I stayed in the Grant Hall Hotel for one night during a cross-country roadtrip during the summer of 2024. I wanted to be able to walk around the old downtown, so this hotel's location was perfect. The decor in the lobby is lovely and draws attention to the character that comes with being an older building. The halls were a little dingy in parts, but not dramatically so. The elevator was small but always came quickly. My room was a clean and had a good-sized bathroom and surprising large refrigerator. The floor looked like it had been recently replaced with a laminate-type faux-wood (possibly because I was in one of the dog-friendly rooms?) but it seemed like it hadn't been measured properly, because there were some gaps between the planks. The parking lot is located behind the building next-door, so you enter and exit through a side door. This was slightly confusing when I checked in, but wasn't an issue after that. I didn't try the on-site restaurant, but I did notice that people staying elsewhere (and locals) seemed to be eating there, so maybe I should have given it a go. What could be an amazing European-style hotel falls short in so many ways. It felt like a Motel 8 with worn-out carpets, cheap "upgrades," and shoddy finishes. Our toilet ran ALL night despite our efforts to get it fixed by staff and attempts to fix it ourselves. The door locks and handles were often stuck or didn't work properly. read more

We chose Grant Hall Dining Room after a friend who lived in Moose Jaw recommended it to us. This place is a true 5 star! The service, ambience, food and drinks were all beautifully presented and tasted equally as good. All of our plates would have been licked clean if we could have got away with it. We ordered soup/sandwich & salad/sandwich combos. The meat was a slow roasted Prime Rib with pea gravy, and cheese on a Ciabatta bun, absolutely mouth-watering delicious! The soup choices were Boston Clam Chowder or Chicken Noodle. Both were homemade soups with a delicious depth of flavour. Not too salty or too little fillings. The kids ordered poutine with chicken fingers and we were all pleasantly surprised that the chicken was homemade using breast meat. The one last thing that put this reviewer over the edge was the water. Yep, water. This water tasted perfect! No where else in Moose Jaw did we have such an exceptional glass of water. Been here for dinner and it's amazing. But lunch leaves much to be desired. The bison burger as well as the asparagus soup had a burnt taste. The trout dish was good but nothing spectacular. My wife reported that the teriyaki chicken wrap was fine but she couldn't taste the teriyaki. If only the lunch matched the dinner in this establishment. The waiter confirmed that the chef only works the evening dinner service. If they are going to offer a lunch service, they need to have a chef on duty. There isn't one and it shows. read more

