Opened in 1985, Grace's Marketplace is a family owns supermarket filled to the brim with delectable foods and ingredients. D'Artagnan's Green Circle chicken is sold here and I like to pick up the chicken thighs. I also got a cat slice of Ricotta Salata here. A variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared foods, cheeses and pastas are all sold here. There is also a bakery section with all kinds of goodies. Their location on East 66th Street translates into higher prices but one can get good deals if one takes time to look at everything. I always do. Grocery shopping often makes me hungry and here there is a counter table with stools where one can order from a full menu. I wish more supermarkets adopted this. The employees here are warm, friendly and willing to help one look for an item. Whenever I am in this neighborhood I like to pop in to see what's new, on sale or a special. read more

I usually love Grace's, but a few bits need some improvement. We pre-ordered a holiday meal review: - Pre-cooked Turkey: excellent! 10-12lb bird is huge. Serves at least 6, prob 8. - Matzoh Ball soup: avoid. The soup was tasteless (use as a broth to steam rice?) the matzoh balls were impenetrable and inedible. :( - Gefilte fish: also tasteless, disappointing. We tossed the gf and mb's. - Challah bread: Buy it fresh somewhere else. The loaf is huge but is bland and dry. - Latkes: excellent potato pancakes - perfect size (2"), we used a carbon steel pan to crisp them up. Would order 2x next time. - Gravy: aces. Wow - Graces market place is such a welcome stop off when on the upper east side. Just west and south by a few blocks from Morton Williams - but so much here to enjoy. More of a semi gourmet market than a grocery. Because I saw olive oils, caviar and a cheese shop - nicer than local bakery area - it definitely was a few steps up from other local places. Happy tp be here and pick up some things. Now have a new appreciation for where Graces in Carle Place comes from. Same group and some similarities- like the fill your pwn olive oil dispenser - But no bottle - and didn't want one when saw it was Greek Olive oil - good but must be from Italy! Around the bend two shelves with various bottled olive oils - from Sicily and other premium olive oil regions. Love the slices of cakes snd kino and full sized cakes - could really have fun here. Grace's Market has been in this location for Seven, YES Marianne, Seven years. Where have I been. I used to go to the old location on Third Avenue. I passed this location a while back and just returned today to go inside and get a real close look at everything. This market is absolutely beautiful and huge. They have everything you could possibly want. I got lost in here and wondered if I would need help finding my way out. Every employee I spoke to was so nice. They have many employees in the aisle stocking up. Everything about the store and the employees is professional, clean and neat. If I lived nearby I'd shop here all the time. It's a little to far to carry my groceries. When I need a special item or a treat I'll be sure to return. There's plenty of seating outside where I can enjoy a coffee and brunch. This place is place is honestly a little gem! Stopped by here for lunch last week and sat by the counter by the chef. I got their grilled artichoke salad, lamb chops, and panna cotta for dessert. The chef did an amazing job cooking the lamb to the perfect temperature (I got medium rare)--it was sooo flavorful, tender, and juicy. The panna cotta is made fresh on the spot and was so delicious. My experience with Grace's catering service was next to lousy and 100% anxiety producing. I ordered 3 items by phone. I asked for help with quantity. I got little guidance and the catering person said he thought I was figuring things out right. Told I would get an email confirmation. After a few days of not getting the confirmation, I decided to walk over. They could not find the order. After a 15 min search, the order was found under a different delivery date. When I saw the items I ordered on their order sheet, I saw that the recommended quantity per person was much different than my actual order. I picked up the food today. Missing one item. Told they don't sell that item. I asked for a receipt. Took 15 min to get a strange looking receipt that doesn't get printed on the store's letterhead. There is no store name, no itemization of food, looks like it could be from anywhere. I told the person helping me with my food pick up that I expected more from Grace's and that I was very underwhelmed with the service over last few weeks. I got a blank stare and the most patronizing "thank you" with a great big eye roll. Underneath, she was saying to herself, I need this like a hole in the head. Poor customer service with regard to catering during holiday time. Post note: glad to say the food was delicious and was thoroughly enjoyed by the family. read more

I'll start with the positives. The food at the counter is amazing. Definitely 5/5 no doubt. Tried a variety of things, always 5/5. However, the grocery should be avoided. Not sure what happened. Several times recently the bread I got there was mouldy. Some of the other groceries are absurdly overpriced compared to similar items elsewhere, others are ok but will not be returning for the groceries anymore. Just the food at the counter. read more

