After seven years, we recently unenrolled our children from Goldfish Wicker Park after two and a half years of repeated frustrations with communication, instructional accountability, and prolonged stagnation in swim levels. Most recently, our daughter spent approximately 13 months in one level at a cost of nearly $1,700, only to be told she still had not mastered skills that should have been intentionally addressed throughout the year. What was most disappointing was not simply the slow progression, but the lack of proactive communication and the repeated feeling that meaningful intervention only occurred after parent escalation. This has now happened multiple times across both of our children. Rather than acknowledging the pattern or engaging thoughtfully with our concerns, management became highly defensive and focused primarily on justifying staff actions through internal notes. We fully understand that children progress differently and that safety matters. However, families also deserve transparency, progress monitoring, and a collaborative approach when concerns are raised, especially at the price point of these lessons. There are many wonderful instructors there, and our frustration is not with individual young staff members. I will start out by saying that my baby doesn't take lessons here. It's a little far away for me when there are a few places closer, and it's also pretty popular and sometimes hard to get into (my friend was on the wait list for a class and had to scramble to get in) so I chose somewhere else. It's awesome that they have infant classes, and when I visited there was a children's class in full swing and looked like everyone was having a blast! But said friend let me know that they have a great selection of swim products and that is why I stopped in. Swim diapers are a thing I didn't know existed and I wanted a reusable one. They sell Green Sprouts (I think that's the brand), which one can get on Amazon but I needed one right away so I stopped in. I may have come when they were a little low on inventory so I couldn't pick up one of the super cute ones, but I got one that works great, just boring in pattern. The price was great so buying from Amazon would have just been a bit of a convenience with the home delivery. Parking lot here is huge, so you'll have no problems finding a space. (In fact, that's a major attraction for my friend.) The staff were really friendly as well, and if it was a bit closer I'd probably come here for swim lessons. read more

This convenience is amazing, but you need pool access. Additionally, Goldfish offers the benefit of social interaction with other kids, which I think helps reduce any intimidation about swimming. 2. **UIC Swim Classes:** We've also tried UIC's group lessons, which are more affordable ($22 per class). However, the experience is comparable but inferior in many small ways. While their instructors follow structured exercises, they vary in engagement, providing little feedback and few opportunities for underwater practice. Facilities-wise, UIC is less convenient: parking is paid, entry is restricted to exactly within 15 minutes of class, and changing areas are limited. Great swim school usually 1 to 4 kids per class. If you're not an infant class, don't expect to swim with your kid. 30 minute classes strict. So don't be late and don't be early. If you don't like your swim teacher, maybe not a good fit for your kid, and maybe like a substitute better, don't be afraid to speak up. They're pretty cool about it. My daughter has been there since junior one and she's been doing amazing and now in gliders. Even considering hobby swimming, I don't know. She's only four but maybe a Michael Phelps or Katie Ledecky, let's go ! Coach Juan is amazing. read more

The Wicker Park location is welcoming and accommodating. The staff are more than willing to assist you when asked for help in providing a session for your child. I was patient and waited for a class session to open. I have watched students go from not wanting to get in the water, let alone have it come into contact with them, to a satisfying feeling of calmness to the water, feeling confident about the water. Safety, cleanliness and maintenance are intact. If someone notices something out of place that needs attending to, staff will work on it immediately. My child loves to swim and has been going there since she was a toddler. Her confidence level in the water now leads to comfort and a stress relief from school disciplines/activities i.e. academia, drama, art club, martial arts, and band. One of the best swim schools in Chicago, I enjoy bringing kids here to learn to swim and the instructors here really help build their confidence. I brought my nephew here and watch him grow in experience and he moved up to next level in only three weekends. I like the convince for the well-being for the students after the swim meaning that they supply the student shampoo for the students after the swim lesson and they can change into dry clothes in individual stalls. They have like a little hair drying and combing area for students also. Parents are able to view all students activities in waiting area which is behind a glass wall looking into each lane of the pool area. There are plenty of free private and street parking. read more

We tried our first (free) swim class this week and it was great. The front of house was so friendly and gave us a tour of the place. It is clean and bright and basically a kid heaven decor wise. I am pretty certain my kid thought he was in a "Baby Shark" theme park. My kid had so much fun (even though his instructor looked like he was struggling to stay awake or maybe he was tired of singing by 6pm)? Needless to say, we will be back, but TBD on when we will feel ready to pay that much for the 30 min class/monthly pass. read more

