Me and my daughter went to Great Face Cafe to get our makeup done for an event. They were recommended and she did a wonderful job. She was one time, which is important to me. I am writing a review on this site to shed light on how my soon to be mom was treated, when requesting service at a Black owned and operated beauty cafe. Back story per the customer: After not being able to get anyone on the phone The customer drove to the shop. The owner Azuka opened the door while on the phone she told her that I she had to call for an appointment. The customer told her that she tried but only got voicemail ( The voicemail tells you not to leave appointments on voicemail ) so she decided to come in person and make an appointment. Azuka gave her an appointment and about 5 minutes later Azuka called and said she had to cancel her appointment that she gave her because (and I quote) "my energy with her was not going to work". So let me start by saying that my soon to be mom is one of the kindest people I know and I have never seen her get angry or not show grace to anyone. With that being said she is amid about supporting BLACK BUSINESSES. Facts: 9.5% businesses in the United States are black owned. Eight out of 10 of them fail within the first 18 months. I went and reviewed this particular business website to find that this place has been in business for almost 20 years! Also , to say the least their mission statement mentions "well-recognized in the community for professional, high quality beauty services and cosmetic products". Keyword : Professionalism I highlight professionalism above because black businesses lack it as this particular one did. We need more black businesses and entrepreneurs so that we as black people can become and stay wealth builders for generations! As a business owner please think about your own biases and how they would reflect to your customers that are supporting you. Consider how you can do better because without our support your business cannot be successful without it. ALWAYS STRIVE TO EXCEED YOUR CUSTOMERS EXPERIENCE OR CLIENTS EXPECTATIONS AT ALL TIMES, WHENEVER AND WHEREVER POSSIBLE!!! When a business provides consistent excellent service or products, a consumer will become a loyal repeat customer, regardless of the distance, and they will also help grow your business by referring others. I have a wedding coming up and I was looking at hiring a black owned business to service me and my entire bridal party but after listening to this testimony I shall try somewhere else (black owned) and I hope I won't receive the lack of professionalism that was mentioned above because .....that wouldn't work well with my energy. read more

I used to frequent this place a while back & really liked my brows and experiences. However, one day I came to get brows done and arrived about 15-20 minutes early as I was having my car serviced near by. I left my car to be serviced and walked over to have a great experience with Azuka (the owner). She knew me & we had a pretty decent client-provider rapport. However, when I arrived, the receptionist asked me of the time of my appointment and did NOT make it clear that she would rather that I didn't wait inside early. Instead of communicating that to me, it was later revealed that she called the owner to complain about my presence in the salon. Moments later the owner stormed in, didn't say good morning, took the receptionist in the back area for a quick chat. Seconds later she returned and rudely said that "they have things to discuss & do before clients arrive.... Etc" and that she needed me to leave until my exact appointment time. Long story short, Azuka put me outside of the Great Face Cafe in the dead of Chicago winter without any regard. (Again, my car was being serviced so I couldn't wait inside my car) It was a deeply humiliating experience and I never went back after that. Horrible communication. Horrible costumer service. I came here to get my "sexy on" for my b-day and I came out too sexy for myself and I loooooove how my eyebrows look! The owner was very nice and pleasant. She explained to me how the make-up she applied was her very own brand(impressive). I will be back:) read more

Azuka is very good as an MUA and brow specialist! I don't wear makeup often, but when I do, Azuka is the one who does it. Even my bf liked the makeup she did for my 25th bday and he isn't a fan of full face makeup. The salon services are great and she is even greater at what she does. read more

I normally don't write reviews but I feel Azuka has definitely earned one. My daughters have used her for special occasions and she never disappoints. Their make-up is always flawless and age-appropriate. She takes her time to make sure it's perfect. I wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

I've been going to Great Face since forever. She's a pro at what she does. My girls went there for their prom makeup and they were beautiful. I've never had a bad experience. I don't usually write reviews, so I really don't enjoy writing this one. However, I felt it was important after what happened when my daughter stopped by Great Face Cafe today, simply to buy some makeup. I was a regular loyal customer a few years ago and would not let anyone else touch my brows. Plus, I enjoyed being able to patronize a local business in my neighborhood. I called one Saturday morning and made an appointment and was advised to come at 4:00 p.m. When I arrived, I was told my appointment was at 2:00 p.m., and because of this, she could not do my brows and that she was closed, although she was doing someone's makeup at the time. Now, I had never before missed an appointment without calling to cancel and I was always on time, so why would I be so bold and show up 2 hours late. I never would disrespect anyone's time like that. My mother was in the car when I made the appointment, and she too heard when the appointment was scheduled for 4:00 p.m. as I have Bluetooth in the car. The owner acted as if I was lying about the appointment time, which was made by her for 4:00 p.m. However, she had an I don't care attitude towards me and did not even offer an apology or even consider that she screwed up the appointment. Basically, it was like see you later, don't let the doorknob hit you. I could not believe she was treating me like this, a loyal customer for years. I walked out pissed as hell and vowed never to patronize her ass again. Fast forward to today, my daughter went there to buy some makeup during business hours. The door was locked, as it usually was, so she knocked on the door. My daughter said the owner was working on a customer, and looked up at the door and at my daughter standing there and did not acknowledge her. She turned away from the door and continued working. What kind of shit is that, REALLY!!! Although I was treated badly, I still recommended my daughter go there to buy some makeup and then she received the same disrespectful treatment. The arrogance of the owner is unreal. The worst customer service experience ever!! My daughter called me immediately in disbelief. How can someone in the customer service business treat people like this. Beware of visiting this place. If you value excellent customer service where you spend your money, go to a business that has the same values and not visit this place.
