This place is right nextdoor to Flame Broiler, so I've seen it many times. From the looks of it, it is a customizable salad place. Think Subway Sandwiches or Pieology, but for salads. It is a cool concept. I finally got the chance to try it out. I walked in and there was a solo customer and a group of three people ahead of me. The solo customer had just finished her order and I was focused on the menu so not really paying attention. Basically, you choose your base, additional add-ins, a protein, and dressing. The party of three in front of me were kind of talking amongst themselves and told me that I could go ahead. As I was ordering, I noticed they changed their mind and abruptly headed out. I was unsure why. The place is clean and ingredients look super fresh. As I was finishing up my order, I saw why they changed their mind and left. The woman serving me was helping me cut up my protein (chicken) and scooped it up with the knife and her gloves hand. She proceeded to pick up the remaining pieces with her gloved hand and place it in my salad. She immediately grabbed a towel and wiped her gloved hands with said towel. I was shocked and grossed out at the same time! She then rang me up (with same gloves on) and packed my order ina bag. I did not see her change her gloves at all. I understood why the party of three in front of me left. I was hopeful that the gloves were relatively new. I thought if I air fried the chicken well enough before the eating it with the salad, I might be safe. I was wrong. I had food poisoning. The salad was likely compromised by the chicken, but it could easily have been the chicken too (although I heated it up really well). I know it was from the salad because this was the only thing I ate that day and within the last 24 hours. When I work my shifts, I fast and when I get off, I sleep and get food a few hours after I wake up. It is sad because this place is clean and ingredients look fresh. The woman who handled my food was relatively friendly. I think she just needs retraining. This is why food servers get food handlers cards. I did scope out the place the next time I was eating at Flame Broiler. It was a different server and he changed his gloves and appeared to handle everything properly. That's why I can't give this place just a one star. Just be aware of how your food is being handled when you go in. Grater Greens is a make your own salad, fast casual eatery in Mission Valley. It's located in the Friars Mission Center just off Friars Rd where the Ralphs is. They have a variety of preset menu options or you can go down the line and have them craft a salad to your liking. They're also available via delivery apps. For the price, I do think the portions are large. They don't skimp and fill the bowl to the brim with ingredients of your choosing. I also like that the free bread they include is pita. I find that while the portions are huge, it's never truly satisfying. Some of the greens can look a little limp, so I often choose my base based on what looks the most fresh. Some of the ingredient toppings are raw, while others have a marinade or seasoning. I like the seasoned cauliflower, but find the brussell sprouts to be dry and not quite right (in between raw and cooked). I've gotten a few different salads from here, but there's just something missing. Just a good salad bar for quick meals. You get in line specify wrap or bowl, and then you can go with a menu recipe or just tell them what you want on your order. Go through the line and then get your drinks and out the door. Limited interior and shared exterior seating in the small food court of a strip mall. Came here for a quick meal, and it was good. Only issue was some of the kale was faded. The server even lifted up a yellow piece to show a coworker, but then put in on my salad. No biggie, there is a lot, so I pulled that piece and two or three others off when I got it. They tend to be a little heavy on the dressing so you may want to specify light if getting a dressing. Good service, mid food!! I visited after work for a healthy alternative that isn't a chain. It's located in a shopping plaza near some business centers so there is plenty of parking. Nobody was there when I went. The service was really good, they were very nice to explain the process to me. I built my own vegan bowl and they had plenty of options, and topped it off with the lemon tahini dressing. The bowl itself was really dry and under seasoned? It just felt not as well seasoned as other similar chain restaurants, and they were pretty light on the dressing so it didn't have much flavor. Graters Greens is a couple of suites over from its older and less healthy sibling, Grater Grilled Cheese, in the Friars Mission Center of Mission Valley. Their theme was bowls and salads, either in a preset combination or make your own. This type of fast casual eatery has become more common around the SD area over the past few years. The inside of the suite was clean and neatly decorated. There wasn't a lot of seating with around eight spots at a countertop near a window and one table for four. I didn't want to build my own meal, therefore I opted for a Nicoise salad with a salmon fillet which cost an extra $4. The components were mesclun greens, a hard boiled egg, green beans, garlic roasted potatoes, roasted cherry tomatoes, blue cheese, and marinated olives. A traditional Nicoise salad has anchovies or tuna as the fish. In this version, salmon was used instead. The server recommended the champagne vinaigrette dressing so I took her advice. The portion size of the bowl was decent, however I wasn't fan of the salmon substitution as it didn't provide the same balance of flavor as anchovies or tuna. That was the main reason why I didn't elevate the rating of my dining experience at Grater Greens to a four star level. read more

To celebrate Social Worker's Day, the social worker on our team chose this place to celebrate. Since this was a to-go order, I can only comment on the food and the website. I must say I was pleasantly surprised that Graters had a salad branch as I was accustomed to the Graters grilled cheese sandwiches. The website was easy to navigate and allows you to choose from a variety of salads, including a build your own. I opted for the Kale Caesar with Salmon. The salad is quite a huge portion and I was stuffed! The only issue I have is that the Kale wasn't softened, it was quite tough. Typically, Kale is prepared softened to allow for easier digestion since kale is such a rigid green. Salmon was okay, a little bland for me. Listen... I, too, kind of huffed when I saw the build-your-own was much more than the salads they offer. I was looking for a ceasar salad with some oomph... but not like Kale and whatever it was kinda oomph. So here's how I back doored the system and built-my-own for the same price as a regular salad. I ordered the Kale Ceasar but asked for all romaine lettuce. Then I asked for black beans, don't come for me.. there's a method to my madness. I deleted the tomato because I'm picky... and opt'd against the $4 cubed chicken add on. Then asked for their awesome as heck balsamic dressing and a piece of pita. I got everything I wanted just by customizing a current bowl they had and not going through the build-your-own. It came out exactly as I wanted it... a twisted ceasar on balsamic steroids (they give you two dressing cups). And I was so about it. My only chuff is their prices. I get it, it's Mission Valley.. everything is expensive. But the salad was good nonetheless. I realized at the very end that they were making wraps now and was a little bummed I didn't see that before or wasn't told about it before. But whatever, my fault. I'll pay attention better next time cause the customer who got theirs wrapped before me.... I was intensely jealous. That thing looked like a healthy burrito and I was all about it. Recently tried this place through grub hub. Read the reviews and it seemed promising. Mom and aunt broth got the sweet potato salad with tofu and salmon and pita. I got the chicken bowl. Our food came and there was no salmon, tofu or protein in sight! Okay mistakes happen so I called the place, no one answered. We called at least 15 times and no one ever answered.
