This church fits all the worst-possible stereotypes of a "box" church…read more The building itself is a big cinder block behemoth; the main area of worship is essentially a giant auditorium with rows of identical seats, a massive, bare stage, and totally bare walls. The architecture is more like a Wal-Mart than a church, and it is totally devoid of artistic content as well as homey elements that would make a person feel comfortable or relaxed. The service is incredibly long and incredibly boring. There are no fewer than THREE sermons, each of which is unusually long for a sermon, and none of which gave me any meaningful insight into anything. The only thing that I remember about the sermons is the one preacher stating: "I mean, this God stuff is real. This isn't like make-believe stuff." Honestly? He didn't sound convinced himself...it was as if he was trying to convince himself that God really existed...and I don't blame him because going to a church like this could cause someone to develop serious doubts about whether there really is a loving God. The music? Really bad, pop-influenced, sappy, empty Christian praise music. There is no harmony--which is probably due to the fact that no one attending this church would have the skill or talent to able to sing in harmony. The words to the songs are meaningless...there is no depth or complexity to them. I found it utterly painful to sit through. Many members of the congregation raise their hands and sway back and forth to the God-awful music. There is a sort of cult-like mentality to this congregation. Everyone is happy and friendly but in a shallow, conformist way. As a plus, I did not encounter any outright hateful or negative messages from this church...but at the same time, there was nothing to ensure or prove to me that there were no negative or hateful elements lying beneath the surface. The theology, overall, was heavily fundamentalist and simplistic, based on the idea of "accepting Jesus as your savior" without ever talking about what Jesus actually taught or what He stands for. From my experience, churches with this mentality will often have rather severe homophobia and often other forms of bigotry masked beneath the surface of good feelings and smiling faces. I found it interesting to visit this church...as I would have never imagined that a church like this could exist. I can say one good thing about this church--it lives up to its name. Attending this church certainly shattered my worldview...to realize that churches like this actually exist and people (and massive numbers of them) happily attend them required me to drastically adjust the way I look at the world. The problem is, I'm not sure this change is for the better...overall it was a rather disturbing realization that made me look more cynically on Christianity and on humanity as a whole. I would be very happy if I never set foot in a church like this ever again, and I would recommend those who want to have a positive view of human nature and religion in particular to avoid this church like the plague.

A relationship with God is deeply personal and has nothing to do with how 'cool' a church is…read moredecorated... (how EVER to people tolerate going to 'church' in third world countries! UGH!) ...or how AMAZING a singer is (Dove Award singers only please!!!)... if you're not there for the RIGHT reasons and allow your spirit to be fed with SOMETHING from visiting with other believers...then you're there to judge and people bash. It's not about the bricks and mortar. It's not even about the PEOPLE! It's the walk and relationship. That simple. And. Anyone or any negative review of a CHURCH with anything less than "they stole from me" or "the pastor punched me in the face" is kindaaa a little missing the point that that PERSONAL pursuit of worshiping God is...personal. If it's not for you, and you're looking for something different....then you gently acknowledge that you need something different the next week. Geesh. And Christians are supposed to be the judgemental ones.

I visited the historic St. James Roman Catholic Church in Lakewood on Sunday, 6 October 2024 for a…read morecomplimentary piano performance by Jakob Aumiller. The piano performance was beautiful and it lasted for an hour. There was a 10 minute intermission in the middle. Afterwards, the church had a reception in the basement which included tea and sweets (brownies, cookies, mini cupcakes) and popcorn. I got to meet the musician who is German but studied in Italy for his Masters (or maybe Bachelor's) degree. I met some lovely people at the piano performance. I had wonderful conversations with a woman and her parents after the performance. I also had a nice conversation with a young woman who sat behind me during the performance. I will try to make it to the next free concert series. I attended a Sunday service on the last Sunday of April (2 weeks before Mother's Day). A former co-worker had invited me so I decided to attend. The church is a small Christian church but a great benefit of that is it is easier to meet people and get connected. Members consist mostly of Case Western University students but there is also a good mix of non-students such as young adults, middle-aged, and a few Senior citizens. I would say average age is 30. If you have kids, there is a kids ministry as well. The service includes worship music, a sermon (message from the Pastor), and prayer time. Although I attend another church, I'm excited to attend this church's "dinner party" soon. Their dinner parties are held across the city in several of some church member's homes. It isn't a bible study but just a fun way to hang out with friends and have dinner. Since my former co-workers hosts one of those dinner parties, I will be attending at some point later this summer. If you're a student or live in the University Circle area then I recommend this church for the intimacy (small size) and awesome teaching of God's word. **** This is my 111th Yelp review overall. 65 reviews for 2018. I was visiting from out of town and wanted to go to church and luckily found this one in my google…read moresearch. As we were walking up we were greeted very kindly at the door. Proceeding into the lobby some of the ladies there noticed I was knew and went out of their way to greet me and even offered to sit next to me. How sweet and thoughtful! As soon as we walked into the main auditorium you could just feel the Holy Spirit and the genuine care/compassion the pastor and its members had. The worship experience was incredible and I was moved to tears. After worship some of the leaders came on stage to talk about upcoming outreach events/opportunities and WOW! This church's heart for the community was beyond words. You could feel Jesus' love in their mission. This church embodies loving your neighbor as yourself. The sermon preached had so many relatable notes and was all backed up and explained through scripture. I only wish I lived in Cleveland so I could go every weekend. If you're looking for a church, look no further! The TRUE word is brought and the community could not be any kinder or carry the heart of Jesus any better. I am thankful God put this church in my path.
