This place is terrible. they have terrible medical care. You come out sicker than got in.

Please do not admit your loved one here. There is absolutely NO PERSONAL care given here. Every patient is treated exactly the same whether they have allergies, eating disorder, throwing up, truly psychotic or simply depressed - everyone is put in a dismal room and given the same food and little to no care. They could care less if your loved one eats or not. Their ONLY concern is not being sued for suicides. THATS IT! They barely allow anything in, even if its something completely safe and can bring your loved one comfort. We tried to take our daughter home the next day, but they claimed they have a 72 hr hold rule ("for their safety and proper assesment"). Which means - a room with bed close to the ground, all white walls, tiny window, COMMUNITY SHOWERS, NO PRIVACY, NOTHING showing comfort or compassion. Noisy staff and patients. My daughters room was next to a solitary room with a shower. That patient ran her shower for hours, causing the water to come into my daughters room. She woke up to cold wet floors!! If your loved one is suffering through a psychiatric emergency - bring them to an emergency room only IF you have no other option - BUT OPT FOR OUT PATIENT CARE!! Once you choose to have them admitted - you are stuck with 72 hrs of careless almost torturous care. I cannot believe Asylum-like care of this level still exist today, let alone in NYC! For the love of humanity - do better!!! Americans with mental health issues should be comforted and made better - not worse!! There is a reason why phones/cameras are not allowed and its definitely not for the patients safety . read more

I was a patient in this hospital in 1989-90. It was ok then. They tried but I wasn't ready at the time. The Dr and nurses took good care of me. I don't know about now . It was a long time ago. I was a wild 22 yr old kid wild and knew it all. I can't say it was all bad . read more

My husband was recently transferred and hospitalized at Gracie for attempted suicide. He was assigned to 5th Floor geriatric/asian unit. Everyone was so kind and supportive as well as professional. The nurses were wonderful and patient with my husband. Dr.Lasoutakis was my husband's psychiatrist and I cannot thank him enough for his efforts in helping him through this difficult time and his dedication to providing him the best possible treatment. Crystal Lopez was his social worker and also was vital in his care and her support meant so much I have been a registered nurse for many years and so I think I can give a fair assessment of what I witnessed there during his 2 weeks. read more

My mother and I had passed this place going to dinner and later that night she started getting really upset and anxious and needed a doctor. I called the police 4 times for an ambulance bc no one inside the hospital on the same block would help and the restaurant was closed. read more

There is no care offered in Gracie Square hospital. I had such horrific experience that it took me a very long time to write this review and I still cannot go into details in this forum. If my dog was treated the way patients are treated in Gracie Square, I would be furious. I have no words for the kinds of thing that the nurses and staff members do to patients in Gracie Square. I wrote down their names thinking I would report the illegal things they did to patients, but no one was interested because Gracie Square will always be hell on earth and they have no desire to change that. There was no therapy, no groups, no books, no form of entertainment except for one television for which the staff chose what we watched, often putting on the news to remind us that the outside world is still moving while we're stuck in this dirty hospital where, when fights break out between patients, other patients need to step in to stop the fight as the staff members simply were not interested in keeping patients safe. I had a psychiatrist who would come to my room, tell me "we're keeping you an extra week," and then walk out with me running behind her asking questions. She didn't change my meds or offer new ones, she really did nothing at all. Her name is Dr. Nahla Maghoub. She is the meanest psychiatrist I've ever met, and she did absolutely nothing to help me. A nurse named Shatika Smith was especially cruel. I would have written down all the staff members who treated me badly but I literally couldn't keep up and they refused to allow me to use a pen for a while. read more

I have been trying to reach my inpatient wife for over 5 weeks and am hung up immediately for no reason. I am also refused visiting privileges similarly. This place is run like the Gestapo. Patients are annoyed with Black television programming and no accommodation is made to change the channel. The doctors raise medication levels and it made my wife worse instead of leaving the medicine protocol alone. This place should be shutdown and reported to the New York State Mental Health authorities. This so-called hospital deserves zero (0) stars or better, negative. read more

I was at Gracie Hospital in the past year, due to a suicide attempt. I was there 10 days, out of which therapy teams were not available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. When therapy teams did meet with patients on Monday through Thursday, patients got only about 5 minutes to talk with them. In those 5 minutes, totaling about 45 minutes in 10 days, they diagnosed me as depressed and "encouraged" me to take anti depressant medicine. Encouraged- meaning, that I would not be discharged unless I took the medicine daily. It took a few days to get my medicine that was prescribed for a medical issue. Very boring, not enough activities. I got to talking to other patients who were very unhappy there. They are not helpful at all. read more