I just had my daughter's 5th bday party this past Saturday at Goldfish. Everyone had such a great time. All the staff was so nice and always asked what else they could do. I have hosted parties at other venues before and this is at the top of the list for great service and great venue. I was able to drop off my decorations a day in advance so then the day of the event I could focus more on food. The staff on Friday greeted me warmly and helped me take all the things out of my car. They even helped fold my tablecloths because I threw them in my car last minute. I also gave them my goody bags and they kept them safe in the office. I quickly went through some directions for my decorations while I was there. This was helpful because when I walked in running late as usual on the day of the event they had already started decorating. You probably could aim to come in 45 minutes earlier than your party start time because you can start setting up 30 minutes prior. Gabby has a great design sense and helped put my cake table together and set up the food tables. She was really patient with my OCD tendencies. Also, I agree with the another review done last year that all the staff were so accommodating and super friendly. They were there to help with all the details. In addition to ordering pizza, I brought in appetizers and drinks and they set it all up and packed everything at the end of the party. Added bonus they put tattoos on the kids while they ate. I had brought them in thinking we would probably need to put them on ourselves. Some nice extras are Goldfish provides the cupcakes, Goldfish Graham cookies (the large ones), and Hawaiian leis. The cupcakes are ordered from Mariano's. It's nice that you can choose the color of the cupcake frosting. They put my themed cupcake toppers on the cupcakes. The staff did everything I asked and did it well. They did a great job keeping to the schedule which helped me move the party along smoothly. The online swim waiver made check-in so fast. I would recommend having everyone come in a few minutes earlier so they are ready when the pool is available to maximize the pool time given. The kids were a little sad when the lifeguards blew the whistle to let them know pool time was over but I think the time allotted was the right balance of the kids not being overly tired and still getting plenty of swim time. The kids were provided with pizza as soon they were dressed and sat in a seat. We didn't have to wait for everyone to be ready at the same time. They were starving after pool time. These little things eliminated any waiting and kept the kids happy. The pool had so many different things for the kids to play with such as noodles, a boat (a big hit with the kids),styrofoam floats, and other toys. Also, there were two lifeguards watching the kids the entire time. They provided life jackets and goggles (my daughter forgot hers) if needed. There are so many more details that I left out but only good ones. I was actually able to enjoy myself this time. Plenty of time to converse with adults since the kids are busy in the pool and the staff is so helpful. Definitely recommend this place and kudos to the 5 star staff this weekend! read more

My 2yr old loves coming here. Starting off she hated getting her face wet therefor going underwater with her head was out of question but now 2months in. She's comfortable with getting her face wet and going underwater, occasionally....now we are working on keeping her mouth closed while doing so lol Our instructor Lauren is the cutest. She makes everyone in the group young and us old folks feel comfortable. As far as for COVID they taking things very serious which I love. Very small classes everyone stays for then 6feet apart from each other. Temperature check before coming in and they ask everyone to wear masks until you are in your swim area. They clean the changing rooms after every use and there are signs that tell you which ones have been cleaned. I can only recommend this place! read more

My daughter has been at this goldfish location since 2018. The facility is clean, faculty are nice and welcoming. My only concern is that my daughter has been at the same level for 2 years. I have talked to multiple staff members about my concern and my daughter would be monitored and someone would get in the pool with her a couple of times within the span of 2 years. There doesn't seem to be anything in place for children who fall behind. Every now and then you'll get an instructor that pays attention to your child's individual needs but because there is a high turnover rate it doesn't last long and your child has to get used to a new instructor and that instructor has to get used to your child.... Which isn't a problem as long as the instructor doesn't get stuck in their trained routine. I don't see my daughter growing further at this establishment and will sadly have to look elsewhere. I've watched her enthusiasm dwindle and she seems very "meh" about going to swimming each week. To see that my daughter has been at the same level for years and nothing has been done about it is disappointing. She notices she's the tallest and oldest in the class and she's seen kids move up over and over. We enrolled our daughter when she was a year old and the initial beginner classes were good. The child becomes acquainted with the water. But once you move up to the next level class and the parent is no longer in the water, the classes get worse. My daughter is currently in a class with two other 2 year olds and she spends a total of 4 min in the water out of a 30 min class. We timed the amount of time she was in the water on two different occasions and it was 4 minutes. She spent the rest of the time sitting on the side of the pool waiting her turn. At this rate, her improvement will be extremely slow. Also, be very aware that you can not cancel a class without paying for it. You will receive a "make up token" which we now have over 20 of them and will never be able to make up all those days. You can not get money back for days missed for any reason. The instructors are nice, but it is way too expensive to just have your kid in the water for under 5 min per class. read more

