I've been this place third times while traveled to DC,MD,VA area. My friend know i love spicy food also Mala. I loved this place and miss this place food already. We let her ordered for us because she has been this place a lot and she can speak Chinese either. Dam. Seabass Mala extra spicy (5/5) You can add extra but don't add too much. I recommend add Chinese noodles if you like to eat noodles also slice beef's. Kungpao chicken (3/5) Chicken was so soft but it little different from other restaurants Big clean places but a bit slow service. Some waitresses can speak English. But if you speak Chinese then easy order. Notice that this place parking garage was little weird to me. I never been like this parking place before. You have to call the number for open gate and register or pay from text. When you exit from parking garage then call the number again.

AMAZING!! First time trying Szechuan food and truly nothing that could beat this place. Visited twice (with friends and myself) and overall the experience has always been good both times. Spice levels are exactly where I need them to be (super duper spicy). Would absolutely recommend for a dinner date with family/ friends! Quick service as well :)

We came here for lunch after a workout and we were not disappointed! There's no longer hot pot but the Szechuan style menu was endless. We were even given an iPad that contained pictures of all the food. We ordered scallion pancakes, okra, cucumber salad, tofu soup, and fish. Quantities were huge and everything was delicious. The soup was enough for like 8 people... although I drank most of it. The okra and cucumber salad were probably my favorite items but honestly everything was wonderful. My friends enjoyed the fish. I can't wait to come back!

Wow! Talk about eye candy! Yeah, the food is great but also, when I walked in here my eyes just about popped out of my head taking in all of the beautiful sensory visual experience .... The only bummer is how long I've missed out on this place! I can't believe how many times I saw it from the outside and thought nothing of it. Then, finally, one magical day I said to myself 'I'm going to see what's inside.' -- and I'm so glad I did! Whew! What a relief to find this place now especially when two great local Chinese restaurants have recently closed. I must say, I came here for the floss! The potato floss dish, that is! They have two, actually -- a cold spicy appetizer one and a hot non-spicy (though it can be made spicy!) entree that comes with a bowl of rice. I got the latter ... absolutely delicious beyond belief! I don't know how they do it. It's fantabulous! I did get some chili oil on the side and added that and I must say, the chili oil at this place is like none other I've ever had! I've always loved chili oil since I first tried it but 'complex' or 'varied' is not a word I would have ever used to describe any of it -- until I came here! I don't know what-all is in their chili oil, but it's the best! Definitely more of a complex taste to it, it has -- and it's super-yummy! It's also not very spicy so I didn't have to worry about hurting my tongue or just using a tiny bit, but rather could just slather it all over to my heart's and tongue's content -- which I did! I also tried the mixed veggies and again, they were unlike anything I've had anywhere else -- I mean, at least with that name. These veggies were fan-cy! They were mild and yet, super-duper tasty. One thing I've never liked in my life is water chestnuts (or any chestnuts!) -- until I tried their version! All of a sudden, water chestnuts are my new favourite food! A must have! I can't believe it! They undid my life-long distaste for these things! Sigh .... If there is food trauma and food healing, well, in the past I was traumatized by chestnuts of all kinds and now, I'm healed! I'm cured! I'm in love with this new taste sensation they have leashed upon me! What a relief! Really! I know that sounds silly -- but water chestnuts are in so many things! Now, I don't have to fear those things any longer -- as long, that is, as I am eating them here. Mmm! The jelly dessert is just so delectable, sweet-but-not-too-sweet, slick with crunchy bits atop it -- mmm! (Wait, did I say that already? Yeah, I did!) Our server was super-nice and attentive, and ... I just don't know how to convey to you all the things that added up to make this the absolute perfect meal and experience! It's a great restaurant!

Oh wow. When they said their level of spice was higher than other places they truly meant it. If you are a member of weenie hut jr like myself , but have friends who love that tongue of fire, spicy oils, and craziness.... Well this is a good place for them. For us, go get the coconut water to help ease the pain. The fish and food is delicious though. That fish is totally worth it even with the high spice level.

