This is a pretty solid vegan option in Box Hill. I really recommend the fake meat options. Well seasoned, nothing bland.

I won't lie though, the service can sometimes seem a little abrupt but when food tastes this good I can ignore it! Do book ahead though. At the normal meal times this place it packed and bustling. The great thing is, it's not filled with the usual vegan and veg crowd, it's generally full of large Asian families out for yum Cha and enjoying each other's company. Makes for a great meal without the 'hip' factor. Make it on a Sunday at lunch for the yumcha menu. You tick off on a sheet what you want and they bring out all your little dishes. I recommend the pan fried dumplings. Get 2 serves (there's 5 in a serve and I'm greedy!). The curry mock lamb should also not be overlooked. Probably the best dish on the restaurant! Lunch menus come with rice and are quite cheap (~$10) while the dinner menu is the full meals better for sharing and you add steamed rice on the side.

I am not a big vegetarian eater but was so impressed with all aspects on the Vegie Hut. The food was outstanding, the flavour, portion size, fair price and did I mention the taste!! Service also was brilliant, intelligent well informed waitress', food was out quickly (even before they said it was going to be) which always makes me happy and the meals all came out at one - fantastic service. The only thing that confused me was how the food was on the menu. Some dishes clearly looked like a meat meal and although it was a vegetarian one I found you had to ask what was in it if it wasn't meat. A few vegetarian friends don't eat meat because of the taste, so a few dishes they wouldn't enjoy. There were still a few pure veg dishes like the hot and spicy eggplant which I had - absolutely delicious. The setting was so inviting, it was just a great place to be. A table next to us was reading a book it was just so ambient but everyone was able to talk also. We we lucky to get in without a booking but it quickly filled so will be sure to get one next time. I will definitely be going back, may even be a regular weekly thing. It has been so long since I went out to lunch and didn't feel greasy or sickly full after eating such a big meal. The food fells so healthy its like your organs have gone to the gym.

Parking is for 2 hours with additional 2 hour parking space available just across from the supermarket parking on Brougham Street. V Series was previously known to locals as 'A Caterpillar's Dream' and under new management, the same management/family as Tao's Restaurant in Bulleen, it has now become V Series with the same head chef. The cafe like the previous cafe still serves contemporary vegetarian food with vegan and gluten free options. When we arrived at 11:30am on a Saturday, the supermarket parking was very full so we drove through to the car park on Brougham Street. The cafe itself was reasonably calm and having tried the food, I am a little surprised that was the case. The menu itself, I must admit was a little overwhelming with a mish mash of cuisines and types of food available; meaning there's basically something for everyone on the menu (a great place to cater for a group with different preferences). Instead of the usual vegetarian breakfast items or pasta and burger (next time perhaps!), we opted to try a few dishes from their noodle, bento and small items menu which clearly had an Asian influence to them. Dishes that make up this review: Stewed tomato noodles (vegan); V Series's signature Taiwanese tomato broth noodle ($16). Extremely appetising with the sweet and a little sour broth. Bento box (vegan); teriyaki mock chicken served with multigrain rice, spring roll, enoki tempura and pumpkin salad ($18). I wasn't a huge fan of the multigrain rice (perhaps a little too healthy for me hehe...) but the variety and the rest of the bento was delicious. Not normally being a fan of mock meat, I actually did enjoy this and found it to be as close to the real thing as it can be in flavour but not in texture. Green tea soba noodle (vegan); organic Japanese green tea buck wheat noodles tossed with avocado, spinach, kale, goji berries, cashew and sesame seeds ($16). A cold dish with a nice sesame dressing and fresh salad. I didn't personally love the goji berries in the mix (they kind of stick to your teeth) but that aside, I enjoyed the dish and probably will request no goji berries next time. Crispy peking bean curd bun (vegan); Asian style steamed bun stuffed with daikon pickles, cucumber, coriander and peanuts ($10 for 2). The bun was nice and soft even once cooled down (after all the photo taking), the bean curd was crispy and the Peking sauce was delicious. A great combination that surprisingly works. Vegan cupcakes; salted caramel and cheesecake ($5.50 for regular sized and $2.80 for mini). The cheesecake cupcake was definitely a first for me and probably my favourite of the two (I could not tell the difference between the real thing versus vegan). The salted caramel cupcake on the other hand while still tasty and moist, I could tell the texture of the chocolate cupcake was not exactly the same as its non-vegan counterpart. Little Woodpecker is a cute little cafe that only the locals seem to know about - most of the customers appear to be on first name basis with the staff, and everybody is friendly & smiling. With a menu that caters to the major groups of customers (vegan, veggie, GF, etc) you can't really go wrong if you pick this place as a brunch destination! All day Breakfast & Lunch, great variety & yummy flavours (not to mention, totally Instagrammable presentation!), great coffee & smoothie options...what's not to love? Plus it changes with the seasons, so you know everything's fresh & delicious! I came with a friend and we got the shareplate (The Last Supper) which was an AMAZING tapas board with baked eggs, grain salad, falafel, dips, roasted mushrooms, fresh sourdough....man, it was quite the smorgasbord! The shareplate for 2 seemed enough for 3 people to split, because we couldn't eat it all (and we can really pack it in, folks. No namby-pamby nibblers here) Honestly, it seemed like the way to do it, because you got to try a little of everything! If you don't choose to go that way though, don't worry - the serves are all generous & every mouthful is bliss :) Also, before I forget - they also have a countertop CHOC-FULL of freshly baked sweets! I was eying off their orange poppyseed muffins & their Doughnuts/Cronuts/danishes/croissants/omg it all looked so good I can't even list it all So yeah! If you're around, get your butt to Little Woodpecker for an awesome meal!