You can do better. listen these swim schools are focused on teaching your kids to swim in slowest way possible so they can make money. 4 kids per class in a 28 min class. 7 mins of actual personalized swim instruction and swim time = no results. my daughter was in these classes for 2 years. I thought there was something wrong with her coordination!? i spent over a $1000 hoping my kids would learn to swim well and while she made progress after 2 years, she couldn't swim. other friends and neighbors had the same issue. so I decided to pay for $60 per half hour private lessons. my daughter learned in 3 lessons. when I think about all the days I spent driving to and from this swim school, in the pool, showers, cold Chicago winters with wet hair. I get so mad. you can do better, please learn from my mistake! read more

I debated on leaving a review since my concern is mild and mainly related to customer service but I just visited this facility on Friday and it seemed to be fairly empty with only a couple classes for little ones going on. I was very happy as I had to change my appointment date and they were very accommodating for a trial class which I found to be very helpful. I was told on the phone to arrive 10 mins early to allow for time to tour the facility and go over things before class. (Note: They were also able to accommodate my stepson and add him into the same class as my daughter who are both 7!) This is where my story turns: I walked up to the desk to check in. I gave their names and the employee said "ok". I waited for about a minute for some direction and then just asked if they should change and she said yes. Still kind of lost I wandered to the opposite end of the facility and found the changing rooms and had my kids change. I was under the impression someone was supposed to take us around maybe? My kids changed and we sat and waited for their class time. 2 mins before they were supposed to go in I elected to walk them through a door but they caught that it was labeled "wet door" and as the exit so once again we looked around for where to go. The deck supervisor called out for 10am classes where we found the entrance. She and another woman (who I think was a manager) said hello and walked my kids in. Here I thought maybe someone would go over membership options or my very much awaited tour (lol) But I was told I could sit and watch my kids. The deck supervisor brought me a flyer during their class with information on the goals for their skill level. I was also able to go in and observe for 5 minutes which I loved! However, at the end of the lesson I was still somewhat disappointed that nobody came to check in on how our experience was or maybe go over membership options as I had firmly intended to sign both of them up that day and begin classes this week. (We are going to Hawaii next year so I need to get them swimming! Haha) We waited around the front desk after class, took a photo with their ribbons, and to see if there was anyone available to talk but sadly we were a little overlooked. I have received several marketing calls to try them out for a trial lesson since but I was already there and my kids loved it! :( Once again, so sad to leave 3 stars but I really wish the customer service was just a little more polished as the location is clean and beautiful and we had a great experience but maybe it's as simple as training employees on what the protocol is for new students or coming up with a better marketing system to keep track of these things! My 3-year old has been a member for 3 months now, and he LOVES his instructors - Derek and Klaudia. Both the instructors are fantastic, very patient and attentive. You can tell that they really want kids to enjoy swimming and improve in skills. Derek would encourage children to try again and again to avoid developing bad habits (it takes a lot of patience!). Klaudia makes sure kids have a great time while learning and she hints kids the right posture with big smiles - and my son would do it right by following her advice. When he was a few months old, we used to take him to a different swim school near home for a few months. I would say that it is definitely worth driving to get to GF swim school. We recently went on a vacation, and I was amazed to see him float, swim, dive, jump into the pool. Wow. Thanks a lot! read more

This organization has toxic customer service. Let me start with quality of teachers - they are swimmers not teachers. They mostly use the class time talking to kids and giving demonstrations and not helping kids learn or build stamina / skills. Next, if you raise a concern / give feedback, you are routed to a series of different supervisors who keep deflecting to their colleagues and / or being defensive. The owner / general manager is rarely there at the facility and does nothing about your feedback. Lastly, they keep switching teachers constantly to ensure classes run and they make money but your kid could get a different teacher everytime with zero continuity. If you have ANY ALTERNATIVE go there instead. read more