Food is fresh, service is 10/10, prices are great and we love the overall experience here!

Pretty good with the authenticity of the food, the la zi ji and fish were def the stars. Fish was tender and flavorful and the portion size was pretty generous. La zi ji had good spice, glad they offered to add ma la, wish it was a little crispier tho. Tofu and green beans were a little sweet(?), didn't like that so much but the green beans were cooked well.

My Chinese friend took us here for an early dinner on Sunday. She said it's very authentic middle China food. I got try recipes that I never tried before. The fish pot was very flavorful. And the fish was sliced very thin but still had a slight chewy bite to it which I enjoyed. I'm glad it didn't have any bones. There were big chili peppers. But it wasn't spicy. They were fried well and it was just adding the flavor. The chicken and frog on the other hand didn't have bones which was expected. It came in a very tasty peanut gravy. We ordered a traditional Chinese dessert with jelly, some syrup and dried fruits that included raisins. It wasn't too sweet but refreshing. The service was fast. The atmosphere was fancy and inviting. The staff were courteous. It checks all the boxes. Definitely try it for some authentic food.

Fatty beef sour soup + miao jia sour fish pot

I came here on a Sunday around 5 pm and it was pretty much empty. I didn't really know what I was expecting when I came here other than Chinese food, but this was probably one of the best more authentic Chinese restaurants I've been to (mind you that the only Chinese restaurants I've really been to on a regular basis are the Americanized ones)! We started with some of the cold jelly in sweet soup dessert which was good - although it came in a plastic container. The jelly along with the brown sugar, sesame seeds, and dried fruit was really good. It was sweet, but everything meshed together well. We also had the durian charpati, which tasted great with the durian inside the charpati, which was cooked perfectly. It had a nice salty and sweet balance to the cooked dough, and the durian filling was soft and tasty. For the main course, I had the fatty beef sour soup and miao jia sour fish pot with rice. The sour fish pot had such a terrific flavour - it was tangy and I could taste different things as I continued eating it. Not too salty either. The white fish went well with it. I really loved the beef soup, the beef tasted fatty and soft, with a small spicy taste to it. There were a lot of bean sprouts and other veggies in it too. A variety of small flavours in the soup too that works well with the beef. The meats in both were soft but still cooked enough that the texture was still crispy in a sense. Got rice refills as needed. One pot definitely can fill up two people. Our waitress was very nice too, coming to help us whenever it was needed and spoke in both Mandarin and English which was useful for my party. I really enjoyed my time here and would come again; I was impressed by the taste and flavour of the food. I really don't get why reviews are so bad here, but maybe there's something I'm missing since I'm not that knowledgeable about this kind of cuisine. Or maybe I just came when it was super empty so they didn't have to rush anything.

Pretty authentic food , great service! Just a little inconvenience for parking you have to call at parking lot to open the gate , 2 hours free parking .

I have to say I truly enjoy this place. They have an hot pot options there but I never try it and went with ordering off the menu instead 1. Lobster dish was good 2. Chicken and frog was good but had more chicken than frog 3. Frog was deep fry

The spicy whole fish was good. Fresh fish and good flavor. It's pretty expensive (around $60) but the portion is large. Their soup dumplings were mediocre--skin was too thick

Was feeling hangry because I had planned on stopping at Hard Times for a bowl of chili -and found out they were closed on Mondays. So, pretty much pulled a name out of a hat and would up at Chuan Tian Xia because, well, Szechuan cooking uses chiles, no? Yesssss! I ordered Signature Dumplings and a bowl of Beijing-style Beijing-style Zhajiang Noodles. The dumplings were outstanding: a mix of shrimp, pork, and chive that were plump, juicy, fragrant with the herbaceous flavor of chives. The accompanying sauce was not too sweet, not too hot, just right as a complement to the dumplings. Yowza. I was a happy camper... ...and then I dug into my noodles. Double yowza! Thick wheat noodles topped with a rich sauce made from (I think) fermented soybean paste and braised pork belly, garnished with cucumbers. The portion was way to big for me to eat after my flight, but I really, really enjoyed it (and the remaining dumplings) for lunch today. Did I say yowza? I'm an adventurous eater so the menu's less Americanized items were what I would have ordered given more time (like Maoxuewang: can you say "pig's tongue, spam, pork intestine, and beef tripe"? Protein is protein, baby!). Just means I need to come back, and I will, as quickly as I can.