Tight aisles, curt service, and high prices. None of that is really objectionable here; however, it is the clientele that Grace's seems to attract that repels me every time... They are generally a loud, rude, entitled, and pushy bunch. These are the type of people who are oblivious to (or/and could care less about) holding up a long line at the prepared foods counter. For example, they insist that the clerk show them every single one of the neatly stacked 50 chicken cutlets, so that they can choose the tiniest and best-looking piece among them all. And who cares if it takes half an hour and the clerk has to reassemble the display while everyone waits?! A fascinating sociological question is why do I rarely notice the same behavior elsewhere. You don't encounter shoppers like this at Citarella or Butterfield's, or at the local Whole Foods or D'Agostino. People are generally very polite and friendly. For similar or better produce and prepared foods, it is much more pleasurable to trek elsewhere--again, at no fault of Grace's itself. read more

I have had delivery a few times from Grace's using Mercato. I am very pleased. While they are more expensive than other places, the quality of everything they sell is the highest. The homemade potato salad is the best I have since The Store in Amagansett, likewise the Three Bean Salad. Even their clementines are better than anyone else's. This grocery store is small but nice. It was a bit empty between 3 and 4pm on a rainy Saturday and although I was in a bit of a rush, I was able to walk around a bit without bumping into too many customers. The store is a tad clustered. There wasn't (that I could notice) any clear indication as to where holds what so come prepared to browse the entire store to locate what you're looking for, if it isn't at the front in the fruit and veg area. The workers had a very laid back attitude and there were small clusters of them gather at various points just chatting. I noticed seafood, cheeses, organic, Jewish and some usually hard to find food items. There's a deli, a bakery, and what looked like a wine area (but I didn't walk to that section. It also looks as though there's a separate dining area but I didn't walk over there either. I'll try to visit again when I'm not too busy and pay closer attention so that I can give a more informed review. The fruits I bought were really fresh (as though just picked) and yummy. Everything is super fresh and delicious. I bought a large box of pre cut watermelon and it was delicious so refreshing cold and sweet. I also bought the Japanese Avocado Rolls and California Rolls They we're so light and fresh. Graces deli can be a little pricey the Japanese rolls were $6.99 per box of rolls but the extra dollar or two you spend there is worth it because of the high quality of the food. Graces counter in NYC is the best find!!!! Freshly prepared food by an incredible chef.the appetizers are excellent. I love the Roasted head of cauliflower with chipotle aoili. seasalt edamame with a sriracha sauce is excellent. All the fish is fresh cut from the market, and prepared any way you like. If you are a person of color and want the florist to chase you down in the store panicked that you're going to steal $20 flowers from them, then this is the store for you! I went in this evening solely to purchase the flowers for my 5 year old daughter. While I wasn't aware I had to purchase them first before shopping (that part I will own), I most certainly and fortunately am not someone who would ever or has ever felt they needed to steal anything. The florist followed me in the store, panicked, to take the flowers from me. I asked him he thought I was stealing them, and he didn't answer. I left the store to get cash and return to have a polite but honest conversation. I gave him the money and asked for the flowers and then I asked him "I need to know, did you think I was going to steal the flowers?" He wouldn't respond. I asked again. Then he said "I don't speak English. I don't understand," Well I told him I know that isn't true because I've been to the store before and have interacted with him. I repeated "Did you think I was going to walk out of the store without paying?" He then said "If you don't want to buy the flowers, you don't have to." I said, "No, I want the flowers but I also want you to honestly tell me did you think I was stealing them. And I know you understand everything I am saying." He refused to answer. I gave him the money and then I went to speak with the manager while my daughter waited with my friend outside. The manager "kind of "apologized and said he would talk to the guy and that "it was his approach." No, no. If it was strictly a policy matter the guy could easily have said he didn't think I was stealing. No apology and no real action. I live in the neighborhood and have for many, many years. Needless to say I won't be shopping here again. The interaction with the florist was unacceptable, even by New York standards, and while the manager was semi-sympathetic he was largely unfazed and offered a mechanical response. I don't think there is anything they can really do to make this right as they've shown their hand and probably still wrote me off as a thieving brown person -- but I want to at least put this out there. The florist and manager were people of color themselves but that doesn't mean much - plenty of POC working in retail environments are frequent racial profilers. I am deeply disappointed, though. Let's start with what's admittedly phenomenal about this place: (1) The produce is always fresh. Many times I had trekked over to my beloved Trader Joe's and schlepped the haul back only to find, upon opening something, a layer of rot and mold. Nothing is more frustrating than finding that beautiful apple speckled with grey fuzz (... other than leaping down stairs and smashing past people only for the subway doors slam in your face). (2) Everything looks beautiful. Seriously. If it were possible to get full simply by looking at the cheeses, prepared foods, and snacks on display. And whoever does the stacking has managed the impossible for a New York City grocer - there's actually enough space to walk around and look at things without toppling over a gingerly stacked tower of goods. (3) I once bought an impeccable square of kugel and whittled away at it for over a week, unwilling to eat more than a few small bites at a time because it was just that good and also about $6 (more on that later). When the parts that I saved for last (i.e., the crispy brown parts near the edges) started taking on a sourish taste, I felt more than just a twinge of sorrow. The downsides: (1) HOLY HELL, how are the things so overpriced here. I would stop in a bodega and then come here, only to be amazed by how the same brands like yogurts and chips were almost double the price. (2) Everyone I've ever interacted with here was having a bad day. The lady manning the nuts selection? Horrible day. The guys overseeing the prepared foods? Glaring at me. The cashiers? Scowling and looking noticeably impatient as I was trying to swipe my card (only to realize the machine needed to read the chip instead). I tried to place a catering order with Grace's Marketplace. Their website was well designed, and it seemed they had everything I was looking for. I called last Saturday to place the order for Tuesday. I was told to call back Monday, as the staff wasn't on site on Saturday. First the gentleman told me to call after 10 on Monday, then changed to after 11. I called at 11:30 on Monday, and was told to call after noon, as the catering manager wasn't in yet. I left my number--no call back. I called again at 12:30, and was told catering was closed that day, as the manager had gone home sick. When I said I needed something for the next day, they put someone on the phone, who was unhelpful and nasty. At that point, I lost all confidence that they would deliver, and was uninterested in doing business with such an unprofessional operation. Fortunately, Zabar's saved the day. read more

