Its off Legends of Superior Trails (LOST) and its along old US 60 and takes you up to Claypool Tunnel. Dir: From Phoenix head up to Superior along US 60 to the exit for Highway 177, turn left to Ray rd, go through the next intersection and there is a little road for some parking on the right after the intersection. Its about 2.3 miles to Claypool Tunnel. It's the old US 60, construction began in 1919 and opened April of 1922. It was built by prisoners and was nicked named Convent Highway & Million Dollar Highway. Even though this a hike, with some switchbacks to the tunnel and an elevation gain of apx 600 ft. I'd say this is an easy hike but very cool to see. You are walking along history and can see how wide the roads where and how guardrails maybe weren't a thing back in the day and our big cars could never fit 2 on it. Its got some great views too, can check out Superior Bridge, abandon mine and a creek running by. The tunnel is like a walk-in time as well, it of course has been tagged by many, and some even left the year they tagged their name, saw some from 1959, bet you that was the party spot back in the day. It also looks like some mountain climbers put their hooks into the tunnel to climb the top and sides of it. You are exposed to the sun for most the hike, so use your sunscreen! Want to walk back into time, go give this hike a try!

The road construction was ridiculous. Again, a majority of the roads I drove on seemed fine to me. Instead of doing construction in a manner that has the least disruption to drivers, they just close down streets and highways with no alternative routes. Just driving through Superior, there were multiple full stops in the middle of the highway due to "construction." When the stop was opened up to allow a few cars to pass, I saw no construction in action, so who knows what was really going on. Additionally, the town area did not look inviting at all. Run down buildings, poor street signage, and it just did not look like a place I'd want to go. Very few familiar businesses. Not a place I'll be returning.

My grandpa lived here when he was a kid for several years in the 1930's/40's and I've been to visit…read moreseveral times in my life. Over the past few years, the town has changed a bit, and I wouldn't be surprised if it continues to add to its unique culture in the next few years as well. It used to feel like it was in the middle of nowhere and really far from Phoenix, but with the expansion of all the cities in between (Gold Canyon, Mesa, Phoenix itself, etc.), it's really a manageable drive out here. There are a lot of cool shops and even bars/restaurants here now and it seems like they are focusing a lot on the art scene which pairs well with the desert. I'm excited to see what happens here in the next decade, I just hope a lot of the history and spirit of the town remains constant. There's a lot of cool history in the town and my grandpa used to go exploring on the mountain to the East, which is what keeps us coming back every few years.

5/14/26 The small…read moreWestern town of Apache Junction is a short jaunt to my East. It has been and still is a favorite of mine to explore and discover. It's a town that has intentionally resisted progress and trappings of big cities. It still maintains is South Western Cowboy county charm. The town's name harkens from the Early 18th century of indigenous people, Apache tribe; who called this region home. From a time when western settlers and the Apache people and culture collided with European and Mexican settlers. Turning the time clock further back the Spaniard conquistadors traveled from Mexico where they conquered numerous Indigenous tribes in Mexico in their quest for Gold and treasure. Events of Conquest and Culturalal takeover has existed throughout human history. From the tribes of Africa and early man, the Middle East and Southern Europe, the Nords and Vikings and across all Asian empires man had conquered others. Have we leaned from our past and embrace each others as equals? I have hiked throughout the majestic Superstition Mountains (the Sups) from the Weavers Needle trail, Rivas Ranch, and the popular Apache Junction overlook the Sups "Flat Iron". Never during my travels has a hint of the treasures of the Lost Dutchman's mine come to eye, but these mountains have brought me countless memories from the Ancient people's Petroglyphs, amazing wildlife encounters, fellow hikers and backpackers and wonderful camp outs under the stars. Beyond the wonder of the wilderness in Apache Junctions backyard are the fun places you can discover and enjoy in town. There are restaurants from the best BBQ, Mexican fare, country stake houses to more modern comforts of Subway not to forget; all the mom & pop one offs that deserve our attention. I love killing time (Clint Black) in small coffee shops, antique stores, Veterans memorial, VFA, Country music venues to scoot my boots on the dance floor after a great mesquite cooked ribeye. I'm an American (Italia) Jersey shore raised transplant who loves the charm and character of this little town. I have fellow Yelp friends who call this humble town theirs because it still resists anything that resembles big city progress. And for that I solute and patronize their economy or it will be lost to Progress? Not Petty Coat Junction my friends but it's close. Looking for a small town or wilderness adventure my friends-SYOY.

There is a plaque next to the statue that gives you the back story of the man of the mountain and how he came to be known. An interesting and historical piece of art.

We got a giant pumpkin for our toddler to carve when we went on the weekend and there were way too many people for our liking. We came back during the week and it was much better so I would suggest going during the week right when they open at 3pm so you've got plenty of time to enjoy all the festivities. Admission: $12 general admission $10 with donated canned goods $6 for one-day pre-sale Kids 2 and under are free :) Free parking! I love that admission includes so many activities for kids to keep busy for hours. This year they added in a photo booth at the entrance which is so cute to help capture memories - often time it's hard to get a picture of the entire family if one person has to be the photographer so I hope this stays for the years to come! Corn maze, pallet maze, jumpers, train ride, petting zoo, slides, etc. are included. Food for petting zoo ($2) and pony rides ($5) are extra. Some things to keep in mind: They do not enforce mask policies here - you can wear them if you want to. Very dusty from all the dirt so maybe masks would be a good idea :) I would recommend wearing close toed shoes because of all the dirt/dust so you don't end up with brown feet... unless you're into that!
