Ah, the Grand Winston. Grand. Winston (Churchill). Need I say more?
The Good - The hotel is very attractive, sleek, and modern. The picture of Winston Churchill in the lobby is a bit intimidating, but rather kind of cool. It does remind me how much the events of WW2 have shaped the cultural and political climate of Europe to this day.
The rooms are very large, with comfortable (albeit firm) double beds--not that common in the places I've stayed in Europe. It's a great place to relax on a multi-week business trip.
The hotel is actually right next to the train station, so you can get to and fro Schipol and Amsterdam easily. The tram also runs in to Den Haag very conveniently, so you can ride to town for dinner.
The Bad - Location. This is a business hotel for people who have business in Rijswijk, and that's about it. There is a general lack of things to do and decent restaurants. They used to have a Michelin-rated restaurant, which was superb--but the ownership of that moved on and in it's place is something that will do if you can't get out.
The Just Plain Weird - Ok, the transparent glass walls to the bathrooms are Just Plain Weird (tm). I mean, it's okay if you are alone...but seriously if you're here with your boyfriend or husband...um--there are some things that just requires some privacy. Shower=sexy, other business=please leave the room, honey.
Overall, recommended for folks with business in Rijswijk. If you are here as a tourist, just stay in Den Haag instead! read more
