The place is very laid back environment. We went for lunch at noon, walked in and not greeted right away. A few minutes later, an employee got up from bar and told us to sit anywhere. Lots of employees were standing around I guess because it wasn't busy. Our waiter didn't mention any specials. We heard specials from the waitress at the next table. The waiter did ask us multiple times if we needed anything. Employees were all sitting and standing at table next to us when we were leaving. A fun spot with great food and a lively atmosphere. Brendan was a great waiter and was on top of refills and ensuring we were happy. Two of us enjoyed quesadillas which were tasty! My daughter loved the Hawaiian chicken sandwich and her friend enjoyed the Alfredo pasta. The banana pudding was a perfect ending for the meal. Family of 3 came in around 7:30pm. It was busy but we were able to get seated fairly quickly. Order our drinks which came out promptly then ordered our food. We were told that it would be a little bit longer because of how busy it was, which wasn't an issue. Around 8:40 my family gets their food but I do not. Our kinder waiter said that someone told them it got taken out already but "clearly it didn't or you'd have your food" she was kind about it. 20 minutes later I got my shrimp po boy. The food wasn't bad, but they didn't not put on any mayo as advertised on the menu so the sandwich was VERY dry. Fries were okay, albeit a little salty for me but other people like salty fries so they get a pass. Had a late lunch here on Saint Simon's Island. Found Gnat's Landing via the yelp app. The place was a beach like bar with an outdoor picnic table sitting area, but located in this tucked away little shopping / restaurant venue off a main drag. I will say the bartender was nice and efficient, I unfortunately did not get his name. I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak, and with the ability to see into the kitchen ... I immediately looked up their health rating. I wouldn't put the place down as fine dining or on any level clean. It's passable for a dive bar. The Cheesesteak was delicious... actually one of the better ones I've had (even in Philly). So when in The Golden Isles area check out this eclectic place, plus they have a bunch of TV's that probably make it friendly for some top sports ... Awesome spot for some bar food and some beers. The Cesar salad was surprisingly fantastic for a bar salad. The dressing tasted homemade and the fried pickle chips were fantastic. I stopped in for dinner on Sunday and I was seated in the bar, I wasn't thrilled because it was loud with a game on, and I was seated in between 2 tables of people drinking and being loud as well. It seemed like they didn't want to use the restaurant area to dirty it, but I should have said something. I ordered the grilled shrimp, there were about 10 of them which is a lot. They were cooked well, and they came with a side of Asian style slaw with ramen noodles. It was ok, but I will get something else if I go back there. Located in the middle of a themed shopping community is this little gem of a bar. It has a very friendly staff and a nice warm cozy feel about it. They play a nice mixture of classic rock which goes well with the vibe and the food. I was really looking for something that was a southern thing and lucky for me the special of the day was the fried pork belly sliders. Man was this tasty! The pork was crispy on the outside with a light dusting of flour while the pork itself was very tender and flavorful. It was served on potato rolls with a dry slaw and accompanied with crispy fries. Now personally I think that they should of had the slaw in a light vinegar base to add a little bit of moisture and flavor to compliment the pork. At the table was a bottle of Chipotle sauce which went well with the pork but personally I like a more creamy accompaniment with the flavor and texture of pork belly. The portions seemed a bit small for the price, but, considering a I wanted local instead of a chain place, I'm certainly willing to pay a little more for authentic, local made food. But $14 for two sliders and a handful of fries seems a bit much. There wasn't even a pickle! But, it was tasty and I will be sure to come back the next time I'm in the area. read more

The pier is where the tourists go when they visit St Simon's Island (and with good reason, it's a wonderful spot). Redfern Village is where the locals gravitate, and when they are there, their spot of choice is Gnat's Landing. A bit off the beaten path and away from the coastline, Gnats sits in the midst of the Village, easy to stop into as you wander the shops and haunts. Depending on the day you may need to wait a bit for a table on the covered porch (lined with shutters for those pesky hurricanes, otherwise open air year round) because once you're seated it's easy to linger. A golf tournament will likely be on the big screen TVs as golf is the unofficial sport of choice, we discovered, at Gnats. We were invited there by Captain Billy for a beer after he took us out on his shark fishing boat early father's day morning (shameless plug for the wonderful Capt. here: http://www.billybeecharters.com/). Thanks Billy for showing us the "other" side of the island. Everybody seemed to know everybody else, at least by sight, and we were welcomed with a local craft beer and a huge basket of fried pickle chips upon arrival. Score one for me, fried pickle chips are my bar food GO to! We listened to the live band out back and chummed up to the local golf aficianados (several mid-level professional players live in the area so you never know who you'll run into) while the kids played outside on the painted bulldog statues (we were in GA, afterall) before dinner. A great time had by all, very relaxed and welcoming. I would not be writing a complete review if I did not mention the missing star - although I was so charmed by Gnats that it hardly matters, I'd go back anytime. The food/drink selection was hit or miss. The front porch spikes lemonades were weak (prompting a quick switch back to beer) and the burger, by all reports, wasn't great.
