What a hidden gem this place is. At first when I arrived I did not know what to expect. My wife and I ordered two paninis (roast beef and proscutto). When I took the first bite of the roast beef panini, I was completely taken by surprised by how crispy and soft the bread was. I do not think I have ever had a panini this enjoyable. Both paninis also had an excellent balance. I was only planning to finish half the sandwich but ended up eating it all. We also got some of their pastry to go as well. Finally made it to this place after wanting to try it for about a year. Usually when I am able to go they are closed. Came in on a Saturday morning and it was pretty busy. Nice little place. Lady at the counter was very nice and took the time to answer our questions. So many options I didn't know what to choose it all looked so good. I decided I wanted a chocolate croissant they didn't have one but she said they could make me one, they did and it was delicious. I also tried the olive bread that was also delicious. My husband had a breakfast sandwich and he was very happy with it, I tried a bite and it was nice. Coffees were good too. Nice older lady from the back came to check on us and make sure we were enjoying everything. When we were done she came out and cleared the table and asked if I wanted a bag for my leftovers before I could even ask. Great food and service. 4 stars just for the pastries! Tried the pastries for the first time today and they were great! I got a croissant with a delicious pistachio cream filling and also got two fruit topped danish style pastries, one strawberry and the other peach. I liked that they weren't too sweet and tasted very freshly made. They were very light and flaky, yet buttery and filling. The pastries were unique and stood out to my boyfriend and I. We also got coffee, but we won't be coming back for it. It wasn't great. If you want some good coffee to pair with your pastries drive over to High Wire or Hal's Office nearby on Solano Ave. Can't wait to be back to try some more of their delicious pastries! read more

Definitely a hidden gem! The location isn't obvious but it's a cute oasis in an otherwise industrial area. There is some indoor seating but also plenty of outdoor seating. If you like Italian pastries this is the place for you!! The first time we came here, we had sandwiches for a late lunch. The bread was AMAZING and the generous drizzle of olive oil def made with even better, crisping up and just absolutely delicious! There weren't a lot of pastries left by then but we were determined to come back in the morning for those. And then we came back for breakfast on a Saturday morning. We were completely dazzled by the variety of pastries available!!! Everything looks sooooo good!! Both savory and sweet Italian pastries like ham and cheese and Nutella and fresh strawberries. Small but exceedingly serviceable establishment. Don't be dissuaded by it's location in an industrial address on Jacuzzi Street along I-80 West. Gran Milan is an oasis amongst the grit of industry. I can only report on the pastries, although the sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and savories I saw looked very appealing. And there was a reasonable flow of people coming in and waiting for takeout on the Saturday afternoon I visited. The sweet pastries I purchased--lemon tarts, a lemon-pistachio creation, and a chocolate-hazelnut temptation--we're delicious, fresh, and appealing to the eye as well as the tastebuds. The kitchen staff is beyond a doubt talented and know what they are doing. Front of the House staff was knowledgeable, personable, and affable. Prices were somewhat dear, however, the quality and taste make it well worth it. Everything is crazy expensive these days. This place is great! With one downside, which we can ignore. Food 5/5 We got a chocolate pumpkin brownie which was decadent, great chocolate flavor and a hint of pumpkin spice. The lobster tail is by far the best thing we got and I highly recommend getting that when you're there. I've seen this on yelp multiple times and have only failed myself from not trying it. Home from surgery I needed something that: *was available on DoorDash *open now *pizza with trusting yelp reviews I have that one month promo of a dollar delivery fee on DoorDash. There were three pizza choices, two of which would be suicide from ordering from & the other this place. As I did my research I saw too many reasons why I should order here. A lot of the reasons had to do with the yelp pictures & that they opened at 7am! I'm just kicking myself hard for always passing on this spot. Never again! My delivery was soooooooo fast. I received notification in less than ten minutes that my driver was on the way! Shortly after I'm stuffing my face in the lightly toasted, perfectly seasoned sauce, cheese pizza. Then to top it off, I had a delicious fruit tart. A buttery crust topped with fruit. Pretty lovely if you asked me. Oh and for someone of my size I ate three of those slices. Easily missable small bakery. Was quite intrigued by the very colorful fruit tart and so made a detour to Gran Milan while i was close by. Purchased a fruit tart as well as a lemon tart. Upon entering, some pastries in the front cabinet had signs which indicated what they were. In the cold box however were no signs (at least on the day I visited). Took the pastries home to enjoy. Lemon tart was good, not too sweet, just the right amount of tartness. Fruit tart however was not as good as it looked. The tart crust was a hard and crumbly, and of a different 'healthy' mealy mouth feel, the cream under the fruit was yogurt-like, so it wasnt sweet or complementing the fruit or the tart. Fruit selection was good. Now that i write this, it feels like the fruit tart was the equivalent of a fruit yogurt with healthy crumbles. read more

