UPDATE: I suspect upon my first visit to this location, I assumed that the kind young woman who examined me was Diana Yuen. After subsequent visits, I realize that it wasn't. At my 2nd eye exam, I met Dr. Yuen and the previous doctor was no where to be found. I had not been changing my contacts once a month as the manufacturer suggests, and Dr. Yuen really gave me an earful about it. I understand having concern for your patient's well being, but she did this first in the exam room and then again in the lobby in front of other patients and her staff. It made me feel like a naughty 2 year old and I really didn't enjoy the embarrassment. Subsequent encounters haven't proven more welcoming. They are still very competent in their expertise, but I think I'll be looking for better bedside manner in the future. ----- Growing up, I was always the last person picked for sports teams. Little did I know that I just couldn't see the ball. I squinted at the blackboard and had a C average. (What did the teacher just write on the blackboard? Why is everyone nodding like they understand?) I remember my mom taking me to get my eyes checked at our "three stoplight" hometown optometrist. He was the nicest man, and informed me that soon life was going to be very different. I picked out a pair of bubble gum pink frames, and walked out in astonishment, my eyes riveted on a dogwood tree across the street. You don't have to climb a tree to see it's leaves! Whoa, that's a curveball! And in a few months, I had an A average. I recaptured some of that hometown good feeling upon visiting Diana Yuen, a few blocks from my house. Tho the eye testing gizmos there are from 2001: A Space Odysey, the entire visit was warm, friendly, and professional. I even now have on file a picture of the back of my eyeball. It was very cool in an uber geek kind of way... and free of any problems, I might add! The office is pretty chic, and with a nice selection of designer frames to drool over. I just brought in my old glasses for new lenses... these days I've upgraded from bubble gum pink to a retro soft green. Even though they are a funky square cut shape that the salespeople in the NYC boutique where I bought them assured me that only specialists would handle, I was given no hassle at all. They just examined the frames and after a disclaimer that plastic frames sometimes break during the process, took them without a word. About a week later, they are ready for pickup. I've been a patient of Dr Yuen for almost 10 years. She is thorough, competent, and efficient. Her office staff are provide great customer service and are attentive and friendly. The office is clean, has up to date equipment, and is inviting. I only have 2 small complaints hence the 4 stars instead of 5. 1. When they call me to remind me to make my annual appt or when they call to remind me of my appt, they call my home, work and cell #s. Why all three? It's annoying. 2. I haven't needed glasses or contact lenses in a very long time (~8 years) because I had Lasik done. But about 2 years ago, I started needing glasses for nighttime driving. Because they have mostly high-cost, high-end frames only, I had a thought that I would get the glasses elsewhere (afterall, I'm only wearing in occasionally at night while driving!). It was obvious they didn't want that to happen! They really made it hard to get the written prescription and I felt some "pressure" to get my glasses there. I did find a reasonably price pair there so I didn't end up going elsewhere but I really did feel the sales pressure. read more

The service was pleasant and professional, and the exam thorough, but what put her in the five-star category for me was the multiple follow-up calls regarding my outdated type of contact lens. They talked over the basics with which my insurance covers and assisted me in making my first appointment; plus all my appointments since. We've been going to Dr. Yuen for 15 years, with a wide range of opt. needs. She is absolutely fabulous with little kids, teenagers, recalcitrant spouses (with really bad eyes) and harried moms. This review is for Grand Lake Optometry and Dr. Angela Cheung. The front staff is really nice and I was seen promptly by the doctor, they offer a lot of tests to look at everything from peripheral vision to focus etc. you almost feel like you are getting an eye grade, I passed. Dr. Cheung was very informative and efficient with her exam, looking at everything from the type of tears I have to my blink (I have oily tears and a half blink). Their selection is not too extensive, but they offer good brands like Oliver people, dita, masunaga, etc and if you know the brand has a style they don't have on hand, they'll order it in for you for $25 and the fee can be used to pay for the frames if you do get them. I had a really great experience here, the OD was very knowledgeable and helpful. The OD took his time to explain every procedure, and was extremely careful and thorough. The staff was great as well! Had to knock down a star because, their frame selection wasn't that great.. I kept feeling pressure by the staff to purchase frames.. You know how it goes.. Like others, I to have had a negative experience here. I would like to say I gave two stars because of the helpful women at the first desk. She was great. Unfortunately there are a lot of hidden costs here. The eye exam took most of my allowance and they only seem to sell one type of lens. The most expensive of course. My prescription is very low and do not need to polycarbinate lenses. The eye doctor was condescending while talking to me during my eye exam which I did not appreciate. I also asked them to email me my prescription so I can get my lenses elsewhere. They have not emailed me yet even though I sent a follow-up email requesting the prescription. I would shop around unless you have unlimited income to spend. read more

