I absolutely love the bagels from Grateful Bagel in Sebastopol and have never had a problem with the quality or taste. I decided to try the new location (4th street in Santa Rosa), the bagels are just as good but the poor service has unfortunately transferred to the new location! I have been there a total of 5 times and every time there has been a problem with my order, even though I order the same thing every time I go in there. Apparently asking for extra toasted means not toasted at all. Really tired of paying close to $5 including tip for a bagel that isn't remotely warm. The young brunette girl was SO rude and disrespectful when I asked if they could put cream cheese on the bagel to go she rolled her eyes, snapped at me saying they don't do that. I had a large order to fill and they definitely lost out on business but now I will be sure to let anybody else know about the experience I had here. After that attitude I said thank you but I don't want your service and walked out. I refuse to spend my Money there and all 12 people I had to pick up lunch for are also appalled at such disrespectful service and most likely will not go back either. The only place that makes a bagel sandwich better then I do. But then again I make them cheaper. The prices have gone up a significant amount and the staffs attentiveness has gone down. There are maybe two people I enjoy seeing when I walk through the door, which is really a shame because Grateful Bagel has such character; the chess board and pieces they used to have set up outside, the jar of Cheerios labeled "bagel seeds", one of the shops that makes Sebastopol still feel small an homey. Visiting sebastopol for the weekend seeing family. Decided to pick up bagels for the family to take back to the hotel. It was 9 o'clock on a Sunday. Walked in to a semi miserable counter staff. no customers, 3 people working. Order some bagels, ask for some humus too. Still no enthusiasm of joy, just getting a really negative/down energy from this place. Needless to say the bagels tasted great, but the service sucked. After paying the lady puts 4 bagels and a large hummus on the counter. Bear in mind it is dumping rain outside....with no other customers in the store. She looks at me after a few seconds and says" you need a bag?" I was like "yeah" I had 4 bagels a large humus and knives/napkins to carry to my car in the rain....Just really wasnt feeling the service. read more

Overall, this place hits the spot like no other on a Saturday/Sunday morning. Their bagels are truly my favorite, the pizza bagel specifically. I'm no bagel connoisseur so I'm not sure what the true "bagel standards" are but I find them to have a balanced texture - fluffy in the center with a nice crust on the outside. Their sandwiches are also crazy good, a tid bit pricey but oh so good. If I had to give any constructive criticism, this place gets packed and as I result I avoid during peak hours. read more

I have been looking forward to trying this place forever! This morning my dreams finally came true. Sadly, it just didn't work out. I have resolved to never leave a bad review, but this was the worst customer service experience I have ever had. Ever. There were flies in the display case, which honestly does t bother me but probably would some. The girl at the counter was rude. She asked us if we needed help but we were still looking. She may or may not have asked a second time, I didn't hear her. She started to move on to the next customer who had just walked in. No big deal, but when we asked for service, she got angry. Not ok. The correct response was "I'm sorry I didn't realize you were ready, if it's ok I'll get these guys first." Not "I asked you if you needed help and you just stood there so I am taking them instead." There was an argument with the person I was with. We left. I am very passionate about customer service (I know what it's like to be on both sides of that counter) so I thought to return, make amends, insure that neither party walked away having this interaction on their mind, but when I opened the door she was telling the other customers what jerks we were. Unacceptable. Anyway didn't even get a bagel. Left hungry. I might go back and edit this review to reflect better food and service. To the owner and or manager or even that server, if you read this and I hope you do; smile at the customers when they walk in. Say hi even. When they are contemplating the menu, ask if they need help deciding, make a recommendation, BE ENGAGED. Don't let people be rude to you, you don't deserve or get paid enough for that, but don't ever argue, and don't let them leave mad. They won't come back. Consider the possibility that the person in line may have hearing trouble, so make sure you are making eye contact. Again BE ENGAGED. I'm going to start by saying that I LOVE Grateful Bagel. By far the best bagels in Sonoma County, they're pizza bagels are to die for. The service is always excellent, the girls they have working are always so friendly and efficient. This shop had been a sebastopol favorite for years, unfortunately this is no longer a buisness I can support. First of all, there's usually about of 50/50 chance of them being out of what you want. They're constantly out avocado, bacon, and various sandwhich ingredients. Clearly the store owners are not as concerned with customer satisfaction as they should be. My largest concern is the treatment of employees. Lately every time I have come in they have been short staffed, and the poor girls they working are left completely overwhelmed by a line of customers reaching out the door. And the shop is just WAY too hot. The working conditions are just inhumane, a few afternoons I've been in and it's been over 90° in there. How can that even be legal? Many times I've had to walk out or avoid stopping there even though I've loved these bagels for over 10 years, since I first moved to sebastopol. It's a shame to lose such a formerly great buisness. read more

