Having a hard time trying to decide if this restaurant was "just fine" or "I didn't like it." I liked the beef flare noodles the most which I feel like isn't even a dim sum dish. Overall, I felt like the steamed food was over steamed or something. Ordered: - Ha Cao: every time I tried to remove it from the tray thing the insides would break free from the outside. - Chicken Feet: I strongly dislike how they cut their chicken feet into two halves. I really don't get the point because there's truly no benefit. It is an unnecessary step on the kitchen end. On the food consumer end, I felt like I was getting bone fragments from the central foot making it hard to eat and less enjoyable. In addition, I felt like the skin also didn't come off as easily as other chicken feet I've had. Golden Dim Sum has an old-school vibe like it has been around for decades so I thought they'd have good dim sum. But I was in for a rude awakening. The restaurant is very outdated. While I don't mind outdated establishments because some of the best foods I've had are at hole-in-the-wall restaurants, Golden Dim Sum is far from that list. I wasn't a fan of anything we ordered. The only two dishes we managed to finish was the Steamed Shrimp Rice Roll and the Steamed Shrimp and Bean Leaves Dumpling. Our least favorite dish is the Salt and Pepper Capelin Fish. My mom and I took one bite and that was it. We couldn't even take a second bite. It was extremely fishy and salty and had an odd texture to it. The Pan Fried Taro Cake was very oily and had an odor to it. My mom usually enjoys the Steamed Pork Ribs with Black Bean Sauce dish but here, she only ate a few pieces and didn't even bother taking the rest home. I'm sure that in its heyday, the restaurant was bustling with customers and served delectable dishes. The food here was alright. I like their pork and shrimp dumplings. The buns were OK on average. We didn't like their custard egg yolks. What I love here was their Polo custard buns. All other things were just OK Service was a bit handoff but not rude. They dropped off the food on the table; we ate. The waitstaff avoided interacting with us unless it was necessary But what I didn't expect is that they charged us, a party of 3, 18%tip on the receipt (not service charge). On the other hand, The credit card slip had the tip space blank. The waitress didn't say anything either. I didn't notice the 18% tip so I added another 18% on top. Golden Dim Sum is emblematic of Houston's dim sum scene as a whole: dated but relevant, small but mighty, limited yet abundant, and surprisingly average. Despite it the ratings falling in the latter and the recent shattering of their second Bellaire Blvd location, Golden has enjoyed a local following for years and I hope it continues for the foreseeable future. The outside doesn't look like much and gives no real indication how big the place really is. There are a number of large tables just perfect for big groups in a dimly lit setting, complete with a bustling wait staff and a very extensive picture menu. The latter is practically a visual glossary of dim sum and something I've not seen anywhere else in the city. Their format is like most places nowadays, which is a la carte. Worst case scenario for dim sum novices is to just point at the menu and let the magic happen. There weren't a ton of standouts, but I did appreciate how extensive their options are in addition to their portions. Personally, I was pleased with some of the rice rolls for the texture and thought some of the baos were hearty. Not much was memorable, save for the experience of eating there to begin with. It's a hunch, but I'm willing to bet a majority of the staff is part of the overseas Chinese-Vietnamese community. But it's been about 10 hours, and I'm still burping from the oiliness, so not exactly the healthiest. I ordered it on a whim because I saw another table get it, and it gives me childhood memories. Paid a visit after a volunteer event with a group of almost 20 patrons. It was noon-1pm on a Saturday and we were seated quickly with many other tables still open. We split our group among 2 big tables that could seat 10 people although one of our tables was almost right up against the wall with very little room for anyone who sat on that side. Food was pretty decent in flavor. I would say the classic dim sum items were at the level I would expect from a restaurant but nothing mind blowing. The soup dumpling was a lackluster as it stuck to the bottom and there were no soup spoons to contain any of the soup. Chicken feet were decent - flavorful but not melt in your mouth. Egg tart was very hot and fresh, but lacked in flavor in comparison to a bakery like 85 Degree. Chow fun and salt and pepper pork were highlights. Service was a hit or miss. One table was able to order quickly, but the waitresses were no where near us when the second table was ready to order. Took several minutes to flag a worker down, but later when we wanted to add a dish, the