Dr. Yuen has been my optometrist for several years. I have full optical coverage with Kaiser but the thorough and expert way in which Dr. Yuen and her staff handles the health of my eyes is valuable to me. Mimi, the manager, is knowledgeable, friendly, and patient as she helps with frame and lens choices. I am always greeted with smiles when I come in, and everyone knows me and seems happy to see me. The staff is reliable and accurate when it comes to ETA of glasses and/or contact delivery. Each year my exam consists of: eye measurement, peripheral vision testing, eye pressure testing, that is before the doctor exams my eyes. I know that when I leave, my prescription will be accurate and exam thorough. The cost of the doctors time and expertise is valuable so I expect to be charged an additional exam when I try a new pair of contacts and have an exam to see how my eyes are doing. I prefer that to having 6-12 months of contacts that outdate because I never got used to them. There is tremendous value in having Dr. Yuens office here in the Grand Lake Area. read more

Dr. Yuen is great Dr. BUT her Office Manager Mimi is loud all the time and was very rude to me and my wife. She is using Sopranos methods and language. Receptionist very nice as is person who did my glasses fitting, too. We are never going back there. Another reason is because they wanted to charge both of us for trail pair of contacts and found frame that they've sold me, for half price on-line (Armani). Dr. Chischie was great, she left, too. I have been seeing Dr. Yuen and Yu for more than 7 years. They are wonderful! Always explain everything so I can understand. Their staff is really welcoming and super friendly. My last visit turned up some possible medical issues and Dr. Yu explained why he might be concerned and referred me to an eye specialist. They always take such good care of me. I've been going to Diana Yuen probably since she's been in business, the 80s, I venture to guess. I've always felt like a valued customer, one whose well-being is truly the center focus. My prescriptions over the decades have always been accurate and I have never experienced any problems with service. I love the location and the office is quite pleasant. I believe Diana Yuen is extremely competent and relayed a lot of good information. During my eye exam she was very thorough and as a result my prescription was the most accurate I've ever received. However, my complaint here is based on their operative side. I, too, am a victim of these "hidden costs" that many have been plagued with here. The lack of transparency on the total costs wound up blindsiding me and left me feeling like I was taken advantage of. Unfortunately, Diana Yuen acknowledged everyone who've left a negative review (the same recurring issue of "hidden costs") but the problem still persists today. The solution is very simple, be transparent with the total costs and provide a comprehensive bill to the customer from the very beginning. The fact that this procedure has yet to be implemented leaves me questioning if she does truly value her customers. I don't think I'll be returning, it's sad because I think Diana Yuen is a great optometrist. Dr. Yuen if you are reading this, please train your staff to provide a comprehensive breakdown of all the costs from the beginning. I went to Diana for an updated prescription, and was very pleased with the service. They took care of my insurance paperwork, offered me a drink, and the whole staff was really nice. I called several Offices and Dr Yu was very glad to see me, ASAP I had some allergic reaction to who knows what. My eyes were itchy and swollen. Thought I was going to pull my eye out and could not wear make up period. Dr Yu gave a very involve exam of my eyes. sent me out to get otc drops. When I placed the first drops in my eyes I wanted to sing it felt so much better. One week later i felt much better. I should have called his office first. Thank you Dr Yu! I've been here FOUR times in the past three months due to mistakes on my doctor's part, and ended up paying WAY more money than originally disclosed. Diana Yuen gave me the wrong prescription my first visit, and told me I need to come back in for a specific astigmatism lens fitting. I come in for the fitting and get new lenses to find they are uncomfortable and I can't focus at all. Angela Cheung helped me for my follow up and told me Diana had actually given me a prescription too high, and the astigmatism lenses were unnecessary. She had me try lower power, regular lenses, which were much better. When I came in for yet ANOTHER required follow up, the receptionist told me I owe them $190 for the fitting. The receptionists are all very kind and sweet, but when I questioned why I owed them money for a mistake they had made, she escalated it to the "manager," who told me that even though the initial incorrect diagnosis and prescription was my DOCTOR'S mistake, I still had to pay for the refitting fee, because they wouldn't have known it was incorrect until I had tried it. WTF. So, they give me a discount, to $136. Wow, thanks? ALSO they told me legally they cannot tell me what my prescription is until I've paid off the balance. I don't make much money, and I came here because they accept my insurance. What a waste of time this has been to me as well, having to take off work for visits I didn't need and then forcing me to pay for services I didn't need. I recommend Angela, not Diana, but do not recommend coming here unless you have money to burn and enjoy making numerous trips to the doctor because you're fixing their mistakes. read more