I was there from 2/2/22 for a week due to Bipolar and some Neurological issues . It has improved its overall well being now. I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Prateek jain . the social worker wasn't that great though and management is bad. Security not sure abt I lost my ring there. the management is bad but the doctors are very good and knowledgable. its affiliated to Cornell doctors. but after coming out I didn't get the help that was needed the social worker was bad and didn't help me much when it came to scheduling next appt. Still waiting for further consults. The nurse assistant ganchup was really nice. I might go there again as I am having some Neurosurgery issues. I have Trigeminal Neuralgia and was treated there nicely. some of the nurses are very rude and would advise to stay away from them just stick to people you like and make friends there. read more

I got Haldoled and put in a private room for asking for an mp3 player after midnight. Samantha lied in my report that I spit on her, though we made up later. That got me a night alone bruised in the rubber room, stuck with haldol which I'm allergic too (booty or arm?? How nice! There is an inch long scratch from where they suddenly seized me from behind). Vivian the head evening nurse was nice but needs an effing vacation because she does everything alone, including talk to you about feelings. Michael who looks like a Beatle was nice and literally volunteered to run groups he didn't have to. Daniel Jackie and other sweet people are on the staff as nurse's aids. The social workers Ramsay and Kate are literally there to just dress nice. They are the most condescending people I have ever met. If you have any fantasy of being a social worker have at it, because this is a haven for you to open your heart. Nobody else will do it. Nurses. I was told by a tall black nurse with smooth pulled back hair, about 6 foot tall on the night shift, that I besmirched the Earth with my personality and was a disgrace. Maybe she didn't like me? Same lady said that if I didn't watch my mouth a patient would punch me. A dude who was there was like I'D PUNCH YOU IF I WERE A GIRL. Nobody was like, "This isn't professional right now." Punching good. Hugs bad. Usually they just COMPLETELY ignore you and type through your words or calls. An older Philipina lady who I THOUGHT was nice works in the far right corner told me she hated my clothes and threw a glass of water directly into this one girl's face because she was floridly manic. Mr. Ola let me use his phone for a SSDI appointment because literally none of the other social workers would, and locked up the day room where the pay phones were, oops. By the way I am a school assistant soooooo, not a rude person by nature, and I am used to administrative complexity but the nurses, social workers, and doctors DO NOT collaborate. Rounds are 10 seconds per day, and if you disagree with anything they say they are over immediately. Never try to greet your doctor in the hallway. Ask for permission for EVERYTHING, ask the nurses what the doctors want if they like you. You will be TRAPPED once you get in. If you want a real meeting with doctors, get a family meeting. Mine were cut short when they found 2 benadryl in my sock I brought (untouched, and my meds every night: klonopin, trazodone on the reg, and then ativan, haldol, zyprexa, abilify, benadryl, atarax as needed). Dr. Geller (head of the unit, whom for some reason is above the power of being switched out to another doctor) denied my a referral to an outpatient program OR seeing my mom. My lawyer was also restricted (liiiiike because she could bring me benadryl???)? I was sent home with a bottle of klonopin. I'm an ex addict. Then the worst thing. Worst. I came voluntarily asking for DBT, a very selective and hard to get treatment for "borderline personality disorder." The reason many people with this condition enter hospitals, to get on the DBT track - But social worker Ramsey didn't call this mysterious unnamed program. Didn't call. I was like are you sure. It's 6/13. Mt. Sina's the only medicaid DBT program. Ramsay's like no. I can get you in. Literally didn't call until 6/27 my discharge date. First I was told I had to relinquish voluntary status. Oops. They were still in a bad mood. They said if I was compliant and took Zyprexa and Abilify and whatnot, they'd consider it. Sadism. Crying. My lawyer is like they don't have DBT here. Finally, 6/27, she calls. Columbia Doctor's VOICE MESSAGE says they don't take medicaid. She lies and said she called but they denied me for being too something. Then she admits it. Never called. Sorry you feel disappointed