Cool place, my roommate and I were road trippin through Nevada and this was a spot on my list of places to see. We rolled through thinking it was a ghost town in the normal sense of the word but it is actually inhabited. Sparsely. We found an old soon in town that is super cool and there is memorabilia all over the walls. If you stop into the saloon, bring cash! Excellent bar. read more

Absolutely terrible. Very unwelcoming, rude people. The town is more of a ghost trailer park than anything. Not worth a trip.

An almost ghost town, with a varying population between 6-12 people, accessible from three different ways, including two roads from Route 266, and the other approaching the town via a dirt road from the south via Hard Luck Castle, as Jim mentioned in his review. Route 774 is a nicely paved road, and is probably the easiest bet, although Wiley Road, which connects with Route 266 farther west, is a well-maintained dirt road. You can stay here in one of the refurbished cabins, which are very comfortable. There are different cabins, but the Hornsilver Cabin has A/C, no running water, and a little porta-potty...but you can use the facilities in the main house 24 hours a day. You can also have home-cooked meals with the family, all of which are hearty and delicious. The desserts are also amazing. The post office and some of the other buildings are well-preserved, and everywhere in town, there are remnants of the past - stagecoach wheels, rusted vintage vehicles, etc. And not far away from the town are the old mines, tunnels, and headframes. There is also a saloon, which was formerly the telephone office building, where you can have a cold beer and cool off after visiting the mines, walking around town, or off-roading. The buildings look really cool, sort of how you might expect the remnants of an old mining town from over a hundred years ago to appear, but it's kept in good shape by Herb and the people who live there. It's pretty great for photography, and in fact, that's largely what drew me to Gold Point. It's really nice and quiet, peaceful and relaxing. A visit to Hard Luck Castle is well worth the time, just a ten mile drive away on dirt roads. I did it with a 2WD, but 4WD is recommended. Herb, Sandy, and everyone else is super friendly, and I highly recommend a visit. You can step back into history, and at the same time, help preserve it....and have a lot of fun! read more

A living ghost town! If you're expecting white linen tablecloth and linen napkins....you took a wrong turn. Gold Point (not in Goldfield, Nev. but located about a half hour south of Goldfield) is as close to the real deal, a time warp back in time as you'll ever see. Herb & Sandy as well as Walt make for a lasting memory and they will share stories of years gone by that adds to the entertainment. If you happen to go on one of the busy weekends in April or May then there's live entertainment but town can get a little crowded from what I've heard. This is my second time of staying in one of their cabins....I'm sure I'll be back again. read more

So it's not a true ghost town, but instead a living ghost town. It looks like a ghost town but there's a few people actually still living there, and that's what makes it so cool. Two guys own about half the town. Herb and Walt showed us a great time. We drove past the Hard Luck Mine Castle and arrived from the dirt road to the south. Our cabin, really a 100+ year old shack, wasn't too bad. There's no running water but you're close to Herb's house and their door is always open. The heat was already on when we showed up. We cleaned up a little and then sat down in Herb's dinning room for a nice steak dinner with "all the trimmings." It really was nice to have a home cooked meal after being on the road for a few days. A couple of other locals joined us at the dinner table and the conversation was good, everything from sewer lines to gold mining techniques to breaking bottles over your head. We wrapped up the meal with some of Herb's fabulous home made ice cream, YUM! After dinner Walt took us over to the saloon and then on a night time tour of the local hills in a his side by side. It was pretty cold out but still awesome to be banging around in the hills at night time. In the morning we got a brief tour of the town from Herb. I picked up a few geocaches in town and we continued on our way. The rates are a little high for what you get but the proceeds are generally spent maintaining the town so it's not all bad. Dinner and our cabin for the night ran us $135. This was a truly memorable stay, something you'll never forget! Gold point hosts a few events every year that sound awesome. Very cool historical place about halfway between Beatty and Tonopah. Kind of hard to find. Lots of cool things to walk around and look at, including old cars and mining equipment. I went camping here with a group last year, and at night you can hear coyotes in the distance and since it's out in the middle of the Nevada desert, the sky is amazing. read more