I must say I had a great experience. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. Todd was very professional. He ran my insurance quickly before we started to varify my coverage, which was good because I've had issues with other Optometry's when it came to coverage for non-prescription sunglasses (yes I have that coverage). Todd was great and knew how to help me with what I was looking for in sunglasses. He gave some good knowledgeable suggestions based on my needs. I was able to pick out and purchase my glasses on my lunch break, winner. I will return for an eye exam as my experience with the reception and sales staff was great. read more

Overall, not a very positive experience... - they gave me the wrong contacts to put in after my exam! i was SO weirded out to have someone else's contacts in my eyes! gross! - lots of pressure to purchase contacts or glasses there - had to call THREE separate times to have my prescription emailed to me, and... - email is the way they give you your prescription info, and they sent me the wrong prescription. thank goodness coastal.com verifies the information, and were able to correct it before I received my boxes of contacts for a small business, i am surprised. i gave them two chances, but still not satisfied. read more

Exam was good and thorough but I was charged $53 for a contact lens fitting which basically consisted of being asked "how do you like the contacts you've been wearing for the last 10 years? Do they fit well" and then a quick 5 second look in my eyes. Of course my insurance doesnt cover that so in going to an in-network provider for the visit, i actually had to pay $63 out of of pocket - $10 for my copay plus $53 for the contact fitting which is pretty bogus. I've only ever paid $25 or at most $35 for this at other places. On the plus side, they have a wide open schedule and I was able to get an appt pretty quickly. The office staff is nice too. Glasses selection is ok, I'll probably buy my glasses elsewhere due to selection. THe front desk service was very good and friendly. read more

Grand Lake Optometry is the best! I have been seeing Dr. Yuen for just about 30 yrs. And I've always been happy with my service. I love that fact that the office is also a boutique and they have a great selection of frames and some high end ones if your looking for some. I was just in there for my annual on Friday January 19, 2018 and was seen by Dr. Davis. She was great. She was patient and she heard all my complaints. I have to say Dr. Yuen has over the years picked a great group of people for her support staff and they as always came thru for me. YOU GUYS ROCK!! I can't wait for my new frames! I'm really surprised at the negative comments on here because I've never had a bad experience, not once. Sorry to those who have. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of Grand Lake Optometry's staff. My eye examinations are always very thorough, and the staff--with my many questions, sometimes--are really patient and helpful. I would agree on the problem of hidden costs, but having been a regular in their office for the past few years, I just ask them upfront about all costs/expenses, and the staff is very transparent about each expense. I don't think the "hidden costs" problem is intentional, but more a matter of implementing a policy to go through all expenses associated with tests, etc. beforehand. And to be honest, if you're going to undergo an eye examination--beyond what might be covered by your health insurance--it sort of seems silly not to be proactive and ask what the associated costs are (right?). read more

Front desk staff were fine and helpful - although the wait was long. The main problem I had was that they did not seem to know how to deal with my 8 year old son. He was admittedly anxious about the eye drops and eye puffs, but both the staff member who saw my son first, and especially the optometrist, had the worst bedside manner. They were abrupt, pressed for time, and dismissive of my son's anxiety. I understand that they are busy, but a little bit of friendliness and warmth would have gone a long way. The doctor and staff were rude to me. They also charged me a separate fee for getting contact lenses. I have been wearing glasses/contacts since the 6th grade, and no one has ever charged an additional fee to be fitted for contacts. No one at Dr. Yuen's office informed me of this fee, and of course, my insurance did not cover it. This fee should have been disclosed up front. It seemed very shady. I never went back. read more