by this. We couldn't find you another program these past two weeks. Bye. Thanks for the cool wristbands dudes. By the way I say, as a patient who entered with hypomania (slightly elevated good mood - maybe!), no depression, no nothing, just whistling. I spent two weeks there. Despite this mood, I was told I had to go to court unless I tore up my 72 hour request for release and would risk being kept 6 months. Before my mom called hospital PR and an hour later BYE. Another problem I will say - this place has a special relationship with the medication ZYPREXA. This is the LEAST healthy of the antipsychotics and everyone is on them. As a momly person staff said it was ok for me to comfort patients and once ask them to take meds. I DON'T think ZYPREXA or this hospital's aggressive approach to floridly manic patients works. Stay away from this Hospital if at all possible!!!!! The nursing staff is nice but young and under-trained. The physicians are arrogant and self-absorbed; completely unwilling to deal with the family in a collaborative manner. They don't even communicate with the patient's outside physician. If the mission is to keep you from physically harming yourself then I think it is passable for the moment. If it is in the hopes of getting better with doctors that actually care about you hold off for another facility. This is not that place for any long term help or expertise. There are no support programs nor inhouse extertise of any type in house. How did Dr Rosen become a Dr? The daily 15-20 mins sessions with Dr. Rosen consist of him asking if I was going to hurt myself or anyone else. Once a negative answer was given, he would start looking at his phone straight away without any shame; didnt even have the respect to feign partial engagement. He knew he was in a position of power and chose to abuse it. Classic petty official syndrone. WHen it was time for us to take a decision to rescinde the 72 hour voluntary admission, he (Rosen) literally threatened to keep us in there on an involuntary basis with the use of lawyers IF we didnt sign... then he simply left; we were forced to decide within the hour. When we asked to see him to clarify, he would not come out of the office citing that "he said all he had to say" . .. that was after our 10 min meeting with the social worker. Even the nurses were shocked. How do these people get to be in charge of vunerable people? If you are a parent, spouse or friend that is calm and not vunerable, he simply wont speak with you. The security is a joke. You have violent and explosive patients mixed in the mood disorder floor. When a fight broke out, the security guard in the room who was face timing his girlfriend watched the fight escalate with a excited smile until the nurses rushed in. He was actually a thrilled spectator waiting for action. Another male patient was more helpful and intervened to the disappointment of the security guard. We later found out that this was never documented and was hesitantly documented only the day after. That violent patient was subsequently given additional drugs and assigned a personal nurse to keep her out of trouble. This is why things need to be documented - one slippage could lead to another patient being abused / traumatised or actually being hit by the chair that was nearly thrown in the argument. Kate the social worker was helpful to get us out, however the follow up plan was not ideal, this is more of a NYC system thing. Maggie the nurse was the real super star. She really cares about patients and is smart making calls that are pragmatic and non subjective. We hope she doesnt get jaded in NYC. Gracie and their patients are lucky to have her. I know not everyone can afford high quality health care, but once you are in the NYC system, you feel threatened by the " Dr" Rosens - types who abuse power and obviously don't care about patients, and are subjected to overworked well intentioned nurses and social workers. While this place may keep you alive, it may leave you scarred in many other ways. - If you have a choice you should avoid this place. For family and friends, if your loved one is there, dont panic but brace yourself... you are there to support your loved one... try to be there physically (bring food) as much as possible, and know who the assigned nurse is that is looking after your person. Be cordial or neutral to any patients that approachs you while you are there as ultimately it is your family member who may suffer after you leave for the evening. Know the phone numbers to call in and make your loved one has your numbers to call you if they need to. Then.... work on a plan for a better place. read more

