But by far our favorite evening was spent on the banks of the Duro river, drinking wine and ordering small plates of food at Wine Quay Bar. We got really lucky to get a primo spot overlooking the Douro at the wine bar; it was picture perfect. With the help of the server we ordered a Douro Valley wine - a dry, fruity white. It was tastilicious. This place had an all appetizer menu -- like tapas in Spain. We had olives, a sublime soft sheep's milk cheese, bread, sardines in tomato sauce and pigs feet ... indescribably succulent, all of it. This place is a no-brainer for some of the most amazing food and wine in one of the most beautiful places one could enjoy them.

How ignorant! There's so many! The port I know and love are the aged Tawny ports. Another category is called Ruby, and they're the juicier, sweeter redder ones: very delicate, not much wood flavour. They talked about the Vintage and Late Bottle Vintage (LBV) for the Ruby ports. There's also white ports, and they can be dry or sweet and are generally served as an apéritif. There's also colheitas which are single year Tawny ports from a really good year, which needs to be announced by the governing body. Really neat stuff. Definitely a high bar for wine standards. You can do 3 or 6 samples, 30 cl each, in either the base level or the more premium stuff. I did the tasting of 6 premium ones. The atmosphere isn't the most spacious or comfortable but you're not there for that, you're there for the port! They show all the bottles with the glasses so you can read them and take your time experiencing them and comparing them. It was a really great experience and I would highly recommend it to get a proper port experience.

They have flights, including one that's 15 euros where you let them know what you're looking for and they pick out the 3 bottles, which is very neat. I told them I was in Porto mainly to try Port wines, and didn't have much familiarity with other, non-fortified Portuguese wines, and would love an intro flight, but no roses. Got a mini-lesson in the wine regions of Portugal, along with a wonderful green wine, a great Duoro valley red, and a truly fantastic red from Alentejo, a wine region I had not previously heard of, but immediately went on my radar the rest of the trip. (They also sell bottles; I bought a bottle.) Note, they said they only guarantee they'll do flights (as opposed to full-priced full glass pours) after 4 pm, but if they aren't busy for the food lunch rush, they'll do them earlier in the day (on a rainy Thursday in January they were more than happy to.) Actually liked the place so much, I came back the next afternoon and had another glass of a different Alentejo red - they only had one open for tasting in the price range that fit the "intro"-priced wine flight, so I spent... I believe 11 euros on a glass of a fancier bottle they recommended. It was also quite good, though I think I actually preferred the first one. Also had one glass of a very reasonably priced tawny Port while I was there - they had several, but obviously, I was already well into my plan to taste Port directly from all of the nearby tasting rooms across the bridge, so I just picked one here. Stop by Base on your next trip to Porto!…read more It is located at the top of a hill in the center of a beautifully maintained park right near the famous bookstore. I was so excited to go to Base after doing a ton of research online but as our luck would have it, it poured rain the whole time we were in Porto. They were closed so we didn't get to have a drink here. All of the tables are outdoor so try and hit it on a nice day if you can. Hopefully I can try it someday!
