There is no reasonable charge for this and the company is clearly aware of the predatory nature of this work. Find a reputable locksmith or friend first, I can certainly say this entire experience left me unsatisfied with them and I will be sure to let everyone I know to NEVER use this shoddy place. I had a terrible experience with Golden Key. My lock was malfunctioning late last night, rendering me unable to get inside. I didn't think I could afford a locksmith, but given that this was an emergency, my mother offered to help as much as she was able. I chose Golden Key because they promised transparency on their website, but on the phone they didn't give me any kind of price point. I was obviously upset, and perhaps hard to understand, but that should've give n me pause. Golden Key promised they'd arrive in thirty to forty minutes, but the technician (Moshe? signed "M" in receipt and automated text said that was my technician) showed up an hour and a half after I had been confirmed for service. I had already been locked out for over an hour when I called the locksmith. Upon his arrival, I had to wait for him downstairs because he was smoking a cigarette. When he came upstairs and took a look at my lock, he quoted me $475, which I was clear I couldn't afford. I was made to feel like there was no other option-- he even quoted another solution at $1,000, which I was adamantly clear I could not afford, and briefly talked about tacking on an extra $100. I was exhausted, obviously upset, and therefore easy to take advantage of. When the door was opened, the technician insisted on $475. When I called my mother, she was equally shocked by this price, and asked to speak to him. M proceeded to blame me, saying that I "could've sent him away if I couldn't afford it." I don't think that's how you need to speak to anyone you're doing business with, much less someone in distress at 5:00 AM with no sleep. This locksmith was the only person who had responded to my emergency, so I naturally felt it would've been counterintuitive to send him away. It is an understatement to say that he also knew this. M insisted that the payment had to be in cash, and told me to go withdraw it from the ATM downstairs and across the street if I didn't have it. He stood outside and watched me while I withdrew the money. I insisted upon a receipt before I handed over payment, and on it he wrote it was an "after hours emergency." If a locksmith services promotes itself as a 24-hour solution to emergencies, how can any service be after hours? I felt manipulated and exhausted by the end of this transaction. I would not recommend this business to anyone, especially someone experiencing an emergency or distress. read more

Actual highway robbery. Needed a simple lock opened and they charged me over $1K. Took them literally 20 minutes. They will tack on as many random surprise charges as they can and never give you an accurate estimate of the price. They charge extra for coming at night but don't even bother trying to get around that by scheduling for the morning - will cost you an extra $100 too! They were fast but at what cost. I wish I found somewhere that treated customers with dignity and gave the curtesy of actually having prices. I feel incredible angry and taken advantage of for my experience here. Do not call them if you need a locksmith. Imagine 2:15am, and you are waiting on a locksmith. You call several times to check on the arrival and the dispatcher says, "let me check and I'll call you back." They never call back, so you call again. Imagine it's 3:27am. This is me. read more

This company is a front for several bogus companies that will come in an emergency when you know you are at their mercy and then screw you to the wall. Golden key is not the company of record when they answer your call. I was locked out of my store in mid town manhattan at 11:00 AM. It took them all of an hour to fix the problem and then charged $1363.00 The online charge reciept has no company name, no address or phone number. The owner is Steven Gruenstein who has set this up with outside guys who show up when he calls them but he denies this. He uses his store as a front.. He uses other phone numbers that he answers and does his dirty work. I have contested the charge with my cc company and spoken to him and he denies. His online receipt for payment has no co. name, address or phone number. Stay away. read more

literally the biggest ripoff. $479 for what? to drill a hole in my doorknob?? it is highway robbery, on top of that when my super came by the next way to replace the lock he said they didn't even do it correctly. Update in 2011: a new lock installation at another location wasn't as pleasant as my first experience... but getting copies made at the store remains quick and easy. This place came highly recommended from someone who takes care of lots of property. I arranged an appointment with Golden Key for a lock installation and their service was fast, efficient and very professional! If i could i would give them - amount of stars. Had to install to dead bolts in 2 doors, the guy had the worst attitude ever. He ruined the paint (6-8inches worth) on both doors, when i said i wont pay the full price for this crapy job, he threated to call the cops, i had no problem with that. 1. Horrible service 2. When a key broke for an antique cabinet I wasn't sure what I was going to be able to do about it without ruining the cabinet door. I went to my local locksmith and, in a few days, he was able to remake the key by hand. Guy was very helpful and polite. I called the office about a broken lock and Charles was able to get a technician out to me shortly with the right replacement and equipment and gave me a quote that the team honored. Lotty and Steve did a great job replacing the lock -- even fixing some previous shoddy workmanship from decades gone by. They treated me like family and made sure I would be safe and secure in the apartment, and then cleaned up after themselves. Really standup folks. On Monday a terminated employee gained access to my office after business hours and I contacted Golden Key to assist with changing the locks. A technician arrived within 25 minutes and speedily changed the lock. While speaking with the technician I learned that the Company provides Access Control Systems that can be useful when providing/controlling access to employees, I requested a quote and decided to pursue this option to secure my business and ensure peace of mind. Additionally, given the new environment we are operating in post COVID-19 access control would provide keyless entry to employees and clients reducing risk of exposure by reducing touch points. Today, a Golden Key technician installed and set-up the Access Control System, the transition was seamless. Overall, I found Golden Key to be reasonably priced, reliable, knowledgeable and professional for a locksmith company. Not a conversationalist, but I didn't have the same experience as other reviewers (lucky, perhaps?). I had three keys made, none of which worked. However, upon returning, he acknowledged that he had used the wrong blank, and without an additional word, refunded my money and referred me on to a different locksmith. Yes, this is what you would expect from any store with basic customer service and certainly not what I would call "exemplary", but I would hate to have people completely write him off for even the most basic requests based on these other reviews. read more

We were very happy with their service: We live in an Apt with an old door & worn out lock, the door was harder and harder to open - our Mgmt company sent Steven to take take a look. He exchanged the lock and flexed down part of the plate, worked fast and efficiently and even cleaned up after he was done. Turned out that the whole door frame is crooked, so he came back for a second look and made some adjustments - now it works reliably! Our experience with Golden Key was very good. He came over for an emergency very quickly and fixed or replaced both locks on our front door. His parts and labor charges seemed quite reasonable. (The top lock was problematic to fit and took a long time.) Six weeks later, the top lock had somehow shifted and was inoperative. He came back, worked for nearly an hoiur and a half to wrestle it back into position. He would not take any pay for this trip. So our experience was that Golden Key is a hard-working local business that stands behind its work. read more