The reviews are very much correct ...Staff fails to inform you of hidden charges until you go check out , go some where else. Sorry , but your staff really needs to learn the art of sales and proper communication. Yes, you have a beautiful office and great frame selection. However, your Optician and clerical staff lack proper opthalmic training. I was not properly fitted for my frame and had to go else where to have my new glasses adjusted. Also, I never recieved a reciept ( VSP ) print out of what my insurance portion was and what my portion would be...in this ecomony, consumers need to be able to make final decisions whether or not to consider add-ons if needed. I have NEVER been charged for a contact lense follow-up after being fitted ( I am an Optician and Have worked as a FRAME SALES REP and worked for VSP Labs as wel) . ... I was never told I would have to pay extra until I showed to my next scheduled appt. and was charged as Dr. Yuen recommended scheduling yet another follow-up contact lenses visit and I appreciate her being thorough but its the job of the staff to educate the and explain the covered and non covered insurance benefits ( My VSP covered exam , glasses , materials and contact lenses , BTW) look, Its fine if this is your policy but let the patient know prior. I found this optometrist on Yelp and I was highly satisfied during the time of my visit. Everyone is very friendly and personable. Boy, did I need to get my eyes checked. I had been wearing the same one contact in my left eye for a few months and even that was a trial pair from when I was seen at Wal-Mart (eek). Dr. Yuen knows her stuff and I got a beautiful pair of glasses. I was trying to decide between the Armani, Guccis, but the Oliver People's came in and triumphed at the last minute. Today I visited Grand Lake Optometry to be fitted for new prescription glasses. I'd previously called an left a message earlier this week, but didn't receive a call back, so I just decided to drop by. The front desk staff was kind and helpful, although I do find it strange that visitors are required to provide all of their insurance information before they're permitted to look at frames. I'm unsure of the name of the man who l helped me, but he's the reason I'm taking my business elsewhere. While looking at lenses, I had several questions and comments regarding my high prescription, a desire for thinner frames, and a preference to be cost-conscious. When I asked about what my insurance covered (referencing a document the man was holding), I asked him to share the information with me so that I could make a better-informed decision. He told me he couldn't share the document because it was internal. I found this odd, since it was my insurance information. I then asked him if he could write this information down, and he said he could tell me what was on the page. When I asked him why he couldn't write down what was covered by my insurance, he began arguing with me, telling me that I never asked him to write anything down. After going back and forth about something as simple as "What's covered by my insurance?" I politely suggested to him that I'd come back some other time. He gave an obvious, sarcastic sigh of relief, and said "Thank You". He repeated it again as I left the store. Really, all I wanted was a pair of glasses. This man argued with me about sharing with me what my insurance covers. And, earlier, he wouldn't answer my questions about high index lenses, he simply kept rambling off different terms related to different types of lenses. I couldn't tell if he was trying to impress me (after all, he began a statement with "As an optician..."), or if he was trying to impress himself. Either way, I'd avoid him at all costs. He also talked more than he listened, and gave off a used car salesman feel. Unfortunately I don't know/remember his name, but he is an average height African-American male (apologies for describing him by physical appearance in this manner, but I don't have his name), and was the only male who appeared to working today. Overall, the frame selection is decent, but I didn't have the opportunity to view them to the extent that I would have liked, given the unfortunate exchange I had with the optician. I strongly suggest avoiding this particular employee; if you can't, I'd suggest another optometrist's office all together. read more

0 STARS On my way home after a lovely breakfast, saw a few frames in the window and decided to stop by to browse. Went through the second gate as nobody was at counter to start browsing. As I started looking at frames, was accosted by a male staffer who rudely and abruptly asked me if I had an appointment. Politely said no and he insisted that I needed an appointment. To look at frames? Give me a break. He then informed me that he was busy with other customers and couldn't help me. First, why on earth would you require someone to have an appointment to look at frames. Seriously? Give me a break. Second, if I want help, I will simply ask for help. Plain and simple. I have lived in Oakland for about 15 years and have never had an experience like this by a local merchant. This place is pretentious, snobby and flat out rude and made a new potential customer (me) feel as if they were not welcomed at all. Let me remind the shop owner and staff that customer service is key your business succeeding. Also, your shop is on Lakeshore not Piedmont, Rodeo Drive or 5th Ave and you should welcome all customers. Not just those who have an appointment or look like they have $$$ to burn but those who simply want to browse. I needed a new pair of glasses and was referred to this optometrist by a friend. Dr Yuen performed a comprehensive eye exam and recommended a certain type of lens. When the glasses came in a week later, I was fitted and am very happy with the result. The only issue I had was the cost of the whole procedure. I was surprised by the amount I had to pay after my insurance paid. The glasses had a number of upgrades over what my VSP covered. My wallet is lighter but at least I can see. read more

Dr Yuen is a competent optometrist. However my reasoning for not recommending her services revolves around the business side of her operation. Her pricing is not clear and I feel that this is done in a deliberate manner. I informed her that I did have financial constraints. She then recommended tests where it was not clear what was and was not included in the price. When I asked the specifics of cost I felt like it was an imposition. I wasn't looking to negotiate. I was looking to avoid surprises and to have my questions answered and valued. If money is no object perhaps this will not be an issue for you but when I feel it's more about business then medical care I have issues. I recommend if you do use her that you clearly ask what is included in a particular test and what you will be charged. read more

Since I'm older and have issues surrounding aging and cataracts and tri-focals, etc. I am seeing another ophthalmologist in the area, who happens to be a close personal friend. But I see the care and concern and high quality care Dr. Yuen and her staff bring to my son's eye care needs and am impressed. We would recommend this office. read more