It's usually packed with Asian folks who come for A&J's dim sum-style food. The food is described as "Northern style" Chinese, and it's definitely not Americanized. I've eaten many a bowl of noodles here, but my favorites are the Dan Dan Mian (with hot spicy sesame sauce and peanuts) and Xue Cai Ro Si Mian (shredded pork and mustard green noodle soup). I've also enjoyed Ma La Er Si (sliced pigs ears with hot and spicy seasoning) and Pi Dan Dou Fu (tofu with Thousand Year Egg) - things I doubt will EVER show up on a menu in my hometown. And the dumplings: oh my. I think I've tried them all, and haven't found one yet I wouldn't order again. The only downside to A&J (besides it being a drive for me) is their cash-only policy. Fortunately there are lots of nearby ATMs, but beware if it's your first visit. Prices are very reasonable and portions are perfect, so overall value is great. If you haven't been, go now, and work your way through the menu. Trust me, you'll thank me!

I have kept this place in the back of my mind, with fond memories, however, have not visited in some years due to multiple moves around the country. Recently, my friend was organizing a casual gathering for our friend group, and asked ChatGPT if there were any good recommendations for food in the area that was affordable and delicious, and A&J came up as a top choice. So I came back to A&J after almost 10 years, and the food was just as good as I remembered. The decor remained simple and unchanged, but this is very typical of Asian restaurants. The menu was large, and it's easy to order by circling items you want on the paper menu. We had a mix of noodle soup bowls (so many different flavors and styles) and appetizers, and everything we tried was delicious. Our bill came out to less than $25 per person with tip. I could imagine more pretentious Chinese restaurants downtown upcharging a lot more for lower quality Chinese food (Queen's English, for example). It was so good and affordable, that I actually ended up coming back the next day with a different friend. Overall, excellent experience, and I will be back again soon! One interesting tidbit, my coworker who grew up in the Midwest and only eats meat, potatoes, absolutely no vegetables, started going here for lunch and loves it. I think flour-based items (noodles, dumplings, buns) are really the star of the restaurant, and this can be enjoyed across different taste palates! I hope you will give this place a try.

We arrived right when they opened around 11 AM on a weekend and were seated immediately since it wasn't too busy yet. One thing to note is that the entire party needs to be present before being seated, which they enforce, but it helps keep things moving smoothly once you're inside. The service felt traditional and efficient, with attentive push carts circulating constantly, making it easy to see what's fresh and grab dishes as they come by. The staff were also accommodating with a baby seat, which made the visit comfortable for families. The steamed cart is always my favorite, and Far East does it well. Standouts for me were the shrimp rice crepe (silky and delicate), shrimp dumplings (har gow) with plump, juicy filling, and the steamed ribs, which were tender and flavorful. The chicken feet and tripe were also well prepared -- classic dim sum staples done right. I also loved the sticky rice, which was fragrant and satisfying, along with two must-order bakery items: the pineapple buns and egg tarts. Both were fresh and comforting, with the egg tarts having that perfect balance of flaky crust and smooth custard. Overall, Far East delivers a solid, traditional dim sum experience -- lively carts, reliable favorites, and a welcoming environment for groups and families. Great spot to gather, share dishes, and enjoy a relaxed weekend dim sum meal. Definitely glad to have seating back again.