As a parent, I love this place. What's even more important is that our kid is obsessed with this place and looks forward to her swimming lessons every week. The facility is incredible: colorful, vibrant, clean...in the waiting area side it almost makes you feel like you're at a tiki bar and in the swimming area reminds me of the movie Free Willie. What's probably the best part about Goldfish is that the water temperature is always comfortable at 91F degrees. If warm water doesn't make you want jump in, what will? The instructors here are warm, friendly, engaging, and know what they're doing. Most of the activities are play-based and inviting to young children. We recently had a birthday party here for our 2-year old, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Everything from planning to executing was smooth--of course you should work with the event planner if you have a very specific idea of how the day should run, but for the most part, they help you make it happen! It was a total of 2 hours. 75 minutes of swim time (that is plenty enough for small 2-year olds), and 45 minutes of awkward cake-cutting celebration time (plenty enough for an introvert like myself). If you are looking for something different to do for your toddler's birthday and decide that a traditional banquet hall just isn't going to entertain your active child, I highly recommend Goldfish. We brought our son here for I think 1.5 years? Maybe a little over a year because of a break in the middle? Overall it was... fine. I mean I think the main reason we went is our son really liked the water, and splashing around, and it was something to do with him when he was really small (we started when he was 6 months). Unfortunately I just didn't think this was worth the money. I mean I don't know what I expect a 6 month old to learn, but after 1.5 years my kid still would actively gulp water anytime we dunked him under, he wasn't crazy about sea otter backfloat, he didn't mimic the arm and leg movements we tried. I mean maybe it's just him, but thinking to where he started, and where he ended up, I'd say... it was the same. Did he learn anything? I honestly don't think so. And $90 a month is a lot of money for 25 min of splashing in a pool each week. I did have some complaints - so this place is SUPER CROWDED. Maybe it's if you are enrolled in weekend lessons (as we were) but it's such a crowded nightmare. Sometimes impossible to find a changing room. The changing tables for small babies are always full (there were only 2, and sometimes only 1 if the second changing pad was missing). The parking lot is also a real nightmare (this is just my bitter grapes but my car was dinged/dented twice (badly enough to require a trip to the body shop each time), but I partly think the spots here are just not up to code- they are SO SMALL. They seemed, to me, smaller than any other place I've been (and honestly when I asked around, other parents commented the same - that the spots seemed smaller than required- and it doesn't help that 90% of the families here, including us, were driving SUVs). We stopped using the lot and started parking on the street and walking over. I also wasn't crazy about some of the policies. So when we started going, our son was taking 2 naps a day. Eventually he was taking 1, and class time conflicted with nap. Alas, none of the times that would have worked had openings, so we had to go on hiatus - but there's not really a hiatus. You just have to cancel and re-enroll. And - you can't carry over your makeup lessons. Initially this seemed really ridiculous (because it is), but then I realized, we never used any of the stupid makeups. If you have a flexible schedule (read: are not a family of 2 working parents), maybe you can schedule makeups during the week, but for us - if we missed a class, that was it, we just missed it. It's nice they offer makeups, but for us it was moot. So yeah- when we had to drop out/re-enroll due to nap issues, we were told we could keep 4 of the 13 or so makeups we had (again, this seemed unfair but AGAIN I never used them so I guess it made no difference). But it did seem like we were being punished for something that wasn't our fault - we weren't cancelling because we wanted to stop, they just weren't able to fit us anywhere else that worked. Lastly, if you do cancel, be careful and watch your credit card. I got confirmation our cancellation went through but then a week later I was charged for the next month's classes anyway (an email to Goldfish cleared this up quickly, which I appreciated). But do keep an eye. I don't know. Maybe I expected too much. But literally for over a year, we did the same. exact. thing. every class, and maybe that's how every swim class is for babies, but for us it didn't pay off. I don't think my kid learned a thing. And I'll keep my $90 and splash in my tub at home for now. read more

Two stars could be a little harsh, but we found the makeup policy restrictive and annoying. Basically, you can only make up missed lessons while actively taking lessons. So, you'd need to be able to go multiple times per week, which many families (like ours) could find hard. Also in the negatives column, the web interface/enrollment process is broken and confusing. It took us 3-4 attempts to fix, with the staff confused. With those negatives, the lessons, staff, and facilities were fine. read more

