Of the two (this one and Bartholomeu), we preferred the latter -- but if you have two nights in town I would definitely suggest trying them both; can't go wrong with either one. Brazilians dine relatively late, so if you arrive at either one in the 6:00-to-7:00 range there is no need for reservations.

You start off with a bread basket and homemade butter with herbs and they had lots of English music playing on the speakers throughout the night. That butter though. Try at least one of the many caipirinha or caipiroska varieties for 12-14 reais each. I tried the maracuja com gengibre (passion fruit/ginger) and maracuja com manjericão (passion fruit/basil) and loved both of them. If you're a foreigner ie non-Brazilian, let them know if you prefer more or less cachaça in your caipirinha to get the drink of your taste. Vegetarian dishes are very sparse here, though my waitress did mention they had a veggie risotto that wasn't on the menu and they may have others as well. They are mostly known for their seafood dishes. I enjoyed my filet with gorgonzola sauce too. The restaurant is al fresco with a covered roof. Some of the tables are in the sand, so you can feel like you're on the beach even though you're a few steps away from the sounds of the waves crashing in. All around, a great experience and not so in your face of a tourist trap like the beachfront restaurants.

This is Tripadvisor country (so far), a fact I'm doing my best to remedy. This though, is how I came to discover Caminho do Ouro. Having no Yelp to consult I'd had an awful meal elsewhere days earlier. I was determined that situation not be repeated so, against my nature, I scoured Tripadvisor. There, Caminho do Ouro is a (possibly "the") top-rated Paraty restaurant. On a rain-soaked evening my son and I found Caminho do Ouro in the town's historic district. As we entered, the only other diners there were departing. Apart from the workers, we had the entire restaurant to ourselves which seems like a crime given the quality of what this kitchen produces. A Tripadvisor reviewer had noted that his only complaint about the place was how quiet/sedate the restaurant was so I'm hoping this isn't a trend. Based upon my single visit I think this restaurant deserves to be packed. Between the two of us we consumed a filet mignon entree served alongside a creamy polenta and a shrimp risotto entree. There were so many "oohs", "aahs", and "mmmms" coming from my table that I'm rethinking things: perhaps it was a good thing the restaurant was empty. This food - the beef especially - inspired my son and I to both remark, weeks after the fact, that we wish we could go back and repeat that meal. We're still wishing. Caminho do Ouro is a quietly elegant, artful restaurant serving positively luscious food. If you're looking for an evening meal in Paraty - perhaps a romantic spot for 2 - you can stop looking. Located at a gorgeous lookout along Prainha beach, Mirante da Praia offers a great caipirinha along with some seafood and staple Brazilian snacks. The drive from Rio is relatively easy and will take you about 40 min to an hour by car. Once you leave Rio, you're mostly driving along the coast, so the beaches you'll pass along the way are picture-perfect. While fish is the thing, our table didn't really enjoy ours. It came out slightly raw and rather unimpressive in flavor. The shrimp pastels were excellent and the fried yuca was nice too. This place is ideal for an afternoon gazing upon the water, eating a shrimp pastel and drinking a caipirinha.
