Because I have a chronic condition that affects many different areas in my body, I require a lot of specialized medical care. I have seen positions in many departments and I have had testing done in several areas. While I have experienced a couple of bad eggs, the vast majority of the MetroHealth positions, nurses, and other medical providers have been professional, excellent at doing their jobs, and compassionate. Let's face it - healthcare is a tough industry to work in and being a patient isn't exactly a piece of cake either. The pandemic only made it harder. However, I have consistently received good care (as has my spouse) regardless.

My best friend told me to go to Cleveland Clinic because they are an amazing hospital and won't dismiss me. I finally decided to take the drive (over an hour) and was diagnosed with Guillian Barre Syndrome-which turned into Chronic Inflammatory Demyletating Polynueropathy (a condition that slowly and painfully paralyzes your entire body). I was there close to a year and they began treatment right away and helped me learn how to use my hands again. The physical and occupational therapy teams are truly AMAZING. The nurses and doctors are absolutely wonderful and extremely informative. I'm very grateful for everything they have done for me and how much they have helped me.

The fresh choices always get my attention. Most hospital's cafeterias are full of canned vegetables and applesauce... bravo! Thank you for the great work lunches. I've now had to take off 2 days of work and I just keep waiting and waiting with no real answer. My guess is they're trying to milk the insurance company for all they can. Despicable. I was exceptionally please with Dr. Hannah Jarvis (hospitalist) - truly an outstanding individual who clearly explained what was going on with me in terminology I could understand. Nurse Jo on Hannah House 3rd floor was also terrific (as were the other staff on 3rd floor that checked in on me!). Kudos to you all - my wife, daughter, and I were all grateful your outstanding care and attention to my medical crises.

First, there was no safe way for someone like my sister, who walks with a walker due to a leg impairment, to get into the building from the parking lot. The building door from the parking lot can only be reached by walking down four or five stairs. There were no wheelchairs, no outside elevators, or even medical staff to assist patients and/or their family members to get into the building. Further, there was no sign directing visitors to a different door if the visitor is disabled. There is a ramp on the side of the building that is so steep I was afraid to attempt to help my sister walk on it with her walker without risking her or me falling. Instead, my sister insisted she could take her time and walk down the stairs. However, before reaching the top of the stairs (after walking from the parking lot) my sister passed out. I began yelling at the top of my lungs for help. Several kind people in the immediate vicinity came to help me. We called 911 and they revived my sister. I called the doctor's office in the medical building on my cell to inform them we would be late to the appointment. My sister needed to see the doctor because the doctor's office had already canceled two prior appointments through no fault of ours. However, without taking this into account the receptionist immediately responded that since my sister would now be late for that day's appointment, we had to reschedule. This was after I had explained to her why we were delayed getting into the building. During this entire ordeal, from the time that we arrived at the building not one medical staff member came to help us. After all this, my sister was also denied from seeing the doctor. I am writing this review because this cannot be the only time that a near tragedy has occurred at this medical facility due to an utter lack of care and concern for patients. If anyone ever has the misfortune to have an appointment at this place, please be aware of the neglect in responsibility that this facility has to its patients in the community.

But let's face it; the reality of things is that suicide is almost as common in our lives as drug overdoses. With this being said, let me set the scene of one of many struggles someone suffering from a mental illness faces. During the month of December, my oldest sibling attempted suicide twice within a 3 week time period. The second attempt, leading them to Lutheran ...my sibling used to be a drug addict & then switched to becoming an alcoholic. And yes, she had been drinking on this particular evening- so much so that a 911 dispatcher & his friends at the local bar drove her to this hospital. We were told that she should have died from the amount she had consumed alone. This attachment of mine, also happens to be bi-polar (stage 3/4 if I remember correctly) & cannot afford her medication(s). Even so, if you drink massive amounts of booze while on anti-depressants it cancels it out. I realize that the staff at all hospitals are overwhelmed with this exact type of patient. That they do not have the proper facilities nor tools to effectively deal with mentally disturbed patients. I do not blame them for this. However, when my sibling was dropped off; the gentlemen who took her there clearly explained to the staff that she had been talking about killing herself, had a plan,etc... she still had visible injuries from the first attempt and from the second attempt prior to arriving at the bar. Unfortunately, the staff automatically dismissed this information. They ignored the dispatchers concerns and the information that my parents provided about the first attempt & her mental illness. The staff just assumed it was another alcoholic and refused to keep her for the required 3 days of observation. They discharged her the next morning; never providing her with a psychological evaluation. Never calling her counselor or providing her with her medication. She didn't even have a ride home; just kicked her out of the room and could care less. They NEVER did their job!!!! Every hospital is required to detain a failed suicide attempt for 72 hours! Not less than 12. Thankfully my sibling did not make a 3rd attempt, but what if she had? Could you imagine loosing someone to suicide knowing it might have been prevented if the staff had done their job. I called their patient experience/concerns hotline on 12/23/18, left a message & heard nothing back-ever. Know matter how many times I called & left voice mails - til this day not one person has responded to me. This only show you a very, very small fraction of how hard it is to get help. With all of these suicides going on- have you ever stopped to consider how many of those individuals did seek help and were unsuccessful? The cost of a rehabilitation center I looked into was over $5,000 just for a down payment. Another $15,000 upon the arrival of the intervention group that would assess my sister and an additional $20,000 for a week stay at their rehab facility.This did not include all of the expenses either. The hospital did nothing! The suicide prevention hotline she called for help after the first attempt- stated they had a bed available & then immediately hung up on her! What do you do when every attempt at "life" is taken from you? If you or someone you know needs help, don't take them here. I called the Cuyahoga Mobile Crisis Clinic (216) 623-6888- they were the only people who took the time to listen, and truly help.