I give it one star because they fed my daughter. Last month she was there for a week. We requested a family meet before her release. I didn't hear back and next thing I know is she is txting saying I'm on my way home. She came home saying she never saw a therapist and spent 15 minutes a day (week days only) with the psychiatrist. This may or may not be true. We can't know because we were not given the family meeting. They put her on a medication which they said was working - and so did she. She came home, said the place is a joke. The medication didn't help and I'm not filling the prescription. She said the doctors said there is nothing wrong with me. The doctors didn't see through her act. She wanted out and she outsmarted them. No set up with outpatient psychiatrist or therapist. She is saying the same things and behaving the same way as before she went in. Shame on them! They failed her!!Someone with a mental illness outsmarted someone with a medical degree who specializes in mental illness. Ha! Licenses should be taken away. read more

Visited my friend on the 2nd floor several times. Place was clean, staff friendly and helpful and food good. Doctors listened and tried to help my friend and fallow up outpatient care was aRanged for before release. We had experience with other hospital before and This was by far a better facility for psychiatric patients. read more

Can I give this a ZERO? Gracie Square is why people fear mental health facilities. It is the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest that we fear. It is everything that is wrong with mental health care in America encapsulated in one depressing, awful place. Overmedication. Managing patients, not treating them. Ignoring the input of parents and family members. No windows. Fox news BLASTING in the commons area. One evening, we called the doctor on call for a medicine side effect and not only did he yell at us, I seriously thought a homeless person had broken into the unit (no offense to homeless people). THIS was the doctor??? The ONLY good thing about that hell hole was the music therapist. She is kind and musical and wonderfully engaged a broad range of patients. Be careful if you go to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center Psych ER and they send your loved one to Gracie. Seriously NYP/WCM you can't improve that place? But RUN the other direction.DO not go there as it will be hard to get them out of this hell hole and to transfer them. The only other "good" thing about this place is you will end up with a malpractice lawsuit. read more

Christine, the music therapist is the one saving grace of this hospital. Love her, love her, and she knows how to play the piano extremely well, and is very creative with her music therapy, which is a godsend especially since they don't allow electronics in psych wards. The food is above that of Bellevue's but below that of NYP's. The doctors are stuck in the 1950s so far I think, stuck in the monoamine hypothesis of depression and psychosis. I kept on trying to talk about state of the art models like oscillatory models of GPCR circuits and dendritic spine pruning (for schizophrenia) but no one wanted to listen, apparently. One of the nurses on the 5th floor (her name is Chelsea, I think?) used to work in Van der Kolk's Trauma Center in Boston and made me feel quite safe and made me feel not so stuck in the 1950s. I have pretty bad PTSD from child abuse. The phones are able to call long distance (out of state) -- another saving grace of this hospital. I think it's not a bad hospital if you can get a good doctor. I discharged myself by going to court and advocating for myself. The hospital is understaffed, especially with regard to the social workers and doctors, but not with regards to the patient aides. read more

I want to spread an awareness that this is a really unstable psychiatric ward. I , my visitors and my fellow patients were treated with tremendous disrespect. We were made to feel like we were insane and that we were a tremendous bother on the staff to get our basic needs met. They kept making excuses that they were understaffed and tomorrow would be different, they kept making up stories and when we wanted to follow up with their story, their shift changed and we could not get our needs met or anyone to believe us. It was a lonely and painful experience. I am only writing a review so that this should be known and perhaps we can change whats going on in there. I am suffering from severe trauma from my experience and I feel for all my fellow patients that I left behind locked doors. read more

I was going threw the hiring process at this hospital and before I could finish I witnessed rude unprofessional work practices higher ups talking down to other staff . We had took a tour threw the hospital and it was very scary like a scene from American Horror. The patients was just walking around not engaged with any activities. No daylight available. I have made a yelp account solely for a warning others of the psychiatric hospital. I was going through a depressive episode and decided to check myself in in an effort to save myself, adjust medications and get away for a while. Little did I know what I was getting into. I'll start by saying I know no place is going to be perfect, and of course there are bad apples here and there. That being said this place as a whole is toxic to anyone with a mental illness. They put me on the wrong floor and would not move me. I belong on mood disorders and ended up on the psychosis floor, with no one to relate to and treatment NOT tailored to my needs. Basically on this floor they make sure the patients are alive, and that's about it. The staff do not listen to the patients needs empathetically, and instead verbally abuse them in front of others. They would not let me get my clothes from downstairs for days. I was in tears telling them I needed new underwear after 3 days, sitting in menstrual blood. They dismissed me coldly until I complained to a head nurse. (A bald gentleman, he was really kind.) The head doctor, I'm not sure what her name was - she was an elderly African American woman - was power tripping and honestly terrified me. I came to her and told her what happened and that I'd like to check myself out. She responded, "we can do this the easy way or the difficult way." She made it clear she has the power to declare me sane or not in order to let me leave, and told me to stop complaining. On top of this, several of the rooms had no bathroom and patients were forced to use a very, very dirty seperate bathroom infront of the nurses station. When I say dirty, I mean right after the cleaning people left there were still flies circling the toilet and the entire bathroom had a distinct odor. Every time I had to pee I had to wander out into the hallway and ask someone to open the door to this bathroom and they would do so begrudgingly. Here's a kicker - the only group they offer is "SALAD CLASS". Guess what that is? It's a fancy way of saying "MAKE EVERYONE SALAD SO THE COOKS DONT HAVE TO DO THEIR JOB AND HAVE THAT FOR DINNER." The patients, who are again under stimulated and neglected, nutritionally, mentally, even their HYGIENE, are invited to chop Up vegetables for dinner. Yup, that's it. Doing someone else's job, and calling it a class. I have to say the middle Aged Filipino nurse was the sweetest lady ever and brightened up my day, everyday, and she is a saving grace.(Sorry, don't mean to identify by race but can't remember anyone's name) Basically whether I was feeling better or not I had to lie my way out of here because they were threatening to Keep me for an undisclosed period Of time, although I was not a threat to myself or anyone else. In any other setting that might be less terrifying but given this extremely stressful environment to already mentally fragile people, no thank you. I do not want to be alive anymore after having been in this place. I was bad enough when I got there. But they scarred me. I do not want to live anymore after having been here. They put me in with people with far worse illnesses than me and did not do enough to protect us. I was lucky to only have been there 4 days, FOUR DAYS and I am in agony. A friend entered voluntarily during a critical moment. After 2 weeks, he had stabilized and actually had begun suffering from the dehumanizing environment where patients walk around in a daze in pyjamas at all times of the day, are over medicated - often inappropriately due to misdiagnosis - and kept under lock and key. Though this may be appropriate for some patients, it is not for all. My friend had been trying for day to discuss his legal right to a discharge under his own authority, but doctors, social workers and nurses all dismissed his legitimate efforts. He is seen not as an individual but a substance user who is being kept against his will in an environment which only confirms that self image when he has other, healthier, more beneficial options. By denying him his autonomy, the staff places itself above their responsibilities. When I tried speaking with a social worker who lied about trying to reach me (a fellow professional who is better trained with far more experience), and when she was unable to justify her refusal to authorize his discharge, she simply hung up on me. This situation is carceral and detrimental to the patients health where the staff's 'treatment' paradigm is targeting custodial care. Intolerable situation. read more