Both of my kids (6 & 3) started at Goldfish the week it opened and they are in love with it! My son has always been shy do to many things because of some conditions that he has, being at Goldfish has given him so much confidence and I want to thank his teachers for that! He hasn't been this happy about things in a long time! I like it because it encourages him to do better at school and try his hardest because he says "mom I tried to do better today can we go to Goldfish for family swim?" So that's a big plus! I love how in family swim it's a decent amount of people. The facility is always Clean. The staff look like they are happy to see you at all times, some even greet you by name! I'm happy I went with my gut instinct and signed up with Goldfish! I try to make people come visit the place with me on family swim days to show off how beautiful the place is and they say "wow this is way better than _________" So I tell them to come on over to the brighter side of swim schools! Prior to my daughters party today they were keeping in touch with me through email to answer any questions, they spoke to me days before the party to confirm final thoughts on the party details. Today the day of couldn't have gone any better! Wow, the whole team working the party today was great! Thank you! I felt no type of stress at all! They handled everything so smoothly! This place is great, super friendly staff, extremely clean facility and large well maintained pool. We have had my daughter, who is a toddler, in classes for a few months. There are a couple of nice perks about being enrolled. 1st you get access to all of the open family swims. 2nd they have a play area for the kids before the lesson starts. They also have drinks/coffee available for sale and of course my daughters favorite the $0.25 candy station. There is really only one reason they did not get 5 stars and that is because whoever designed the parking lot clearly wanted to maximize the number of spaces they could fit, rather then taking into consideration families will be loading and unloading their children. In some cases I have to have my little one wait on the curb while I back up out of the spot. Other then this minor issue, this place is great! read more

The layout is fantastic with a play area, the perfect space for parents to watch classes, warm showers and private changing areas. The space is great and it has a parking lot (always a plus in my book!!) so it makes it super easy for coming and going to lessons with your littles in tow. Our son ADORES his instructors (Miss Paige & Miss Joscelyn) and we've seen rapid improvement in his swimming skills. We love Goldfish Swim School! Our 17 month old son enjoys every bit of it as well; the fun songs, engaging and effective activities to help him learn, and the motivating instructors. They take their time and know their students' skill level and readiness. The classes are on time and transitions run smoothly as the showers, changing rooms, and dryers are just what we need after. We love the Goldfish swim school in Michigan. Then we decide to try the Wicker Park one after moved to Chicago. However, the water is not very clear and clean, compare to the Michigan one. Teacher is not very enthusiastic and engaging. The program and toy is fun as we expected but we decided not to go. I have not compared other baby swim school in Chicago yet so we will see. read more

Not happy with recent often cancellations on the spot due to "pool contamination ". No one updates you or helps with make up scheduling. When complained, was told, there is nothing more they can do, as they have already offered free swimming diaper in the welcoming package. As customers, we understand accident happens. But, if accidents happen on a regular basis, that is not accidental, something must be wrong. We are not paying monthly fee to go the pool, changed, and told the class is canceled, twice a month. Not mentioning how to explain that to a crying two year old, who has been waiting for the swimming lesson for the whole week. read more

My family loves this place and my son was only 4 months old when he first stared going. My guy is almost one and loves the water. I do appreciate they way they handled the review. They take the reviews and surveys sent by them through email very serious and that speaks volumes about Goldfish. They even offered to give my son $45 credit for 2 classes. I really do hate to give Goldfish Such low ratings but this is just for this location. The instructors and staff treat their job like a joke and do not take it serious. I will not be returning to this location based on my last experience. Our instructor started off the class by saying "bare with me I'm functioning on only 3-4 hours of sleep because I have a second job doing hair" She was 100% tired and low energy. She even ended the class 5 min prior. I stayed in the pool with my son until the 30 min of class were up. The last five minutes of class she stayed in the pool with her eyes closed. Mean while my son and I were playing in the pool. The class was small just my son and another boy. The other mom/nanny did leave early because her baby was cold. These baby classes are only 30 min and not cheap. I will not be returning to this location. I do wish the owners would hire more mature and serious employees. read more

they literally never answer the phones! if your child can't make it and you need to have a makeup class good luck getting through.
