It's not your typical rough and tumble, almost intimidating tattoo place but it's a lot more low key, and I guess spiritual? is how I'd say. Another cool thing, it's female owned and all of the tattoo artists and the piercer are women. Girl power!! Steph is my lady, and she is SO TALENTED. Just saying that she is an unbelievably skilled artist is only putting it lightly and not giving her the justice she deserves. She is truly in the right industry. She's also just so nice and down to earth so you feel very comfortable from the get go. Steph's section of the shop has a ton of her watercolor paintings hung up, and I usually just stare in awe at those most of my appointments because they're awesome. Most of the artists have their own art hung up all around the shop which is super cool in my opinion. Just take a look at some of the work Steph's done on me, and you should see just what I'm saying. When she worked on the gems on my arm, she used this special technology to make the gems black and white outlines, and she said she looks at them a specific way, in which she's been trained, in order to bring them to life. It was just so fascinating to me and I know I can trust her with anything. She's done half of my tattoos and I'll keep going to her as long as I am able or anytime I'm in town. She's great at designing ink as well. I had an idea for a tattoo I really wanted but wasn't quite sure how to make it all come together. I told her what I was thinking and she helped turn it into an amazing tat that I get tons of compliments on. I really can't say enough good things about Steph and all the rest of the gals at Bee's Nest. If the other women aren't tattooing they'll come say hi during my appointments a lot and chat and they are all just so sweet and welcoming. I love this place!

I called a few other shops, and all of them said I could stop in to discuss my ideas. No problem! My idea was basic, and literally any decent artist could do it. However, most of them treated me like I was a nuisance. Whatever. It's not like I was a paying customer or anything. Finally, someone treated me with respect. The lady helped me by giving me Athena's email address to send her my ideas, so I payed my deposit and was on my way. The time came for my appointment. Since I hadn't met with Athena, I was instructed to come in a little early so she could consult with me and draw up my idea. She started by drawing my quill right onto my arm so I could see the placement. She then drew a quill in three different sizes so we could pick the perfect size. Athena was great about giving me her honest opinion, but still let me make the final decision. We finally agreed on the size, and she began. This definitely wasn't my first tattoo, but I apparently don't handle the wrist very well. I am embarrassed to admit this, but I got extremely light headed. Yep, that's right. I almost fainted. Pause for humiliating laughter. Athena repositioned me and was really great about the whole embarrassing situation. 5 hours later, and I was finished. I seriously cried when I saw it. I'm definitely scheduling an appointment with Athena next time I'm in Fargo. The prices are fair and everyone is really friendly. I figured it would be next to impossible to find a quality, detail-oriented stylist who would coddle my fragile hair ego, so you can imagine my shock to find an actual session stylist right here in Fargo! Kari at Mad Hatter Salon is fun, quirky and all sorts of kitschy... just like me. I was as nervous as a virgin on her wedding night when I walked through the door of her small shop on Broadway for the first time, but Kari immediately set to work making me feel comfortable and welcome. She listened to me and took time to understand all of my needs, fears and desires and was willing to work with my obsessive nature to achieve a compromise between my current posh, cosmopolitan style and my sleek, vintage wedding style this February. And even though a small issue cropped up days later, she worked me into her exceedingly busy schedule to fix the problem-- all with the wonderful grace and humour of a true professional. I will be coming back to see her as often as I can. And while I won't be able to see my dear sweet Lisa in Atlanta as often any more, she can at least rest assured that I am in very capable and lovely hands.

Makes us sad, she was great at hair cuts. Maybe she we will finally get back to us and I can revise this review. Just wanted to update this. Only had one hair cut from Kari, and then no response from her. During the cut she was very nice and friendly. Since this post I have also recommended her to people. Sense I did feel she did a great job at hair cuts. She may not want to cut my hair anymore but I still felt she deserved business. To date the 6 or 7 clients I have sent her way she has also done the same thing to. Maybe she only wants to cut her friends hair. As for the review that bashed my review. If a stylists wants to "break up" with a client maybe you should not schedule appointments with them and then be no shows. That is what angered me more then anything. That was why we tried calling and getting in touch with her. Because she was a no show. Dont make the appointment to begin with. We are all adults here.