The string beans were so mushy and had no taste to them, like they were cooked two days prior. In addition to the old and awful food, it was an extremely hot day and they have one small air-conditioner. We asked for it to be turned on and one of the servers joked about how it doesn't work very well and the owner is too cheap to replace it. He was right, even with the aircon on it made little to no difference at all. I ended up having to leave the restaurant early before our meal was finished. I would not recommend this place to anyone and certainly will not be returning. There is better vegetarian food out there.

The chefs are excellent. Try the (non-meat) pork balls, the kung po chicken, the ginger duck, 'spare ribs' (although I find them just a little too 'meaty') - five-thousand year traditional cuisine updated in consideration of environmental and animal issues... and totally delicious! I've tried other vegetarian restaurants but, not usually a fan of Chinese food, this one beats anything I've eaten in Melbourne, in Europe (except a small cellar in Paris, Southbank) or in Shanghai itself. Brought up on Sunday roasts, Monday tea sausages etc., I label this place one of my great food finds.

Compared to what I'd usually eat, not so enjoyable, so I'll have to compare it with other vegan meals I've had and use the comments / opinions of the vegans at the table to guide me. We started off with coffee, they have cow juice for the carnivores :-) so happy with that and vegans all enjoyed their brews. My chickpea burger with chips was on a par with other vegan food I've had, so nothing outstanding here. None of the vegans were raving about their food so let's say good. My kids didn't like the Mac and cheese (not really cheese) so I had to buy more chips as they liked these. The kids also enjoyed their cows milk chocolate milkshakes. Those that had dessert were very happy. It cost $60 for 2 kids and myself, so fairly expensive for what we had. Those of us that had been there before agreed we enjoyed the food better last time, so perhaps it just wasn't their best day today. Will I go back, reluctantly, would the vegans go back, certainly. So if your vegan, definitely give the Powerhouse a go, if not, I'd recommend your journey takes you elsewhere.

I've never had any issues with them in terms of time - just call up and the food is ready to go in about 20 minutes. This is really really good vegetarian food, the sort that thumbs its nose at any kind of meat dish. My favourite dishes are the lentil something, which is creamy despite not actually having cream in it, the spinach cottage cheese thing, and the pumpkin dish (apologies, they have better names than that, but I don't have a menu to hand!). All of their food does that wonderful thing that really good food does when it hits your tongue, that is, the flavours develop and change as you eat it. Yum. It is very rich food, so remember that when you order. Chances are that no matter how much you buy, you'll probably end up with leftovers. They use the chilli terms appropriately, though - medium is actually medium and hot is actually hot. Big thumbs up.
