But that 20 minute drive turned into 80 minutes when my wife or I had to drop our daughter off at catechism then pick her up again. After a year of that, it was time to take the plunge and make St. John Vianney our new parish. One thing about this parish is that they want you to participate. Unlike OLG, catechism isn't drop off. It's parent participation. And the little ones, I'm talking 5 and 2 year olds, have a daycare there, too, so they participate as well. As much as my wife and I were hesitant about this parent participation stuff, we actually enjoy it. In fact, it has brought us, as a family, closer, both to each other and to the Church. Becky is just great and she was soooo kind to let my little ones participate in the children's Christmas mass as shepherds. Monsignor Tim is a great homilist and is welcoming and transparent, especially with regards to the failings of the church recently with all the scandals. He extends a welcome to all who believe, not just those who conform; that means all are welcome regardless of sexual orientation; divorce or past experience. Fr. Egren has a passion to bring out the passion in the parishioners and a penchant for the dramatic with his Christmas presentation and the upcoming veneration of St. John Vianney's heart. Fr. James, who is also a physician, brings insight into Asian perspectives and challenges in non-Christian countries. The parishioners themselves, are so welcoming and understanding, especially when you have four little ones like I do. And there is a sense of belonging that you just have to experience for yourself to truly understand. My two little boys have a sense of comfort in attending mass and just enjoying the church. After all, it's God's home and He wants us to feel comfortable in His home. Sure, there are those who have complained that the church is too sterile or not as traditional, but the building does not make the church. The people do. Personally, I like the simplicity of it all. Parking can be a bit of challenge or frustration, so go early to get a spot or park on the field and walk a little... And I read the comments about those who can't understand the priest due to his accent. But that is no reason not to attend nor a reason to complain. You get out of mass what you put in to it. To better understand the mass and any celebrant, literally or figuratively, I suggest viewing Bishop Barron's series on the Mass. This parish has been through a lot with the burning of the old church and the fund raising and building of the new one. But through it all, it has proven to be a wonderful place of worship and a welcoming community of parishioners.

Although this church treated me with open arms, at some point there was too much politics and stress between members at this generational church. There are Chinese, English, and Spanish services. English and Spanish services are upstairs. When I attended, they had a huge conflict between the English and Chinese congregations. There were a lot of politics at this church. Although I have since left the church, my faith and spiritual well-being took a hard hit from all those issues. Just know that this church predominantly Chinese speaking. Most people that attend the English services are high school - college age. I think most of them are children of the Chinese speaking congregants. The Spanish congregation is a separate congregation that rents out the church building. Just a quick note for those seeking an LGBTQ affirming church: This church is not affirming of LGBTQ relationships and was actively involved in the Proposition 8 campaign.

Years ago, this church was known as Family Church when Pastor Dave Ansell was leading. Back then, it truly felt like a family church in every sense of the word. Life took me in a different direction, and over time my faith drifted. Recently, I've been searching again, and that Sunday felt like it mattered. It felt like the day I was supposed to come back. We arrived excited, as a family, ready to worship together. As we walked in, I considered checking our kids in, but my younger children have never really been away from their mother and were not ready. Instead of forcing them, we made the decision to stay together as a family and attend service. That's when things immediately felt off. We were directed away from the main auditorium and told to go upstairs into a separate room to watch the service on a TV. It felt isolating and honestly like a punishment for having children. Worship is supposed to be about unity, not separation. Trying to make the best of it, we went back downstairs to enter the main auditorium. That's when we were stopped. My wife explained that our children are well-behaved and would not cause a disruption. An older gentleman then stepped forward and said, "We don't allow kids in here." We were turned away, in front of others, with our children standing there. It was embarrassing, disheartening, and honestly shocking. I couldn't help but think of Matthew 19:14, "Let the little children come to me... and do not hinder them." I also thought about the message every church promotes: "Come as you are" and "All are welcome." That is not what we experienced. We were redirected, restricted, and ultimately rejected. This church once felt like a place where families belonged. When it was Family Church, it truly lived up to that name. Since then, it has been rebranded multiple times and is now called Boundless Church. Ironically, the first thing we experienced were boundaries. This was a moment that mattered for me and my family. It could have been a turning point in reconnecting with faith and community. Instead, we left feeling like we did not belong. Very disappointing experience.

Right now, we are going through a 6 week study on the Book of Mark and seeing what Christianity is really about. So if you want to know what Christianity really is and not what google or the news says, then come visit at 9:15am At 10:30am, that is the official service time with the whole church. What to expect here is the preaching of God's Word. In short, that is explaining the text of the Bible and explaining Who God is from The Bible. There will be some singing as well. Cause Church is the absolute best church. I truly don't know where my family and I would be without…read moreit. I have gone through so much trauma and pain in my childhood, my family, and my life. I have also struggled with my own brokenness and the ways I have hurt others and made mistakes along the way. Over the years, I have come to Cause Church again and again feeling broken and facing some of the hardest circumstances of my life. Every time, I have found support, encouragement, grace, and help beyond what I can describe. The church offers amazing programs for people recovering from family dysfunction, addiction, and other life challenges. They have prayer teams, an Inner Healing Ministry, and so many opportunities to find support and community. Most importantly, it is here that I have truly come to know Christ as my Lord and Savior. I have been, and continue to be, supported and carried by God's grace through people who genuinely love Jesus and faithfully serve Him. I am incredibly grateful for our church, our pastors, and all the volunteers who pour so much love and care into others. Cause Church has been a tremendous blessing in my life, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
