Added 18% tip for our party of 3
Tommy S.

The food here was alright. I like their pork and shrimp dumplings. The buns were OK on average. We didn't like their custard egg yolks. What I love here was their Polo custard buns. All other things were just OK Service was a bit handoff but not rude. They dropped off the food on the table; we ate. The waitstaff avoided interacting with us unless it was necessary But what I didn't expect is that they charged us, a party of 3, 18%tip on the receipt (not service charge). On the other hand, The credit card slip had the tip space blank. The waitress didn't say anything either. I didn't notice the 18% tip so I added another 18% on top. This would be the last time I visit Golden Dim Sum again. The food was just average but the automatic gratuity without informing customers was a bit much.

We haven't been in this place in a while, The dim sum taste is still the same as i remember it. The bbq pork bun, shiu mai, steam shrimp dumpling, stuffed shrimp eggplant and the chicken feet is still as good as i remember it. The only disappointment for me is the pan fried turnip cake, it doesn't have much flavor and it wasn't fried well. The wonton egg noodle soup is good ass well. The service crew is good abd attentive. Welllbworthbthe visit.

Golden Dim Sum is emblematic of Houston's dim sum scene as a whole: dated but relevant, small but mighty, limited yet abundant, and surprisingly average. Despite it the ratings falling in the latter and the recent shattering of their second Bellaire Blvd location, Golden has enjoyed a local following for years and I hope it continues for the foreseeable future. The outside doesn't look like much and gives no real indication how big the place really is. There are a number of large tables just perfect for big groups in a dimly lit setting, complete with a bustling wait staff and a very extensive picture menu. The latter is practically a visual glossary of dim sum and something I've not seen anywhere else in the city. Their format is like most places nowadays, which is a la carte. Worst case scenario for dim sum novices is to just point at the menu and let the magic happen. There weren't a ton of standouts, but I did appreciate how extensive their options are in addition to their portions. Personally, I was pleased with some of the rice rolls for the texture and thought some of the baos were hearty. Not much was memorable, save for the experience of eating there to begin with. It's a hunch, but I'm willing to bet a majority of the staff is part of the overseas Chinese-Vietnamese community. Much of the time I hear them interacting with everyone in multiple languages, all while running around and making things happen. If anything, this might be the most Houston thing of all.

$70 for 10 large dishes.

We came off a cruise ship and were looking for Dim Sum. We were coming through Houston at 9 am on a Saturday and found Golden Dim Sum on Bellaire opening at 9! Lucky us we were the first customers there but then it quickly filled up. We ordered all of our favorites and they were delivered hot and fresh. Everything was really delicious and service was honestly the best we've ever had for dim sum. We always preferred cart service but this place is menu only with photos for each dish and we enjoyed having all of our dishes come out as they were ready. We took home a lot of leftovers and they gave us ice tea to go. I don't understand the lower reviews. This place is great. Not pretentious just great dim sum.

Golden Dim Sum is one of my family's go-to spots for dim sum in Bellaire, and we came to celebrate Father's Day, so you can imagine how hectic it was... I wouldn't say the service is terrible, but they can be somewhat hasty. However, if you consider that the restaurant sees hordes of customers coming in and out on weekends, I'd be on edge as well. Though we did have to flag down a worker today to remind them of the chicken feet we ordered. Also, for my party of 3, there was an automatic 18% gratuity, which is ridiculous since we served ourselves when packing leftovers. Anyway, the food is generally tasty, but as previous reviews have suggested, the quality is inconsistent across the board. Ordering some tea on the side helps cut through the oiliness. - Crispy Flounder (4/5): very crispy. Very fatty. Very delicious. But it's been about 10 hours, and I'm still burping from the oiliness, so not exactly the healthiest. I ordered it on a whim because I saw another table get it, and it gives me childhood memories. There are no significant complaints, but I wish it were a fillet because it was quite bony. - Eggplant with Garlic Sauce (3.75/5): Delicious, but gosh, was it oily. My parents enjoyed it a lot, though! I do prefer how other establishments would prepare it spicier, though. - Singapore Flat Rice Noodles (5/5): Hands down one of my favorite things to order at any dim sum/Chinese restaurant. I love the curry and charred taste. Such a staple, and I have to hold myself back from hogging the noodles to myself. - BBQ Pork Buns and Custard Buns (2.5/5): My mom pointed out how they tasted like something that was initially frozen and reheated to serve. It altered my opinion, so I will not be ordering again. - Other honorable dim sum mentions: Shrimp Rice Rolls, Crab Puffs, and Red Bean Sesame Balls (5/5) - My mom didn't like the chicken feet, but I thought it was fine. While it's not the best dim sum restaurant in Bellaire, I consider it a no-frills Chinatown classic and recommend anyone to try this place at least once!