Today I noticed workers handing food and serving food were not wearing a mask or gloves. I politely asked the manager Frank if it was recommended or required that workers handling food,serving food, and speaking to customers can wear a mask. I tried the coffee bar for the first time this morning. I asked for a medium size latte and was told there would be two shots of espresso in it. The latte came out tasting totally like milk, zero coffee flavor. It also cost about over $5. So I went back to the barista lady and kindly asked if I could get another shot of espresso since the drink had zero flavor. She seemed annoyed and reluctantly made me another shot. After handing it to me she charged me another $2.50 for the extra shot. Fine, no problem, I handed her my credit card. I added the extra shot to my drink and still it tasted like warm milk. Yuck. Not exactly the sort of morning drink I was going for. So in the end, this morning latte cost me eight dollars and tasted like regular milk that had been heated up. Sorry to say I cannot recommend this place at all for your morning coffee. you'd be far better off at Le Pain down the street where the lattes are delicious and have some robustness to them. I recently purchased the turkey breast from the prepared foods area, it was overcooked- dry and cut with the grain, not good. when I brought it to the mangers attention he was not accommodating in the slightest. Had a discussion with store manager Philip and was promised a return phone call - it never happened. Tried calling for a sixth time to be placed on hold once again and once again, the call dropped. Horrible customer service. Do bother to waste your time. Instead, place an order with Chelsea Market Baskets. Who doesn't like a nice bougie grocery store? Sadly, there was little to like here. Everything was overpriced, even simple produce. I thought that, since this store was pretty highbrow, they'd make good sushi. Nope! I got the spicy tuna roll here, and it was a waste of money. Found this place searching on Yelp for "breakfast." We have been coming here for lunch, but decided to check out their groceries today. The market is clean and presentation is nice, two traits I think should be required for every respectable grocery - they are signs that customers are valued. I love the food court feel of this place. It's fun walking around to the different stands for cheese, pastries, meats, fish. I especially like the dining area - the reason I come here. They have a cute little Expresso bar are in front of the store for customers to sit and sip. I was impressed with the cleanliness and quality of the seafood here. ( I have been to half a dozen groceries and find this one to pay much attention to this.) The slices were thick and you can tell that the fish was not thawed as the oils were still. I especially like that they carry non-traditional, specialty produce and spices as well. Bonus! I will be back here to try their lunch next.. read more

Who expected a diner counter for about 12 in the middle of the neighborhood gourmet supermarket? Every seat taken in the middle of the week. Locals all enjoying very good food cooked right in front of you. Better than home cooking and cheaper than most of the fancy restaurants around the neighborhood. The customers all chatted with other.