Far East is a longtime staple in the DMV food scene, having been in operation since 1974. I was a few times a year patron leading up to 2019, and the last time I was there was in 2023. During my 2023 visit, the place was showing it's age with dingy matted carpeting and cramped dining room. Against my better judgement, I made the trek into Rockville to meet up with some folks for Sunday dim sum. IMHO, while it's true at one point, VA dim sum was inferior to it's MD siblings across the river, I'd say there are plenty of comparable if not BETTER places in VA. Our group was large (15), so we had to dine at two tables, as the largest table could only accomodate12. And note, for dim sum, Far East does not seat incomplete parties, so everyone arrive early. Also note, if you do choose to dine here, the parking lot is fairly small - but there is additional parking towards the back past the dumpsters. My recollection from 2023, was the selection of dishes was quite limited, and the 3-4 ladies who were pushing the steam carts, were peddling the same items over and over. That experience has not changed in 3 yrs. Upon sitting, our hungry group ordered dishes of shrimp dumplings (har gow), shumai, tofu rolls, rice rolls w/shrimp and beef, etc. Everything was fine; but nothing really stood out. The items were lukewarm, and cooled within a few minutes of being passed around the Lazy Susan. To me anyway, I found many of the dishes to be underseasoned...and when does a person characterize Chinese food as not being SALTY enough? The table chili oil was also quite bland. There was a good mix of fried chilis combined with oil, but there was just a hint of spice/heat with the predominant flavor being a heavy greasiness. Perhaps the worst part of the experience was the service. Even accepting that Chinese restaurants are notorious for "providing" legendary bad service, Far East exceeded that reputation. I understand that it was Sunday and the place was busy, but it took over 10 minutes for water and tea to arrive. And a few times, I literally had to get up from the table to flag down servers to refill empty water glasses and tea pots. Piles of dirty dishes kept piling up to the point where a few of us, took them to the bussers and food runners ourselves to make space for new dishes at the table. However, the worst incident was at the end when the servers and what I assume was the manager, rushed us to pay the bill since they needed the table, one of the staff was hurriedly cleaning the table, and spilled an entire glass of ice water on my friend's dress! He didn't even apologize, and when she went to complain to the manager, the only thing he said was, "it's only water, it will wash out." Wow! even by Chinese restaurant standards, that's bad!!! When the bill arrived, the total came out to roughly $35/person with tax and tip (gratuity is already included for larger parties, so be sure to double-check the bill). The meal was definitely NOT worth the $35, and for that amount, I could've had a much better and filling meal at Peter Chang Herndon - https://www.yelp.com/biz/peter-chang-herndon?osq=Peter+Chang This will undoubtedly be the last time I travel to Montgomery County for dim sum...and especially to Far East Restaurant.

A solid spot for sharing with a group, and I'd happily return to explore more of the menu. I really wanted to love this place. The soup dumplings are among the better ones in the area. While the wrappers aren't as thin or chewy as the very best, you can tell they're handmade, and I'll always appreciate that. I'd recommend sticking with the pork soup dumplings since they were rich, savory, and full of umami. The crab version unfortunately didn't have any noticeable crab flavor and tasted almost identical to the pork. The duck came in a generous portion and is a great choice for anyone who enjoys sweeter flavors. The watercress was fresh and plentiful, but it could have used much more garlic. We ended up adding the wonton chili oil and dipping it for extra flavor. The cucumber was delicious, but the portion was way too small. The bean curd was cooked well, though there wasn't enough pork for a dish that was supposed to feature it. The fish was another highlight with light spice, a crispy exterior, and perfectly cooked, tender meat. Overall, I'd definitely come back to try more dishes. Very traditional Chinese interior,…read moreservice was simply ordering and bill, and the food is something I'll be thinking about got the next few days... sijidou -sichuan green beans: I don't know what they put in this - and was honestly very skeptical at first - but it was a huge flavor bomb and I ended up liking it a lot more than I expected. suancaiyu sour fish: this restaurant does the dish very well. The portions are huge and the sourness is on point. ziranyang cumin lamb - extremely tender lamb; it was super super cumin forward. Big fan of cumin personally but will say also a little on the overwhelming side if you didn't stagger it with rice Fuqifeipian cold tripe and beef - very solid cold appetizer. Would love more of the chili oil they put in this. Not too spicy but very aromatic's Overall made a super big impression on me asa first meal in Rockville. Coming from the west coast where it's predominantly canto food I really enjoyed how well season everything was. We will be going back especially for the beans