First of all, the decor is a feast for the eyes. It feels fancy and looks gorgeous! They have restored that old building very well. Additionally, Moose Jaw is severely lacking in places to eat where it wouldn't be weird to be dressed up and where they actually use linens at the table. So having the opportunity to be dressed up for a meal is actually a welcome novelty in Moose Jaw. All in all the food was decent. I had the Grilled Vegetable Openface Sandwich with Camembert and a side of Roasted Fingerling Potatoes. The grilled veggies were quite good but definitely too heavy on the red onions and too light on the zucchini/eggplant/red peppers. The roasted potatoes were cooked to perfection. As far as flavour goes, the potatoes (without ketchup) were a bit flat and could have used a tad of salt, as could have the sandwich. Additionally, the sandwich portion was actually quite small. It was openface on a piece of foccacia that was about 3"x3", Not a huge amount of food, but there were a LOT of potatoes (read: too many). Also, the bread was not toasted, it could have benefited from a quick toasting or grilling to match the roasty flavours of the veggies. In sum: -Decor: A+ (which counts for a LOT in Moose Jaw) -Presentation: B (my potatoes were inexplicably plated - about 5 in a bowl ON the plate and the rest on the plate not in this small bowl. It is hard to give this place only a 4 star review as I always try and look for the good but I am an extremely particular person and tend to grade on a curve because of that, and want to be fair to my 5 star reviews. My standards are set by my best experiences and although there are many wonderful attributes of this dining hall there are important points that are the reason I have to say 4 not 5 stars. The atmosphere and ambiance are lovely, I loved everything about the decor. Based on the crowd they seemingly cater to a slightly "older clientele" which is why I was surprised by the split in service. What I mean is, there are mostly male servers who are professionally dressed in suitable attire for this type of establishment, but then there 1 female working there who was not in any type of uniform but was in fact wearing thigh high leather boots and an animal print top that was more circa "Pretty Woman" movie (pre makeover scene) that had both myself and my husband very puzzled. He commented that she seemed more suitable for a BP's lounge then the #1 rated restaurant in Moose Jaw. We were there for our anniversary and were quite dressed up as were the other customers, so she seemed very out of place. Our server was also female but in uniform and was sweet but not quite the level of professionalism that the male servers seemed to be portraying. In regards to the food, the menu is great but I found each item we ordered to be lacking in 1 area or another. We first ordered 2 starters - the bacon and scallops ($17) which came as 3 small scallops across 2 strips of back bacon, the flavour was decent but the portion was relatively small for the price, we would have been very happy with either 3 larger scallops or more small ones if that was all they could source. The second was a Lobster and Crab cake ($14) came as 1 decent size portion. I wouldn't advertise it as lobster as it just tasted like crab and my husband got 2 small pieces of shell in his bites but the corn relish was nice that came with it. Main course: I ordered the Duck ($29) and my husband ordered the beef tenderloin ($35) We actually switched meals a couple bites in as his steak (ordered Medium Rare was Medium well) and the duck wasn't really what I was expecting. It worked out as Im pregnant and ate the overdone steak and my husband didn't mind the duck. There was nothing exceptional about our meals, both were served with the same cabbage and onion "stir fry" which had a couple slices of zucchini and maybe it was kale or swiss chard but it was soggy and bland. Ive never had duck served with a side like that, Im used to duck either being smoked or at least the skin be crisp, this was plain and large part was inedible because was too fatty as it was not cooked in a way that rendered it out. We waited quite a long time for our waitress to return (10-15 minutes) after we had finished eating waiting for our plates to be cleared and wanting to order desserts. The restaurant was nearly empty at this point but none of the other workers helped our server by clearing our plates, she came rushing back into the dining hall saying she was also serving a large private function in a back room. Fair enough but someone could have helped her with us as they were all standing around doing nothing. We ordered desserts and they were by far the best part of the meal. Extremely large portions and the taste was delectable. Hubby had the Chocolate Peanut praline bar ($10) and I took her recommendation and ordered the cheesecake in phyllo ($10) which is easily one of the best desserts Ive ever had. Didn't get the brand of Pinot Gris we ordered, although the one we were given was good. Dining room is beautiful. Appetizers were excellent, main meal nice presentation but average. 2/4 people who ordered type of potato didn't get it--instead got what the meal was "supposed" to have with it? Not sure. Elected to order our breakfast as continental was pretty basic and unappealing. Bacon and eggs were same as anywhere else. Coffee service poor--had to wait and finally went for our own cups and there were only two so the other two had to wait. Overall, a bit disappointing. The food, service and atmosphere were amazing. And my group isn't always the easiest to please as we are foodies and are often disappointed. Of the appetizers, my favourite was the crab cake. The sauce that it came on was incredible and the smokiness of the sauce with the corn - perfect! We also tried the scallops and bacon (scallops cooked perfectly and two of us loved the thick cut bacon, two found it a little fatty for their taste), the calamari and the escargot and chorizo. All were very good, tasty, well presented dishes. For main course the best dish at our table was the duck confit ravioli. The sauce was a surprise - as it had more of an Asian flair than Italian, but was a perfect fusion. The other dishes tried were the seared duck breast (I didn't actually try much of this, but my brother in law seemed to really enjoy it!) the pistachio crusted trout (first time we have ever enjoyed trout skin!) and the shrimp and scallop curry (again seafood perfectly cooked and the flavours perfectly balanced) I would recommend this restaurant and hotel to anyone and can't wait to find an excuse to come back!!! read more

The building is beautiful and they clearly aim to for fine dining/innovative food. The problem is they try too hard. They behave over-elegantly, and the prices are over-elegant; unfortunately it just not meeting the standard its sets for itself. The food is meh and borders on weird, and not in a good way. Beautiful restaurant. Great service. But best part is the food. My wife had the trout and it was delicious. I had the fresh greens salad to start and the ribeye steak. Aug 2016, we had a 5 star dining experience at Grant Hall Dining lounge. It was absolutely excellent - best dining experience we have had in Moose Jaw. Outstanding tastes, everything cooked to perfection and beautifully served. March 2017, we went back anticipating another 5 star experience. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I had the $45 Rib eye ordered medium rare and was served medium well and tough. In fact, I could have cooked a better steak on my own grill at home. My wife had chicken, was overcooked - hard as a rock, with no spices. The vegetables were no where near cooked enough, sure I get el dente, but these were next to raw. The ambiance added to the issues as it was so hot in the dining room, we were literally sweating. Due to thermal heating or some such, there was no way to turn the temperature down, other than opening the back door. Ridiculous. Honestly, for the prices that were being charged, it was awful. As we stayed around town, we heard folks having similar experiences as us and it turns out the chef we had in August 2016 was no longer there and this was a different chef. This explains the situation. Hotel is very good, we stayed in a nice room and it was clean and quiet, even though the iron was missing from the room when it came time to press our clothes. We did have continental breakfast the next day with bacon, eggs and toast, with excellent coffee. Until there is a new chef, and especially for the money, I would highly advise to stay clear of the Grant Hall Dining Room and Lounge. read more

