"The moon is big and yellow And the stars are all a' glow…read moreFrom the bridge, I see reflections In the waters far below" (Dolly Parton) The Upper Sheffield Covered Bridge was built in 1999 as close to a stick-by-stick replacement (as close as modern engineering standards would allow) of the original 1832 bridge that was destroyed in a fire in 1994. Some materials salvaged from the original bridge were used for continuity. It's a nice example of "One Span Town Lattice Truss" open construction with a wood plank floor and wood siding painted grey. No vehicles are permitted on the 93-foot-long bridge that spans the Housatonic River. I read that the original 1832 bridge was the oldest covered bridge in Massachusetts and one of the oldest Town lattice truss bridges in the U. S. There's an information kiosk with vital information about the history and restoration of the bridge. There's a parking lot and a little park where you can access the bridge, and a hiking trail at the other end of the bridge, It's a very peaceful place to stop, take a stroll, enjoy the construction of the bridge and a nice water view at the park.

Since moving to CT, we discovered a great program that gives a little incentive for visiting a…read morenumber of CT state parks, the DEEP Sky's The Limit Program. In 2017, Topsmead was among the parks listed, so we decided to go give it a visit. Winter was not the best time to visit, and it's hard to give it a really good/fair rating. The main farmhouse area was closed for the season, and the weather wasn't really great for hiking. It would be a great spot for cross country skiing in the winter, though. The outstanding negative at the time of our visit were the state of the toilets. They're pit toilets, which is fine, but they were not dug at all deeply, and if not for the freezing weather, I can imagine it would be rather unpleasantly fragrant. We'll definitely be visiting again and reevaluating at some point.

He was born on this site on August 11, 1865 to James Wallace Pinchot and Mary Jane Eno; his maternal grandparents were natives of Simsbury. Gifford Pinchot was founder and first president of the Society of American Foresters, served President Theodore Roosevelt as the first Chief of the USDA Forest Service, with his family helped establish the Yale School of Forestry, became Pennsylvania's Commissioner of Forestry, was a principal in creating the National association of State Foresters, and was a two-term Governor of Pennsylvania. Dedication August 11, 2000 In the centennial year of the founding of the society of American Foresters, and on the one-hundred and thirty-fifth anniversary of his birth, this monument is dedicated to the memory and legacy of this pioneering forester. Does anyone know who keeps up the paint job? Probably, it's a small town, but no one is jumping forward to take credit. It's all part of the mystery. One woman in Florida says she and her siblings started Frog Rock (originally Monster Rock) in 1948, and now he has two little Frog Rock friends watching the cars go by with him. It's a very cute landmark, just be careful and pull over to the opposite side of the road if you wish to see it!

There is also an herb garden outside, and an apple tree grown based on the teachings of Benjamin Franklin. Apparently having fruit took more than a grocery store way back when. The house is very interesting to experience. Everything was smaller back then, and cooking was a task and a half. The employees/docents are obviously learned about their subjects, and you'll learn a lot. Definitely check out their special programs - parking may be a challenge (so carpool!) but if they're food related they'll be delicious.

The Kent Soldiers' Monument is one of the earliest, unveiled in 1886 (though dated 1885). It stands…read moreon a traffic island in the center of the road in Kent where Main Street (State Route 7) meets Bridge Street / Maple Street. The monument was originally in the center of the intersection but was moved a few feet when the road was widened and so it remains in the center. Facing to the northeast, the inscription reads "Erected by the People of Kent, 1885" and "A tribute of honor and gratitude to her citizens who fought for liberty and union, 1861-1865". It is a simple obelisk though rather tall at 30 feet (10 meters). As it's in the center of the intersection, I think it's at risk for a traffic collision but who am I to say? It's for those fallen from this area from World War 1, World War 2, Vietnam and the Kirean War. I've driven by here hundreds upon hundreds of times without even noticing it on the green at Baldwin Park. If you're in the area a quick prayer or stop by to pay your respects.

This stark and solemn marker remembers August 19, 1955 - the day the Still River and Mad River…read morerampaged through Winsted and killed eight people. Across the state, eighty-seven perished from the flood. The freak flood resulted from the combination of hurricanes Connie and Diane which ripped through the state and dumped between 13 and 20 inches of rain in a 2-day period. The resulting flood is still the worst natural disaster in the recorded history of Connecticut. The marker is located in the town green where Main Street (Route 44) intersects with Park Place (Route 8). The green is a busy place, with all sorts of other markers, monuments, and memorials everywhere. It was dedicated by the Winsted Chamber of Commerce one year after the flood - on August 19, 1956.
