Thought we'd try this place while we were visiting family. It was a cute ship that was very popular. There was a constant stream of people. The staff were friendly and helped explain some of their menu items. I wish the ice cream was a little thicker. They say their artic swirls are "what a blizzard wishes they were". But Dairy Queen you can tip their shakes upside down and spoon stays in shake and not a drip. My swirl was like drinking a shake. It was soft and almost like thick chocolate milk. We stopped here on a whim after a shopping trip at the outlets. It's easy to find right off the main road. Extensive menu with some items marked as "granny's secret recipe". We tried the birthday cake, French silk pie, and custom mix with Oreos/pb cups. My niece said "this is the best ice cream I've ever had". It was definitely creamy! I was a bit disappointed in my French silk pie because all the toppings seemed to be on the top so once I finished the top 1/3, I stopped eating it because it was just straight chocolate ice cream (which was good but not worth the calories imo). I was looking for a new local ice cream place to try and found Granny's! It was easy to find, but a little tricky to find parking. They have a huge menu with lots of flavors. The staff was kind and quick. They take card, but only with a $5 minimum charge so bring cash. I got the s'mores Arctic swirl which was a crunchy chocolate, whole marshmallows, and graham cracker chunks. My friend got the puppy chow flavor which she thought was really good too! An Eastside tradition. Better than any other local ice cream shops in town. It's a hole in the wall, on the frontage road near where they just redid Hubbell Ave. You've probably driven by many times, wondering what that pink trimmed building was all about. Well, turn the car around and stop by! It's worth the trip. I no longer live in the neighborhood, but we still make the trek across town to get this ice cream. The flavor of the base vanilla ice cream is wonderful.... as expected from something that's been around for over 30 years. The menu allows you to top off the ice cream with almost any thing you can think of. Arctic swirls are popular... It's Granny's answer to the blizzard. I'm partial to the nerds arctic swirl, but all flavors are fantastic. Slushies and shaved ice are also on the menu. Portions are HUGE! A small arctic swirl is 12 oz. Get the larger size and take it home for later. In fact, you have to take it to go anyway.... No indoor seating and limited outdoor seating on a normal season. On this particular day I finally broke down and got the unicorn shake (pictured). It's quite delightful. Very sugary. I love going to a real ice cream shop nowadays especially after the fro-yo craze with all these chain fro-yo places popping up everywhere. Nothing beats the taste of good old classic ice cream. This place I heard has been here for a while and I never noticed it, it is difficult to miss if you do not know where it is. Although it is on a main busy street, it just doesn't stand out to drivers in traffic. This is kind of like a classic ice cream shop, you stand outside and order the ice cream from the staff members who are inside the shop, which is more like a large booth than a shop. Parking is definitely limited, there are a few spots in front of the shop, but you may have to resort to parking in a random spot and walking up. Granny's offers a great variety of ice cream products and flavors! We were a bit overwhelmed with all the options, but it wasn't too busy so we were able to take our time to look over everything. We got the Oreo Arctic mix and a Butterscotch dipped cone! These tasted awesome! We both got a medium size and both had difficultly finishing it. If you get a small size I guarantee you will be satisfied. They do accept cards now (minimum $5) which is nice! The staff members are very friendly! This was the biggest doggie dish I have ever seen! Props! On the human side, I had a peanut butter cup arctic swirl. It was pretty good with real peanut butter and that chocolate sauce that hardened into a shell when it's cold. I'd have to say the quality / cost is comparable if almost not the same to Dairy Zone. I had the Arctic blast (it's their version of a Blizzard) and unlike a lot of shops where you have all of the mix-ins sitting on the top or about a 1/2" into the cup, this was mixed all the way through. The staff was friendly. We will definitely be going to Granny's again. The only pain in the rear (not their fault) was the construction - had to take some neighborhood detours to get there but glad we did :) read more
