwife send them an order for the testing. I'm hypoglycemic and am at a higher risk for this condition, yet Angela simply didn't care about anything other than another $800 to order an essential lab. So, if you're married or partnered, over the age of 25, and extremely privileged in your income to the point of $300 increases not phasing you (during a pandemic), as well as leading an extremely neurotypical life, then by all means, go ahead and attend her care because I'm sure you'll have a great experience. read more

In the middle of the night, five days after giving birth to my baby girl with the irreplaceable assistance of the midwives from Glow, I was struck by an awful headache. Sharp and unlike any pain I'd had before, my suddendly nervous husband suggested we call our midwife Angela. I was reluctant to bother her... she was by my side for an exhausting, slow to progress 3-day labor and birth. It was 2 am. But I recalled that the previous day, at my day 4 postpartum home visit with Glow Midwives (yes, they come to you for several visits after you have the baby), the midwives noted my blood pressure was higher than normal. So I called Angela. We needed to check my blood pressure immediately to rule out anything dangerous, she said. Another Glow midwife, who lives near us, came to our house to check my bp. It was 180/110. Lucy, a compassionate and smart-as-a-whip midwife, helped my husband, newborn and I pack up and to the ER we went. As the sun came up, I was admitted to the hospital for postpartum pre-eclampsia -- a rare but dangerous disease that can cause seizures and stroke. The nurse in charge of my care said she was so relieved I sought treatment when I did. If I'd have stayed at home, I definitely would've seized. Some people worry doing a home birth, under the care of midwives is risky or less safe than being in a hospital. I would argue the opposite. In a traditional hospital setting, after mom gives birth, she doesn't see a doc again until a 6-week appointment. Had that been my case I might not have caught the high blood pressure symptom and not sought medical attention in time. The Glow midwives are phenomenal care providers. Angela knows pregnancy, labor and birth SO WELL; nothing surprises her. And her calm and sweet demeanor make her easy to connect with and a joy to be around. I am so thankful to have the care I received under amazing midwives from Glow while I was pregnant with our second son. My first sons birth was traumatic for me. I feel like I received unnecessary interventions and pressure to have a baby on the hospitals schedule. I also hemorrhaged, and feel the hospital did not perform the due diligence in my scenario because, what I believe, is short staff and nurse staff turnover throughout the night/day of my first son's birth. I felt so safe and cared for throughout the whole term of my second pregnancy. The knowledge and professionalism of my Glow midwives is something I and my husband really appreciated. My second son was born at home, naturally, no interventions, within ~2 hours of our midwives' arrival. They monitored the baby and I every 10 minutes, were supplied with all necessary equipment you would find in an ambulance, we had a plan weeks ahead of time for reasons to transport to hospital (i.e. fever, baby in distress, Mother's intuition, etc.). It's hard to put into words how eternally grateful I am for my Midwife, Angela, and her Glow Midwifery team. My pregnancy journey and birth story will forever be a flourishing garden of memories because of these lovely ladies. GLOW stands for "Great love opens the way," and all I can say is "YES!!!" Angela and her assistants radiate such a true and genuine love for the women and babies that they care for. I have been a labor and delivery nurse for the last 7 years and have witnessed countless hospital births, and my first baby was born in the hospital with an epidural. But with my second baby, I really desired to have an unmedicated birth in the intimate setting of my home. So I did some research and was so fortunate to find such a wonderful, knowledgeable, and experienced home birth midwife. After meeting Angela for the first time and talking for a while, I felt such an assurance and confidence that I would be in great hands under her care. I looked forward to my prenatal appointments with great eagerness. Each and every visit began with warm hugs from Angela and her midwife student, Charlotte. The model of care was holistic in every sense of the word...I was taught to trust the pregnancy and labor process like never before. I was thoroughly educated on health, fitness, and nutrition to support myself and my baby. Angela is very conservative in her care and showed a tremendous amount of attentiveness and caution...knowing when to step in if things were deviating from the norm, but also knowing when to watch and trust the natural process. By the end of my pregnancy, I felt like Angela and Charlotte were like family to me. They had instilled so much trust and confidence in the months leading up to the birth. Angela and her team could not have prepared me more for labor. When the day finally arrived (almost a week and a half past my due date), it was FAST AND FURIOUS! I had about a two hour labor and I have never experienced anything so intense. I have never felt more primal, more empowered, or more supported than during this birth! My situation is a little unique as well because I have no family in Oregon, and I was broken with the idea of my husband not being at the birth of his baby, but Janne did the unthinkable - without any hesitation she offered to watch my two children so my husband could be there. It's something that I will never ever be able to repay her for. She gave my family the most beautiful gift. I will never forget her. My husband and I are beyond grateful to have partnered with Angela and her team at Glow Midwifery! We were actually late arrivals to Glow, deciding to transition from a planned hospital birth to a home birth at around 36 weeks. As I myself was born at home (in the Netherlands), my husband and I had previously discussed the possibility of a home birth but didn't initially end up choosing that route. However, unforeseen circumstances (e.g. finding out that we would not be allowed to have our doula present at the birth, rumors of partners not being allowed to attend births, etc.) brought us back to that conversation and we agreed that we shared the desire to welcome our first child into the world within the comfort of our very own home. My prenatal yoga instructor/doula (who now also happens to be a student midwife working with Angela) referred us to Glow. As soon as we met Angela and her student midwife Charlotte (albeit, virtually at first) we knew we had made the right decision. We interviewed several midwives in Portland before deciding to have a second home birth with our second child. Angela is extremely intelligent, knowledgeable, and competent in her practice. Pregnant on my second child I had been in the Hospital Midwife system but I felt just like a number. It was a really emotional pregnancy for me and I was down a lot. I was looking for a different option and visited several Birthing Centers but when I spoke to Angela on the phone everything changed. The care I got from Angela, Rosemary, Kristina & Sarah was above and beyond. This system is so supportive and nurturing. The visits were a time for me and I always left feeling a hundred times better. Angela's energy is very grounding and calming. They are all incredible listeners. There was a lot of laughter always and I miss the visits so much. On the Birth day they made me feel very safe. They know what they are doing and they worked together. They are such hard workers and take care of everything. The also made my husband feel really supported and needed. Angela is extremely informative and makes sure you understand every step of the way. She makes you feel very calm and trusting, you just know she is in control and has your best interests all the time. I swear sometimes when I feel stressed I just think of her and I feel calmer! She creates an environment that is a complete holistic support system from early pregnancy to all the postpartum visits. On that note, the postpartum care was just lovely. I looked forward so much to their visits, they were supportive of me and encouraging. The care went on for so long. On my previous birth I left the Hospital 2 days later and went back to my Midwife for a short 6 week follow up. This time round was just joyous and a complete contrast. We came across Glow from Val, who was our doula at our first child's birth. I instantly felt a connection with all of the ladies at Glow. The team at Glow is wonderful, they were always very attentive and nurturing with me and my baby, they respected any requests I suggested and were very open minded to any ideas I had. They are all very knowledgeable in their practices and I trusted them wholly when it came to my care. When baby time came they entered the house so calmly and sweet, I never felt like they were being intrusive or pushy, just very calm and patient, waiting for my body to do what was needed, we were even laughing as I ate while pushing! There are truly no words to describe how incredible Angela and her team are. Through our time together, they have become an extension of our family and I am eternally grateful for her care. From our very first (virtual) meeting, I felt an intense connection and felt immediately cared for. Angela has a warmth about her that can not be matched. Having previously had an unmedicated birth with a hospital based midwife group, I felt prepared for birthing my second child but craved a more intimate setting than a bustling hospital room. Every prenatal appointment in her beautiful home based office was quiet, calm, encouraging and incredibly special. My labor was fast and uneventful and our team arrived just in time to catch our beautiful baby boy, thank goodness, but after a series of unexpected events, we needed to transfer our baby to the hospital. Angela made swift and confident decisions to keep us safe and I have never felt more comforted or loved than in those moments. Angela and my husband accompanied our baby to the hospital because I was not ready to leave with them. My husband commented that in my absence, Angela cared for our son as if he was her own. She is truly an angel. We required extensive follow up postpartum and Angela continued to be patient, loving and supportive through it all. Having known Angela before becoming pregnant I already knew what an amazingly kind and loving soul she has. But working with someone as a care provider is much different than knowing them as a colleague or friend. You learn things about one another you never knew and you form a very special bond - no one else will ever know this relationship or experience. My husband and I interviewed several midwives in our search and agreed on all counts that Angela was the one! And we could not have been more pleased. Angela has loads of experience, incredible intuition, endless patience, respect, and understanding, and a very calming energy. When I was in labor I didn't want anyone near me. I yelled at my husband, my mother... even my cat! But when Angela arrived at my home all I wanted was her by my side. I believe that is a testament to her spirit and her craft. Angela was our midwife twice now and I would 100% recommend her to anyone considering a home birth. I had a traumatic hospital birth experience with my first child, which motivated me to look into home birth during my second pregnancy. The prenatal, birth, and postpartum care you receive at Glow Midwifery is both comforting and reassuring. Angela is very professional and knowledgeable in her skills and I've always felt totally comfortable and well-cared for during both my second and third pregnancies, births, and after. Our second son was born via water birth at home under the care of Angela and her team. It was a wonderful experience for me that brought healing to some of the trauma I experienced from my first birth in the hospital. Our third son was planned to be born at home as well, however, during routine monitoring of the baby's heart rate while I was in active labor showed that our baby's heart rate was decelerating. Angela made the call to transport to the hospital, and she supported me in the ambulance and during the delivery at the hospital. Our baby had the cord tightly wrapped around his neck, which was causing the heart rate decelerations. I'm thankful for Angela's judgement and experience, and she made a decision that was in the best interest of myself and our baby. I know she truly cares about her clients and I will miss going to our appointments. Even though we ended up having our baby in the hospital, the Glow team comes to your home for the first 3 postpartum visits and well baby checkups. It's so nice to be in the comfort of your home while recovering from birth and not having to get in the car for the first 2 weeks. I started my journey with glow midwifery at around 20 weeks, and am so glad for my decision. I had a c section with my first baby and didn't want to have to do that again so I started searching for a different way, as the c section rate in many hospitals is too high for second births! Angela and Charlotte were outstanding in every prenatal and postnatal visit, and the birth itself was remarkable and life-changing! They were so informative and compassionate along every step of the way, always available for questions and extra care I needed. My husband and I visited many hospitals and birth centers when we found out that I was pregnant, but when we met Angela at Glow Midwifery, we knew immediately that our search for the perfect birth team was over. I chose Glow Midwifery for my second birth, a VBAC, after starting the pregnancy with an OB. I wasn't totally sure I wanted to do a homebirth VBAC, but after weighing my options and meeting with Angela, I decided to go with my gut and try for the homebirth VBAC. Angela is so warm and caring, she starts and ends each appointment with a hug. She is very available via phone, text, email. More importantly, she is incredibly experienced and knowledgable. She presents all sides when offering various tests and procedures. My birth ended up being very quick, 2 1/2 hours active labor, and her whole team was so supportive and calm under pressure. They felt like old friends attending my birth. She helped my husband "catch" the baby and I was able to hold her on my chest minutes after the birth (something I missed out on with my first birth).