The food is good, my main problem is the consistency and availability of the coffee. Almost every time I go in there at least one if not all three of the coffee dispensers are empty. You also have about a one in four chance that the coffee will be ridiculously thin and not satisfying as a result. The service is generally good, some of the staff are top notch but others not so much when the manager isn't there. College-age girls talking about their lives or fiddling on their cell phone instead of being fully aware of what is going on or who is next in line. Overall a good place to grab breakfast or lunch, I just wish they'd tighten up a little bit in the above departments. read more

Wholly disappointing experience. Didn't even end up getting bagels. Pulled off 116 at noon on a Sunday. Unsurprisingly, they had stopped making bagels. That seems fair; its late in the day for bagels. What was surprising was they were out of things like butter. Worse yet, we stood there while one party was helped for at least 10 minutes. This was one of the few places we liked left to walk to in Sebastopol that hasn't gone out of business yet, but now it's gone to the dogs too. There's no place to sit inside, & it's so noisy outside, right next to main street with all the trucks, who wants to even be there? They're trying to train some new teenagers to work here but they obviously don't get it. The customer service has seriously deteriorated since this summer, with almost all new people there. The new gals in the store left out all of the vegetals on my sandwiches 3 times in a row [all different girls], which was 3 times in 3 months. We used to come here almost every week but no more. They've also stopped serving salad sandwiches as well. Last time I had an Ian's Oasis, & the pastrami? was so tough it was like shoe leather. They've even put in 1 of those new card readers you have to sign with your fingernail, making it easier for anyone that steals a credit card to use it. Stumbled upon this tiny place several months ago, who doesn't love a bagel? They have a large variety of flavors to choose from as well as a menu with so many different ways to enjoy them, from capers to cucumbers. I love that they have a great variety of hot and cold teas to choose from. My personal fav is the cheesy jalapeño with cream cheese(so daring). Breakfast lunch or a snack, this place is cute, easy on the pocket & has a friendly staff. MADE FRESH DAILY & day old discount bagels. Yum! read more

I waa born and raised in NYC and while I love everything else about living in Sonoma County, I was really missing a good bagel. Not anymore. I stopped here on a hunch when I was looking for something quick to eat between work appointments. I am so glad I did. What a shame that The Grateful Bagel is no longer great! Imagine my shame after bringing my boyfriend here for a quick bite, only to discover horrible, stale bagels, lox free lox schmear, and a big price tag to boot. He complained the rest of the afternoon about how we were ripped off paying $7.50 for a bag of stale bagels and a small container of cream cheese that might have been blended in a machine, that had just been used to do something with actual lox...in fact there wasn't any lox to be found, just cream cheese and dill. Avoid this place. The salt bagel was inedible, not using delicate crystals of sea salt or anything remotely appetizing, but rather coated in what could only be Morton's salt. Only possibly a deer would find it worth eating.Try Andy's market a little further west on Hwy. They had lots of good looking sandwiches to choose from. We picked up some beautiful fresh produce so dinner won't be the waste that lunch was. How is the Grateful Bagel staying in business? So sad to lose a Sonoma County standby. If you, however have a yen for a Grateful Bagel, wait until evening when disgarded bags of the bagels are given away for free. However, this might be best for your bird feeding needs. read more