Nina and I met here today for lunch. Gran Milan had been written up in Nosh a month or 6 weeks ago and friends of Nina's reported they had been slammed w/ customers and out of most things when they were here a week or two later. We had already decided to wait and decided to go today. I was up on the early side (for me) so I called and reserved three olive bread sticks. I spoke w/ Anna, who was wonderful, warm and friendly. I asked about sfogliatelle and Anna said I was about 5 minutes too late. I just laughed and said that's how it is, sometimes. She volunteered that there were two left and I said that was just what I wanted. I'd never had one, but they sounded so good in others' reviews and I wanted one to give Nina, along w/ one of the olive sticks. I told Anna we would be there about 12:30. I got there a little early and found a good parking spot. I got in line and waited for Nina, who arrived a little later and joined me. I've been to Gran Milan since my initial review but haven't written an update. I've bought olive bread sticks, focaccia w/ cherry tomatoes, cannoli, and other goodies. As we stood in line we looked at the menus on the wall. Nina decided on an Iron Salad, which has spinach, beets and other healthy stuff. I decided to try their Caesar. I ordered Earl Grey tea w/ milk and sugar and Nina ordered an apple strudel to share. I saw they had wrapped all the olive bread sticks together so I asked Anna if it was possible to wrap one separately to give to Nina and she made it happen. She was so sweet and accommodating, despite being very busy. There are tables inside as well as on the patio. I took a two top inside, then moved over to a 4 top when it was vacated. The salads were served in white china bowls w/ plastic utensils and paper napkins. Nina wasn't that thrilled w/ her salad and wouldn't order it again. I thought my Caesar was good, but my preference is for salad to be sitting in the dressing for a while, so I think it would be better if I took it home, mixed it together and let it sit before eating it. After we finished our salads Nina asked that the strudel be heated and cut in half. It was brought to us by the owner and it was so good! It was not too sweet. The apples were a little tart and we both loved it. As we were leaving I talked to Anna about buying a piece of focaccia w/ cherry tomatoes and I brought it home. As an afternoon snack I had the sfogliatelle w/ a cup of tea and it was amazing, shatteringly crisp w/ a creamy filling that was, again, not too sweet. I can see having another of these in the future. Gran Milan is a treat to visit. There's a sign that their olives are being sourced differently because of the wildfires (probably in Greece) for the foreseeable future. I had a piece of the olive bread tonight tonight w/ dinner. The olives are smaller than the Greek olives, but the bread stick was still delicious, just different from its usual form. We will be back. read more

I went here for the first time this week and I don't know why I have not been here sooner! I didn't know what I wanted to eat for breakfast, but what I picked definitely hit the spot. I tried to pick a variety of items since I was also selecting items for the rest of the family. I bought a spinach & cheese strudel, olive stick, pumpkin custard croissant ('tis the season!), custard croissant, cannoli, chocolate twist and two sfogliatelles. It was all so delicious. A small yet authentic Italian bakery and pizzeria, Gran Milan is located in an industrial park, known as the Central Avenue Center, in a neighborhood known as the Richmond Annex, where there is basically the Pacific East Mall on one side of the Central Avenue exit of the Interstate 80 freeway, and a Costco and the Point Isabel Dog Park on another. Gran Milan is the epitome of a hidden gem as it's the only place that serves food in the vicinity and it's a bakery café with glass cases to show off their baked sweets and savory goods and a few tables inside and a couple more that make up their outdoor patio in front. I have been a couple of times and every time I go you will see the affable owner who hails from Italy, Rufo Verga greeting and serving customers with nothing but cheerfulness and positivity. The first time I went, I learned that their savory goods are not served until 10:30 a.m. at the earliest, but they do have breakfast sandwiches to go with your cappuccino or espresso for those early birds. So by not being able to order their Focaccia breads or sandwiches, the first time I went, I ordered some desserts including their version of an Italian Beignet, which in actuality is an Italian crème filled doughnut called the Bombolone, a strudel type pastry called a Plain Camel, a Tiramisu cake, since I will order anything with ladyfingers and heavy crème in it, and of course a