As I live in Australia my sister dealt with most of the correspondence with Jim. When I did arrive for the funeral he was so easy to deal with and took so much pressure off the family. Archibald Sharp is an attractive looking estate agents on Dumbarton Road. (I probably only think…read morethat it's attractive because it's painted a red/pink colour. But there you go...) As well as being an estate agent, it's also a solicitors office. Although this is more than a little bit confusing - I suppose that it would be useful?! They actually have two offices along Dumbarton Road, next door but one to each other. Which kind of adds to the confusion really! Anyway, the offices are nicely done out and welcoming, and the staff seem to be really nice. They also have a good selection of properties for sale and for rent - so it's well worth checking out their windows if you're in the market for some property.

They have a great range of properties for sale or for rent, and their full range can be seen on their website. Appointments to see properties can usually be made on the same day, and the agents themselves are very personable and knowledgeable about the properties. They didn't even mind when our Sat Nav sent us a crazy route around the West End and we were ten minutes late for our appointment - oops! Their flats are generally well presented and not too over-priced - although they do generally offer a fairly high class of properties. As they are an agency, if you do want to go ahead with their properties you have to pay for a credit-check etc which is quite expensive - but this is the case with most places now.

Bill arrived on time and he just got on with it-unobtrusively and passionately. We had 50 viewers within a week and many had commented on his work and this had certainly enticed them to come and take a look. Craig went above and beyond as an estate agent-it did not matter what times the viewing were, He was available to chat, give feedback, offer support and guide us regarding closing dates and discussions with viewers. I wonder if he ever slept! And it felt like it was just our property that he was focusing on although we know that was not the case. The result: an offer 20K above our home report plus 10 other offers on the table. All of this for 0.5% commission is more than reasonable. If you want a personalised, professional and proactive service go with these guys. They were recommended through a friend and we have been recommending them to anyone who asks.

Mixed experience, reliable in some areas, lacking in others…read moreAs a landlord, I've had a very mixed experience. Focusing on 5 keys areas I care about: 1. Tenant Sourcing & Vetting This has been the weakest area. Tenant searches take too long, often stretching into months (70 days in average), and it doesn't seem like the property is actively being marketed. It feels like not much effort is being made. 2. Rent Collection & Financial Management No complaints here. Rent is collected reliably, and the online system is easy to use for tracking payments and accessing statements. It's been smooth. 3. Maintenance & Repairs Some expenses feel avoidable, like sending a handyman multiple times instead of resolving issues in one visit. They often use their in-house handyman, and it sometimes feels more about profit than practicality. However, scheduled maintenance is done properly. 4. Legal Compliance & Documentation This area is handled well. Certifications and documentation are always up to date, which gives peace of mind and reflects good professionalism. 5. Communication & Transparency Responses are timely and professional. Communication is steady and courteous, which I appreciate, but there's room for more initiative. In summary, be prepared to lose 2-3 months rent per property per year, however once managed everything is great.

Highlights include being left without a working boiler in December for 2 weeks, being over-charged for my rent, being threatened with eviction due to utterly unreasonable neighbour complaints (even the police sided with me) and having £270 withheld from my deposit for absolutely no reason (I got it back but only after a phone marathon with the credit department). If you end up going with the company, you best put the number in your speed dial. Many of the staff are very rude and some are about as useless as a fireman's helmet made out of chocolate. I was once told, by a manager no less, that he was happy to take my email details but that I should not expect to receive a reply as "I will most likely lose it". My friends have had equally nightmarish encounters. Personal highlights include the chap who called to say that the roof was leaking onto his plug and was advised to move the computer while he had to wait 8 days for someone to come and fix the problem. Textbook. If you think I am exaggerating, just ask the Student Representative Council at the University of Glasgow. They have awarded Grant Management the prize of Worst Letting Agent in Glasgow on more than one occasion. As flats go, Grant Management do have some great properties in some prime locations but no matter how nice the place is it will not be worth the side-order of gross incompetence.
Grant Management is a bad memory, one I've tried to push to the back of my mind, but every so often…read moresomething reminds me of it and I find myself livid that I've had to think about it again. The flat I lived in that was managed by this horrible company was actually in Stirling, but this is the office we dealt with. They continuously cancelled on our viewings and eventual lease-signing dates. When we finally got one set up, the guy was 40 minutes late and claimed to be stuck in traffic - we'd all just driven through from Glasgow on the same roads. It seems like they're in the business of getting one over on students, as he looked embarrassed when he saw that we'd brought my parents to help look over the lease terms. The whole year with them was a disaster. After tons of issues with miscellaneous things, they began rounds of calls, asking for feedback. When we didn't answer, they'd keep calling. When we did answer and declined, they kept calling. Once they called me at 7am. When I finally answered and took the damn survey and gave them 1s out of 10 for customer service, speed of repairs, reliability, and so forth, the woman got really cranky and hung up on me. What do they expect?! Oh, not to mention the astronomical fee of £250 when my flatmate's direct debit wasn't set up properly (their mistake) and they didn't get his rent in time. Honestly. Basically, I've heard similar stories to mine from everyone who's ever so much as heard of Grant Management. Frankly I have no idea why they're still in business. Beware!

I'd like to think this was not me being especially dumb, but the shop front being rather inoffensive. No matter, this has been to date the only estate agent from which I have bought a flat. Indeed, up until the day I moved into my newly purchased flat I had no idea where this was. Rather worrying, I know. Anyway, I was working from 8am-6pm (8pm on Thursday) in two jobs, seven days a week for about a fortnight a few summers ago; to cover some lucky devil of a boss who'd left and not bothered to hire any extra staff. As you can imagine, this made it extremely difficult to continue my property hunt and I ended up doing most of it through an old (and quite smelly) yellow pages and the work's telephone. Therefore, I was ecstatic when a lovely woman from here called me up. She'd spoken to me earlier in the week and kept a hold of my details. Which - unlike many estate agents - she'd actually bothered to use when something matching my specifications came in. So, from my limited experience I would give this place a major thumbs up. They were very polite, helpful and managed to do everything over the phone. They also kept my details and actually used them. Additionally, they were also good enough to talk the seller into giving me an 8pm viewing on a rather nice June evening due to my hectic work schedule. Small, but perfectly capable of pulling punches well above their estate agent weight.

Over this time we had a number of issues with the flat, ranging from no running water in the kitchen to a leaking window. Both this issues took up to 4 weeks to be resolved (which the agent argued was within a "reasonable time"). I cannot argue with this but the constant calling and emailing them looking for updates along with the fact that in the mean time no temporary fixes were put in place left us with a very bad experience of CLS and certainly will not be recommending them to ANYONE. I should also point out that many of our reported issues went ignored. We had an electrical issue which almost resulted in a heater catching fire (luckily I was in the flat at the time and smelt the burning plastic.) I emailed pictures of the half melted plug and informed the agent. Nothing was done. It was a similar story with very strong gaseous smells coming from the bathroom (on two occasions, the odour was bad enough to wake us up in the middle of the night). Numerous calls resulted in us being fobbed off. Again nothing was done. Steer clear.

Furthermore, it's going to be trickier than any flat hunting I've done before. We've in the business of finding a very cheap, semi-decent West End (ish) located one bed or studio flat. Oh, and we need a letting agency that will accept his DHS payments along with my part-time work/study and continuously temporary job status. This is not an easy task. While it clearly doesn't look like much (particularly compared to the shiny, new Lets Direct next door) it is very friendly, personable and completely people orientated.