Absolutely terrible. Stay away! My daughter was there in 2007 for a Bipolar relapse and treatment and conditions were wretched. Staff is terrible and negligent. Not clean and very unsafe. The best place that she has gotten treatment at was NY Presbyterian @ 525 E. 68th Street. Unfortunately, they cut down on the number of psychiatric beds in 2012 so patients may end up being transferred to their White Plains facility which has 300 beds for psych patients only. It happened to my daughter. Traveling or not seeing your loved one frequently may be hard on you and the patient if you cannot visit frequently but they do keep a well organized facility that is clean and safe. You can have peace of mind with this hospital because the staff is excellent and patients are very well monitored. read more

Went here after being admitted to the hospital after a bad panic attack, was told I would only be here for about 3 days or so. They kept me there for 9 days total, no psychiatry team on weekends, and the staff are incompetent. Some of the nurses attempt to help and calm some patients, however other nurses are simply rude, treat visitors with disrespect, and don't handle specific situations properly (such as a schizofrenic situation). Some patients walk around with excrement in their clothes for days and the staff dont seem to care much about it. Some of the care workers are not understanding and rude against all types of patients, they are impatient, they scream and shout to some patients, and would get mad if a patient would interrupt them from their phones to ask for water. Dietary restrictions are not taken in account at all, the rounds with doctors and service workers are useless and truly not benefitial for the wellbeing of the patients. More than a help, this place is a traumatic experience that resembles more a jail than a hospital. read more

A depressing pall hangs over this place that hardly helps patients being treated for depression. The social workers are good as are a very few non-degreed staff, but otherwise the staff is either rude, uncaring and/or should find a job where they don't have to interact with any human beings. Meals ranged from awful to not so bad but they were never warm, let alone hot. When I was discharged they all but pushed me onto the elevator. I put on shoes in lobby and packed my belongings there. Horrible place!! They released my sister just as sick as she went in. It was so obvious that her medication was not at a therapeutic level and they still let her go. Dr. and staff never return phone calls left from family. Four days after her release she's now at Elmhurst hospital. They are much better then this place. Only reason she needed up at this horrible place was because Elmhurst didnt have any available beds. Do not send your loved ones to this place unless your interested in wasting their time and keeping them mentally ill. read more

When a family member was admitted and I read the bad reviews, I was hoping that it was just the dis-satisfied people who were posting here and we would have a better experience. NOT! My main problem I am going to write about is the discharge process: basically, they LOST (misplaced? couldn't find) all the patients' valuables. That includes: cell phone, debit card, credit card, belt, Medicare card, keys, sunglasses, driver's license and more. They looked in their storage room for more than one hour and all they located was his cane (which was much larger than the other items). I made 3 phone calls to 3 different employees during this time, and no one seemed to find this a big deal, or care. Watch your belongings! Don't trust them! Guess what? You need a driver's license in order to replace your credit card! read more
