Despite the tiredness, this is a great bar to start your night (or spend your evening, if you're not having a big one). Grab some two-for-one cocktails, unwind with friends and transition into a more tipsy, carefree version of yourself. It is 3 levels separated by street art painted walls. The inside levels have some bar, stool and table seating, the atmosphere is quite closed up and dark. The upstairs level has picnic tables and a far view of the city and has a completely different feel compared to inside. Maybe it is the daylight drinking or my older eyes but it is showing some age, but still if I am in Newtown I will be grabbing a Toblerone.

The masterful bartender whipped up our drinks in a jiff, and was super friendly throughout. We took our drinks to the next room over, where there were a handful of hightops and stools. My drink was hands down the best sour I've ever had (a drink I don't usually opt for) and probably one of the better whiskey drinks I've had as well--I have consumed many a whiskey drink. It was the perfect balance of flavors while not overwhelming the whiskey itself. The combo of citrus, lemongrass, ginger, and tea tree left my belly toasty and comfy for the evening. My sister enjoyed her penicillin a lot as well, though as she noted, had never had a penicillin similar. It was much savory than any I've ever tried, but very good as well. I would absolutely recommend Doss House for any whiskey or speakeasy fanatics in Sydney. The bartender could not understand me. I think I repeated myself at least three times. I guess the way I pronounced "Martinez" sounded like "martinis" lol. I ended up pointing to the drink in the menu before he finally understood what I was trying to order. I know I have an accent, but I didn't think it was that heavy lol. I will say that my Martinez was well made and tasted so good! My friend had planned to order a drink, but changed her mind after she saw how long it took for me to get my drink. Actually, at first, we didn't find the bar at all, because it shares the street number with a political office. The door to the bar is very nondescript, and I can see how it's easily missed if you aren't looking for it! (I'll definitely have to go back and take a photo so everyone can find it!) We open the door and walk down to the basement, into a dark but very spacious feeling bar. It's not large, but it feels like that because there aren't a million tables squashed together. And again, their cocktail and alcohol list is long enough to make up for it! jfunx and I both got a phily cheese and steak sub ($12) - They came on super soft buns and went pretty well with the big pickle and the corn chips (not like Mexican corn chips, think corn flavoured prawn chips!) they come with! I also ordered a Secretplay cocktail ($16) made up of gin, pomegranate liqueur, lime and lemon! It's sour, but not to the point where you screw your face up as a reaction! It has an aftertaste much like a pez candy, which I really like and makes me feel kind of nostalgic actually!