Paid a visit after a volunteer event with a group of almost 20 patrons. It was noon-1pm on a Saturday and we were seated quickly with many other tables still open. We split our group among 2 big tables that could seat 10 people although one of our tables was almost right up against the wall with very little room for anyone who sat on that side. Food was pretty decent in flavor. I would say the classic dim sum items were at the level I would expect from a restaurant but nothing mind blowing. The soup dumpling was a lackluster as it stuck to the bottom and there were no soup spoons to contain any of the soup. Chicken feet were decent - flavorful but not melt in your mouth. Egg tart was very hot and fresh, but lacked in flavor in comparison to a bakery like 85 Degree. Chow fun and salt and pepper pork were highlights. Service was a hit or miss. One table was able to order quickly, but the waitresses were no where near us when the second table was ready to order. Took several minutes to flag a worker down, but later when we wanted to add a dish, the server was quick to put it in. The restaurant is definitely older and the decor, tables, and chairs show the age. All in all, to be able to accommodate our large group and feed us in a timely manner, the experience was not bad at all.

We loved everything we ordered! Short turn around time, fast, fresh and delicious. Check out photos below!

My family and I have always had a wonderful experience here. Staff is friendly and very attentive. We did go during the week so there were plenty of tables but normally they do get very busy and parking can be hectic. Food came out fresh and hot, very delicious and always on point. Our go to spot in bellaire when we're in the area. They do have a second location near the Hmart as well. Come show your support if you're in the area.

Was able to be seated immediately before Noon on a Saturday! Their menu comes with pictures for all items so don't worry if you forgot the name of a dish. The dim sum we ordered was overall OK -- some items were really good (like their Shumai) and others had been made earlier so weren't the freshest. Their Beef Chow Fun was 20/10!!

Gloria T.

The egg tart was good but that was it. The meat in the siu mai had a strange smell, to the point that we didn't eat it. The bbq pork pastries were soft and not crispy as it should be. The sticky rice was mushy. The meat in the xiao long bao was mushy and didn't taste good. The shrimp dumpling tasted decent but the wrap came off easily. The fried turnip cake was soft, mushy and broke apart when we try to pick it up to eat. The place is medium size with old furnishing. Parking available in the plaza

Shrimp steamed dumplings are my favorite. I can eat alone or with family. Service is always good and food is amazing.

I had zero expectations when I entered Golden Dim Sum. After shopping at Linda's Tropical Fruits, I felt hungry because it was my lunchtime. I was gonna get chow fun as my lunch. But since it's a dim sum restaurant, I ordered few items to validate my presence. The service was actually better most other reviewers. But the food quality was subpar. Sorry, you don't put parsley in cilantro dish. I know it's not their fault but blame it on the grocery store. Boohoo. It's kitchen's failure not to catch it. Shanghai dumplings were not supposed fall apart as I picked up with my chopsticks. There was no soup spoon for me to catch the soup. So, the little bit of soup went all over the place. Custard egg yolk bun were flat and not fresh. They seem to be sitting in either warmer or refrigerator until customers order. Malay Sponge Cake was somewhat delightful. Not as sweet as most other dim sum restaurants. But it was ok freshness. Overall, I wouldn't want to feature Golden Dim Sum in my Chinatown Crawl events. The cleanliness and ambiance were below my standards.