cannoli, which I am always down for trying no matter how large or small it may seem to be. For those four items, it was less than fifteen dollars, and my favorite had to have been a choice between the tiramisu and the cannoli with the tiramisu being heavy and creamy, just the way I like it, and the cannoli being light yet not overly sweet, which is right up my alley. I was so impressed with their lineup of desserts that I promised myself that I would make a return visit a few months later, since Gran Milan is so conveniently located close to the Costco that an easy visit was a possibility any time I drove down Central Avenue. On my second visit, I went a little later in the day at 1 p.m. and there were a few people waiting for their house made pizzas. Since I didn't have too much time to wait, I was excited to see that they had four of their focaccias ready to serve with a simple heat in their oven. I asked their front desk associate what her favorite ones were and she suggested their eggplant and tomato focaccia and their mushroom and onion focaccia. Since they were only $4.75 each I decided to one of the two and promised myself that their onion and cherry tomato focaccia was one to order next time. But for the ones I ordered they were both savory to perfection with an abundance of fresh flavors thanks to the plethora of quality ingredients on both breads. To cap my quick lunch, I ordered yet another slice of Tiramisu and this time Chocolate filled Canoccini which is a cone shaped pastry filled with chocolate crème and topped with crystalized sugar. It was the perfect dessert to bring home for the evening. Obviously multiple return visits are in order for me at Gran Milan. Tasting those pastries makes me feel as if I am on the actual streets of Milan enjoying an evening cafe latte with a sweet delight at a café as people walked by. It is that good here and I love supporting local businesses in times that we are currently in. I can't to call ahead for their pizzas, which if you request it baked at half cooked they say you can cook it for four minutes in your own home oven at 400 degrees and it is ready to be eaten right away! They are about 14 inches wide, which isn't super large but just the right size for sharing for one meal and their Prosciutto and Mushroom and Chicken Pesto are simply calling my name. They also have Panini sandwiches to satisfy your savory taste buds that would equally compliment all of the sweet bites they have to offer! Gran Milan is a beautiful gem in a blue collar area that deserved as much attention and support as people can give during this time. read more

Stopped by when we were on our way to Point Isabel with our doggo (husband and doggo stayed in the car while I went to order to go). We were excited to try the ham & cheese brioche breakfast sandwich but didn't realize it was too late (I believe they said they serve breakfast until 10 or 10:30, and it was a little after 11, oops!!). So we ordered a few of the calzone-like choices up front. One was thinner and stuffed with ham, cheese, spinach. So delicious! The other was thicker (more in the Calzone level thickness) and had mushrooms on top on the outside, and caramelized onions, chicken, broccoli, cheese on the inside. Both were super tasty!! And last but not least, we got the croissant-shaped, super flaky, powdered sugared pastry. Wow! I don't come here to eat, I come to worship. Everything is unbelievably amazing. On a scale of 1 to 10, the best things are like a 25. The least best, maybe a 15. It's not cheap by any means. And I'm not rich by any means. But every once in a while, we just have to come here and splurge. Breakfast today (dine-in) was a spinach-feta strudel, the always-have-to-have-and-take-home-too sfogliatelle, and a cappuccino. Both the food items look small, but are so rich they made a very filling breakfast. And yes, it did come to $20 per head with tax and tip. But I know for a fact that nobody had a better breakfast than me today. Except maybe God. And even that's not a given. And you absolutely have to take Olive Sticks home with you (a small olive-studded long bread; baguette-shaped but a totally different texture). We have a plum tree in our backyard. This year, we he harvested a rather large bounty of fruit and were distributing it like crazy. It was easier in years past when we both worked. Now that we don't, and because of the pandemic. we can only bombard our neighbors so much. We decided to take some plums up to our El Cerrito friends and family. But of course, we couldn't go over with just plums so we stopped by Gran Milan to pick up some pastries. The shop is small. For social distancing purposes, more than two guests inside would be a crowd. Service is quick. The best thing to do is just order one of each and figure out what you can eat later. Short of that, know how many pieces you want and then work backwards from that number as you order items. That's what we did and then we added a couple more for good measure! lol. We took it to our friends house and the hostess cut most items in six pieces and arranged them on a platter. I'd name everything in the third picture but I lost the receipt so you'll just have to go in and try it for yourself. Suffice it to say, everything was absolutely satisfying, especially along a cup of coffee or tea.