server was quick to put it in. The restaurant is definitely older and the decor, tables, and chairs show the age. We came off a cruise ship and were looking for Dim Sum. We were coming through Houston at 9 am on a Saturday and found Golden Dim Sum on Bellaire opening at 9! Lucky us we were the first customers there but then it quickly filled up. We ordered all of our favorites and they were delivered hot and fresh. Everything was really delicious and service was honestly the best we've ever had for dim sum. We always preferred cart service but this place is menu only with photos for each dish and we enjoyed having all of our dishes come out as they were ready. We took home a lot of leftovers and they gave us ice tea to go. I don't understand the lower reviews. This place is great. Not pretentious just great dim sum. read more

Tucked away in a pocket on west Bellaire Blvd, this restaurant doesn't have a grand appearance like Ocean's Palace or Kim Son Buffet but it holds its own in terms of Cantonese food. However, the food comes with a caveat: make sure to get the right dishes. My group consisted of 10 people total so we ordered a garden variety of options from the menu. Several of them tasted delicious, but it was roughly 60% hit and 40% miss. I don't remember a lot of the names since we ordered so much, but a couple of personal recommendations: Dry Beef Noodle Chow Fun - my favorite at this visit. A staple of Cantonese cuisine, and a crowd pleaser. 5/5 Salt and Pepper Pork - I'm usually a sucker for this dish but the taste was not consistent on 2 separate orders. One tasted great, the other had too much fat and barely any meat. 3.5/5 Egg Tart - great way to finish the meal, but make sure to give it some time to cool off. Otherwise, by the time you reach the custard, you'll realize that it's piping hot and have to choose between quickly eating it without enjoyment or leaving a soggy half-finished custard on the plate. 4/5 The interior contains older/traditional features of lavish Chinese styles including chandeliers and round spinning tables. Although I wasn't checking my watch, the food turnaround time felt acceptable. But since it's a dim sum restaurant, I ordered few items to validate my presence. The service was actually better most other reviewers. But the food quality was subpar. Sorry, you don't put parsley in cilantro dish. I know it's not their fault but blame it on the grocery store. Boohoo. It's kitchen's failure not to catch it. Shanghai dumplings were not supposed fall apart as I picked up with my chopsticks. There was no soup spoon for me to catch the soup. So, the little bit of soup went all over the place. I came in here with my American friend, hopefully trying to open them up to trying dimsum and more Chinese cuisine. Unfortunately, this was not the right place to demonstrate Chinese hospitality. Despite coming in during slow hours and there being plenty of waitstaff, very few wanted to actually engage with us. It was so difficult to wave over a waitress to put in orders, despite two of them talking with another family. There was very little interaction between us, and the waitress seemed eager to leave us. Interior was relatively dull as well, quiet, but well lit. I feel like it needs more atmosphere, personally. As for the food, I must say, everything was alright for the most part. Some dishes came out a little cold, or room temperature, which was a little off putting for me. As for the salt and pepper squid, I was not expecting it to be beer-battered, as many other Chinese restaurants cook it differently. As I am Chinese myself, I can't say for certain if that's a different style or if it is just to make it appear larger and add more dough. Overall, I was a little disappointed with the service and was hoping that the food would be a little more true to my tastebuds, since it was true to the dim-sum price. The most negative thing in this experience was the unannounced automatic 18% gratuity added to the bill. In US restaurants, this is not a common practice with a small party (we only had three people dining that time). My party had the steamed shrimp dumpling, pork sticky rice, steamed egg custard bun with egg yolk, Chinese sausage bun roll, fried bean curd skin roll, deep fried red bean ball, baked bbq pork bun, egg custard, steamed shrimp, and steamed beef rice rolls, fried egg noodle with soy sauce, and flat rice noodle with chicken. The steamed shrimp dumpling had very thin skin which was delicious. The pork sticky rice had the right texture and taste. The egg custard bun with egg yolk was not runny which was a let down. The Chinese sausage bun roll had a very fluffy bun and the texture contrast with the Chinese sausage was good. The red bean ball was very crispy but too little red bean filling. The baked bbq pork bun was delicious. Love the filling inside. The egg custard had crispy tart shell but the custard was tasteless. The rice rolls were not thin and the filling was insufficient.