Ask the Community - Golden Dim Sum Restaurant

Stopped by today (8/4/25) during regular hours. The Open sign was on, but the shutters were all down. For lease signs were up on one section of the building that looks like part of the restaurant but not by the main door. Anyone know the status?

It's been said "Temporary Closed" for a long time, is it really closed? I miss them.

Golden Dim Sum had two locations. The first one, just out past the Sam Houston beltway, and the one in Chinatown. The second one took over the spot of the old Sarah Place. But, I believe only the original location is open now.

Is golden dim sum closed currently?

its open.

The price point at Fung's may be more expensive than other Chinese restaurants, but this is definitely an elevated dining experience with consistently high quality food and presentation!

That said, they're still busy as hell, so expect a wait- especially during weekend lunch hours. I went on a Saturday for a late lunch, and the place was packed. Surprisingly, we didn't have to wait very long. Our waitress was hyper as hell, and I loved it. She was goofy, sweet, and had no problem answering all of our questions. To start, I ordered the fried shrimp balls and shrimp shu mai. The shu mai was good... exactly what I expected. Nothing out of the ordinary, but solid. The fried shrimp balls were also good and pretty much what I was expecting. Honestly, it's probably the closest I can get to Trini-Chinese dim sum in Houston lol. I just need more hot sauce! For my entrée, I got the fried lobster with salt and pepper seasoning- duh, that's what I grew up eating. Back in the day, it was one lobster for $20! These days it's about $33 a plate, which is still pretty reasonable considering it's lobster and the portion is hefty. I ate the whole plate myself and honestly could've gone for more. If you've been coming here for years, not much has changed. The food is still good, and the kitchen menu portions are generous.

We came with a group of 18 people, and the bill ended up being around $972. Unfortunately, most of the dishes were more impressive visually than flavor-wise. The colorful green fried rice looked unique, but honestly just tasted like regular fried rice. The green beans were overcooked, so they lost the crunch and sweetness that usually make that dish enjoyable. The green curry was extremely spicy, but outside of the heat, it wasn't very memorable. The shaking beef dish looked amazing presentation-wise, but the sauce was too sweet for a savory dish, and the crispy rice pairing just didn't work well for me. I initially thought the duck dish was Peking duck, but it was actually the Jasmine Tea Smoked Duck. Even so, everyone at my table agreed we still preferred the traditional Peking duck style. The duck itself lacked flavor for us, and the skin was soft instead of having the crisp texture we were hoping for. The only dishes I genuinely enjoyed were the soup dumplings, cucumber salad, and fried dumplings. Most of the other dishes at the table were barely touched. If you're looking for colorful, aesthetically pleasing food and great presentation, you may enjoy this place. But if flavor is your main priority, this spot just wasn't for me personally.

Sadly, it seems like those days are long gone as the latter is on a downhill slope. Has ownership changed? (#1) I'm not sure, but so much else has. There's no tea offered, but bottled water. Service and the kitchen staff is a mess where it's most evident during their busiest hours. At one point, Cantonese was spoken but it also seems that's no longer the case. Previously the food was passable, but now it's near abysmal. Siu mai was hearty, but fairly bland. The same applies to their spare ribs (排骨), beef balls (牛肉球), and steamed glutinous rice in leaf (糯米雞). I felt their custard buns (奶黃包), fried stuffed crab claw (釀蟹鉗), fried glutinous dumpling (鹹水角) and the turnip cake (蘿蔔糕) were dried out. While the shrimp dumplings (蝦餃) and rice rolls (腸粉) mostly passed the test, it needed lots of soy sauce + condiments to be worth it. The only winner was their beef chow fun (乾炒牛河), where the beef and ho fun noodles were tender, while also being adequately greasy. The bonus bits of fried egg within were a nice surprise. While the prices range from $3.75-$9.70, a majority of it will average out to be $5-6 a dish. This isn't a terrible deal per se, especially during these times. However, it is a big price to pay for service issues and sub-par quality dim sum. While I'm hopeful that they'll rebound and I hope the Joy returns, but I don't think I will. __________ (#1) FZ / FJ peeps, where ya at?