Made it to Moose Jaw on our way back to the States from Calgary that day. Had intended to stroll the "main street" and grab a bite on our way out of town. To surprise, 5pm on a Saturday in September, not much, if anything was open. The Dining Room at the Grant Hall was, we took a seat in the lounge. Service, in Canada as a whole, is slow, to American Standards. It took time to see a server, to get coffee, to actually order food, and then the food was slow. The place is beautiful and the food was very good. Canadian pricing is very good currently with the exchange. We left happy and full, just saying "that took a while". We had brunch and it was average. The selection and quality do not live up to the decor. There were no waffles or French toast - a staple at most brunches. The four of us all had differing entrees, and all were prepared to perfection. All staff that we encountered were extremely friendly and pleasant. The only thing that we could say that kept us from giving Grant Hall Dining Room & Lounge a 5 star rating was the slow service in clearing the table. My partner was not impressed with their soup but thoroughly enjoyed the trout plate she ordered. I had the rib eye steak which was quite good. We ate at the Grant hotel during our stay in Moose Jaw and were very underwhelmed. The restaurant - although beautiful - is ridiculously overpriced for what is served. My friend I came with got the stuffed peppers which she said were very bland for $30 and no side. We got $14 mussels to start which was about 10 of them covered in cheese decorated with a peice of parsley. It was just disappointing that I paid $90 for a meal of 2 appies, an entree and a glass of wine for below mediocre food. We left also not full. Wouldn't go again. read more

My friend and I ate at Grant Hall dining room recently, and have a mixed review. The décor is nice, but I was expecting it to be more authentic. It looks quite gaudy. The furniture in both the lounge and dining room is very heavy, very cumbersome to move (in terms of chair in/out from table). The front entrance is completely underwhelming, utilitarian and quite ugly. The doors are steel with a push bar to get out, like you'd see at a stadium or an arena. Hopefully this is still on the list of things to complete. It's not inviting at all. The original building had a very grand staircase that doesn't seem to be anywhere, and I'm curious where that went? We started out in the lounge and wanted to order a bottle of wine. We were left with the menus for over 10 minutes. My friend finally went to the bar to order a bottle of wine. The bartender came over, and was sorry, but they didn't have it. She chose another one. Repeat scenario, but the third time he came back with the wine list and together they reviewed what they actually had. Once we had the bottle at our table, it was lovely. We moved into the dining room, and I found the overhead chandelier lighting, while beautiful, was quite over-powering, and there was no music, or anything background to add to the ambience. Some nice classical or jazz music would be nice. We both ordered the 'spring salad' which the menu said came with calamari and marinated mussels. We asked to have the marinated mussels left off, which they did. It was a good salad, but it seemed like an odd combination of food, which also included grilled pineapple. Each component separately was very good, but as I said - an odd combo. As the salads arrived, I asked our waiter if we could have some napkins as there were none on the table. He looked genuinely puzzled. We had seen the bar-staff person removing wine goblets when a table was seated, but these wine goblets unfortunately had the napkins in them, so both were whisked away. If she was new, she should have been trained better, or somebody should have been watching her. We watched her do this to several tables. Very diligent, but incorrect. We also both ordered the Three Nut Curry - it was delicious, although my friend thought the jasmine rice was dry. The portion was substantial, and came with a grilled (read: dried out) piece of pita, but a lovely accompaniment of a tomato salad, which while very vinegar-y, was wonderfully ripe and flavourful. I saved some of it as I wanted to take the leftovers home to my husband. When we were finished with our meals, we asked that both sets of leftovers be combined to take home, and I discovered later that they had included the dried out pita, but had discarded my wonderful tomato salad!! I had specifically gestured to both plates of leftovers and said to wrap it "all" up. I'm torn whether or not I would try this restaurant again with my husband. read more

We went there for brunch on a Sunday morning and for a continental breakfast the other morning of our stay at the Grant Hotel. This review is really specific to the brunch. We felt that the selection for the brunch buffet was somewhat lacking, with the exception of dessert. The servers was super friendly. The decor was stunning - the best I've seen since the Royal York in Toronto. The buffet was 11/10. The variety was amazing...every item we selected was cooked to perfection. The dessert table was spectacular. The $25 / per serving for the Brunch buffet was reasonable - considering the fantastic quality of the preparations. The food we were able to get was very good, however they had run out of mashed potatoes, cabbage rolls, buns and turkey breast. I made a reservation to make sure I could have a really nice lunch and I was quite dissapointed. If you have reservations you should know how much food to make. I also found it disturbing when our waitress said that she likes it when there is a buffet because they can take the desserts and try them. The food at the Grant Hall for both catering and in the dining room is fabulous! Our group found no fault in any of the choices offered and the "continental" breakfast is more like a Sunday brunch you would pay a good price for! As for the service, there seem to be some kinks that need to be worked out on who is doing what - clean up for catering and staff taking accountability for their jobs. Overall, highly recommend, just be prepared to be very involved and give directions on what you need for your meeting or in the dining hall. read more

The surroundings are beautiful. I made a lunch reservation for a birthday celebration yet we were placed right by the entrance. People had to walk around our table. The food was ok. The crepe was not very good, falling apart and not very good flavour. The "spicy" sauces don't have much kick on the pasta dish or chicken burger. The quiche was ok but quite a small serving. Prices are reasonable for this type of restaurant and the service was very good. We have eaten here twice in the past for dinner and the food was better. There are better places in town for lunch but we wanted the ambience. read more
