We enjoyed walking around the mountaintop and taking in all the spectacular views of San Sebastian and the coast. We also enjoyed getting some spritzes at the bar and sipping on them with the ultimate view. Without the rides it's not a place you'll spend too much time, but still worth the visit for the views and a ride on the historic funicular. Would love to come back and go on some rides in the future.

This is an outstanding service. there is a great…read moreselection of boards available for rent, an easy online reservation service, and easy coordination to get your board delivered to your hotel/vacation home. In my case, it was easier to pick my board up at the store and the exchange was flawless. Marty was busy at the times when i was at the shop, but he is friendly and personable regardless. Dude sounds like he has surfed all over the world, so i bet he is a great resource for planning your surf experience in France, but we had an agenda already. For the good quality board you get, the price of the rental is reasonable. I rented a ding-free 5-9 Firewire GoFish for a clean 3-4 foot (Hawaiian scale) swell. It was just a little bit surprising to have to pay for a bar of wax, but everyone has to make a living, so it is what it is. I do believe that if you are a serious surfer, for a hi-quality surf location like Biarritz/Hossegor you should bring your own gear, but Marty's selection allows for most people to get something close to what they would ride on their similar home breaks. Our trip involved different agendas and multiple stops in Europe and USA, so we could not travel with boards, and we are thankful that Marty's Surf Shop exists. FYI the shop is an easy straight shot 5-10 min town drive south from Cote de Basques.

My kids born in USA from French parents love this carousel…read more Typical "modern" French carousel with cars, moving plane, helicopter, space shuttle, truck, etc. My kids love the old-style American carousels with horses, but I suspect they have a preference for the French ones, particularly when you can play the "ponpon" game: grabbing a dangling "ponpon" and winning a free ride. Had a terrific surfing lesson and subsequent board rental this past weekend at La Vague Basque…read more Located amongst a group of surf schools operating out of tents just past the end of Boulevard de Prince de Galles, they were comfortable with foreigners, and heard speaking french, english, and spanish. I took a 90 minute lesson from 1830-2000, when the crowds were thinning out and the waves were a little cleaner. Having taken maybe 4-5 lessons in my life, this one was by far the most helpful, most fun, and most professional. My instructor's name was Franck, and he was great. He had a group of 6 of us, and a couple of us had a little experience. Rather than hold everyone on the same level, Franck had 4 people working to stand, me working on turning, and my girlfriend working on something else. I think that's unusual, and speaks very highly of this school. Most of the other places I have gone they just kept it too basic. Here, they were trying to improve everyone's skills, and they really didn't waste any time out of the water aside from the initial theory, foot placement, etc. The beach they operate out of is great because the further north you go toward the wall, the more protected and smaller the swell. Then just off to the south a bit, you have some very good surfers riding much bigger waves. Inbetween, you can step it up as you see fit. Having taken a lesson with them, you then get a great rate on board / wetsuit rentals. This place was great, and I highly recommend the dusk lesson followed by a beer at the top of the hill above the school. There's a little bar up there where you'll see a good crowd, and you can watch some of the really good surfers as they keep pressing it a little later.
